  • Suspect faces theft charge

    A 39-year-old sales representative, Kolade Timothy, who allegedly stole his employer’s N723, 000, has been arraigned at an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court.

    He pleaded not guilty.

    Prosecuting Sergeant Michael Unah alleged that the defendant committed the offences from March 2017 to December 2018, at Smart B. Ocean Company Ltd, Meiran, Lagos.

    He said the defendant stole the money from the complainant, Mrs. Ajose Titilayo.

    Unah said the defendant, who also doubled as a driver to the complainant, admitted he stole the money to eat and take care of his sick wife.

    “Attempts to recover the money from the defendant proved abortive,” the prosecutor said.

    Chief Magistrate A. A. Fashola  adjourned till February 27.

     

     

  • Suspect faces N7.5m fraud charge

    A 41-year-old man, Godwin Ali, was yesterday in Sango-Ota, Ogun State, arraigned at a Chief Magistrates’ Court for a fraud of N7.5 million.

    Ali, who lives at 14 Oguntunde Street, Iyana-Ilogbo, Ota, is facing a two-count charge of fraud and obtaining money under false pretences.

    Prosecuting Sergeant Abdulkareem Mustapha told the court that the defendant committed the offences on May 16, 2017, at about 11:30am in Sango-Ota.

    He said the defendant collected N7.5 million under false pretences from the complainant, Nuru Mohammed, to supply Aluminium doors.

    “The defendant converted the money to personal use instead of fulfilling the agreement between the two parties.” Mustapha said.

    The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty.

    Chief Magistrate Mathew Akinyemi granted the defendant N2 million bail with two sureties in the like sum.

    He said the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and be employed.

    Akinyemi ordered that the sureties must show evidence of tax payment to the Ogun Government.

    He adjourned the case till February 28 for further hearing.

  • Suspect arraigned for alleged fraud

    An Ile-Ife Magistrates’ Court in Osun State has arraigned a 35-year-old man, Tunde Adebayo, for alleged N350,000 fraud.

    Prosecutor Sunday Osanyintuyi said the accused committed the offence between July 2017 and June 2018 on Ajanaku Estate, Ibadan Road, Ile-Ife.

    He alleged that the accused collected N350,000 from the complainant, Falope Mary, on the pretext of buying a plot of land for her at Gbarin Quarters, off Ifewara Road, Ile-Ife.

    Osanyintuyi alleged that the accused failed to purchase the land and fraudulently converted the sum to his own use.

    The accused pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge of pretence and fraud.

    Counsel to the accused, Mr. Sunday Olagbaju, pleaded for the bail of his client in most liberal term, saying he would not jump bail, but would produce reliable sureties.

    Magistrate Olalekan Ijiyode granted the accused N100,000 bail with one surety in the like sum.

    He said the surety must swear to affidavit of means, live within the court’s jurisdiction, while the address should be verified by the court.

    The case was adjourned till February 2 for mention.

  • I planned to make billions from kidnapping- Suspect

    The Niger State Police Command has arrested a suspected member of a kidnap gang that allegedly mastermindied the kidnap of one Abubakar Umar of Auna in Magama Local Government Area of the state.

    In his confessions to The Nation, the suspect, 24-year-old Mukhtar Abubakar said he had planned to make billions out of kidnapping before he was arrested, adding that abduction has become the easiest way to make money in Nigeria.

    He disclosed that their modus operandi was to kidnap victims and demand for ransom before releasing them. He said kidnapping over the years has brought in easy money for him.

    ”Kidnapping is the fastest business in Nigeria now; you can make your millions without too much stress. I love kidnapping and abducting people for easy money.”

    However, Mukhtar met his waterloo as he was arrested after the payment of the ransom demanded on their victim, Umar.

    According to Mukhtar, he and his gang invaded the house of their victim (Umar), kidnapped him and demanded the ransom of N150 million for his release, out of which N13.5 million was eventually paid for his release, after rigorous negotiation.

    Mukhtar disclosed that the kidnapping gang is made up of a team of nine, which is led by one Mallam Umaru.

    The suspect told The Nation that luck ran out of him when police detectives in  Kontagora apprehended him while trying to escape. He said the other members of his gang are still at large.

    He, however, lamented that he wss yet to get his own share of the money from the latest kidnap before he was arrested by police detectives attached to the Police Area Command in Kontagora.

    “I never knew that in my wildest imagination, the police will one day arrest me. Otherwise, I would have been swimming in millions of naira. It’s unfortunate.

    “I knew that whatever has a beginning must have an end. Honestly, this is the end of the road for me and my gang members. We had already planned how to share the loot but now, I’ve ended up in police net, too bad!”

  • Suspect held for sergeant’s death

    The police have arrested a man described as a notorious robber.

    Gbolahan Taiwo aka scammer, who was declared wanted about six months ago, was arrested at Akala, Mushin, on Tuesday.

    He is suspected to be a member of the gang that killed a police sergeant at Akala during an operation to rid the area of drug lords and bandits.

    Police spokesman Chike Oti, a Chief Superintendent (CSP), in a statement yesterday said Area ‘D’ Command, Mushin, Commander Akinbayo Olasoji, an Assistant Commissioner (ACP), led his men to arrest the suspect following a tip-off received by  Commissioner Imohimi Edgal.

    He said: “The gangster was seen in the ghetto of Akala. This prompted the CP to direct the Area Commander to lead an operation for the arrest of the kingpin, who has been terrorising the metropolis for sometime.

    “The raid carried out in the ghetto led to the arrest of Gbolahan, aka Scammer. He was searched and a phone and SIM cards were recovered from him.

    “Investigation into the source of the phone showed the owner as Memunat Opeyemi Zerbo, female, of Orile Iganmu. She was invited to the police station where she identified Taiwo as a member of a three-man gang of robbers, who stole her valuables, same day (Tuesday) about 5:17.

    “She narrated how the gang, armed with guns, cutlass and dagger, robbed her of her phone and SIM card, which they configured and without her authorisation, transferred N170, 000 from her account.

    “The suspect, who didn’t deny committing the crime, is helping the police in their effort to arrest other members of the gang at large.”

  • Suspect flees as teenager tortured for N200 ‘theft’ dies

    A 12-year-old girl who was reportedly tortured last month by her aunt for allegedly stealing N200, is dead, The Nation learnt yesterday.

    It was gathered that the girl, identified simply as Ifunaya, died two weeks after the torture resulted in internal bleeding from her head injury, which reportedly caused her death.

    A team of policemen from Ago Division in Isolo, Lagos, and officials of Child Protection Network (CPN), who visited the suspect’s home at the weekend, were told she had not been seen in the last three weeks.

    According to CPN’s Coordinator, Ebenezer Omejalile, the suspect, Ada Samuel, a resident of 107, Femi-Killa Street, Ago Palace Way in Okota, had abandoned her home.

    “We first visited the home about three weeks ago. The woman was not around. The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) collected her number and she was called that her attention was needed at the police station. Going by the information from the neighbour, her fleeing coincided with the time we first went there.

    “Her apartment was under lock. We won’t give up until there is justice for the late Ifunaya. The teenager suffered constant beating from her aunt. It is suspected that she suffered internal bleeding as a result of the beating and knock on her head.”

    Ifunaya’s alleged torture was exposed by the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) in Oshodi when she reported to school with swollen eyes.

    In an interview with SUBEB officials, Ifunaya said her aunt kept N200, which she saw and kept in the sitting room.

    The girl said she later used N100 from the money to buy drinking water for the house, adding that she misplaced the N100 balance.

    “I started looking for the money. I asked my uncle (her aunt’s husband, Samuel) if he saw the money. He started calling my name to leave him alone and started complaining.

    “So, my aunt came the next day, my uncle told my aunt that I said he took the N200 and my aunt started beating me with a cane, turning stick, a knife and a pot cover.

    “She later told my sister to go and buy ground Cameroon pepper and she poured it in my eyes. Then, she locked me outside. It was raining and I was shouting because my eyes were paining me.

    “I could not go to school the next day because I was sick. I told my aunt that I was sick, but she asked about kind of sickness, that I was praying to be sick. She took all the drugs she bought for me and refused to take me to the hospital. She beat me up again. When I complained that my eye was paining me, she slapped me on that swollen eye,” says the late Ifunaya in the video interview.

  • Suspect ‘stabs’ man to death in Ogun

    A 32-year-old man has been arrested by the police in Ogun State for allegedly stabbing another man to death.

    The suspect, Julius Oliseh, was nabbed around 2am yesterday for allegedly killing his victim, Isikilu Shittu, 23, at a funeral.

    It was gathered that a complaint was lodged at Mowe Police Station by the deceased’s brother, Akeem Shittu.

    The police said the deceased had an argument at the burial, which led to his allegedly stabbing the young man in the neck with a broken bottle.

    The Nation learnt that the victim died on the spot and the suspect, who was trying to flee, was arrested. Command spokesman Abimbola Oyeyemi said the body had been deposited at the mortuary.

    He said: “The Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Iliyasu, has ordered the transfer of the suspect to the homicide section of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID) for investigation and prosecution.

    “He warned that the command would not tolerate any act of thuggery or hooliganism capable of sending innocent people to untimely grave because human life is sacred.

    “The CP assured the public that the suspect would face the full wrath of the law to act as a deterrent to others.”

  • Suspect arraigned for assaulting woman

    A 45-year-old man, Anaemena Cletus, has been arraigned at an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court, Ekiti State, for allegedly turning a woman to a punch bag.

    Cletus, who is facing a one-count charge of assault, was alleged to have dealt several blows on the face and body of Miss Ronke Ayegoro, injuring her.

    Prosecutor Monica Ikebuilo said the accused committed the offence on May 27, about 5 pm, in Ijigbo, Ado-Ekiti.

    She said the offence contravened Section 351 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ekiti State 2012.

    Ikebuilo asked for an adjournment to enable her study the case file and assemble her witnesses.

    The accused pleaded not guilty. His lawyer, Mr. Timi Omotosho, urged the court to grant him bail, promising he will not jump bail.

    Magistrate Mrs. Omolola Akosile granted the accused bail at N20,000 with one surety.

    She adjourned the case till July 5 for hearing.

     

     

  • Why I’m stealing cows, by suspect

    Two cattle rustlers suspected to be terrorising the Eregi Fulani Camp have been arrested by the Niger State Police Command.

    One of them, 30-year-old Abdullahi Abubakar, said he started stealing cows because his parents refused to send him to school.

    Abubakar, who said, he had been involved in cattle rustling in Kudu, Mokwa Local Government Area, and Kataeregi in Katcha council for over five years, stated that he had no regret and he is ready to accept his fate.

    “I started stealing people’s cow at the age of 15 , since my parents refused to send me to school for reason I do not know, in fact I started with my father’s cows before stealing others people’s own. I have robbed and inflicted injuries on some cattle herders in Mokwa and Katcha Local Government Areas of the state.

    “I have no regret whatsoever I voluntarily started stealing people’s cows on my own. Nobody pushed me to start it; now that I have been caught, let the law take its course and at least my parents will have peace,” he said.

    Abubakar and 20-year-old Musa Shehu were trailed and arrested by policemen in Katcha after they attacked Abubakar Haruna, of Eregi Fulani Camp area, and stole  19 cows and 10 sheep.

    Police spokesman Muhammad Abubakar said the suspects were arrested following information, adding that 32 cows and 26 sheep were recovered from them.

    The spokesman said investigation into the incident was on, adding that the suspects will be arraigned after investigation.

     

  • People order for my guns across Nigeria, says suspect

    Niger State Police Command has intercepted and arrested a four-man gang, which allegedly manufacture firearms (dane guns) at Zungeru in Wushishi Local Government.

    The suspects include 54-year- old Badamasi Umar, 45-year-old Adamu Aliyu, 40-year-old Kabiru Tukura and 40-year-old Isyaku Madaki.

    Umar said he had been in the business for long, as people from other parts of the state and country ordered for his guns.

    “I’m known in my area as someone who manufactures local guns. People from other parts of the state and country order my guns. I have been in the trade for four years.

    “I produce local guns and sell to anyone that needs them. I am not interested in what the person uses the gun for. It may be for hunting or for security purposes. I sell the guns to make money to maintain my four wives and pay my children’s school fees,” he added.

    Umar said vigilance groups and security companies “buy our guns”, adding that he never knew there was a ban on illegal firearms, as he would have stopped.

    The Nation learnt the suspects were trailed and arrested by the Joint Task Force patrol deployed in Zungeru.

    Spokesman Muhammad Abubakar said the suspects had confessed to the crime, adding that 12 dane guns were recovered from them.
