  • 300 get free surgery in Niger

No fewer than 300 people have had free surgery in a medical outreach organised by the Sani Bello Foundation in Kontagora Local Government Area of Niger State.

The beneficiaries who included men, women, youths and children were operated on for appendicitis, fibroid, lumps, hernia, thyroid, goitre while others were treated for hypertension.

The three-day outreach which was in collaboration with the Graceland Health Development Foundation was held at the General Hospital Kontagora.

Speaking to The Nation, the vice chairman of the foundation, Usman Sani Bello said the medical outreach is done to change the lives of people and bring them relief from the ailments they are suffering from.

He said that there is no cost to human life stressing that the foundation would continue to work towards relieving the burden of the people that may not be able to do it by themselves.

“Our motive is to help those in need, to bring smile to the faces of the poor and the needy. There is no cost to human life; that is why we work at changing the lives of people and bringing a smile to their faces. It is really a priceless gift. “

Bello said that the medical outreach is the second one being organised by the foundation, adding that 358 people benefited from the medical outreach in 2017.

The Director General of the Sani Bello Foundation, Mr. Zakari Ikani said that although their target is 300, they had more than 500 people who came out for the medical outreach which posed a challenge for the Foundation as they could not attend to all.

“We attend to the major and emergency cases first. Those who cannot be handle, whose cases are minor will have to come back in the next medical outreach. We made provisions for 300 people but we had more than 500 people on ground and it was impossible for us to handle all of them. “

The Vice Chairman of Graceland Foundation Dr. William Ayat said that there is a team of 17 surgeons to attend on the cases present adding that the doctors are specialized in the job.

He added that some of the diseases are minor, “but some people go about with these disease for years because there is no fund to go for any operation.”

  • Boy, 3, needs N9 million for heart surgery

Boy, 3, needs N9 million for heart surgery

The arrival of a new baby in any family is heralded with pomp and ceremony. It was  so on May 22, 2014 when the family of Mr and Mrs Amos Adeniyi from Ondo State were blessed with their third child, Richard.

Parents, understandably, are eager to see their children grow up well and healthy with the prospect of becoming responsible members of the society. Most parents feel disappointed and may break down, if their child that had been a source of joy, turns, as it were, to be a source of sadness and despair due to some complicated illness.

That is the mood pervading the family as their son Richard, born three years ago, has not shown any sign of “growing up well and healthy”.

According to the boy’s father, Richard was hale and hearty, full of life before last December 18. During breakfast, he could not finish his meal, he became very weak and his health condition changed as he had seizure.

Not comfortable with the situation of their son, the Adeniyis took Richard to a private hospital in Ifako from where he was referred to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi-Araba.

He has been a patient of the Pediatric Cardiology Unit of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi Araba, Lagos.

According to clinical evaluation, Richard has symptomatic congenital heart disease, known as Tetralogy of Fallot by Echocardio-graphy

Richard requires urgent cardiovascular evaluation and open heart surgery to correct his heart defects to forestall irreversible and life-threatening complications. His medical condition has weighed down the family physically, emotionally and financially.

Narrating his plight, hesaid he had spent so much and he is still buying expensive drugs, which Richard takes every eight hours to sustain him before the operation in Germany by mid-March.

A Medical Report from LUTH issued and signed by Dr. J. O. Sokunbi, a Consultant Paediatrician/Paediatric Cardiologist on January 9, 2018 reads:

    To whom it may concern

‘’Summary of the medical report for Adeniyi Richard

‘’DOD: May 22, 2014.  Sex: Male Age: three years, seven  months. Hospital number: 697757.

‘’The above-named three-year-seven-months-old male child is a known patient of the Paediatric Cardiology Unit of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi Araba.

‘’Clinical evaluation indicated that Richard has symptomatic congenital heart disease, which was confirmed by echocardiography to be Tetralogy of Failot.

‘’Richard will require further cardiovascular evaluation and possible open heart surgery to correct his heart defects in order to forestall irreversible and life-threatening complications.

‘’This letter, therefore, serves as an introduction of the patient for any assistance that will facilitate surgical intervention at a centre with facilities for cardiac surgery.

‘’You may wish to contact the consultant in charge, if further clarification or information is required on Richard.

‘’The crux of the matter here is that the life of a fellow being is in danger.

The sum of N9 million is required to carry out the heart surgery in Germany (all expenses included) which the cardiologist said must be effected as quickly as possible to save the life of little Richard. This sum of money is too hard for his parents to afford.

Therefore, Mr and Mrs Amos Adeniyi are crying to kind-hearted Nigerians, people who believe in the future of their children, Nigerians who appreciate that children are precious gifts from God Almighty, Nigerians who can imagine the pangs of labour that a mother goes through and the pains a mother or a father could go through in the event of losing a child to death and Nigerians who can willingly choose to be Simon of Cyrene who helped Jesus Christ to carry His Cross on the way to Golgotha.

‘’The world Cross is symbolic here. Whenever and at whatever point in time you help in reducing the burden or pains of fellow humankind, it will be on record that you clothed, fed and gave water to Jesus to drink. History and destiny would certainly smile positively on you. Little Richard, for now, may be nobody. But a little help and sacrifice to help a dying little soul will certainly make him to be somebody tomorrow.

Mrs Adeniyi, mother of little Richard, said: “In tears I beg fellow Nigerians to help in seeing that my child lives. When I remember the pangs and pains of labour, I wish I could have provided the money a day after the discovery of this defect in my child’s heart. But since my husband and I could not afford the huge amount of money required in exchange of my son’s life, I run and cry to you my fellow Nigerians to help in ensuring that this little Nigerian lives to be useful to himself and the country. I am confused.”

It is not out of place for this mother of three to feel disappointed and be confused at one point in time or the other when she feels that the days of her precious child are numbered if nothing is done and fast too.

The boy’s father said: “We are appealing for help from Governor Akinwunmi Ambode and others to come to our aid urgently.”

  • ‘I need N4m for hip surgery in India’

A 32-year-old man, Okpiden Obas, has called on federal and Delta State governments, including rich individuals, to help him raise N4 million for a hip surgery in India.

Obas was involved in the March boat accident on Escravos waterways in Warri South West Local Government Area, in which nine persons died.

He sells clothes and shoes, but now could hardly move or bend.

Obas wife and family have abandoned him, and he has been ejected from his apartment.

He said: “It was discovered at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) that I have bilateral femoral heads avascular necrosis and bilateral hip joint osteoarthritis changes in my body.

  • Banky W survives another surgery

    Banky W survives another surgery

Banky Wellington, known as Banky W, has revealed the reason behind his absence from the social space.

The singer who just underwent  a surgery, says he is sharing his story to let people know what God has done for him.

He stated on Instagram, “A wise man once said this: “Scars, a sign that you had been hurt; a sign that you had been healed.”

On the journey to his survival, “I’m sharing these because they’re proof of what God has brought me through. And because somewhere out there, I know there’s someone who needs to hear this. For those who’ve been wondering why I’ve been away so long. I had my third surgery on a rare strain of skin cancer tumours in my shoulder last month. The first two times were over 10 years ago, and then it recently resurfaced. But this isn’t a sad story as much as it is a reminder, and a testimony.

“A reminder that you should never take life for granted. You only get one shot. Some people went to sleep and never woke up. Many others have lost the battle to cancer and other illnesses. Many are still fighting. You never know when your time will be up so don’t waste another minute. It’s also a testimony about the goodness of God. I think I had to go through this again to remember how merciful God is to me; Lord knows I don’t deserve it but He saves me time and again anyway. I keep saying I need to write a book. I really, really do.

“The past few weeks of recovery have been tough, but beautiful. I’m finally back on my feet, feeling stronger and ready to get back to life. I’m especially thankful to my Nurse Susu for loving me and being by my side every step of the way. I don’t deserve”.

“I’m thankful for life, provision and healing. Please don’t feel bad, or message me with any worries. God has done it, just thank Him for me,” he urged his fans.

Boko Haram: Child victim survives surgery, begins to walk

A six-year old Boko Haram victim, Ali Ahmadu, has survived a corrective surgery in his spinal cord. He can now walk, after 14 days in the hospital.

While being ferried to Dubai on September 10, all he could mutter repeatedly in Hausa was: “Ina so insake tafiya da kafana…Don Allah ataimakamu…Don Allah. Ina so in je makaranta”. (“I want to begin to walk with my legs again. For God’s sake, assist me. I want to go to school”).

Now Ali can walk as he “miraculously” stood up from his hospital bed to the amazement of his shocked doctors. They had projected that it would take him four weeks to walk.

The surgery at Zulekha Hospital Sharjah in Dubai, United Arab Emirates was coordinated by Dr. Nishit Bhargava.

It was  bankrolled by the Dickens Sanomi Foundation with $48,000 (N17.5million).

The Foundation  was established by Mr. Igho Sanomi who owns the Taleveras Group.

Sanomi said: “Miracles do happen. For those of you who don’t believe in God, better believe in God now.

“This is Ali Ahmadu who was run over by Boko Haram terrorists in 2014. The boy and his pregnant mother were left under a tree for three days. The boy was bleeding from mouth and nose throughout the agonising days.

“Ali’s spinal cord was damaged and he couldn’t walk. For three years, help was needed. God made it possible after five to six hours of surgery and 48 hours in intensive care. Little Ali could walk again. This happened today to everyone’s surprise.

“This determined six-year old boy got off his bed and decided to walk despite doctors’ expectations that he would need physiotherapy to learn to walk again at least three weeks after surgery. Today, Ali walked after just seven days.

“This made my day and I am so proud of the Dickens Sanomi Foundation for making this surgery possible financially.”

The  Founder of  Global Initiative for Peace, Love and Care (GIPLC), Mr. Nuhu Fulani Kwajafa, who collaborated with the Sanomi Foundation, how Ali was picked up before finally landing  in Dubai.

He  said: “After five hours on the 17th of September and almost 48 hours in Intensive Care Unit, Ali Ahmadu had a very successful procedure.

“It has been a divine journey starting far away in Chibok in 2014. It is the story of a little boy left to die, underneath a tree, to where (Dubai) we are today.

“It is about a fighting spirit, a resolute charming soul and spirit beating all odds to survive and walk again.

“It seemed unachievable but thanks to all our efforts. We have cause to rejoice. This is to say a big thank you from Ali’s family and GIPLC. Most especially our best regards goes to the President of the Senate, Dr. Bukola Saraki and his colleagues who set the ball rolling towards raising funds and awareness for the surgery.

“Our profound gratitude goes specially to Dickens Sanomi Foundation for making it all happen and for being at the hospital with Ali..

“This surgery was made possible by the esteemed Foundation. Thank you once again the Chairman of the Foundation, Igho Sanomi and its Board of Trustees.

“We thank the press (print and electronic). We cannot do it without you.We are grateful. We thank Nigerians for their prayers and well-wishes. God will bless you all immensely. God has done it again.”

    8-yr-old needs N400, 000 for surgery

The father of an eight-year-old boy,  Kehinde Abdul-Raheem Yusuf, who is laid up with hydrocephalus ailment has cried out for help following his inability to raise a sum of N400,000 for a major surgery on his son.

Isiaka Yusuf, 52, a recharge card seller, whose wife and mother of the boy is an auxiliary nurse said his son has been receiving treatment at the University College Hospital (UCH) Ibadan since June 2011.

He said: ‘’He and his twin brother, Taiwo, were born normal but six months after being born on 19th of September 2009 at Iseyin General Hospital, Iseyin, Oyo State Nigeria, Kehinde had repeated high temperature prompting me and my wife to take him to Ado-Awaye General Hospital, Iseyin Local Government Area of Oyo State where the Chief Medical Director of the Hospital who also doubled  as the owner of Holy Land Hospital, Peller Road, Iseyin, in Iseyin Local Government Area passed a drip via his head. Two weeks later my child’s head started growing more than his entire body and he could not sit, walk or control his head since then.

‘’He had undergone two surgeries (one at the University College Hospital and the other at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital) and currently undergoing physiotherapy at the University College Hospital (UCH).

‘’Meanwhile, his doctor says he has to undergo a minor surgery on his legs and some other treatment estimated to cost #400,000 or more even as we are yet to see any change in my child after spending fortunes on him since March 2010 as a result of which I have sold virtually all my properties to see him through.

‘’Before going to the University College Hospital (UCH) in 2011, I have taken him to about ten different private and trado-medical hospitals. I am now tired and seek the assistance of members of the public to help raise this fund to treat him or assist in taking him to any hospital in western countries for better and less-stressful treatment. I  don’t know who to run to for financial assistance, hence, I am begging Nigerians to come to my rescue in the name of God.’’
