T2 is partner of Carnival Calabar

T2 has announced a strategic collaboration with Carnival Calabar as the Digital Technology partner, debuting its new customer-focused mobile app, MyT2. This rollout of the app as the official digital companion for Carnival Calabar underscores T2’s ambition to become Nigeria’s most trusted digital lifestyle partner for young people, families, creators, digital-first users, and businesses.

According to T2 CEO, Obafemi Banigbe, the introduction of MyT2 marks a shift toward deeper customer-centric innovation, reflecting the realities of how Nigerians now live and connect.

He noted that people want more than basic connectivity; they want technology that simplifies everyday tasks, strengthens relationships and supports both work and leisure. MyT2, he said, was designed to bring these moments together in a single, intuitive space.

As the app makes its festival debut, Carnival Calabar attendees will enjoy a richer and more organized experience through Festive Mode, a feature built specifically for major cultural celebrations. Festival-goers will have access to real-time schedules, ticket information, curated experiences and vendor listings, enabling them to navigate events more easily and stay connected to the excitement, whether on the ground or following remotely. This marks the first time the festival will be supported by a unified digital guide.

Users can buy, borrow or share airtime and data; manage their spending and communications in one place; and create or join T2 Hives, where families, student groups, work teams or friends can pool and monitor shared resources. The app also integrates the 9SB Wallet, allowing users to send and receive money securely and pay for T2 services, with additional financial features set to roll out as the ecosystem expands. Subscribers can also reserve personalized phone numbers, book appointments for SIM registration or SIM swap to avoid queues, and manage their communication preferences through an enhanced Do Not Disturb (DND) tool.

Banigbe noted that partnering with Carnival Calabar reflects T2’s broader mission of using technology to strengthen cultural expression and community engagement. By serving as the festival’s digital technology partner, T2 aims to ensure a seamless, accessible and engaging experience for millions of Nigerians and global followers.

The debut of MyT2 at Carnival Calabar represents a milestone in T2’s transformation following its transition from 9mobile, with more lifestyle-driven innovations expected as the brand expands its digital-first strategy.

  • T2 rejects misrepresentation

    T2 rejects misrepresentation

Nigeria’s fourth carrier, T2, has rejected misrepresentation of industry facts.

The company, in a statement, said it has observed with concern the recent wave of misinformation circulating online regarding its operational relationships, including those involving IHS.

The company stated that these distortions were sensationalist framings that suggest malicious intent, aiming to sow confusion rather than provide genuine analysis.

“These narratives, driven primarily by pseudo-analysts operating without any credible industry knowledge, grossly misrepresent how telecommunications networks function and deliberately distort the facts for attention and engagement.

“Contrary to the misleading claims being circulated, T2’s network continuity and service delivery are not dependent on IHS tower infrastructure in the manner suggested. These commentators ignore or are entirely unaware of the fundamental mechanics of National Roaming, a framework approved by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), under which operators seamlessly leverage partner networks to ensure full coverage without reliance on their own base stations.

“Claims that T2 faces operational risks or service disruption due to IHS infrastructure issues are technically false, uninformed, and recklessly misleading. The narrative being pushed online creates a false impression of instability, misleading the public and mischaracterizing industry dynamics,” the operator noted.

According to mobile network operator (MNO), it is evident that these distortions go beyond mere misunderstanding. The consistent inaccuracies and sensationalist framing suggest malicious intent, aiming to sow confusion rather than provide genuine analysis.

“Self-proclaimed analysts should be held to a standard of accuracy, yet they’re publishing content without grasping telecom operations, National Roaming, or infrastructure sharing implications.

“T2 rejects these misrepresentations in their entirety. Our operations remain fully stable, fully supported, and entirely aligned with established industry models. The attempt to link T2’s operational integrity to IHS-related narratives is nothing more than manufactured disinformation.

“We urge the public and our stakeholders to disregard these false claims and rely exclusively on official communications from T2 or recognized industry authorities. As a responsible operator, we are committed to maintaining transparency and ensuring that the public receives accurate, technically verified information, free from the noise of uninformed commentary.

“T2 remains committed to its vision of being a leading digital lifestyle partner, delivering world-class connectivity that empowers Nigerians to achieve their ambitions,” the MNO said urging people interested in getting accurate information to contact its official channels.

Akwa Ibom State is setting its sights firmly on the future, as the Governor, Pastor Umo Eno signalled his government’s intention to partner with T2 to accelerate digital technology growth and innovation across the state.

The announcement was made at the opening ceremony of the Ibom Ignite Conference 2025 in Uyo, a youth-focused leadership and entrepreneurship gathering designed to equip participants with tools, networks, and insights to transform ideas into impact.

Governor Eno’s declaration came in response to a keynote delivered by T2 CEO, Obafemi Banigbe, who painted a bold vision of Akwa Ibom as Nigeria’s next digital innovation hub.

“I believe this state has the capacity to lead in building software solutions, Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications, and vibrant startup ecosystems.  Akwa Ibom is not just poised to birth the next big thing like Flutterwave or Paystack – it has the potential to emerge as a genuine digital goldmine for this region,” Banigbe said.

The T2 boss stressed that unlocking this future depends on investment in people and skills. “The future is not built on oil. It is built on education, on human capital, and on digital skills. Participants were also given a platform to showcase ideas and innovations through pitch opportunities, reinforcing the conference’s reputation as a launchpad for future changemakers.

On the sidelines, T2 deepened its customer engagement by hosting a Customer Forum in Uyo. The interactive session provided a direct platform for customers to voice concerns and share feedback with the company’s management. • T2, Huawei strike core network modernisation deal

T2, Huawei strike core network modernisation deal

Nigeria’s fourth mobile network operator (MNO), T2 has signed a strategic partnership with Huawei, a global leader in Information and Communications Technology (ICT), to modernize its core network infrastructure.

This agreement is coming as T2 posted its first gain of the year in July adding 290,601 new subscribers in the month, spurred by its recent infrastructure sharing deal with the largest MNO in the country, MTN Nigeria.

This came as the first monthly subscriber gain in nearly a year for the carrier that had experienced steady decline in its customer base over the years due to obsolete network equipment that took a toll on its service quality.

For July, T2 also emerged as the only operator out of the four MNOs that gained subscribers in a month that saw MTN, Airtel, and Globacom shed weight.

The T2-Huawei infrastructure modernization deal signals the start of a sweeping transformation, one that underscores T2’s renewed ambition to reclaim its position as a leading, innovative force in the industry.

It comes at a pivotal time, as the company transitions to a refreshed corporate and consumer identity, setting the stage for a new era of growth and competitiveness.

The partnership will draw on Huawei’s world-renowned technological expertise to completely overhaul T2’s core infrastructure, enhancing its capacity, resilience, and security. But this initiative goes far beyond a technical upgrade, it is the cornerstone of a multi-phase, company-wide investment strategy aimed at building a future-ready network, designed to meet and exceed the evolving expectations of Nigerian consumers.

During a high-level signing ceremony held in Lagos, senior execs from both companies gathered to mark the beginning of this transformational journey.

Representing T2 were its Chief Executive Officer, Obafemi Banigbe; Chief Operating Officer, John Vasikaran; Chief Technical & Information Officer, Ayodeji Adedeji; Vice President, Corporate Services, Ifeloju Alakija,; and Vice President, Brands and Communication, Seni Ogunkola.

The global original equipment manufacturer, Huawei, was represented by the CEO, Huawei Nigeria Carrier Business, Jiang Junyong.

“This agreement is more than a contract — it’s a catalyst. Huawei has been a trusted partner throughout our journey, and this next chapter reaffirms our shared commitment to innovation, reliability, and excellence. With Huawei by our side, we’re not just upgrading our network, we’re future-proofing it,” Banigbe said.

The core modernization project is part of T2’s four-phase strategic roadmap: Stabilisation, Modernisation, Transformation, and Growth. This structured approach signals a deliberate and focused effort to restore the company’s competitive edge and build a more agile, customer-centric network.

Echoing Banigbe’s vision, Junyong emphasized the strength of the alliance, saying Huawei is proud to support T2’s bold transformation journey.

“This partnership reflects our shared commitment to innovation and excellence. We’re bringing world-class solutions to help T2 build a resilient, high-performance core network that will support next-generation services and long-term growth,” Junyong said.

With this collaboration, T2 is poised to significantly expand its network coverage, capacity, and resilience nationwide. More importantly, it marks the first of several bold initiatives aimed at restoring the company’s market leadership, revitalizing its service portfolio, and delivering a digital experience that truly resonates with modern Nigerian consumers.

The core network modernization is expected to reach completion in the coming months, firmly anchoring T2’s resurgence in a fast-moving, tech-driven future.

During the period under review, active mobile subscriptions dipped to 169.1 million from 171.5 million recorded in June this year.

The decline was driven by the losses recorded by the three MNOs but most significantly by Airtel, which lost 2.4 million subscriptions in the month.

The telco’s active subscriptions plunged to 56.5 million in July from 58.9 million it recorded in June.

MTN also lost 106,345 subscribers in the month, which brought its database to 89.1 million in July, while Globacom’s subscriptions declined by 143,701 to 20.7 million.

MTN remained the dominant player in the market with 52.70per cent of the market share, while maintained the second position with 33.42per cent share.

Globacom’s market share stood at 12.26per cent, while 9mobile’s maintained its distant 4th position despite the gains recorded with 1.61per cent of the market share.

With the decline in actively connected lines recorded by the operators, the country’s teledensity, which measures the number of active telephone connections per 100 inhabitants living within an area, also declined to 78.11per cent in July from 79.22per cent recorded in June.

According to NCC, the teledensity is calculated based on a population estimate of 216 million.

It would be recalled that on July 3rd, 9mobile (as it then was known) and MTN Nigeria officially announced a national roaming deal approved by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). The deal allows customers of 9mobile will be able to access network service anywhere MTN’s network is available across the country.

Prior to the deal, the operator had suffered huge subscriber loss as its network deteriorated due to lack of funds to build infrastructure.

With the national roaming deal, 9mobile subscribers will now be able to make calls, send SMS, and access data through MTN Nigeria’s infrastructure in areas where 9mobile’s network doesn’t exist or is unreliable, enabling the telco’s sustainability.

Instead of building out its own infrastructure, which is capital-intensive, 9mobile can now plug directly into MTN’s far-reaching network.

The deal and that of Huawei will certainly mark a game-changer for T2 as they will allow the MNO to leap toward broader network coverage and digital inclusion across the country.

  • Telecom operators welcome T2

    Telecom operators welcome T2

Telecom operators have welcomed the rebrand of 9mobile to T2, saying it marked a significant milestone in the industry.

The group, acting under the aegis of Association of Licensed Telecom Companies of Nigeria (ALTON) through its Chairman, Engr. Gbega Adebayo, the rebranding of Emerging Markets Telecommunications Services (EMTS) from 9mobile to T2 is good for the industry as it would boost investors’ confidence.

“EMTS is a very important member of ALTON, and we are pleased to see their rebirth as T2. This rebranding enhances investor confidence and underscores the value of collaboration. It assures the public that there are good times ahead for our industry, and we are very excited about what the future holds,” he stated.

Adebayo, who made the remarks over the weekend on the sidelines of the unveiling of Nigeria’s first Digital Museum, an initiative that preserves and showcases the nation’s history and cultural heritage, said the telecom sector has scored yet another milestone.

He commended IHS Towers for spearheading the project, describing it as another clear demonstration of the industry’s commitment to the Nigerian project. He noted that by investing in the preservation of Nigeria’s past while building the infrastructure of the future, IHS has set a remarkable example of corporate citizenship.

Speaking on the state of the telecoms sector, Engr. Adebayo said: “After addressing sustainability concerns earlier in the year, we are now witnessing significant new investments in the sector: the highest we have seen since before the COVID-19 pandemic. Members of ALTON are optimising networks, building new sites to meet rising capacity demands, upgrading existing infrastructure, and migrating more sites from old radio links to high-speed fibre connections.”

He further noted that Tower Companies (TowerCos) are enhancing security across telecom sites to mitigate against vandalism and theft. “Removable batteries and generators are now fitted with trackers to trace stolen items, and we strongly advise the public to desist from buying equipment suspected to have been stolen from telecom sites,” he cautioned.

Adebayo also highlighted ongoing capacity development within the sector: “We are training and retraining our workforce to adapt to emerging technologies. The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has set strict service level requirements, and we are committed to not only meeting but surpassing them. Though network optimisation may occasionally cause service disruptions, we appeal to the public for understanding as these efforts will ultimately deliver a much-improved user experience nationwide.”

On the issues of Right of Way (RoW), Adebayo stressed that investments can only thrive in enabling environments.

“The digital train is moving very fast. States that create hostile conditions for telecom operations risk being left behind. We will not continue to solicit endlessly for cooperation. Where deployment is unwelcome, investments will move to more supportive neighbouring states, and citizens of unfriendly states will inevitably suffer limited connectivity. We urge all state actors to partner with us so that no one is left behind in this rapid transformation,” he said.

On the issue of multiple taxation, Adebayo commended President Bola Tinubu, particularly the Presidential Tax and Fiscal Policy Reform Committee, for its ongoing reforms. He described the reforms as a pivotal step toward streamlining Nigeria’s tax system and eliminating the burden of multiple taxation. He highlighted the positive impact on small and medium-sized businesses, noting that the changes will promote entrepreneurship, attract investment, and foster a more business-friendly environment.

“We eagerly await the commencement of the implementation in January 2026. We are confident that the over 56 taxes and levies currently borne by our members across various jurisdictions will soon become a thing of the past,” he said.

He appreciated all industry stakeholders and reaffirming ALTON’s commitment to the Nigeria project.

“The transformation we are witnessing in our sector has not been experienced in recent years. We thank the leadership of the NCC for their commitment, we congratulate and welcome the new Board under the leadership of Mr. Idris Olorunimbe, and we look forward to even greater milestones ahead.

“The industry is on the march again, and together, with the support of the public in protecting our critical infrastructure, there is no stopping Nigeria’s telecommunications sector as a driver of national economic stability and growth.”

  • How T2 can outsmart competition, by stakeholders

How T2 can outsmart competition, by stakeholders

Stakeholders in the telecom industry including subscribers and industry body have urged the management of 9mobile as it commences its transition to a new corporate and consumer identity, T2.

They say the strategic brand migration marks a pivotal chapter in the company’s business transformation as it marked its third from Etisalat to 9mobile and now, T2 and sets the stage for a renewed competitive presence in Nigeria’s telecoms landscape and a sharper alignment with evolving digital consumer expectations.

The telco which is the fourth entrant into the Nigerian telecoms space, had few weeks ago began the implementation of the roaming agreement by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) with MTN Nigeria.

In a telephone interview yesterday, President, Association of Telecom Companies of Nigeria (ATCON), Tony Emoekpere, hailed the development, adding that since the company is firmly under a new management, there was need for it to reposition itself for competition.

He said for the telco to regain its lost glory, it must do something that will differentiate it from the others. According to him, from what he saw at the official ceremony to announce the brand change, it was obvious that T2 was determined to retake its niche market which is the youth population.

He urged the telco to offer services and products that resonate with the youths which he said constitutes over 60 per cent of the nation’s population, adding that if they get it right, it will be fine.

Subscribers to have urged the telco not to stop at brand change but a total change in their business model. The subscribers, acting under the aegis of Association of Telephone, Cable TV, and Internet Subscribers of Nigeria (ATCIS-Nigeria), welcome the development, insisting that the telecom sector in the country is the proverbial elephant, adding that there were still enough space for T2.

Its President, Hon Sina Bilesanmi, congratulated the board and management of the company for not losing hope on the company.

“We welcome the rebrand of the telco. We see it as part of a broader plan to retake its customers which at a point was over 20million in this country. We also recall that this telco was the darling of the youth demography of this country with presence on major university campuses. While commending the NCC for its regulatory oversight thus far, we want urge it to treat T2 as one of the indigenous operators in the country,” he said.

Bilesanmi also commended the subscribers of the carrier for their patience, adding that what the company owed the customers was improved telecom product and services.

“T2 must wear its thinking cap. It must be innovative in every ramifications. It must personalize its services to customers. It must let the customers know that they too are important. For instance, there is nothing bad if the telco sends birthday and wedding anniversary greetings to its customers. That gesture will make its customers to feel important and appreciated for the money they spend buying airtime for voice calls, text messages and data. The company has a lot of goodwill among the subscribers. I am sure many that left will come back,” Bilesanmi said.

The company said the rebrand is a key milestone within the company’s comprehensive four-phase recovery roadmap—Stabilisation, Modernisation, Transformation, and Growth—launched following the landmark 2023 acquisition of 9mobile by Lighthouse Telecoms, led by business leader and investor, Mr. Thomas Etuh.

Since the takeover, the company has made far reaching changes, including the constitution of a revitalized board, appointment of new executive leadership, and execution of a strategic infrastructure-sharing agreement with MTN Nigeria. This agreement, the first of its kind at scale in the country, has already led to the company significantly expanding its network coverage, capacity, and resilience nationwide.

Now entering the “Transformation” phase, the brand is embracing a new name, T2, and a new ambition: to lead in innovation, customer experience, and digital lifestyle enablement. The T2 identity reflects a forward-thinking, technology-driven, and customer-centric ethos designed to resonate with Nigeria’s increasingly digital and mobile-first population.

Chief Executive Officer of 9mobile, Obafemi Banigbe, said: “This is not just a logo change, it’s a total evolution of who we are, why we exist, and how we deliver value. T2 represents our next chapter. It is a symbol of our renewed commitment to innovation, resilience, and a deepened focus on customer experience. We are building a brand that is ready to thrive in the digital economy.”

Board Chairman, Emerging Markets Telecommunications Ltd, Thomas Etuh, echoed similar sentiments, describing the occasion as one that is significant in many respects for the 9mobile brand, as it represents the start of a new phase of life, a fresh start, rebirth, change or transformation, growth, reawakening, and a new order.

“Today marks a new beginning for the 9mobile business. The march has been tedious. The journey has been exhausting. It was faith and love for country that prompted my foray into the acquisition of the 9mobile business. I knew it was a tough call,” Etuh said, and thanked stakeholders such the NCC and 9mobile customers for standing by the brand through all its trials and challenges, including multiple litigations.

“To our amazing customers, please accept my profound gratitude for believing in us. I know our challenges have impacted you in one way or the other. But there is a resilient spirit we share with you. We are rising together again. Together, with you, we are reclaiming all lost grounds,” Etuh said.

Like ATCIS-Nigeria, the Minister for Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani commended T2 for its bold move and vision to invest in the economy and urged that the rebranding should go beyond a change of name.

“My message to T2 (formerly 9mobile) is simple – let this rebrand be more than a change of colours or new logo, but let it be a renewed commitment to innovation, to service excellence and to the millions of Nigerians whose lives and businesses depend on your network every single day. The Federal Government will continue to work with ecosystem players like T2 who are bold enough to invest, agile enough to adapt and visionary enough to see that the future belongs to those who embrace change before it’s forced upon them,” he said.

Speaking in the same vein, the Secretary to the Lagos State Government, Barr. Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin, who represented Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, affirmed the alignment between T2’s mission and the state’s digital goals.

“T2 has come at the right time. Its focus on digital innovation aligns seamlessly with the Lagos State Government’s vision for a robust digital economy that empowers citizens, businesses, and communities. We welcome partners like T2 who are committed to driving inclusive and transformative growth in our state,” she said.

The transition will be rolled out in deliberate phases, ensuring continuity and seamless service for existing customers while gradually introducing the market to the T2 narrative. At its core, T2 will focus on four key pillars: Speed, Smart Living, Digital Lifestyle, and Trust.

With customer expectations evolving rapidly and technology redefining the rules of engagement, the T2 brand aims to serve as a bridge between connectivity and culture, telecommunications and lifestyle, infrastructure and impact.

As the Nigerian telecoms sector moves into a new decade of transformation, T2 is poised to not just participate, but to lead.

When the 0809ja was launched in Nigeria in 2008, its promoter Emerging Markets Telecommunication Services Ltd (EMTS), trading as Etisalat Nigeria said it was to affirm the Nigerianness of its origin and sphere of influence.

The collapse of negotiations between Etisalat and its consortium of bankers over a $1.2 billion loan it took became an albatross for the telco.

Repeated failures to adhere to agreed repayment schedules caused the banks to initiate take-over procedures, a move which caused the majority stakeholders, Mubadala Development Company of the United Arab Emirates, to withdraw its shareholding. The NCC had objected to the banks’ acquisition moves, claiming that extant laws do not permit telecommunications licenses to be acquired by third parties without the commission’s permission.

It has been argued that the former Etisalat was wrong-footed by the naira’s fall in value relative to the major international currencies, especially when the currency peg which kept it at the artificially high rate of N198 to $1 was scrapped in June 2016. With exchange rates falling to N498 to the dollar in January 2017, the cost of servicing the dollar-denominated portion of the loans definitely rose steeply. It is no coincidence that the company’s troubles began at precisely the time when exchange rates were at their highest.
