Police will collaborate with CJTF to tackle insecurity – CP

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has expressed readiness to collaborate with the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) to address the growing insecurity in the nation’s capital.

This was disclosed by the Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, during an emergency meeting and the unveiling of the CJTF operation office in Abuja.

The Commissioner, represented by Mr. Usman A. Abini, the APO District Police Officer, praised the efforts of the CJTF in filling the gaps left by manpower shortages within the police force.

“The challenges that we’ve always had in terms of manpower and visibility are always bridged by the presence of the CJTF,” Abini said.

He further emphasised the commitment of the police to work closely with the CJTF.

“We are always ready to synergise with you and work with you in the operational field, administration, and any other area that will improve the lives of our citizens,” he added.

The CJTF’s collaboration with the police has been most visible in joint operations in various parts of the FCT, particularly at night, in areas such as the APO division.

According to the Commissioner, these partnerships have been instrumental in boosting security and curbing criminal activities.

“The CJTF is very close to the members of the public, which has been invaluable in our operations,” Abini noted, highlighting the role of the task force in gathering intelligence and engaging with communities.

Speaking at the event, the National Chairman of the Civilian Joint Task Force of Nigeria (CJTFN), Prof. Muhammed Kailami, emphasised the importance of national unity and security.

“Nigeria’s unity is a task that must be done, and that is what we are after,” he said.

Kailami described the CJTF’s work as a sacrifice, noting that members are unpaid volunteers working with both the police and the army to ensure safety.

He expressed hope that the government would formalise the CJTF’s role in the future by providing salaries and equipment.

  • Ondo Poly pensioners urge Akeredolu to tackle insecurity

Retired workers of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic (RUGIPO) in Owo, Ondo State, have expressed misgivings about the abduction of their colleagues by gunmen.

They urged Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu to find a lasting solution to the menace, which they said have hindered the peace of the state.

A statement by the former workers’ Secretary Tunde Ayegbusi and Public Relations Officer (PRO) Phillip Oyegoke noted that barely a week after a polytechnic worker was abducted and killed, another RUGIPO senior lecturer was seized by some hoodlums.

They described the situation as worrisome.

But former polytechnic workers said the incident was not targeted at only the institution.

The statement reads: “The situation at RUGIPO was not targeted at the institution alone but a national problem; it is left for Ondo State to tackle the problem headlong.

“We members of this association are solidly behind the management of the institution; we have jointly worked assiduously to bring the institution to this enviable height. We do not want bad elements to destroy it.

“As retired workers, our lives depend on the gratuity and pensions we receive from the institution from time to time. Many of our children and relations are beneficiaries of the citadel of learning.

They condoled with the polytechnic community on the death of Akinyemi Taiwo and felicitated with the family of Mr and Mrs Olopete, who were released from kidnappers’ den.

  • How judiciary can help tackle insecurity, by Osinbajo

•’Why Nigeria has not signed free trade agreement’

THE judiciary can help tackle insecurity by ensuring that perpetrators of crimes are swiftly brought to justice, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo (SAN) has said.

He noted that the lawyers and the judiciary have been blamed for delaying criminal justice administration.

Osinbajo was reacting to a call by the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) President Abubakar Mahmoud (SAN) on President Muhammadu Buhari to deploy his full constitutional powers to end killings.

They spoke at the opening of the 12th Annual Business Law Conference of the NBA Section on Business Law (NBA-SBL) in Abuja.

The theme of the three-day event, which began on Wednesday, is: “Bringing down the barriers: The law as a vehicle for intra-African trade.”

Bemoaning increasing killings, especially in Plateau State, Mahmoud urged the Federal Government to bring the perpetrators to book.

He said: “It is not enough for the President to pay a visit to the affected communities. The President must use all constitutional powers at his disposal to bring these killings to an end.

“More importantly, we must ensure that the perpetrators and their sponsors are arrested and properly brought to justice.

“Unless that is achieved, democracy and its promise of prosperity for our people will be completely empty and meaningless,” Mahmoud said.

But, Osinbajo said fighting insecurity requires a joint effort, including the support of lawyers and the judiciary, in ensuring that justice is quickly meted out to those brought to trial.

“As professional elite, it is important for us to continue to support ways by which we can ensure that our security framework and our system of administration of justice are able to deliver.

“One of the charges that is laid at our doorstep frequently is the fact that our administration of justice system, which involves ourselves as a profession and the judiciary, are far too slow in holding people to account for anything – whether it is petty offences or corruption or even some of the security issues that we face.

“I think that one of the critical ways that we can contribute to making our society safer and better is by ensuring that our profession delivers in the promises we made to our people, one of which is that we will ensure swift justice,” he said.

On the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement, around which discussions in the conference centre, the Vice President said Nigeria has not signed it because consultations were still ongoing.

The AfCFTA is a trade agreement between 44 African Union member states with the goal of creating a single market followed by free movement and a single currency union.

Osinbajo said there are concerns that the country could become a dumping ground with its signing, adding that Nigeria was more interested in free movement of goods made in Africa.

He said: “Due to the prevalence of dumping on the continent and the potential for its escalation, one may argue that free trade in Africa may not necessarily be fair.

“Our vision for intra-Africa trade is for free movement of made-in-Africa goods – goods made by Africans using a significant proportion of African raw materials; not just free movement of goods.”

The AfCFTA was signed in Kigali, Rwanda on March 21. Signing the Agreement does not yet establish the African Continental Free Trade Area. It will function as an umbrella to which protocols and annexes will be added.

Once all documents are concluded and ratified by 22 states, the free trade area will formally exist.

Negotiations will continue this year with Phase II, including Competition Policy, Investment and Intellectual Property Rights. A draft shall be submitted for the January 2020 AU Assembly.

Kenya and Ghana were the first countries to deposit the ratification instruments on May 10 after ratification through their parliaments.

  • Bamidele: Oni, others won’t sabotage APC’s victory

The Director General of the Kayode Fayemi Campaign Organisation, Hon. Opeyemi Bamidele, has said the All Progressives Congress (APC) entertains no fear about the victory of its candidate in the July 14 governorship poll, Dr. Kayode Fayemi.

Bamidele said he has implicit confidence in the leadership of the party in Ekiti State, including former Governor Segun Oni and his group working for Fayemi to make the victory a resounding and collective one.

The Director General made the remarks yesterday in a statement from his Media Aide, Ahmed Salami in Ado Ekiti.

Recently, Oni was linked to a litigation purportedly filed in Abuja seeking the nullification of Fayemi’s victory in the party’s primary on account of his failure to resign as a minister in line with the party’s constitution and guidelines.

Commenting on the event that has been causing ripples in the APC, Bamidele said he has no reason to doubt Oni and his commitment to Fayemi’s victory in this election.

Bamidele said: “We are not ruling out the possibility of people having some ill-feelings about certain issues in our party, but that should not degenerate to the level where people can act as fifth columnists in their own party.”

  • Tackle insecurity, Odedeji urges FG

The Bishop of Lagos West Diocese Anglican Communion, Rt Rev James Odedeji, has called for complete overhaul of the nation’s security apparatuses to tackle the worrisome surge in criminalities.

Delivering his presidential speech at the 1st session of the 7th synod of the church, Odedeji said it has become apparent the security agencies were in dire needs of fresh leaderships and brains.

He also appealed to the federal government to support State Policing for effective collection of intelligence and security among communities across the nation.

Odedeji said: “The truth must be told that our government is not doing enough to ensure security of lives and property which our leaders swore to protect.

“A lot of fund is being yearly appropriated on defense, yet, security issues continue unabated.

“The Federal Government spokesman continues to assuret he nation that the Boko Haram insurgents had been decimated, however, recent events are proving to the contrary.

“The members of the sect not only engage on soft target bombing but also invade villages, killing and maiming people and destroying their properties.

“Government must consider an immediate overhaul of the current security architecture, to inject new officers into the headship of the Military and Police leadership.

“We therefore lend our voice to those that had been calling for State Police, to enhance intelligence gathering and proper policing of communities.”

He informed of giant strides in the Diocese in the last one years, noting that several archdeaconries have commissioned new buildings and churches have been established, leading to massive expansion of Kingdom works.

He pointed out not less than 10 new churches were named with many more conducting foundation laying ceremonies.

He also reported the Cathedral and the Christian Mothers’ leadership floated scholarship schemes to help indigent students.

No fewer than 45 students across higher institutions have benefitted from the scheme, Odedeji stated.

On the theme of the synod, my help comes from the Lord, Odedeji urged Nigerians not to rely on the hill of money, position, connection, knowledge and achievements but only on God.

  • Deploy technology to tackle insecurity, urge firms

Indigenous technology firm, Computer Warehouse Group Plc (CWG) and Chinese telecoms equipment vendor, Huawei, have said the deployment of advanced information communication technology (ICT) tools will address the security challenges confronting the country and the Africa.

The firms said tools, such as surveillance internet protocol (IP), could help end the era of impunity by criminals who are unleashing terror on innocent people.

They spoke during a special breakfast meeting on IP surveillance in Lagos. It has as theme: Detect and curb physical security threat in your environment.

Huawei Enterprise Solution Manager, Mr. Joseph Olayemi, said IP surveillance tool is an Intelligence Video Surveillance (IVS) surveillance solution that is digitised and networked, adding that it is the networked version of well-known closed-circuit television (CCTV).

He said the video surveillance systems have undergone significant changes, shifting from the earliest analogue surveillance to digital surveillance, which was prominent in the past few years, to the burgeoning IP video surveillance.

According to him, there has been a shift from the use of CCTV systems to the IP surveillance globally owing to its greater efficiency. He added that coupled with its coverage advancements, IP system allows for remote viewing and control, sharing images and footages with security officials and ease of communication through the internet for security alerts, improved search capability, greater ease of use, better quality images and the possibilities of recording, playing-back and storing video clips for future usages.

He argued that the tool may further be integrated into Nigeria’s and Africa’s peculiar environment and better exploited for the safety of personal and corporate assets.

He cited the success the tool has recorded with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) mega-stations, insisting that the IP surveillance solution can reduce vandalism and construction and maintenance costs of similar systems across the country.

He observed that the pilot city-wide installation project in Bayelsa State has shown that the IP surveillance solution can be used to monitor terrorists.

Associate Vice President, CWG Plc, Mr. Adedayo Abegunde, said the forum was orgnaised to bring the IP surveillance technology to the fore as an answer to the challenge of insecurity in the nation.

Olayemi said the IP surveillance package comes with low bandwidth consumption, the possibility of accessing its data from anywhere, larger storage capacity, better video resolutions, wider perimeter coverage, capturing of fast moving objects and intelligent analysis capacity.

The Assistant General Manager, DCC Networks, Mr. Gbenga Odegbami said CWG has the required capacity to install and maintain all categories of end-to-end IP Surveillance solution. He added that the firm operates a global quality standard that is driven by trained professionals and procedures that would tailor the solution to suit the needs and specifications of prospective customers at the minimum total cost of ownership.

  • ‘Ubah will tackle insecurity’

    ‘Ubah will tackle insecurity’

Prince Emeka Eze is the running mate to the Labour Party (LP) governorship candidate in the November 16 Anambra State governorship election, Dr. Infeanyi Ubah. He spoke with EMMANUEL OLADESU on the party’s preparation for the poll.

What are the issues that will shape the governorship election?

Well, in this race, there are four major political parties on the field. We have the Labour Party (LP), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), All Progressives Congress (APC), and the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA). In all these platforms, Dr. Parick Ifeanyi Ubah and my humble self are on the platform of the Labour Party. Prior to this time, I was in the PDP. But the reason why I have not continued with the PDP is because we need to make a change in Anambra State. And the time has come for us to create a breaking point where we turn the virtues of Anambra State to become positive, so that the people of the state would benefit from governance. At this point, Anambrarians look upon the government as thieves and as people who are not tactful. And definitely, the only political party that can deliver, based on positive and veritable party manifesto, is the Labour Party. And as you can see, other political parties are falling apart; they are in shambles. There is intense altercation, internal wrangling, court processes, which are unending. You cannot build Anambra State from a position of war, altercation, and indefinite court processes. Anambra State can only be built from a position of peace and tranquility. That is what Labour Party brings to the table. And that is why we are there to make a change.

What is the prospect of the Labour Party at the poll ?

It speaks for itself. First and foremost, the grace of God is heavily over the ticket of Dr. Patrick Ifeanyi Ubah. The hand of God has manifested all over by making sure that the path to victory is clear. While other political parties are tearing themselves apart, we are touching the lives of Anambrarians. We are touching the lives of voters. We are doing so many things for them and they are appreciating it. And there is, no doubt, that we have been on the field campaigning for a very long time. And there’s no other way you can send your message to the people, apart from campaigning. When you are in the court fighting and abusing one another on the pages of newspapers, the type of message you send to the voters is that you are not ready for the election. But we have sent our manifesto, the things we want to do for Anambra State, to the voters. How we want to alleviate poverty and how we want to develop Anambra State. These are the virtues going positively for us. And those virtues are keeping us in the lead and we will continue to maintain that lead till the election day.

The major problems affecting Anambra are unemployment and insecurity. How do you intend to slove them, if elected?

The first thing we want to do in Anambra State is to create comfort. And for us to create comfort, there are three entities in creating comfort. The first is to provide security and to make sure that the life of our people and their property, their wealth, are safe. The second is to create jobs. That is why we are going to embark on industrial revolution. The third is to make sure that there is sufficient food for Anambrarians to keep them well and healthy. The first thing in our eight-point agenda is combating insecurity. And we want to do that in a way that would create positive gains. We have heard other candidates talk about how they are going to fight crime. But to tell you the honest truth, it will not work.

All it will do is to amplify insecurity in Anambra State. But the innovative techniques we are going to bring on board will douse the psychological tension of insecurity and clear all the insecurity parameters in Anambra State. We have a two methods of challenging it. We have the human coefficient and the structural coefficient. In the human coefficient, we want to train security agencies and the training would be continuous, so that they would be abreast. They would have the knowledge of new technologies and techniques in combating crime. And we are going to do that within Anambra State, even if it means brining experts and people who are versed in impacting training on special weapons and tactics and rapid response techniques. Second, we are going to review in Anambra State the salary scale of the security agencies because Anambra has been tagged as one of the high crime zones or flash points in the country. And you cannot expect a policeman working in a flash point to be earning the same emolument as the other working in a quiet sector. So, we are going to add something to the police package to encourage them and let them know they have come here for an assignment. In our team of rapid response policemen are policemen specially trained in special weapon and anti-crime tactics. These people are going to combat crime at any time of the day and at any place in Anambra State.

They are going to be on the road 24 hours searching for crime, seeking for criminals and being equipped to flush them out. We are also going to give them a special package for that round the clock duty that they are going to be doing. Now, we are also going to introduce an incentive package, which will come in quarterly and at times, half yearly for police officers that have shown remarkable performance and professionalism in fighting. So, we will have that gift or that incentive package, which would be detailed for a group of police officers or officer or security agent that has excelled above others. This will endear other security agents to try and also become exemplary and to perform in a professional manner so that they can have a chance of winning that incentive package. Apart from that, we are going to develop community policing whereby, in every square metre of any community, we will have a minimum of two community policing agents, who are civilians living within the community that have been trained on how to detect crime and how to inform security agencies to come and assist to apprehend criminals. So, they would live among our people, but they would be trained intensely on how to dig out criminal tendencies living within the community.

What are other measures, especially medical insurance?

We are going to introduce a special medical insurance package that takes care of the health of security agents and their families. Before now, be equipped and manned by trained personnel, who will have the eye of detecting crime and also narrowing, if a security man gets shut in the field, he has to take care of himself. So, it has created a withdrawal effect that, once police and security agents are in the field and they hear a gun shut from a criminal or an armed robber, they tend to run away because nobody wants to take a bullet knowing that you are going to run the cost of treating yourself. So, that medical insurance package will ensure that security agents, who have been traumatised in the line of duty, will get treated free of charge as well as taking care of their families. So, they don’t have anything to worry regarding the health and welfare of their dependants. So, these are the things we are going to do to create encouragement and create sufficient enabling factor for these security agents to bring out themselves to secure Anambra State. On the structural component, we are going to introduce vehicular instruments-pickup trucks, bullet proof cars and armoured personnel carrier to fight crime. We are going to ensure that any police or security agent in the field has full protection by wearing a low sarvica helmet and body armour. This will reduce the trauma incidence of security agents who have gone out to the field to fight crime.

Other things we are going to do is that we are going to provide them with every accessory for fighting crime, which will include special weapons, special crime detection equipment, infra red equipment for fighting crime in the night, and high beam long distance searchlight. We are also going to have two special helicopters that would be patrolling the area view of Anambra State to monitor criminal tendencies and suspicious movements from the air. Most importantly, we are going to institute a forensic laboratory, which will be the first of its kind to carter for the whole of the southeast and southsouth. The forensic laboratory would be equipped and manned by trained personnel who will have the eye of detecting crime and also narrowing down the cost of some sort of crimes. Finally, we are going to use innovative, modern telecommunication equipment. The telecommunication equipment is a phone.

The phone is going to be a wonder phone, which would do every single thing your normal mobile phone would do-make calls, send out text, receive all sorts of messages, but it will have a dedicated security button. What we call the alert button, which, if you are in a situation where you feel that you are being harassed or there is an intending attack on yourself, you press the alert button or the security switch. That switch would send out alert signal to every security agents in that sector. And it will not only send out that signal that somebody is under red alert, but it would instruct every security agent to move towards the area that that alert button was ignited.

  • Bola Ige’s daughter urges Fed Govt to tackle insecurity

The daughter of the slain former Attorney General of the Federation, Justice Bola Ige (SAN), Mrs. Funso Adegbola, has urged the Federal Government to tackle insecurity.

Her father was killed by gunmen in his Bodija, Ibadan, home on December 23, 2001. His killers are yet to be apprehended.

Mrs. Adegbola spoke at the weekend at her school, the Vale College in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, during the final selection of winners for the 10th annual scholarship award in memory of her mother, the late Justice Atinuke Ige.

She described the declaration of a state of emergency in three northern states as a temporary measure and urged the government to find lasting solutions to insecurity in Nigeria.

Mrs. Adegbola said: “Rather than paying lip service to the security challenges, the government should tackle the root causes of the problem.

“As the chief security officer, the government has the responsibility of protecting the life and property of its citizens. It should take this seriously.

“Youth restiveness, unemployment, poverty, imbalance in social class and corruption, among others, are among the major causes of insecurity. Until the government bridges the gap between the poor and the rich in this country, we may not experience peace.

“Citizens also have a role to play by bringing up our children in the way of the Lord, so that in the future, they will be responsible people and not terrorists.”

She said the government can solve security challenges through the use of modern technology, adequate remuneration and training of security operatives.

Mrs. Adegbola said her mother sponsored the education of many children during her lifetime, adding that the annual scholarship award was to keep her memory alive.

She said 89 pupils from 15 public secondary schools in Ibadan participated in the competition and 10 were shortlisted.

The scholarship is worth N1 million a year for the ‘A’ Level programme at Vale College. It covers tuition, accommodation, books and uniforms.

Any pupil that gets all ‘As’ in the ‘A’ Level examination would be sponsored to any government university.

After the oral competition, three students were awarded scholarships at Vale College.

They are: Ogunleye David from Alayande School of Science, Adeyanju Ololade from Wesley College of Science and Shuaibu Paul from Command Secondary School.

  • ASUU boss berates Fed Govt for failing to tackle insecurity

The Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Ibadan (UI) chapter, Dr. Olusegun Ajiboye, has berated the Federal Government for failing to tackle insecurity.

Ajiboye, who challenged the government to tackle insecurity, poverty, hunger and youth unemployment, urged President Goodluck Jonathan to forget the centenary celebration.

He spoke during a private radio station programme, tagged: Voices.

Dr. Ajiboye described the celebration as unnecessary, saying it was another avenue by public officials to loot public treasury.

The ASUU boss said it was senseless for the government to set up committees for the centenary celebration when many Nigerians were mourning over the Boko Haram insurgency.

He faulted Prof Tekena Tamuna’s call for the change of Nigeria’s name to Commonwealth of Nigeria, saying it was diversionary and uncalled for.

Said Ajiboye: ”The nation is facing fundamental challenges that require urgent attention by the government. Nigerians are living under excruciating conditions and many are killed daily due to the Boko Haram insurgency.

“This is not the time to be making frivolous calls for a needless change of name.”
