Military: 8,000 Boko Haram members surrender

The military yesterday in Abuja said 8,000 Boko Haram members voluntarily surrendered to its “Operation Safe Corridor” in the Northeast.

Director of Defence Information Brig.-Gen. Rabe Abubakar spoke at a lecture organised by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Correspondents’ Chapel.

Abubakar said the surrendered insurgents were in a camp in Gombe waiting to be “de-radicalised” by the military.

He also said over 10,000 Boko Haram captives were  rescued by the military.

The Defence spokesman  said some of them were reunited with their families, while others were taken to Internally Displaced Person’s (IDP) camps.

Abubakar said Boko Haram had been decimated by the military, and that the Federal  Government would rehabilitate victims and rebuilt affected areas.

He also hinted that the military would launch “Operation Safe Corridor” to address the menace of herdsmen across the country.

The Defence spokesman promised that the military operation would put an end to the killings by herdsmen.

Responding to questions on the action by the military declaring some journalists wanted, he urged the media not to allow sentiments to influence their judgment on the issue.

He said the military should be allowed to do its work, while assuring them that no journalist would be victimised.

Abubakar said good military-media relationship was crucial to winning the war against insurgency.

He said the media drove public support for the militar, which had boosted the morale of officers and the rank-and-file.

Boko Haram fighters surrender in Borno

Military authority in Borno have disclosed that over 200 Boko Haram terrorists gave up figting and surrendered to troops of the 7 Division, Nigerian Army in Borno State yesterday on Sallah day.

According to the Theatre Commander of the Operation Lafiya Dole (Peace is Must) in the north east, Major General Mohammed Abubakar , the decision of the terrorists is not unconnected to the ongoing offensive raid going on  in the boader communities of  Banki, Bama local government in Borno State  and Cameroon Republic.

Many communities on that axis have been under the control of the Boko Haram insurgents until they were recently recaptured by the Nigerian military.

The Theatre Commander who was speaking at an interactive session with journalists  on Friday  at the military Command and Control Centre in Maimalari Barracks, Maiduguri revealed that those who surrendered were mainly women and children.

His words; “I am happy to inform you that over 200 terrorists group surrendered to may troops around Banki town on Thursday. The field commander just called me and briefed me about the development.

“We are calling on other terrorists to surrender as anyone who surrender will be reintegrated into the society.

“Presently, we have 36 Internally Displaced Persons Camps in the north east and all those who surrendered to troops were screened before taken to these camps pending when the closed down roads will be reopen for motorists so that the displaced  people will go back to their liberated communities.

“We have started sending our engineers to repair all the destroyed bridges. Already our engineers have started reconstructing the destroyed bridges along Gamboru-Ngala- Maiduguri, Gombi- Garkida- Biu roads among others and very soon the menace of Boko haram madness will be over, but this can never be achieved without the full cooperation of the media and the general public.

“The fight against insurgency/ terrorists is a collective responsibility and all hands must be on deck to nip terrorism in the bud”, he  said.

Five Boko Haram insurgents surrender, says DHQ

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) said yesterday that five Boko Haram insurgents have surrendered after encounters in Konduga, the Borno State town that has been a theatre of war.

It said the affected insurgents pleaded for mercy after surrendering their weapons.

The DHQ, which made the disclosure in a tweet yesterday, said some captured insurgents were already giving useful information.

The tweet said: “As the heat on terrorists continues, five terrorists yesterday surrendered with all their weapons to troops in Konduga, pleading for mercy

“Other captured terrorists have also been giving useful information on the subsequent plans of the group in an apparent offer to cooperate.”

Another security source said: “For the fourth time, the insurgents had attempted to gain entrance into Konduga on Saturday but they were repelled by troops.

“Following relentless onslaught by troops, many members of the Boko Haram terrorists group are beginning to surrender voluntarily.

“Some of them submitted themselves and their weapons to the leadership of the troops in Konduga during a further campaign at the weekend.

“In the last few days there have been several attempts by terrorists desperate to gain entry to Konduga which the Nigerian troops have continued to foil.

“The terrorists’ move was aimed at recovering the bodies of their prominent fighters who had died in the previous encounters in the area.

“Also, the Nigerian troops have recovered more weapons during the mop up operations while some of their (terrorists’) vehicles have been destroyed.

In the last two weeks, troops killed over 150 Boko Haram insurgents in Konduga to halt their bold bid to march on Maiduguri.

The latest development confirmed the alarm raised by the Borno Elders Forum (BEF) Maiduguri is under threat.

The BEF last Wednesday cried out that Boko Haram insurgents had surrounded Maiduguri.

A statement by the Chairman of the Forum, Amb. Gaji Galtimari Usman, said about 50 per cent of the population of Borno State had relocated to Maiduguri.

  • Army to Boko Haram members: surrender

Army to Boko Haram members: surrender

Members of the Boko Haram sect who surrender will get free passage, the army said yesterday.

Acting Brigade Commander of the 21 Armoured Brigade in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, Col. Ibrahim Yusuf, also said that the army would do everything to protect residents from attacks. He spoke in Maiduguri.

He said: “I want to assure you that we will give a safe passage to members of the sect, including foot soldiers, ready to surrender.

“Those involved can either surrender themselves at any military outpost or go to their ward or district head.

“Let me say again that all those who surrender will not be killed, but will be given safe passage,” he said

He added that new measures to counter Boko Haram attacks on civilians had been introduced but he did not state the measures.

“I want to assure you that the army is doing everything possible to ensure that no civilian is attacked by Boko Haram in the state because we are here to ensure the safety of all Nigerians,” Col. Yusuf said.

He linked the recent attacks on travellers and villagers by suspected Boko Haram militants on highways to frustration.

The acting commander said “most times, the Boko Haram members go to remote villages to kill innocent civilians in cold blood because they have been frustrated by the army”.

“They cannot operate in the open, so they vent their anger on innocent civilians.’’

Col.Yusuf, who said the military was equal to the task, noted that “we cannot be taken by surprise by the Boko Haram; the recent attacks are nothing but signs of weakness.

“We are also evolving strategies to make sure that we prevent future attacks, no matter how small.’’

The Army, also in Damaturu, denied that two of their VVL Armoured cars were taken away by Boko Haram invaders during the night attack on Damaturu.

It also denied reports that an ex-officer who was purported to have led the attack in Damaturu on Thursday night was arrested.

The spokesman of the 3 Division Special Operation Battalion, Damaturu Cpt. Eli Lazarus, in an sms, said: “The story that the Army arrested an ex-Colonel who led Yobe Boko Haram attacks is absolute falsehood. Also, the purported arrest of a truck containing uniforms and arms is also not true. “

Capt. Eli said: “We did not lose any of our armoured vehicles to Boko Haram. All our machines are intact.”

Damaturu, the state capital, is bouncing back in the aftermath of the black Thursday.

Church services were successful in the metropolis, but with low turnout.

Normalcy has also returned to the metropolis as many shops were open, with residents making brisk purchase to beat the 4pm curfew dateline.

The Borno government is to re-build about 200 houses destroyed last week in Kawuri village of Konduga Local Government Area by suspected insurgents.

Deputy Governor Zannah Mustapha gave this indication yesterday when he visited the village. He said the government would compensate traders who lost their shops during the attack.

Mustapha directed the Konduga Local Government Caretaker Committee to prepare a list of all those affected.

He said that since attacks by insurgents had become a daily affair in remote areas, the affected communities must form vigilante groups to defend themselves.

“I am here to condole with the community over last week’s attack by suspected Boko Haram militants.

“I want to appeal to all those who suffered losses to take it as an act of God, because it is only Him who gives or takes away.

“ Communities who are vulnerable to this kind of attack must begin to introduce a kind of community policing to prevent future attacks.

“What I am saying is that individuals must come out to form vigilante groups to defend themselves against attacks.

“The best form of security is community policing. People must be ready to fight and defend themselves against Boko Haram, through the formation of vigilante groups,” he said.

While promising that the government would collaborate with security agencies to strengthen security in the area, Mustapha urged the community to copy the experience of Maiduguri, the state capital, which used to be the stronhold of the insurgents.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that about 18 persons were injured after suspected insurgents attacked the community last week, destroying about 200 houses, 50 shops and many vehicles.

20 militants surrender arms in Akwa Ibom

Twenty militants in Ibeno Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State have surrendered arms to the Federal Government’s Inter-Agency Task Force on Militancy.

The leader of the Task Force, Air- Vice Marshall Jim Gbum, spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Eket yesterday.

AVM Gbum said the committee received the militants at the Ibeno Jetty.

He listed the arms surrendered as six browning machine guns, rocket launchers and AK-47 rifles.

The chairman said the militants responded to the Federal Government’s second phase of the amnesty programme.

He alleged that the group had been responsible for crimes in the high sea between Akwa Ibom and Cross River states.

The state Chairman of Artisan Fishermen Association of Nigeria, Samuel Ayadi, has praised the Federal Government for extending the programme to those who did not embrace its first phase.

He said the group’s action would bring peace to the state’s waterways.

The disarmament record and documentation of the ex-militants would be done today at the stadium in Eket.
