  • Surveyor petitions police over breach of contract

A Lagos-based surveyor, Mrs Halima Awosika has petitioned the Ogun State Police Command over alleged breach of agreement in a surveying contract and land deal.

In a petition written by Awosika’s lawyer,  Latif Rashidi &Co and dated January21,2019 said the Olaogbe Family of Igbesa community in Ogun State had engaged Awosika to carry out a perimeter and layout plan of 1,250 acres of land belonging to the family, but failed to honour the termsof agreement after Awosika paid a sum of N1.5 million to the family.

He accused the family of reneging on its agreement duly signed by its leadership and threatening Awosika, who demanded a refund of money she paid to cement the contract.

The petition reads: ‘’Our client(Awosika) on May 16, 2013 entered into an agreement with the Olaogbe Family of Igbesa, Ogun State, to carry out a permeter and layout plan of about 1,250 acres of land at Itamobaland in Ishaku , Igbesa in Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area, belonging to the family.

‘’When the agreement was duly executed between our client and the family, our client paid  the sum of N1.5 million cash to the family as fee of permission to access aside from other sundry expenses incurred by our client  running into thousands of naira that were not recorded.

‘’Eventually, our client mobilized to site. Not quite long , the family stopped her from continuing the assignment and surreptitiously brought in anothersurveyorto carry out the perimeter survey and layout plan. This is clearly in breach of clauses of the agreement duly signed by both parties

‘’After the breach of the agreement, we had series of consultations with the family, but they were very deceitful. After several peaceful and oral negotiations with the family , we wrote a letter to them dated February 30,2016. As at the time of this petition, there was neither an acknowledgement nor feedback to our letter.

‘’After patiently for another two years without meeting our demand, we wrote another letter on behalf of our client to the family  dated November 2,2018. Thisletter to did not see the light of day ast at the time of this petition. This shows that the Abiodun Olaogbe Family is nothing but a very cunny and deceitful family readily milking the vulnerable ones in the society.

‘’Our demand on behalf of our client has been 50 acres of land instead of the 1,250 acres as agreed in the executed and breached agreement.

‘’We wish to put it on record that further demand for the land by our client has met the force of threat to life by members of the Abiodun Olaogbe Family. They told our client to desist from asking for her entitlement otherwise, she should be satisfied with whatever she sees behind it.’’

Responding,  a top member of the family, Chief Alani Akinogun explained that  a suit over the ownership of the land had prevented Awosika from continuing with the contract.

He said: ‘’It is not true that our family had breached our agreement with the woman (Mrs Awosika) concerning the survey contract. Instead, what really happened was that a faction of the family had challenged our ownership of the land in court and the suit is still ongoing at Ota High Court.

‘’It was the court that has restrained both parties from carrying out work on the land and we have only complied with the ruling by asking her to suspend work on the landed property. She was not threatened and her job has not been given to another surveyor.’’

Six arrested for ‘killing’ surveyor after collecting ransom

Operatives of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS), Ogun State, have arrested six members of a kidnap gang, who allegedly lured a surveyor, Femi Olatunji, from Ogun State to Igbokoda in Ondo State and killed him after collecting ransom from his family.

The suspects –  Fademi Henry, Lebile Olatunji, Ehuwa Oririe, Olotu Tosin, Oluwole Ohunayo and Peter Omogbemi Richard– whose ages range from 20 to 24, reportedly lured the victim to Igbokoda on May 12 through phone calls. He was received by Fademi, the gang’s leader.

The Nation learnt that Fademi took Olatunji to Holy Trinity African Primary School, Igbokoda, where his accomplices waited. They tied the surveyor’s hands and feet, robbed him of his Pathfinder Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV), N20,000, Gionee phone and an ATM card with which they withdrew  N30,000 from his account.

A source said the suspects contacted the victim’s family and compelled them to pay ransom into their account, adding that they later killed him and threw his body into a river behind the primary school.

He said the family reported the case at the Ogun State Police Command.  FSARS later located the suspects’ den in Igbokoda, invaded it and nabbed six after a gun battle.

Police Commissioner Ahmed Iliyasu, who paraded the suspects at the weekend, described them as a “gang of inhuman beings who unleash terror and pains on people.”

He warned other criminals to leave the state.

Iliyasu said: “Recovered from the suspects are one Nissan Pathfinder SUV registered as EPE 603 AT, belonging to the victim; one pump action gun, one cut-to-size local double barrel pistol, seven cartridges and one Gionee phone.”

  • Surveyor seeks collective efforts in nation building

A fellow of the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors (NIS) and the Chief Executive Officer of Mapcotec Nigeria Limited, (Dr.) Segun Osifeso, in a recent review of the state of the nation, has concluded that better understanding and cooperation between those in authorities and the people would enhance the rate of socio-economic growth in the country.

Osifeso, who made this remark in a chat with newsmen at Ota, Ogun state recently, stressed that with the collective efforts of Nigerians, the attainment of an articulate socio-economic system and optimum use of the human and material resources in building a virile and healthy nation were achievable.

The NIS fellow further pointed out that the benefits inherent in cooperation from the people were enormous, especially in the quest to ensure qualitative service delivery to the populace, as well as to entrench good governance, stability, tolerance and morality in the nation’s polity.

He stated that with concerted efforts, the government would be able to concentrate on rebuilding the nation’s economic sector, thereby bailing the nation out of the common problems and impediments, which had stalled the country’s socio-economic and political development.

The Mapcotec boss commended the commitment of the nation’s leadership in the country’s socio-economic growth, adding that the people were quite appreciative of the government’s enormous contributions in cultivating a virile socio-political culture in the country.

  • Surveyors get 17 Fellows

The Nigerian Institution of Surveyors (NIS) has elevated 17 members to Fellows.
The new Fellows, according to a statement, were administered with the oath of office at an investiture last month, in Ibadan, Oyo State capital.

NIS President Hon Bode Adeaga, in a remark, said the members admitted Fellows were worthy of the honour.
Adeaga charged them to maintain the “highest moral standard and untainted integrity”, as well as “uphold a strict code of personal and professional conduct at all times.”

In a message on the occasion, Governor of Oyo State Senator Abiola Ajimobi challenged the surveyors to contribute to efforts that will make a difference in the economy and also “play by the rules”.

Speaking on the theme “Explaining the Security Challenges in Contemporary Nigeria,” the guest speaker, Prof. Isaac Olawale Albert, said surveyors had a key role in the overall security of the country.

The professor of Peace and Conflict Studies, at the University of Ibadan, charged them to contribute to efforts to bring lasting peace to the polity, as professionals cannot practise in an atmosphere of crisis and violence.

On the rising campaign of violence by the Boko Haram sect, Albert advised the government to dialogue with the extremist sect which is the greatest threat to the country’s corporate existence. He argued that the “use of force” would not solve the long-drawn crisis.

Aside the 17 Fellows, the professional body also bestowed awards of “distinguished fellows” on 27, some of them elderly members for their “passion, commitment and contribution” to uplifting the institution.
