Delta State Police Commissioner CP Abaniwonda Olufemi said on Wednesday that operatives of the state command arrested 80 suspects in connection with armed robberies, frauds, thefts, and other criminal activities in August 2025 in the state.

He also said the Command recorded the recoveries of 31 firearms, 86 ammunition and cartridges, and 50 laptops and mobile phones during the month under review.

CP Olufemi disclosed this on Wednesday at the state’s Command headquarters in Asaba during a press conference to reel out the achievements of the command in August.

Reviewing the feat, the police commissioner said on August 16, 2025, a suspect, Bassey Udoh, 39, from Custom Market, Asaba, was apprehended during a stop-and-search operation on DBS Road.

He said a search revealed a Beretta pistol in his possession.

The CP said preliminary investigations suggested he was part of a burglary syndicate and that he purchased his firearm for N30,000.

The CP said the operatives responding to credible information raided a hideout and recovered one pump-action gun, two double-barreled guns, and cartridges. The suspects, according to him, are in custody, and investigations are ongoing.

Olufemi said on August 30, one Albert Opene, 58 years, from Ogbeze Street, Ashaka, was arrested when a police patrol intercepted a Toyota Sienna and discovered 75 live cartridges under the driver’s seat.

The suspect was arrested, and investigations are continuing.

He said that on August 11, an ex-convict was arrested for motorcycle theft.

He said the suspect, Precious Okoro, 27 years, and his accomplice, Buhari Deyegu, 18 years, both from Asaba, were apprehended following a report of a missing motorcycle.

The police collaborated with Nigeria Hunters Security Services to arrest the suspects and recover the stolen motorcycle.

He said Okoro is an ex-convict who had been released shortly before the theft.

The CP also said that on August 26, a robbery victim reported the theft of phones, laptops, and a 65-inch television by a five-man gang.

He stated that a subsequent intelligence-led investigation led to the arrest of one Faith Perry and the recovery of one of the stolen phones.

He indicated that all arrested individuals are still in custody while investigations continue to further unravel the extent of their criminal activities and recover any additional stolen property.

The CP further said that between August 11 and 16, operatives arrested a syndicate of robbers and fraudsters in Warri, Ughelli, and Edo State.

He gave the names of the eight arrested suspects: Ibrukoko (32), Obruche (31), Lucky Umukoro (28), Emmanuel Buruutu (22), Musa Abdulahi (27), Sokoh (30), Preye Julius (36), and Kadija Abass (30)

He asserted that the suspects specialized in robbing and defrauding victims by pretending to seek directions, hypnotizing them before stealing their valuables, including phones and motorcycles.

CP Olufemi said a total of two stolen Toyota Camry vehicles and 16 suspected stolen iPhones were recovered, stressing that they had reportedly defrauded victims of over N23.5 million and stolen approximately 42 lady bikes from 12 victims.

All suspects and exhibits are said to be in custody, and investigations are ongoing.

Stressing that the above and other feats were recorded by the Command during the month under review, CP Olufemi noted, “It is our mandate as given to us by the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetoku, that all Deltans sleep with their two eyes closed.

“Deltans can attest to the fact that in recent times, the state has become very hot for criminals. I continue to assure all Deltans that the command under my watch will not relent in this mandate and will continue to go after criminally minded individuals in the state and ensure that they are arrested and brought to justice.”

Chief Magistrate B. I. Bakare made the order following a charge of conspiracy, attempted murder, malicious damage, unlawful assault and conduct likely to cause breach of peace, brought against the men by the police.

Before remanding the defendants, Bakare noted that the magistrate court had no jurisdiction to entertain a charge of attempted murder.

He directed the police to apply for a remand warrant in line with Section 264 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Laws (ACJL) of Lagos State, 2015, following which prosecution counsel, Mr Morufu Animashaun, made an oral application pending the DPP’s advice.

Magistrate Bakare granted his prayer and remanded the defendants till November 29.

The police, in the temporary charge marked P/99/18, alleged that the defendants, on or about August 26, 2018, at Itun-Agan Community, Tin Can Island, Apapa, Lagos, conspired and attempted to kill Omoshola Segun, Lot Ikuesan and Abudu Adekunle.

They were also alleged to have unlawfully and maliciously damaged three buildings belonging to the trio of Segun, Adekunle and Asemudara Alaba, which were valued at N47.5 million.

The police also alleged that all the suspects unlawfully assaulted one Olorunyomi Elejuawa, and Inspector Ogundipe Oluwaseyi, who was on official duty of peace-making.

The offences according to Animashaun, are contrary to and punishable under Sections 411, 230(1), 230, 339, 172, 174(a) (b) and 160(1) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.

The petition was subsequently investigated by a team led by Mr. Samuel Olukayode, a deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), following which the suspects were arrested, the prosecutor said.
