  • Two women docked over alleged N334, 000 fraud

    Two women were yesterday brought before a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos over allegations of N334, 000 fraud.

    The defendants, Tatiana Dike, 41, and Adenike Freeman, 74, who live in Surulere are being tried on a three-count charge of conspiracy, fraudulently obtaining money under false pretences and stealing.

    The duo, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    The Prosecutor, Sgt. Anthonia Osayande, told the court that the defendants committed the offences on Jan. 21 at No. 8 Adenowo Str., Ikate Surulere.

    “The defendants obtained N337, 000 from one Esther Okwara under the pretext of renting a mini flat apartment at No. 8 Adenowo Street, Ikate Surulere,” Osayande said.

    She submitted that the defendants, who were alleged to have deliberately swindled Okwara, failed to procure the apartment as promised.

    The prosecutor said that offences contravened Sections 287, 314 and 325 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Oluyemisi Adelaja, granted the defendants bail in the sum of N100, 000 with one surety each in like sum.

    Adelaja said that the sureties should be gainfully employed and show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State government.

    She adjourned the case until March 18 for mention.

    Woman docked for injuring girl

    A 40-year-old woman, Motunrayo Adadi, who allegedly inflicted injury on the head of a 13-year-old girl, Deborah Matthew, on Tuesday appeared before a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.‎

    Adadi, a resident of 15b, Lati Erelu Street, Ijeshatedo, Lagos, is facing a three-count charge of unlawful treatment, human trafficking and assault.‎

    The Prosecutor, Sgt. Anthonia Osayande, told the court that the accused committed the offences at No. 15b, Lati Erelu Street, Ijeshatedo, Lagos, at about 6.30 a.m. on November 11.‎

    Osayande said the accused assaulted the 13-year-old girl and inflicted injury on her head.‎

    She said that Adadi did engage in human trafficking by using Deborah as house help and treating her indecently. ‎‎

    The prosecutor said the offences contravened Sections 245, 135 and 276 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Ipaye Nwachukwu, granted the accused bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.

    She said one of the sureties must be a blood relation of the accused and must show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    The chief magistrate said the addresses of the sureties must be verified, and adjourned the case until December 15 for mention.

  • Man faces child defilement, gets N500, 000 bail

    A 25-year-old man, Igwe Ikechukwu , who allegedly defiled an eight-year-old girl, was on Wednesday released on bail on the orders of a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

    The ‎ Chief Magistrate, Mrs Ipaye Nwachukwu, granted him bail in the sum of N500, 000 and also asked him to deposit N100, 000 into the account of the court’s registrar.‎

    Nwachukwu said one of the sureties must be a civil servant on at least Grade Level 14, while the other surety must be a landlord in Lagos state.

    In addition, the sureties should provide evidence of tax payment to the government.

    The magistrate directed that the case file should be duplicated and a copy sent to the State Director of Public Prosecutions for advice.

    Ikechukwu , a resident of No. 28, Baloo St., Otto in Ebute Meta, Lagos, had pleaded not guilty to the charges of attempt to penetrate and indecent treatment of the minor.

    ‎‎The prosecutor, Sgt. Anthonia Osayande told the court that the accused committed the offences on March 23 at his apartment at about 2. 00p.m.

    ‎‎Osayande said the accused indecently treated the eight-year-old girl and also attempted to penetrate her leaving her with bruises.

    ‎The offences contravened Sections 135 and 260 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.

    The case was adjourned until May 30.

     

  • Accountant bolts with employer’s N747,400

    A 35-year-old accountant, Grace Wisdom, who allegedly stole her employer’s N747,420, was on Thursday brought before a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

    Wisdom, whose address is unknown, is facing a charge of stealing.

    She pleaded innocence of the offence, but the Prosecutor, Sgt. Christopher Okoliko, insisted that the accused committed the offence between May 23, 2016 and March 21, 2017 at No. 41, Onitana St., Surulere.

    Okoliko said the accused stole Grandex Pharmaceutical Company Ltd’s  N747,420 being proceeds of sales.

    The offence contravened Section 287 (7) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the section provides that any clerk or servant who steals the property of his employer, is liable on conviction to seven years imprisonment.

    Ruling on the woman’s bail application, the Chief Magistrate, Mr A.A. Paul, granted her bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.

    Paul said one of the sureties must be a blood relation of the accused, while the other surety must be a community leader or cleric.‎

    In addition, he said the sureties should provide evidence of tax payments to the government.

    The case was adjourned until April 5 for mention.

  • Eight sex workers docked in Lagos, get N400, 000 bail

    ‎Eight women believed to be sex workers, who allegedly solicited sex at a public place, were on Thursday brought before a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

    They were, however, released on N400, 000 bail.

    The eight women – Jessita Nelson, 25; Chinyere Elon, 25; Cynthia Nwoke, 38; Taiwo Ali, 45; Abigal Moses, 29; Ifeanyi Okoro, 30; Chiwendu Anah, 40; and  Ivie Osasa, 25‎ – are facing a charge of soliciting for immoral purpose.

    They all denied the charge.

    The Prosecutor, Sgt. Christopher Okoliko told the court that Nelson and Elon commi‎tted the offence on March 27 at about 12.30 a.m. on Babs Animashaun Road, Surulere, while the six others committed the offence on March 27 at about 12.00 .a.m. along Adeniran Ogunsanya Street, Surulere.

    ‎According to him, the eight women have been sighted at the various spots for alleged solicitation of prostitution.

    The offence contravened Section 142 (b) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015 (Revised).

    The Chief Magistrate,  Mr A.A. Paul, granted the women N50,000 each with one surety in like sum.

    He said surety must be gainfully employed and also provide evidence of tax payments to the government.

    The case was adjourned until April 11 for mention.

    Man in court for assaulting wife, granted bail

    A Surulere Chief Magistrate’s’ Court in Lagos on Monday granted N200,000 bail to 38-year-old unemployed man, Arinze Ebosie, who allegedly assaulted his wife, Victoria Nwokoro.

    The Magistrate, Mr Aro Lambo, who gave the ruling, asked Ebosie to provide two sureties in like sum as part of the bail condition.

    He said one of the sureties must be an employee in the public or private sector, while the other must be a cleric or a community leader.

    Lambo said the sureties should show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government and adjourned mention until April 24.

    The defendant, of no fixed address, is facing one-count charge of assault.

    Earlier, the Prosecutor, Sgt. Anthonia Osayande, had told the court that the defendant committed the offence on March 17 at No.11, Ladega Street, Surulere, Lagos.

    Osayande said that Ebosie, who was separated from his wife for a while now, found out where she was currently living and he went to the house and beat her up.

    She said “Victoria was rushed to the hospital by a neighbour, who consequently reported the matter to police.”

    She added that the offence contravened Section 170 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

  • Police arraign two men charged with assault

    The police on Thursday arraigned two men, Rasaq Faruq and Emanuel Ogbonaya in a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos State, for obstructing and assaulting a policeman while on duty.

    Faruq, 20, and Ogbonaya, 20, are facing a five-count charge of conspiracy, breach of peace, being armed and assault.

    The prosecutor, Sgt. Christopher Okoliko, told the court that the defendants,
    with others now at large, committed the offences on March 17 at about 8 p.m. at Moshalashi Street, Sari-Iganmu, Lagos. ‎

    He said they conducted themselves in a manner that could cause breach of peace by disturbing the community, armed with stones and knives.‎

    Okoliko said the defendants were in possession of weed suspected to be Indian hemp and unlawfully assaulted Sgt. Michael Bagou and his team while on duty.‎

    He said that the offences contravened sections 409, 161(d) (1), 51, 328(b) and 172 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.‎

    The two men, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges and the Chief Magistrate, Mrs M.I. Dan-Oni, granted them bail in the sum of N50,000 each and one surety each in like sum.

    Dan-Oni ordered that the sureties must be blood relations of the defendants and must provide evidence of tax payment, with their addresses verified.‎

    She adjourned the case until April 4 for mention

     

  • Defilement: 38-year-old man gets N500,000 bail  

     

    A 38-year-old man, Ifeanyi Eduputa, who allegedly defiled a seven-year-old girl, was on Thursday  released on a N500,000-bail on the order of a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

    The ‎ chief magistrate, Mrs Ipaye Nwachukwu, also ordered the accused to provide with two sureties in like sum as part of his bail conditions.‎

    Nwachukwu said one of the sureties must be a civil servant who must not be less than Grade Level 14 while the other must be a landlord in Lagos state.

    She added that the sureties must provide evidence of tax payment to the state government and their addresses verified by the prosecutor.

    The magistrate also directed the prosecutor to duplicate the case file and sent a copy to the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPPs) for legal advice.

    The magistrate then adjourned the case until May 8.

    ‎‎The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Eduputa, a resident of No. 28, Ogunsanmi St., Itire area of Lagos State, is being tried for defilement and indecent treatment.

    Earlier, the prosecutor, Sgt. Anthonia Osayande, had told the court that the accused committed the offences on March 3, at his residence at about 3.00 p.m.

     

    ‎‎She said the accused, unlawfully and indecently, defiled a seven-year-old girl by sitting on her buttock and inserted a tissue paper into her virginal.

     

    She alleged that the girl’s parents who were residing in the same compound with the accused reported the case to the police after their daughter had narrated the incident to them.

    Osayande said that the offences contravened Sections 135 and 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

     

    ‎The accused, however, pleaded innocence of the offences.

  • Suspected child defiler gets N500, 000 bail

    A 32-year-old man, Chibuike Marizu, who allegedly defiled an 11-year-old girl, was on Monday released on a bail of N500, 000 on the orders of a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

    Marizu is facing a charge of defilement to which he pleaded not guilty before ‎Chief Magistrate Ipaye Nwachukwu.

    ‎She said one of the sureties must be a civil servant of not less than Grade Level 14, while the other surety must be a landed property owner in Lagos with an evidence of tax payment.

    Nwachukwu directed that the case file should be duplicated and a copy sent to the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice.

    The prosecutor, Sgt. Anthonia Osayande had told the court that ‎ the accused committed the offence at No. 3, Yinka Bello St., NEPA Bus Stop in Ejigbo area of Lagos at about 8.00 a.m. on Feb.23.

    ‎She said the accused, whose shop is located at No. 3, Yinka Bello Street, sent the 11-year-old girl on an errand and on her return, he closed the door of the shop and assaulted her sexually. ‎

    ‎Osayande said the girl reported the incident to her mother which led to the arrest of the accused.

    ‎The offence contravened Sections 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2011.‎

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the section prescribes life imprisonment for child defilement.‎

    ‎The case was adjourned until May 9.

     

  • Man in court over alleged defilement of minor

    A 28-year-old man, Chikaodiri Agwu, who allegedly defiled a minor, on Wednesday appeared before a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on a count charge.

    Agwu, a resident of Ajakaiye Street on Onipetesi Estate, Mangoro area of Lagos, was charged with having sexual intercourse with his 9-year-old female neighbour.

    The prosecutor, Sgt. Anthonia Osayande, told the court that ‎the accused committed the offence at his residence on Jan. 16.

    She said the accused took the girl to his apartment and had carnal knowledge of her in contravention of Section 139 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.‎

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty, and was granted bail by Chief Magistrate Ipaye Nwachukwu in the sum of N200, 000 with two sureties in like sum.‎

    Ipaye held that one of the sureties must be a blood relation of the accused, while the other must be a community leader or cleric with evidence of tax payment.

    She adjourned the case till March 30 mention.
