  • Concerned stakeholders demand end to Lagos SWAN crisis

Concerned stakeholders demand end to Lagos SWAN crisis

Some notable  stakeholders of the Sports Writers of Nigeria, Lagos State Chapter, have raised their voices over the seemingly unending crisis of leadership in the state chapter that was once the pride of sports journalism in Nigeria.

The concerned stakeholders group led by two former chairmen of the state chapter, Hon. Frank Ilaboya, and Mr. Tony Ubani, said they are ready to team up with other well-meaning Nigerians, associations and groups to dialogue towards bringing peace back to Lagos SWAN.

Ilaboya, said Tuesday in Lagos that, the crisis of leadership where the state chapter has two chairmen in place, one coming after the other, does not speak well of the chapter which stands out as the oldest beat and most vibrant association under the Nigeria Union of Journalism (NUJ).

He added that, the situation has lingered for too long unresolved and this is fast affecting the credibility of sports journalism in Nigeria as Lagos has the biggest number of sports related media outfits and the largest number of members across the country.

Ilaboya noted that, the most painful part of it all is inability of Lagos SWAN members, young and old, to access the association’s secretatiat built specifically for members at the Lagos National Stadium, in Surulere.

“Members now hang around at the National Stadium complex, Lagos instead of comfortably having good times at the SWAN secretariat building.

“The prolonged crisis which has forced the premature abandonment of the secretariat by all members is fast making the edifice desolate and dilapidated.”

Another former Chairman of the Lagos SWAN in its progressive years, Tony Ubani, also a member of the concerned stakeholders group committed to resolving  the crisis and Group Sports Editor of the Vanguard Newspapers, stressed that, the great contributions of the Ministry of Youths of Sports, that donated the plot of land at the National stadium for the building, the commitment of the Lagos State government  and other notable organisations and individuals that spent millions of naira to build the edifice and the sacrifices made by the Lagos SWAN members in putting together a peaceful and vibrant association in over 40 years or more, are gradually being destroyed.

“That is why we have brought ourselves together as the Concerned Stakeholders of Lagos SWAN to muster strength in ensuring that peace return to the association.”

Other members of the Concerned Stakeholders Group who are also committed elders of the association, include; Mr. Pat Omorodion, the Assistant Group Sports Editor of the Vanguard Newspapers, Mr. Adekunle Salami, Group Sports Editor, New Telegraph Newspapers, Mr. Chris Okpara, Group Sports Editor, Guardian newspaper, Mr. Dapo Sotuminu, former Group Sports Editor of Compass Newspspers.

Others  members are Mr. George Aluo, former Group Sports Editor, the Sun Newspapers and presently the Chairman of the Nigeria National League, Blessing Nwosu of Silverbird TV and Gloria Adeshi of SuperSports.

  • Badeh’s swan song

It was just a matter of time before they were sacked. The public had expected that they would be shown the way out immediately after President Muhammadu Buhari assumed office on May 29. But the president chose to bide his time and for this Nigerians tagged him Baba go slow. It is good to know what one is doing. If the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Air Chief Marshal Alex Sabundu  Badeh, and others had been sacked before July 13, we may have missed out in the theatrical tantrums now being thrown up by Badeh.

The president has shown that he knows what he is doing. While we were accusing him of being too slow, he would have been having a good laugh at us because only he knows what he wants to do – remember “I am for nobody and I am for everybody”.  He warned us in his inauguration speech with that statement, but we chose to make light of what he said.

It was a long wait as we waited on him to fire the Defence and Service chiefs. It is the practice for a new leader to  pick those he will work with to ensure their loyalty to him. A leader who does not make a wise choice in this regard will suffer the consequences of his action. Besides, Buhari knows the military inside out having served in the institution and rising to become its Commander-in-Chief in 1983.

That was buhari’s first coming as head of state and for 18 months before his ouster by his army chief, then Maj Gen Ibrahim Babanginda, Nigerians saw what he could do. His 18-month tenure as military  head of state was his defining moment and it marked the beginning of his lasting romance with the people. As head of state, he provided purposeful leadership even though he was dictatorial. What I still don’t understand is why will a former military leader command such large political followership some 30 years after leaving office.

What this says is whether a military or civilian leader, the people are less concerned as long as their expectations are met. Beyond being tired of the immediate past government, Buhari’s clean record also accounted majorly for the people’s choice of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the last elections. So, they were expecting him to move at the speed of light just as he did as military leader. He has chosen to be slow and steady.

It’s been about a month since he fired Badeh, the Service chiefs – Lt Gen Kenneth Mininah (army),  Admiral Usman Jibrin (navy), Air Vice Marshal SolBadeh does not cut the image of the straight ram rod soldier that we know of. You cannot see hm in mufti and ever think that he is a soldier, but he ended up being our CDS, courtesy of former Presdent Goodluck Jonathan. We cannot blame Jonathan for making him CDS, we should blame Badeh for not rising to his office. Following his appointment in January 2014, he vowed that by April, Boko Haram would have been history. He did not deliver on his promise until he left office.

When he was making that promise did he  not take stock of his weapons? Or did he speak without knowing what he had in his armoury? You do not fight a war with mouth, you do so with arms and ammunition. Now he is telling us that he vowed to rout Boko Haram with bare hands. Is that a serious CDS? Badeh was a disaster of a CDS. He was just talk, talk and talk; no action. I am not surprised that he still does that in retirement. The man simply enjoys listening to his voice. The problem is that he does not know when to stop.

This is why today he is indicting himself with his own mouth. That shows you how brilliant an officer he is. Is it not the same Badeh who is today lamenting the state of the military that was praising Jonathan for equipping the military? Where are the equipment today? If the military had no equipment, as he said, with what did he want his troops to fight Boko Haram?  We now know why some soldiers refused to face the insurgents.  Do you fight a well equipped group like Boko Haram with your hands? Why was Borno State Governor Kashim Shettima crucified by Badeh and other officers when he said Boko Haram is better equipped than the military?

Has Badeh not today confirmed Shettima’s statement? Why didn’t he speak up then? Why is he doing so now? Is it because he was fired? Did he expect that he would be CDS for life? Our leaders don’t have the fear of God. If they do, some of them will not behave the way they do as if there is no tomorrow. Badeh who yesterday was court martialling some officers and soldiers for fleeing from fighting Boko Haram  is today unwittingly justifying those men’s action with his statement. What allocutus (mitigation of sentence plea) could be better than this? Even going by what he said should the men have been tried in the first place?

Badeh was CDS of a kind? When the Chibok school girls were abducted in April last year, he felt unconcerned. When his Vintim hometown in Adamawa State was overrun by Boko Haram, he saw nothing bad in that. To him, it could have, as well, been an attack on the village of any other Nigerian. The insurgents’ action was lost on him – that the attack was a message to Nigerians that even their highest security chief can be got. Yet, Badeh treated the matter lightly. His offhanded dismissal of the attack gave Boko Haram the fillip to overrun many places in the Northeast then and hoist its flag in these ‘conquered’ territories.

If that is not an offence, I wonder what is. Shouldn’t Badeh be court martialled for this and related issues?

  • AKEEM ADEYEMI: Boxing is the secret of Alaafin’s longevity

AKEEM Adeyemi, first son of His Royal Majesty, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III – the Alaafin of Oyo – has given fresh insight to the longevity of the foremost Yoruba’s monarch.

Born 76 years ago, the Alaafin of Oyo, who succeeded Alaafin Gbadegesin Ladigbolu II, is one of the longest-reigning monarch in Nigeria since he will be marking his 45th anniversary on the throne in November. Speaking exclusively to The Nation Sport& Style, Akeem said the Alaafin’s love for pugilism right from his early days has contributed largely to his prolonged existence, adding that his beloved father actually fuelled his interest and that of his siblings for sport.

Last weekend, Akeem was the cynosure of all eyes when he was honoured as the Oyo State’s Sports Personality of the Year by the state’s chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigerian (SWAN) at a well-attended gathering in Ibadan. His choice was unanimous having berthed and financed the wave-making Atiba United (Football Club) of Oyo which gained promotion from the Nationwide League to

Nigeria National League (NNL) in less than two years after its formation.

“Sports is a natural phenomenon in Alaafin Adeyemi’s family and as many people already knew Kabiyesi was as a footballer and good boxer in his youthful days and most of us actually took after him in this regard,” the amiable ‘crown prince’ told S&S correspondent, Lanre Agiri.“Kabiyesi actually made sporting activities a paramount routine for every member of the family, especially the children right from our early ages.

“He would wake us very early in the morning in order to join him to jog round the town before commencing other businesses of the day. It might interest you to know that although Baba still does that up till now despite his age and I want to believe that is one of the reasons that he has remained strong despite his old age.

“Personally, I played football very well when I was at Olivet Baptist High School Oyo and I was also

involved in track and field events in athletics. In fact, I was the school’s sports prefect during my secondary school days and you can see that my love for sport was inborn,” he remarked.

He further delved into the sporting background of the royal family and explained how his father instilled into every member of the family perseverance, self discipline, and sense of responsibility which was derived from the routine that the Kabiyesi had taken them through right from their early ages.

The young Adeyemi who recently just won the ticket to vie for a seat at the House of Representatives under the banner of All Progressives Congress (APC) gave further insight into the activities of the Alaafin from the cradle to the crown. Excerpts…

How did you manage the prestige and honours of royalty with your sporting activities in school?

Royalty is one thing and the sporting activity was another thing. Then, I never allowed my background from a royal home to affect me. I never allowed such to get into my head; and we were never trained to exhibit unnecessary affluence. What is important to me is the welfare of people around me. Even till now, I still play football together with our ex-internationals that are based in Oyo town at Durbar Stadium and I take their wellbeing as my utmost priority. They have an all Stars Team in Oyo and they play football regularly among themselves which allow us to interact and play together – you can verify that from anybody that follows football in the town.

Did you know Kabiyesi as an active sports person while growing up?

I did not really meet Kabiyesi as an active sports person since Kabiyesi enthroned about more than 40 years ago, he had stopped competing, but he did narrate to us about his exploits on the football field and boxing ring in the 60s. According to him, when he was playing boys club in the 50s, he was nick named ‘Ade One’ and when he took to boxing, his nickname changed to Ade Slumber Boy – just because he used to send his opponents to slumber land. My father said his dad did not want him to stay in the palace then, so the affluence in the palace could not corrupt him, so he was sent to live outside which exposed him to the wild world. He stated boxing with Broadway Boxing Club at Lafiaji area of Lagos Island as an amateur boxer. Some of his memorable bouts were against Ben Mendogo at Oyingbo Boxing Club, the one against Double Adaptor Alabi, Rena Cole, Oris Obilaso, Ben Agu who later represented Nigeria at the Commonwealth Games, Surprise Akins, amongst others. He said he started from fly-weight to Bantam weight and retired as Bantam-Feather weight. While describing his style of boxing, Kabiyesi said ‘because of my height, my fighting style was bob-and-wave. I bobbed. If you see some of his pictures when he was young, you would hardly believe that he was a boxer since there was no cut or scar to show on his body.  He also said he had the habit of sparring with bigger and professional boxers to sharpen his reflexes. Of course, I loved to road walk and rope skipping.

What are the things that Kabiyesi and you are doing at present to sustain sports especially within your locality?

Many things. You as a sports writer must have heard about the fast development of sports in Oyo town and the state at large through sustainable efforts at the grassroots. Kabiyesi in recent times had brought back glamour to the game of boxing which had been in the doldrums for many years in Oyo State through numerous financial and moral support. Many grassroots soccer competitions are being organised nationally and within the town in the name of Alaafin to discover new talents. I have instituted sports programmes that will benefit pupils in all primary schools in my locality; that is where the awareness should start if we desire to see better sports men and women in the future.

You established a team that had now gained promotion to NNL within the space of two seasons, how did you achieve that?

It was achievable through the determinations and hard work of the good staff we have in Atiba Local Government. I must give kudos to the Head of Local Government Administration, Chief James Odeniran, who was the acting Chairman of Oyo State Football Association. Our people here love football so much and I felt we must give them a team of their own that would enable them watch grade ‘A’ soccer matches at their home front in Oyo, and by the help of God we gained promotion at every attempt in each season right from  the
