As part of the activities to mark Nigeria’s 65th Independence, Surulere Connect Global, gathered students from various schools to celebrate the nation’s history, culture, and talents through a fiesta.

The event, held at the NPA Hall, Eko Club in Surulere, Lagos, featured a range of activities including dance, quiz competitions, debates, drama, poetry, spoken words, and more.

At the inaugural event, Omotayo Gbajabiamila, a member of the House of Assembly and founder of Surulere Connect Global and Surulere Connect Academy, said the initiative aimed at bridging the gap between the older and younger generations.

“It’s about bringing the youth together with the older ones who are reputable role models because, we’ve discovered that our youth lately do not have a dimension. Perhaps, they do not have anyone to serve as a role model or because they have many other vices that are distracting them,” Gbajabiamila said.

She expressed optimism that the country can still reach its full potential by investing more in initiatives that improve education, while emphasizing the importance of unity and collective effort as key to achieving success, rather than pursuing division.

“Well, as a Nigerian, I believe in ‘united we stand, divided we fall.’ Even if we believe we’re from different tribes, different homes and when we get home at night, we’re all Nigerians at the end of the day.

“A lot of students have done plays (drama) in Hausa, Igbo, and Yoruba and we’re all saying we’re all one. It’s too late for us to start separating, and to be very honest, we’re really interwoven. Those who want us to separate are going to send us back. We should just manage what we have and make the best of it. So help us God as Nigerians,” she said.

Ashibuogwu Buchi, a student from New Era Girls Senior Secondary School, was thrilled by the positive impact of the Independence Fiesta.

She stated that, “the programme has impacted me with so many things. I’ve learnt that cooperation and being among my peers can actually help me to be where I’ve never been before.”

Another student from Ansar-ud-deen Grammar School, Surulere, Ayi Blessing, said the event held great significance for him, adding, “It means a lot to me because it’s a wonderful day and a day of celebration as well as showcasing my talent.”

In the debate, the Business Administration Department of Grace Polytechnic, secured first place, while the Computer Science Department of the same institution finished as the runner-up.

However, Zumratul Islammiyah Senior Secondary School emerged as the quiz winner with 38 points, while Ijeshatedo Senior Secondary School claimed the runner-up position with 33 points.

No evidence found in viral allegations of officer misconduct in Surulere, says LASTMA

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) says it has found no evidence to support claims of misconduct by its officers following a viral social media post alleging harassment near the Iponri area of Surulere.

The allegation, posted on X (formerly Twitter) by one Mr. Chiemelie Kyrian Offor, accused unidentified LASTMA officers of wrongfully arresting and harassing him on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, before taking him to an undisclosed office allegedly near “Faithview Hospital.”

In a statement issued Thursday, LASTMA said it immediately launched an internal investigation after the post gained attention.

The agency said it debriefed all officers deployed to the Iponri corridor on the date in question and reviewed duty rosters and operational logs.

However, the authority reported that no findings matched Mr. Offor’s account.

It added that attempts to contact him for additional information, such as vehicle registration, officer description, or any other supporting evidence, have so far been unsuccessful.

LASTMA reaffirmed its commitment to accountability and urged members of the public to provide verifiable details when reporting alleged misconduct.

The agency concluded that, in the absence of verifiable evidence or actionable information, there was no basis to substantiate the claims made in the viral post.

Despite its findings, LASTMA reiterated its commitment to transparency, professionalism, and citizen-focused service delivery.

“LASTMA will continue to uphold the highest standards of integrity in its operations and will not hesitate to investigate any credible reports brought to its attention,” the statement said.

Surulere Local Government Chairman, Sulaimon Yusuf, has empowered over 600 residents by distributing essential items and financial aid.

The items included deep freezers, grinding machines, generators and industrial sewing machines.

“We gave them what they requested so they wouldn’t feel the need to sell it. For instance, someone who asked for a deep freezer also received soft drinks and water to start their business immediately. We are giving them a head start, and it’s up to them to make good use of it,” he said.

Yusuf highlighted other achievements during his tenure, including the renovation of the local government secretariat into an ultra-modern office complex and various other developmental projects aimed at improving the community’s infrastructure and services.

A beneficiary, Mobolaji Deka, expressed her gratitude, saying, “The local government chairman here in Surulere is doing a great job. I received a deep freezer, soft drinks, and water. I pray that God enables them to do even more for the people.”

  • Surulere slashes prices of food items by 50%

Surulere slashes prices of food items by 50%

Thousands of residents of Surulere and its environs thronged Surulere Local Government, in Lagos, to buy foodstuff.

The council Chairman, Sulaiman Yusuf, had earlier announced the slashing of food items’ prices by 50 per cent for the residents.

The gesture, he said, was to reduce the effect of inflation on the people.

Tagged Surulere Market Fair, some of the food items sold were garri, foreign and local rice, beans, grandnut oil, palm oil, eggs, noodles, pepper of all kinds, and yam.

Yusuf said many people at the grassroots were affected after the removal of fuel subsidy and slashing food prices is a way of supporting the people.

He also said the other half of the cost of the commodities will be paid by the local government.

“We’re giving out 50 per cent reduction. Whatever cost of the commodity, 50 per cent of it will be paid by the local government. When we look at it, foreign rice is sold for N18,000 for 10kg, we’re selling it for N9,000, local government will pay the rest. The same goes for other commodities,” he said.

He added that being the first edition of this programme, the turnout was massive and that he didn’t expect he would see such amount of people.

“This is the first edition of the programme. We’ve learnt a lot from this, by the next edition, we would plan better. We would’ve arranged everything at night so when people start coming in, they would buy and leave.

“I did not even expect this turn out, it is massive; we can all see that truly there is hunger in the land, but we believe that we will do our best to ameliorate it,” Yusuf said.

He urged Nigerians to remain calm; assuring that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu would right the wrong of the past.

Some of the beneficiaries commended the council boss for this gesture.

One of the beneficiaries, Ade Kunle, said the programme was well organised.

“The products were splashed by 50 per cent and it was very affordable. It was well coordinated. Individuals were allowed to initially buy more than two items, but when the crowd expanded in number, they were allowed to buy just two items so as to ensure that items be enough for everyone to purchase,” he said.

Another beneficiary, Alhaja Modupe Ola, said that it was a well thought out initiative. She appealed to the council boss to make such gesture a weekly activity.

According to her, a lot of people are feeling the impact of subsidy removal, hence, the need for local governments across the federation to regularly come up with intervention programs such as this.

She said the council should also increase the number of food items.

  • Surulere gas fire: Victims count losses

Following the recent gas fire explosion in Aguda, Surulere, Lagos, victims have been counting their losses. Many have also been calling on the government for assistance to get back on their feet. More importantly, it has again brought to the fore the need to readdress the surge in indiscriminate location of gas facilities across the country. Omolara Akintoye writes

Where do I start from, with all my machines gone and nothing to work with? The fact that I bought most of these machines on credit makes this whole fire incident really hard to bear. I’ve been managing to pay back the loan; but now that all the machines are burnt, what do I tell the owners? They are already asking for their money”

Those were the tearful words of Okoro Nnamdi, whose properties and work tools got consumed in a recent gas fire outbreak in a building on Babs Animashaun Street, Aguda, Surulere.

The Surulere gas fire will go down as the most recent in what has become a regular occurrence across the country. Many would remember the inferno that claimed lives and property in Nasarawa late last year, when leaking gas from a gas plant at the centre of town got ignited by a spark from a vehicle exhaust pipe. That incident led to the death of over a score of people, including students, left many injured and about a dozen vehicles burnt. Many will also remember the January 2018 explosion at a gas facility in the Magodo area of Lagos that got Lagosians palpitating in fear for hours. That also claimed 10 human lives.

It is perhaps for this reason that many are thankful for the most recent incident, as it claimed no life. But its effect was by no means negligible.

Chukwura Ngozi, a caterer in one of the shops affected, expressed gratitude to God that no life was lost, but nevertheless lamented her loss. She enumerated goods she lost in the fire to include a microwave, freezers, a blender, mixers, bags of rice and other food items among others.

Narrating the incident, Chukwura said, “It all started in the afternoon. I saw a thick smoke at the back of my shop. There was this man who moved into one of the shops within the compound two weeks ago and was selling gas; the fire started from his shop. As soon as I saw the smoke, I quickly asked my salesgirls to come out of the shop; we couldn’t bring out anything because they all got burnt. Thank God no life was lost, but the properties…. Only God knows how I can get them back.”

Another person who suffered great loss in the gas inferno is Oluwasegun Alawoki, a power bike mechanic. The Nation met him at the site of his shop, now razed. He had come to gather what was left.

“It was a sad experience,” he recalled, sadly.  “Five Tokunboh cars and four power bikes got burnt. As you can see, nothing is left. We even tried to put out the fire with many fire extinguishers, to no avail. Properties worth over N50 million got burnt in the inferno” he said.

While Alawoki is calling on well meaning Nigerians for financial assistance, he is also calling on the government to ensure that gas owners don’t stay in residential areas any more, but properly situated gas stations. His words, “We are pleading with the government to allow us to continue using this place; you can see we are now back to square one; I can no longer fend for my family. I even have some debts to pay. Government should ensure that gas sellers don’t sell in residential areas anymore,” he said.

Although the fire was contained within a couple of hours, the people affected will not forget in a hurry.

The workshop has since been sealed off by Lagos State government. Speaking with Commander, Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC), CSO Omilani Temitope, who was on ground with other officials to monitor the movement of the people within the compound, said, “We have been here since the day the incident happened. As soon as we were alerted, we quickly alerted the appropriate agencies and they came down immediately. Our job here since then has been to give support security-wise, so that people will not take advantage of the situation to steal other people’s properties. We are only here to provide maximum security for residents. Don’t forget that it is not the whole of the mechanic workshop that got burnt, and we would not want anybody to come and carry what does not belong to them. So, we partner with the committee of the mechanic village to identify themselves before packing anything.”

According to Omilani, the fire started from the gas shop inside the mini mechanic village and ignited every other shop in the vicinity.

Speaking on why the place was sealed-off, even from those who resided within the compound, Omilani said, “You know once such a thing happens, government will have to seal-off the place for security reasons. Normally, people are not supposed to live within this compound but there is a man who built a house at the back and it’s unfortunate that they are using the same entrance with the mechanic village, and we have to lock all of them out. But on Saturday, the government decided to open only one entrance for the residents, pending the time the matter will be resolved amicably. Also it was directed that all the shop owners whose properties got burnt should pack the remains of their properties.”

Asked if the shop owners would have relocating, Omilani said “Only the Lagos State government has the final say.”

Sunday Nation also spoke with the landlord of the residential house located within the mechanic compound, Taoreed Babatunde Fashola. He said, “That fateful day, I was fast asleep when I heard people shouting. I peeped through the window and saw a thick smoke. I rushed out, only to discover that there was a fire outbreak.”

According to Fashola, the house was built long before the mechanics came there; “but unfortunately we now share the same compound. We quickly informed the Fire Service when the incident happened. We were all directed to go out of the compound and the place was sealed off. We all slept outside for 3 days. It was a terrible experience.”

He said the compound was opened on Saturday, three days after.

Fashola said the man, whose gas shop led to the explosion, moved in only three weeks earlier.

“I even queried those who gave him the shop but they could not say anything until this incident happened. Thank God no life was lost but for those who lost properties, the government should assist them financially because times are hard,” said Fashola.

Following the gas explosions in Lagos this week, the issue of safety in the Liquefied Petroleum Gas subsector has again taken centre stage, with industry stakeholders expressing concerns over the existing safety gaps, as the drive to boost cooking gas consumption gains momentum.

The Executive Secretary, Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers, Mr. Bassey Essien, stressed the need for safety consciousness in the LPG sector. “We have to be safety conscious and put all the safety parameters in place; especially with the nature of the product, we need to be very safety conscious and create the awareness among the customers. We cannot play down on safety,” he said.

  • Court remands prophetess in Kirikiri Prisons over alleged fraud

An Ikeja Special Offences Court on Wednesday remanded a Prophetess, Linda Mabi-Praise in Kirikiri Female Prisons for allegedly defrauding a company, Tophara Ventures Nigeria Limited of N503.3 million.

Mabi-Praise, according to Justice Sherifat Solebo, will stay in prison pending perfection of bail conditions granted her by the court.

She is facing an eight-count charge of stealing, obtaining money by false pretence and issuing dud cheques before the court.

Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) prosecutor, Frank Ofoma told the court that Mabi-Praise of Temple of Praise Church, located off Adeniran Ogunsanya Street, Surulere, Lagos and her company, Mutano Energy Limited, committed the offences in 2017 in Lagos.

Ofoma alleged Mabi-Praise received N503.3million in five tranches from the complainant, Tophara Ventures and subsequently issued three dud cheques to the company.

He alleged the defendants also on April 4, 2017, fraudulently obtained N80million from Tophara Ventures by falsely representing to the company that the money was for costs of diesel importation.

“On April 24, 2017 the defendants falsely obtained N238.2million from the complainant by claiming that the funds were for the purpose of diesel trade and supply.

“On April 24, 2017, the defendants dishonestly stole and converted N137.1million from the complainant and sometime in 2017, she also stole N48million from Tophara Ventures Nigeria Ltd,” she said.

The prosecution further alleged the prophetess, with an intent to defraud, had on May 3, 2017, issued three dud United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc cheques to Tophara Ventures.

He said the first cheque was dated October 30, 2015 and had the number 77148231 while the second cheque with number 77148216 and was dated May 3, 2017 for the sum of N5million each.

He said: “on May 3, 2017, she also issued a third cheque for N10 million which had the number 77148217 and was dated May 3, 2017.”

All the three cheques, he said, were dishonoured on presentation for payment on the grounds that there was no money standing credit in Mabi-Praise’s bank account.

Mabi-Praise however pleaded not guilty to the eight count charge filed against her by the EFCC.

Solebo granted the defendant to bail in the sum of N25 million with two sureties in like sum.

She ordered that the sureties must be resident in Lagos, provide proof of residency and proof of payment of tax to Lagos State government.

Justice Solebo adjourned the case until March 25 for trial.
