Law-abiding herdsmen, others welcome in Ogun – State govt

Ogun State government said on Wednesday all Nigerians, including herdsmen, are free to enter the state provided they are law -abiding.

The government also directed local government areas where there are herdsmen and farmers crises to embark on enumeration of residents and visitors to know the people in the area.

The Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Taiwo Adeoluwa,  stated these during chat with journalists  after the States’ Security Council meeting held at the Governor’s Office, Oke – Mosan, Abeokuta.

He also warned that the government would not hesitate to invoke the recently passed anti – land-grabbing law to curtail the menace of herdsmen in the state.

According to the SSG, the state government would strengthen its conflict resolution committee established in 2012 to make it achieve more success.

He said the government and security agencies would take a closer look at the activities of the trans-border pasturialists who were responsible for most of the attacks in the state.

“All Nigerians would be welcome in Ogun State but there are laws and rules that every stakeholder, every visitor, every herdsman and every farmer must comply with.

“The one that is very key in the packs of local laws is what we call the land grabber law but the correct title is Prohibition of Forcible Occupation of Land and other Properties Law.

“The council also took note that this law already provides for most of the contemporary challenges that confronts us today as far as herdsmen, settlers and farmers are concerned.

“Council reaffirmed government determination to continue to fully implement this law which already prohibits forcible entry on lands.

“Council decided that for us in Ogun State, we want everybody from all parts of the country and even outside but we will continue to insist that our laws be respected and obeyed.

“Our existing conflict resolution committee is a standing committee that has been put in place since 2012 when the crisis first arose and we have decided to further strengthen the committee.”

MAPOLY upgrade: Amosun allays fears of students

Gov. Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun says the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic ( MAPOLY ), Abeokuta, will continue to run its normal academic programmes in  the next four years.

Amosun also dismissed insinuations that the institution had gone into extinction following its upgrade to a university.

He made the clarification when he spoke to protesting students under the aegis of National Association of Nigeria Students ( NANS ), Ogun chapter, at the Oke-Mosan Governor’s Office in Abeokuta.

The state government recently upgraded MAPOLY to Moshood Abiola University of Science and Technology ( MAUSTECH ).

It also created Ogun State Polytechnic to be located at Ipokia area of the state.

Placard carrying students marched from Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation ( NNPC ) on Abiola Way to the Governor’s Office in protest.

The demonstration was christened “Rescue Ogun State Education Campaign.”

Some of the placards had inscriptions which read: “Save Ogun State Education”, “Education must survive” and “Mapoly must survive.”

Amosun also said he would discuss with the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic ( ASUP ) on the problems in the institution.

He explained that students running various programmes at different levels would complete their studies and would not be taken to Ipokia.

Amosun, however, said that there would not be automatic appointment for the aggrieved lecturers in both the university and the new polytechnic.

“I am not happy because this is my school. What is happening today is because those that have been given the privilege to serve us are not serving well.

“Everybody here will finish their courses; it will take four years before MAPOLY will go into extinction.

“You are not going to Ipokia. If the lecturers don’t want that, we will sort them out.

“We will seek for new lecturers for the university and the new polytechnic.

“Mapoly lecturers are not comfortable with it. I said the appointment they have is for MAPOLY, for the new university, they will have to reapply.

“If they are qualified, they can take them. I will ask the commissioner to meet them again,’’ he said.

On the delayed examination, the governor stressed that the lecturers should explain why they decided to hold the students to ransom.

He argued that the reason should not be because the state government created a new school.

“We are only admitting ND1, if you have carryover, you are going to Ipokia. I told them (management), don’t admit new students to MAPOLY,” he said.

He added that education would be free at the primary and secondary schools, adding that government would need to subsidise tertiary education.

The governor said the state government was working hard to improve the standard and quality of education in the state.

Earlier, Olawale Balogun, the NANS Chairman in Ogun, explained that the students were not happy with the standard of education in the state.

Balogun urged the government to address the issue as a matter of urgency.

He specifically mentioned the delay in the commencement of   examination at MAPOLY, saying the action would affect the career of the students.

Balogun also decried the cancellation of the payment of Senior School Certificate Examination fee and the hike in the acceptance fee of Olabisi Onabanjo University ( OOU ), Ago-Iwoye.

Meanwhile, the Rector of the school, Prof. Oladele Itiola, has proceeded on his terminal leave.

The Secretary to the State Government, Mr Taiwo Adeoluwa, announced the appointment of  Mr Ayodeji Salimon  as the Acting Rector of the school.

Family petitions Amosun over land grabbing

The family of Owuyo Elemuren has petitioned the Ogun State Government over an alleged forceful eviction from the land by Mr. Kamorudeen Lamina, popularly known as Sir K. Oluwo.

In the petition addressed to the head of the Ogun State Special Task Force on Anti-Land Grabbing, Taiwo Adeoluwa, copied to Governor Ibikunle Amosun, the family is seeking the enforcement of the provisions of the anti-land grabbing law signed by the governor last year, by ensuring that Mr. Lamina, his agents and or representatives vacate the land forthwith.

Public Relations Officer of the family, Lanre Anjolaiya in a press release said the Owuyo Elemuren family from time immemorial according to the Native Law and Customs are the owners of the large expanse of land at Igbosoro Elemuren village, Ogijo, Ogun State, The petitioners, Prince Nurudeen Adeyeri, Prince Kehinde Ojulari and Alhaji Segun Alogba, claimed that Mr. Lamina and his agents were spotted on the family land sometime in 2012, and claimed to have been assigned 60 acres of land from some unauthorized members of the family.

He was alleged to have been invited to a meeting with the Executive Committee of the family. At the meeting, documents were shown to prove that those he purportedly got the land from had no stake or authority to assign family land.

“They are the youth of the family, who had since 2006 been assigned two acres of land with an undertaken never to foment any trouble on family land. They have since sold the two acres assigned to them by the family.

“Mr. Lamina reportedly confessed to the elders at the meeting that he was invited by the youth to provide security protection for them, and ensure that the elders are driven out of the land. As a compensation for the illegal security assignment, he was assigned 60 acres.

“However, the Executive Committee members at the meeting were alarmed when Mr. Lamina showed the agreement purportedly signed by the youth with him. In the said agreement, Mr. Lamina claimed to have paid N30 million for the 60 acres.

“He was unable to present Family Deed of Assignment or Conveyance and therefore told to vacate the family land. Rather than take heed, he moved into the land to forcefully take possession. This led elders of the family, including the Baale of the village, Baale Adegboyega Lawrence Adeyeri, to flee the village since 2012.

“The family is poised to take full advantage of the new law against land grabbing in the state. As the Baale also prepares to return to his domain, the family prays government’s urgent intervention, keeping in mind the violent nature and antics of land grabbers; who in their desperate bids to grab other people’s land would unleash mayhem on the land and thereafter cause fictitious petitions to be written to the Police or government agencies,” the petitioners stated in the press release.
