  • Suspected armed robbers arrested

    The Kebbi State Police Command has arrested four suspected armed robbers from Niger Republic who have been terrorising residents of the boarder area of Kangiwa and Kamba local government areas of the state.

    Addressing newsmen at the police headquarter, the Kebbi State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Tonye E. Ebitibituwa said that one of the suspects, Hajiya Sa’adatu Mohammad, 40,  was arrested at Barki Daji in Kangiwa area of the state.

    The suspect was accused of being the leader of the notorious armed gang that operates along Kangiwa – Kamba Road. He further disclosed that the gang’s accomplices had also been arrested. He said: “We have arrested the matron of the armed  robbery syndicate that comes from Niger Republic to unleash terror on motorists on Kangiwa-Kamba Road. They are foreign elements, They come from their country, strike on this road by blocking and dispossessing motorists of their valuables. After operation, they run back to their country.”

    On how the suspects were arrested, he said his men mounted 24-hour surveillance on the area and villages surrounding it. He said they have since commenced investigation on the woman’s case.

    “The gang has stopped coming but in the course of our surveillance, the woman was acfingerd as their matron. We ransacked her house and found three young men. Though no weapon was found in her house, in the area she has been known as the matron of the armed robbers. Some time ago she was arrested for same offence,” he added.

    Meanwhile, the police commissioner reiterated his command’s commitment to make the state crime-free.He urged the people of the state to report any suspicious persons or movement in their communities to any nearby police formation for prompt action.

     

  • Suspected Fulani herdsmen kill 21 Tiv in Benue

    •Police: one person dead

    Suspected Fulani headsmen last Sunday killed 21 Tiv famers in Yogbo village, Guma Local Government Area of Benue State.

    The District Head of the village, Chief Francis Donko, told our correspondent that the assailants stormed the village at 8am, when most of the residents were in church, and killed the women and children at home.

    The village head averred that the killers were armed with sophisticated weapons and burnt down many houses and two residents.

    Police spokesman Daniel Ezeala, a Deputy Superintendent (DSP), confirmed the incident.

    But he said only one person was killed.

    Ezeala added that a detachment of armed policemen had been drafted to the area to keep the peace.

     

  • Suspected burglar electrocuted in Ebonyi

    A middle-aged man was yesterday electrocuted in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital.

    The police said the man was trying to break into a grocery store, when the incident occurred.

    Police spokesman Sylvester Igbo said: “This morning, we received information that a burglar broke into a shop at No. 22, Ezza Road. When he went into the ceiling, there was no electricity. Power was restored while he was still up there and he was electrocuted.

    “When the owner of the shop got there this morning and saw that the shop’s doors were damaged, she alerted the police, who discovered the body in the ceiling.

    “The body is yet to be identified and has been deposited at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki (FETHA). The police have started investigating the incident to unravel what happened, if the deceased had accomplices and how many people were with him”

    The owner of the shop, Mrs. Chukwu Virtue, said: “I have lost over N1.8 million to burglars. This is the eighth time burglars are coming to my shop.

    “This morning, my brother came to the shop and discovered that the padlock had been cut and the roof of my neighbour’s shop had been broken. We alerted the police and the man in the roof was confirmed dead.”

    Igbo said two suspected robbers; Friday Emeba and Emeka Iwuoha were arrested on the Enugu-Abakaliki Expressway.

    He said two locally made double-barrelled pistols, a vehicle number plate, two live cartridges, one chisel hammer and two handsets were recovered from the suspects.
