    Sharks suspend ‘contract rebel’, Eguavoen

Austin Eguavoen’s battle to get Sharks to hand him a written contract has taken a new turn, as the Edo born coach has been suspended by the Port Harcourt side.

Sources in Port Harcourt had revealed that news of Eguavoen’s suspension first filtered out on Tuesday morning, with the club insisting that: “Eguavoen is on suspension because he abandoned the club on the opening day of the league.”

However by Tuesday evening, with the club probably realising that the line will not work, because the former Super Eagles coach had given them verbal notice before the action, they changed direction.

Sharks are now saying that Eguavoen is not on suspension, but he is not expected back in Port Harcourt either.

“Since the coach left because his contract is not ready, he should stay where he is until we have finished putting the papers together,” is the line our sources say Sharks are now toeing.

This is not the first time Eguavoen will go to war with a team in the NPFL. His tenure at Enyimba was also said to be fractious because of his insistence on being given a written contract.

  • Rivers workers suspend planned strike

Workers in Rivers State have suspended the planned strike that would have begun today in protest of illegal deductions from their salaries.

The decision to suspend the strike was reached after a meeting between Labour leaders and the Head of Service, Mr. Samuel LongJohn.

The suspension of the strike was made known yesterday in a statement signed by the State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Dr. Chris Oruge; his counterpart in the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), Mr. Chika Onuegbu and the Chairman of the Joint Negotiating Council (JNC), Mr. Chukwu Emecheta.

Besides the illegal deductions from their salaries in September and October, they workers complained of the non-payment of the 7O per cent salary relativity and the minimum wage, as well as the government’s refusal to stop deductions by the Federal Mortgage Bank and the removal of the Finance Commissioner, Dr. Chamberlain Peterside.

It was resolved at the meeting that all deductions – the social services contributory levy, the contributory pension and the new personal income tax regime – be stopped until an agreement is reached between the government and the labour unions.

The statement reads: “That a technical committee comprising representatives of the government and labour unions be constituted to critically study the issues involved and make recommendations as appropriate.

“On the refusal to pay arrears of 7O per cent salary relativity, it was agreed that the payment of arrears be paid in three installments, with effect from November, 2012.

“On the payment of minimum wage arrears, it was resolved that the labour unions should produce the agreement reached with the government on the matter for implementation.

“On the Federal Mortgage Bank’s deductions, the meeting agreed that the representatives of the bank would be invited to a meeting with the union leaders and representatives of the government and that the money deducted be kept in a suspense account by the Satte Accountant-General, pending the resolution of all issues on the matter.”

It was resolved that the removal of the finance commissioner, as demanded by the workers, be between the labour leaders and Governor Rotimi Amaechi.

  • NBC threatens to suspend licences of two stations

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) yesterday asked ADABA FM, Akure and Ondo State Radiovision Corporation to desist from unwholesome programming or face sanctions.

In a statement in Abuja, NBC noted with grave concern, the unprofessional conduct of the Continental Broadcasting Services Ltd, operators of ADABA FM, Akure and Ondo State Radiovision Corporation (OSRC) in the ongoing campaigns.

According to the statement signed by NBC’s Director- General, Mr. Yomi Bolarinwa, the two stations have breached the provisions of the National Broadcasting Commission Act and the Nigeria Broadcasting Code.

The code stipulates: “In adherence to the principles of pluralism, equal airtime shall be provided to all political parties or views, with particular regard to the amount of time and belt during political campaign periods.”

NBC said despite several warnings, one of the stations continued to exhibit bias in political coverage and broadcast of jingles in favour of a political party.
