He pointed out that apart from the group life insurance for officers, the IG took it upon himself to create special welfare fund known as IGP Welfare Fund to boost the package.
Lakanu noted that the essence of the gesture was not the money but the idea behind it which is to let the families know that they are not forgotten.
He said: “This package is just one of the things the IGP in his wisdom planned for widows and children of the late officers.”
He condoled with the beneficiaries and assured them of continued support of the force.

Taiwo Lakanu proves mettle
The strongest man is he who stands most alone. And in the case of Taiwo Lakanu, Ibsen’s word rings true. At a time his fellow officers are losing credibility, sacrificing their integrity on the altar of mouth-watering inducements, the Imo State Commissioner of Police stands apart as a class act unmoved by the corrupting influence of high office.
An incurable hater of corruption and its sister vices, Lakanu, who is also the Akogun of Lagos State, has proved his mettle through the victorious wars he waged on crime in all the places he has been deployed as an officer of the Nigerian Police. A hard-boiled cop with uncommon passion and courage, the Onwa Na Etiri Oha (the moon that shines) of Imo State has been described by Governor Rochas Okorocha as the long-awaited divine messenger sent by providence to rid the state of criminals.
Wherever he finds himself, Lakanu has done his best to restore the battered image of the police force to its former glory. From the time he enlisted as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) in the Nigeria Police Force in 1986, he has risen through the ranks, holding positions in operations, investigation and administration until his relentless dedication to duty landed him the position of Ekiti State Commissioner of Police and Commissioner in charge of Airport Command before his recent deployment to Imo State.
A graduate of Philosophy and Law who was called to the bar in 2000, CP Lakanu was recently recognised for his stellar record in crime fighting at an award ceremony hosted by Security Watch Africa. At the ceremony in Houston, Texas, USA, Lakanu was named Most Outstanding Crime Fighter in West and Sub-Sahara Africa. Such recognition could only bolster his resolve to give his all.
