    Council chief honoured for landmark book on autonomy

    The Chief Whip of the Surulere Local Government Legislative Council, Eric Olanrewaju Otinwa, has been honoured with an award by the Prestige Media Group for his recently published book, Council Autonomy and Grassroots Governance.

    The recognition was presented in appreciation of his effort to promote understanding of local government administration in Nigeria.

    Presenting the award to Otinwa in his office, Chief Executive Officer of Prestige Media Group and convener of the annual Prestige Media Personality Award, Oluwakemi Oni, described the book as a “timely and impactful intervention that deepens discourse on governance at the grassroots level.”

    Otinwa, who also serves as the Chairman of the Lagos State Chief Whip Forum, is the first sitting legislator in the state to author and launch a book while in office.

    The 204-page publication, unveiled as part of his 50th birthday celebration, offers a detailed insight into the workings of Nigeria’s local government system and compares it with similar structures in countries such as South Africa, Ghana and the United Kingdom.

    Otinwa said the objectives of writing the book were threefold: “to raise public interest in local government affairs, to create a deeper understanding of the administrative demands and structural challenges of the third tier of government, and to inspire young people to participate actively in governance.”

    Highlighting his contributions within Surulere, Otinwa cited several community-based interventions, including the installation of solar-powered street lights, procurement of local buses to improve mobility, construction of recreational facilities, road rehabilitation projects and the distribution of over 1,000 vehicles to residents, aimed at boosting livelihoods and supporting economic activity at the grassroots.

    To improve the safety of the various mini stadia constructed by the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, the Chairman of Surulere Local Government, Sulaimon Bamidele Yusuf has embarked on the distribution of first aid boxes and fire extinguishers to the representatives of Obele Oniwala, Paddington, Small London, and Love Garden mini stadia. 

    The safety tools made available through the office of the Senior Special Assistant on Sports to the Local Government Chairman, Mr Segun David in collaboration with SEAMATE (Health and Safety Company), serves as a first of a many agenda’s of the administration to ensure that the mini stadia are upgraded and well maintained to cater for fire and injury emergencies.

    Yusuf noted that Gbajabiamila has done his best in bringing the stadia to good shape, and it is left in the hands of the users to maintain and manage them properly. 

    “RT Hon Femi Gbajabiamila has done his part, he has revamped and improved the stadia; it is left for we, the beneficiaries and users of these stadiums, to take care of them.

    “This is the major reason why the administration emphasizes sustainability and responsible management, ensuring that these investments serve future generations. It is not enough to build or renovate; maintaining these facilities through proper usage, community engagement, and regular upkeep is essential to preserving their value and functionality for sports development and national pride,” he said. 

     David affirmed that the distribution will be a continuous process and all other stadia will receive their own packages in due time. 

    He said: “The first phase of this distribution is going to Obele Oniwala, Paddington, Small London, and Love Garden mini stadia, however, another round of distribution will be communicated to the representatives of other mini stadia across Surulere. 

    “This is not a one of thing, we as an administration is committed to the development of all our sporting facilities, and we will continue to ensure that everything is put in place.”
