  • Suspected robbers kill nurse in Lagos

    A nurse at the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi, Lagos, who was pushed off a moving bus by suspected robbers last Wednesday, has died.

    The victim, Victor Aderoju, 33, a nursing officer II, died at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi-Araba where he was taken to by emergency workers after he was found unconscious near Bolade bus stop, Oshodi.

    It was gathered that the victim had boarded a bus early on Wednesday morning on his way to work, not knowing that the bus was being operated by one-chance robbers.

    After dispossessing him of his belongings, the robbers reportedly pushed him off the bus, which led to his sustaining a head injury.

    Aderoju was said to have regained consciousness at the hospital where he narrated what happened to him, but he eventually died last Thursday.

    A guard at the Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH), Ikorodu campus, Mr. Cletus Williams, last Friday allegedly killed his colleague, Okoro John,

    for rituals on the school’s premises.

    The deceased and the suspect, The Nation learnt, were employees of KRAMO-TEE, a private security company.

    It was gathered that the duo were on night duty when Williams cut the throat and wrist of Okoro.

    He was said to have been caught by other guards on duty and he fled into the bush, but they pursued and apprehended him.

    After he was arrested, the guards, our correspondent learnt, contacted the Chief Security Officer (CSO) of the school, who informed the police.

    Contacted, spokesman for the school Olarenwaju Kuye, said: “As I speak to you, the police are investigating the incident. The suspect has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCID), Panti, Yaba. The deceased and the suspect were outsourced guards from KRAMO-TEE and they were on night duty. We have called the proprietor of the company to inform her.”

    A statement by police spokesman Bala Elkana, a Deputy Superintendent (DSP), said the suspect was arrested by policemen from Sagamu Road Division in collaboration with the CSO.

    “The suspect used a sharp knife to slash the throat of the victim and also chopped off his right wrist. Homicide detectives from the SCIID are investigating the case to ascertain the motive behind the killing. The knife used for the murder has been recovered. The suspect will soon be arraigned for murder,” the statement said.

    Elkana said the police arrested a fake soldier on May 23, around 2:40pm on the Eko Bridge.

    The suspect, Musa Agile, was said to be obstructing traffic and harassing road users while being clad in military camouflage.

    “The suspect confessed that he is not a soldier. Investigation is ongoing and he will be charged to court,” said Elkana.

  • Command nabs suspected robbers

    The Delta State Police Command yesterday arrested two suspected robbers terrorising Abraka community and its environs.

    The hoodlums were arrested following a tip-off after a robbery around the university community at Abraka in Ethiope East Local Government.

    Police Commissioner Adeyinka Adeleke, who confirmed the incident, said the suspects were being transferred to the command headquarters in Asaba, Delta State.

    The hoodlums, who gave their names as Ezekiel Akpos, 26, from Ovuorie community in Ethiope East Local Government and Kingsley Daniel, 27, from Orogun in Ughelli North Local Government confessed to the crime.

    Akpos said he was part of the three-man gang which robbed Chief Harrison Jessa and other victims in Abraka during the Easter.

    Chief Jessa, a businessman, said the robbers broke into his home at about 1am and carted away huge sums made from his business during the Easter holidays.

    “They also took my phones and gold necklace, among other valuables.

    Another victim, Mrs. Tina Iwhiwhi, said the robbers attacked her during the Easter holidays and made away with cash, three phones, jewellery and Automatic Teller Machine (ATM) card with which they withdrew about N400,000.

    They hailed the police for the swiftness in arresting the hoodlums.

     

  • Police kill four suspected robbers

    The police in Delta State have killed four suspected robbers terrorising Isiokolo in Ethiope East Local Government and its environs, The Nation has learnt.

    Three members of a vigilance group were injured following a gun duel with the police.

    It was gathered that the gang was responsible for the attack on the corpers’ lodge and Bush Bar at Isiokolo a few days ago.

    A source said the suspected robbers were killed on Monday by a team of policemen from Isiokolo Police Division during a gun duel.

    The source said the police had been on the trail of the suspects for weeks.

    It was learnt that the police, who were assisted by a vigilance group, attacked the hoodlums in Kokori town around 1:20 hours, after a robbery in the area.

    The Nation gathered that the police, following a tip-off, swooped on the suspects at the wee hours of the day, but during the battle, three members of the vigilance group were shot by the robbers, thus they sustained injuries.

    Four of the robbers were killed, others escaped, while two locally made guns and 10 cartridges were recovered from them.

    Police spokesman Chuks Oresewezie confirmed the incident.

    He said efforts have been intensified to arrest the fleeing robbers.

     

  • Suspected robbers kill man

    Two suspected robbers at the weekend killed a generator repairer, Chinedu Igboanugo, at Nkwelle-Ogidi community in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State.

    The suspects were alleged to have also stabbed the deceased’s girlfriend to death.

    The Nation learnt that the deceased was asleep with the girlfriend, while his generator was on.

    Power supply was said to have suddenly went off at about 12:30am, which prompted the girlfriend to went outside to know what was amiss.

  • Police arrest suspected robbers

    The police in Bayelsa State on Christmas Eve arrested two suspected robbers.

    It was gathered that the suspects were apprehended at Swali, Yenagoa about 7pm.

    Police spokesman Asinim Butswat said the arrest was made possible by the security measures put in place for the Yuletide by Police Commissioner Aminu Pai Saleh.

    He said the suspects are Henry Kingsley, male, 28, from Nembe Local Government Area of Bayelsa State and Moses Roland, male, 25, from Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State.

    Butswat said they were nabbed in possession of one locally-made revolver pistol with one .9mm live ammunition and one locally-made pistol with one AA live ammunition.

    He said: “On December 24, about 1900hours, two notorious robbers were arrested at Swali near United Bank for Africa (UBA), while waiting to rob people of their money.

    “The suspects are in custody and are undergoing interrogation.

    “The public are advised to report suspicious persons in their neighbourhood to the police.”

  • Three suspected robbers held in Ondo

    Ondo State Police Command yesterday apprehended three suspected robbers.

    They were alleged to have stolen a trailer loaded with 900 bags of cement.

    The Nation gathered that the robbers, who operated on the Lagos/Ore Expressway, hijacked the truck loaded with cement and stole it.

    They were reportedly arrested at a location on the road while offloading the cement.

    Police spokesman Femi Joseph, who confirmed the arrest, said the police dexterity led to the arrest of the suspects.

    He gave their names as Abubakar Musa, Abubakar

    Saliu and Athahiru Musa, saying they lived in Okpela, in Edo State.

    Joseph said the suspects have confessed to the crime, adding that they would soon be arraigned.

  • Suspected robbers attack Bureau De Change operator

    •Millions of dollars stolen

    Suspected robbers operating on a motorcycle have reportedly attacked a yet-to-be identified female Bureau De Change operator in Aba, Abia State.

    The gunmen reportedly made away with millions of dollars.

    The Nation learnt that the woman later died in hospital, but Police Commissioner Chris Ezike she was still alive.

    The incident, it was gathered, occurred at the popular Market Road section, where Bureau De Change operators stayed.

    The woman was said to have arrived Aba with huge sums of dollars and other foreign currencies, which she had sourced from a bank.

    They are expected to be in high demand during the Christmas season.

    A source said the hoodlums, who apparently had knowledge of her return and the purpose for which she traveled outside the state, trailed the woman to the area.

    Bureau De Change operators refused to comment on the incident.

    The Nation learnt that the operators are now doing business in fear.

     

  • Angered by victims’ absence from home, suspected robbers leave a note:’We’re coming back o !!! Goodluck’

    Frustrated by the absence of their victims from home, suspected robbers penultimate Saturday left a note threatening to come back.

    The incident happened at Grace Estate, in Iyesi area of Ado Odo/Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State, after the robbers broke into a three-bedroom apartment when the occupants were away from home.

    The robbers were said to have made attempt to enter the apartment through the main entrance to the building, but they could not open the main door.

    It was said that the robbers broke into the building through the ceiling of an adjoining flat and carted away one of the electronic gadgets in the house.

    They were also said to have made attempt to break into the rooms, but the doors were too strong for them to unlock or vandalise.

    Apparently frustrated over their not too successful operation caused by the absence of occupants of the building, the hoodlums were said to have left a note promising to return at no given date.

    The note sighted by our correspondent reads: ‘’We are coming back o !!! Goodluck.’’

    The incident was reported to the Obasanjo Farm Police Division, Ota.

    It was learnt that policemen from the division visited the scene, while the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of the station had directed his men to embark on constant patrol and surveillance of the community to keep the gang in check.

    Speaking with The Nation, the owner of the building, Mr Dare Ogunyombo explained that he was away from home for some days with his family, when the gang visited his residence.

    He said: ‘’ The suspected robbers visited my residence while I was away from home with my wife and children. They ransacked the house and scattered everywhere.

    ‘’I noticed that they fruitlessly tried to force their way into my apartment through the main door to the building. They however broke the ceiling of the next flat and entered my apartment through the roof, while they carted away a satellite television decoder in the living room.

    ‘’They also made attempt to enter my room but the door was too strong for them to unlock or break. I guess they were in a hurry to rob and because they were frustrated, they left a note on the table threatening to come back for me and my family.’’

    Contacted, the spokesman of Ogun State Police Command, Mr Abimbola Oyeyemi promised to revert to our correspondent. But he was unable to so at press time.

  • Police kill three suspected robbers in Taraba

    Taraba State Police Command yesterday recorded another success in its war against robbery and terrorism.

    It killed three suspected robbers and injured many.

    Speaking to The Nation on WhatsApp, Commissioner David Akinremi said the robbers were a syndicate, who mounted a roadblock in a village in Bali Local Government.

    He said one of the criminals was killed during crossfire with the police, adding that two died while trying to escape.

    The police boss said: “Today (yesterday) about 0930hrs, information was received that a gang of robbers were operating on Kwassa feeder road in Bali Local Government. “

  • Suspected robbers terrorise Rivers residents

    There was palpable fear on Monday evening among residents of Ogbumnuabali area of Port Harcourt, in Port Harcourt City Local Government Area of Rivers State, when suspected robbers stormed the area.

    The incident happened in Ogbuga and Ogbundah streets around 7 p.m.

    The community, which is usually a beehive of activities due to its high concentration of computer and electronic businesses, was deserted within seconds as the hoodlums seized the neighbourhood.

    A source told The Nation that the gunmen shot sporadically as they dispossessed their victims of their valuables, including phones, cash and personal effects.

    He said the community had been under siege for a while without security agencies curtailing them.

    Also, a cab driver told a story of how he ran into them last week and his passengers scampered for safety.

    The hoodlums were said to have robbed petty traders of their money and phones, forcing shop owners to lock up and run for safety.

    A resident, who spoke in confidence for security reasons, told our reporter that the robbery had been recurrent.

    She said: “We live in fear now. If we hear any noise, we run for our lives. We belive the gunmen can come at any time. I can no longer stay in my shop till 9 o’clock because of fear. We are not safe again; even to sleep in the night is with one eye open.”

    Another resident added: “They even go as far tearing window nets to steal whatever they can lay their hands on. This place is no longer what it used to be. We are pleading with the state government to provide security for us, especially in this election period.”

    Efforts to reach police spokesman Nnamdi Omoni, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), were unsuccessful last night.

    He did not answer calls made to his mobile phone, neither did he return the calls.
