Rivers: Suspected killers of police officer arrested

The police have arrested five suspects for allegedly killing Mohammed Alkali, a Deputy Superintendent Police (DSP), during the legislative rerun in Rivers State.

Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Ibrahim Idris, this week, set up a team to investigate the killing.

A statement yesterday in Abuja by Force spokesman Don Awunah gave the names of the suspects as: Noble Nwaerema, Dike Deinpiribo, Valentine Alalibo, Onwunari J. Warmate and Iloke Stephen.

The statement said: “The high-powered investigation team set up by IGP Idris and saddled with investigating the circumstances surrounding the gruesome murder of DSP Mohammed Alkali in Rivers State during the December 10 legislative rerun has had a major breakthrough with the arrest of the principal suspects listed below.

“Upon further interrogation of the suspects, it was discovered that they were active members of the group that gruesomely murdered DSP Mohammed in cold blood on December 10 in Rivers State.

“This vicious gang doubled as political thugs who were part of the group recruited by politicians from Rivers and neighbouring states to scuttle the December 10 rerun.”

It added: “The suspects have confessed to the crime and are cooperating with the police to recover the severed part of the slain officer.”

The police hinted that investigation was ongoing to find the missing orderly.

The statement said: “Investigation is on top gear to rescue the missing orderly to the murdered officer and recover the police vehicle that was snatched during the incident.

“The suspects were …linked to the leader of a major political party in the state.”

The police urged the public to give information that would enable them apprehend other persons believed to be linked to Alkali’s death.

“The IGP is hereby soliciting for information, support and cooperation of the people of Rivers State in apprehending the remaining members of the gang who are more likely to cause further harm to security personnel and innocent citizens.

“However, the police force is determined to ensure that gangsterism, cultism and sponsored political assassination become a thing of the past in Rivers State and other parts of Nigeria,” the statement added.

Ajimobi hails police over arrest of suspected killers of lawmaker

Oyo State Governor Abiola Ajimobi has hailed the Police for their quick intervention in apprehending some suspected killers of the late member of House of Assembly, Gideon Aremu.

He spoke through a statement signed by Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism Mr. Toye Arulogun.

The governor lauded the police command for exhibiting professionalism, commitment and dedication to a crime-free society by tracking down the suspected culprits in the gruesome murder of the former Chairman, House Committee on Information.

He said the government saw this laudable development by the police as working in line with the Ajimobi administration’s zero tolerance for criminality and brigandage, which once marked out Oyo as a state of violence.

The combination of similar efforts by both the government and security agencies account for the reason Oyo State was not included in the state’s listed as unsafe for foreign nationals in Nigeria by the United States (U.S.) Department of State.

The commissioner reiterated the government’s readiness to support the police and other security agencies, assuring residents and citizens of the government’s zero tolerance for criminal and violent acts.
