    Fraud: Alleged ‘Money Doubler’ gets N200,000 bail

    An alleged “Money Doubler’’, Femi Oloyede, who defrauded a woman of N650,000 was on Monday in Lagos granted N200,000 bail with two sureties in like sum by an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

    Oloyede, 48, who resides at Agege area, was arraigned before Mr T.O. Shomade on a two-count charge of stealing and obtaining under false pretences for the offence committed on June 12.

    The Prosecutor, Insp. Raji Akeem, had told the court that the accused committed the offences on June 12 at First Bank Plc, Dopemu Agege.

    He alleged that Oloyede conspired with others now at large, to fraudulently obtain N650,000 from the woman on the pretext of giving her double the amount, a representation he knew was false.

    Akeem said that the complainant claimed that she was at a bus stop looking for a cab when the accused and his accomplices offered to give her a lift.

    The prosecutor said that when the complainant entered the car, the accused introduced himself as a Money Doubler and told her to bring N650,000 to get double the amount.

    He said that the complainant who had no idea that they were fraudsters, went to the bank to withdraw N650,000 which she gave to them.

    Akeem said that Oloyede and his accomplices who had no intention of doubling the money for her converted the money to their personal use.

    “When the complainant did not get any feedback from Oloyede, she became worried and decided to give him a call.

    “Sofola said that the accused told her to come and meet him at the bank.

    “The complainant said that when she got to the bank, they told her to withdraw additional money and that was when she discovered that they were fraudsters.

    “Sofola immediately alerted the security guards at the bank about her ordeal and the accused was apprehended while his accomplices escaped,’’ Akeem said.

    He said the offences contravened Section 287 and 314 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 as revised.

    The accused, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 314 prescribes a 15-year jail term for obtaining under false pretences, if found guilty.

    The Magistrate, Mr T.O. Shomade granted the accused bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.

    The magistrate adjourned the case until July 20 for further hearing.

  • Food seller docked for torturing hawker

    A 37-year-old food seller, Dayo Adediran, was on Monday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly torturing one Ayoola Usman, a hawker.

    The accused, residing at Kanu Street in Ntabo Ijoko in Ogun, however, pleaded not guilty to a charge of assault.

    The Prosecutor, Insp. Akeem Raji, told court that the accused committed the offence on May 12 at Oke-Odo Market in Ikeja.

    Raji alleged that Adediran assaulted the hawker, beating him to pulp with a plank of wood.

    He said that Usman sustained an injury in the head while the accused was beating him.

    The prosecutor said that the accused claimed that she bought eggs from the complainant and was supposed to collect N300 change, which Usman failed to give her because he had no change.

    Raji alleged that the complainant said he gave the change to the son of the accused the next day but Adediran claimed that she did not get it.

    The prosecutor said the accused, who was angry about not getting her N300 change, took a plank of wood and started beating the complainant.

    Raji said the complainant reported the case to the police and the accused was arrested for questioning.

    The offence contravenes Section 173 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 173 prescribes a three-year jail term for assault occasioning harm.

    The Magistrate, Mr T.O. Shomade, in his ruling, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50, 000 with one surety in like sum.

    Shomade said that the surety must be gainfully employed and should provide evidence of two-year tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    He adjourned the case until June 19 for further hearing.

  • Court grants unemployed man N200,000 bail over robbery

    A 35-year-old unemployed man, Shafaru Aromire, who allegedly robbed residents in Abule-Egba of their belongings was on Friday granted N200,000 bail by an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

    Aromire, of no fixed address, had pleaded not not-guilty to the charges of conspiracy, assault, robbery and stealing.

    The court also asked the accused to produce two sureties as part of the bail conditions.

    The Magistrate, Mr T.O Shomade, directed that the sureties must be gainfully employed and should show evidence of two years’ tax payment to Lagos State Government.

    According to the Prosecutor, Insp. Akeem Raji, the accused committed the offences on April 21 at Yomi Are Street, Abule-Egba, Lagos.

    He said that the accused and others still at large robbed the residents of their valuables.

    “The accused came with a Lagos commercial Volkswagen bus and with sophisticated weapons to disposes residents of their belongings.

    “He stole four plasma televisions, various mobile phones, jewellery and money from occupants of the said address,” he said.

    Raji said that the accused also assaulted the night guard on the street, Mr Gbadebo Ajewole, with weapons in the cause of the robbery.

    “He inflicted wounds all over the body of Ajewole for trying to prevent them from carrying out their ungodly act.

    According to the prosecutor, the police got a distress call and rushed to the scene.

    “The accused rushed into the bus and drove away when he sighted the police.

    “The police gave them a hot chase; they jumped down from the bus and took to their heels abandoning the vehicle.

    “The accused was arrested, while others escaped; the items initially carted away were recovered from the vehicle,” he said.

    The offences contravened Sections 174, 287, 297 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 297 prescribes life jail term for robbery.

    The magistrate adjourned the case until May 26 for mention.

  • Trader faces theft of friend’s N6m charge

    A 40-year-old trader, Adesina Adefoyekun, who allegedly stole N600,000 being part of the proceeds from the sale of his friend’s van, was on Thursday in Lagos granted N600,000 bail on the orders of an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

    The Magistrate, Mr T.O. Shomade , who gave the ruling, also granted the accused two sureties as part of the bail conditions.

    Shomade said the sureties must be gainfully employed and should show evidence of two years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    The accused pleaded not guilty to a two-count charge of stealing and breach of peace.

    Earlier, the Prosecutor, Insp. Raji Akeem told the court that the accused, who resides at Thomas Salako Street, Ogba in Ikeja, committed the offences sometime in November 2016 at Odunsanmi Street, Ogba.

    Akeem said the complainant, Mr Taiwo Akinwale, had kept his van at the accused’s place before he travelled and told him not to sell it.

    “But by the time the complainant came back, the accused had sold the van and converted the proceeds to personal use.

    “Akinwale, who claimed that his van was worth N1.85 million, demanded the proceeds from Adefoyekun, but he could only produce N1. 25 million.”

     

    He noted that the offenses contravened the provisions of Sections 168 and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. (Revised)

    The case was adjourned until May 22 for mention.

     

  • Security guard docked over car theft

    A 31-year old security guard, Emmaunel Eche, charged with conspiracy and stealing, was on Tuesday arraigned at an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

    Eche, who resides at Oke Ira area of Ogba, Lagos, was said to have stolen a car worth N650, 000, property of Mrs. Lucy Bissong, a resident of the estate where he works as a guard.

    The Prosecutor, Insp. Raji Akeem, told the court that Eche conspired with others now at large to steal the car.

    Akeem said that the offences were committed on Feb. 20, 2017 at Anipupo Street, Oke Ira, Ogba, Lagos.

    According to him, Bissong parked the car outside her compound in the estate at about 6.30 p.m., but woke up next morning to discover that the car had been stolen.

    He said that Eche denied seeing anybody driving out Bissong’s car through the estate gate.

    The prosecutor told the court that Bissong consequently reported the case to the police and Eche was arrested as suspect in the alleged theft.

    He said that the offences contravened Sections 285 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    The Magistrate, Mr. T.O. Shomade, granted bail to the accused in the sum of N700, 000, with two sureties in like sum.

    Shomade ordered that the sureties must be gainfully employed and should show evidence of two year’s tax payment to Lagos State Government.

    He adjourned the case till March 20.
