  • Herbalist docked for defrauding man of 4.5m

    A Herbalist, Olaifa Ajayi, 34, who police accused of allegedly swindling one Olufemi Olusoga, of N4.5million to offer special prayer for“ restoration of glory”,  on Monday appeared in a Tinubu Chief Magistrates’ Court.
    Ajayi, who lives in Abiola Estate, Jakande Lagos is charged with three counts of conspiracy, fraud and theft.
    The prosecutor, Sgt. Hafsat Ajibode told the court that the accused committed the offence on Oct. 31, at 11 a.m. at No. 50 Ogombo Road, Sangotedo Lagos.
    She said that the accused, a herbalist with intent to defraud, obtained 4.5 million from his customer, Olusoga, with a promise to offer spiritual prayer for the “restoration of his lost glory”.
    Ajibode said that the accused took  Olusoga, a project manager, to one Ifatunde (surname unknown) who demanded for  4.5 million to prepare him for special prayers.

    She said that after collecting the money, the accused and his accomplice absconded and stopped picking the complainant’s  calls.
    Ajibode said that the accused was later apprehended in Osogbo, Osun.
    The offence, she said, contravened the provisions of sSections 287, 314 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that if convicted, he liable to three years imprisonment.
    The accused, however pleaded not guilty to the offence.
    The Chief Magistrate, Mr Tajudeen Elias, admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.
    Elias ordered that one of the sureties must be a relation of the accused and the other a community leader.
    He adjourned further hearing in the case until December 20.
  • Ex-baker docked for stealing 135 loaves of bread

    A baker, Chima Okoro, who allegedly broke into the bakery he worked in and stole 135 loaves of bread and N80,000 on Wednesday appeared in a Tinubu Chief Magistrates’ Court.
    The police, charged the accused who resides at No. 4, Otua Street, Ijora 7up, Lagos on two counts of theft, breaking and entry .
    The prosecutor, Sgt Hafsat Ajibode told the court that the accused committed the offence on Nov. 7, at 2 a.m. at Kilometre 45 Lekki/Epe Expressway,  Sangotedo Lagos.
    She said that the accused, an ex employee  of Daily Mama Bread Industry broke into the bakery and stole 135 loaves of bread worth  N30,000; and also stole N80,000 all valued at N110,000.
    The prosecutor told the court that Okoro, who was laid off after a shortage of N80,000 was discovered in his sales proceed, absconded.

    “He later came back, broke into the bakery and stole 135 loaves of bread of different size from the bakery and was caught by a security guard,” she said.
    The offence, she said contravened the provisions of Sections 287 and 309 (1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
    If convicted under Section 287, the accused is liable to three years imprisonment while Section 309 (1) prescribes seven years imprisonment for anyone found guilty.
    After the charges were read to him, Okoro, pleaded not guilty.
    The Chief Magistrate, Mr Tajudeen Elias, admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N100,000 with one surety  in like sum.
    Elias ordered that the surety must be a responsible citizen and gainfully employed.
    He  adjourned the case until Nov. 27 for mention.

    ‘Mentally-challenged’ man arraigned over attempt to steal child

    A 48-year-old, Lawal Amosu, who is believed to be mentally challenged, was on Monday docked at an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for allegedly attempting to steal a child.

    The accused, whose address is unknown, was arraigned on a charge of attempting to steal a child.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the accused who kept muttering inaudible words and displaying signs of mental illness, did not respond when asked if he was guilty or not to the charge preferred against him.

    Chief Magistrate Tajudeen Elias ordered that the accused should be taken to a psychiatric home for examination.

    Earlier, Sgt. Kehinde Omisakin, the prosecutor, said the accused had attempted to steal a child on July 15 at 1.20 p.m. at Onilegogoro in Mushin.

    She said the accused, who allegedly belonged to a kidnap syndicate, was caught while trying to steal a child in the ever-busy Mushin.

    The offence contravened Section 406 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The accused was admitted to a bail of N200,000 with one surety in like sum, who must show evidence of tax payment and the Lagos State Residents Registration Agency (LASRRA) documents.

    The case has been adjourned until Sept. 19 for mention.

    Court remands woman, 11 others over Ikeja kidnappers’ den

    Twelve suspected kidnappers including a woman, arrested by the police in connection with a kidnappers’ den at Ile-Zik Bus Stop in Ikeja, were on Friday remanded at Ikoyi Prisons on the orders of a Lagos magistrate.

    Chief Magistrate Tajudeen Elias said the accused are to remain behind bars pending a legal advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPPs).

    The “Ile Zik 12 men” were brought before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court on a three-count charge of conspiracy, attempted kidnap and possession of arms and ammunition.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the bus stop is named after a four-storey building built by the first President of Nigeria, the late Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe.

    Barely a week before, another kidnappers’ hole was discovered at Ijaiye area on the Oshodi-Sango-Abeokuta Highway.

    The accused are Hakeem Ogundele, 32; Noah Samuel, 25; Ayomide Olatunji, 44; Felix Matthew, 34; American Obodoyibo, 42; Shola Elemo, 32; and Adijat Mudashiru, 32.

    Others are Tunde Akanji, 41; Adeoye Adekeye, 38; Patrick Onwubufor, 65, Samuel Iyede, 50; and Bright Amankwa, 36.

    Earlier, Sgt. Kehinde Omisakin, the police prosecutor, told the court that the accused committed the offences on Aug. 10 between 10.00 a.m. and 4.00 p.m. at Ile-Zik Bus Stop near Ajayi Farm in Ikeja on the Oshodi-Sango-Abeokuta Expressway. According to her, the 12 accused had conspired to kidnap some students of a nearby Girls Junior High School, but they luckily escaped.

    “Some school uniforms and notebooks of the students were found in possession of the accused.”

    Omisakin said one live ammunition, nine empty shells of expended ammunition, one kitchen knife and road maps were recovered from them.

    The accused pleaded innocence of the offences which contravened Sections 22, 330 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    NAN also reports that kidnapping and other related offences carry life imprisonment or capital punishment.

    The case has been adjourned until Aug. 22.
