House of Representatives Speaker Aminu Waziri Tambuwal has urged Nigerians to promote the tenets of democracy, good governance and responsible citizenry.

In a statement to mark the Independence Day anniversary issued in Abuja by his Special Adviser on Media and Public Affairs, Malam Imam Imam, Tambuwal appealed to the political elite to moderate their utterances and be mindful of their responsibility to the country.

He said with elections scheduled for early next year, leaders must avoid acts that heat up the polity.

According to him, what is of paramount importance now is for political office holders to approach the poll with the intentions to play by the rules.

The Speaker reiterated his earlier calls that the people must isolate and expose obstacles that hamper the attainment of peace, development and progress.

Congratulating Nigerians on the 54th Independence Anniversary, Tambuwal restated the commitment of the House of Representatives to uphold the ideals of a united Nigeria, which he said shall take its rightful place in the comity of nations.

  • Tambuwal assures Medical College of better funding

The Speaker, House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, Tambuwal, has assured that the National Assembly would make provision for more funding for the National PostGraduate Medical College of Nigeria in future budgets.

He was responding to a plea for improved funding made by the President Prof Rasheed Ajani Arogundade, for the 35-year-old institution to further meet up with her mandate.

Said Tambuwal: “Let me assure you that we are aware that one of the biggest problems you face is poor funding. We are therefore determined to ensure that this matter is handled appropriately. We have therefore resolved to do everything possible to see that funding for this college improves in subsequent appropriations by the National Assembly.”

Speaking at the 32nd annual convocation of the college at the its premises in Ijanikin Thursday last week, Arogundade had again sought funding for institution generally, and particularly in the overseas clinical attachment designed to give more successful Part One candidates of the institution exposure to facilities and practice in more advanced countries.

Said Arogundade: “We will not stop reminding government of the laudable programme of overseas clinical attachment designed to give successful Part One candidates exposure to facilities and practice in more advanced countries especially in selected sub-specialities. Epileptic implementation of this essential component of training will be detrimental in the long run to the country.

“Our personnel and overhead subventions have been grossly slashed to the extent that the college cannot fulfill its personnel tax obligations promptly and we are now in arrears. The capital subvention as usual, comes in trickles, which will definitely mean extended completion time for the ongoing second phase of the second wing of our learning Resources building.”

Arogundade said the college plan of establishing a Clinical skills and simulation laboratory, has been hampered by cash. The solution, according to him, is intervention through tertiary Education Tax Fund since NPGMCN is anchored on medical education.

Tambuwal, who was represented by Joseph Haruna Dibi, lamented the decline the number of specialists in the country, coupled with incidence of brain drain even among the few available.

“First, there is the low number of specialists in various fields of Medicine in Nigeria today. We must as much as possible seek ways to correct this anomaly and increase the number of specialist available for our people.

“Second, there is the related matter of brain drain in which even the few available specialists we have are leaving the country in droves. This is detrimental to the growth of our health industry and no doubt has very dangerous consequences to our very survival as a nation proud of its large population”

As the apex body for certifying postgraduate medical education in the country, Lagos State Governor Fashola said the state considers it a privilege as host to the institution.

He said the long time relationship between the PGMCN and Lagos needs to be consolidated upon in view of the symbiotic relationship both have enjoyed to date.

“The world cannot stand still so the degree of interaction between the National Post Graduate Medical College of Nigeria and Lagos State must rise above the level of consumption. We must move into the field of mutual cooperation, particularly in cutting edge research. Lagos State is desirous to cooperate and collaborate with individuals and bodies willing to engage in research that will help improve the delivery of quality health services to the teeming population of this megacity. Only last year, Lagos State launched a research fund for the first set of awardees.

“I understand that this college conducts periodic accreditation exercise to ensure quality of training facilities and programmes. This is one area that Lagos State is sincerely committed to. We cannot have institutions for the sake of having them. Rather, the Lagos State government believes in and will never compromise quality. We are prepared to partner with you to raise training institution in the state to the highest levels.

Fashola reminded all of the industrial action being by Resident doctors nationwide describing the development as bad. He therefore admonished the college to seek a meeting point for conflict resolutions between governments and medical associations rather than resort to strike.

The convocation lecture with the theme: ‘High blood pressure: The silent killer’ was delivered by the Provost of the College of Medicine, Ekiti State University, Prof Mathew Akinyeni Araoye.

Tambuwal to NBA: Challenge illegal election campaigners now

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has been challenged to take up politicians and political parties that are flouting electoral rules on electioneering campaigns.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, on Thursday said some politicians have already switched to “election mood” in contravention of the electoral law.

According to him, such political office holders have abandoned their duties to the detriment of good governance.

Tambuwal spoke while receiving the leadership of the NBA led by its President, Augustine Alegeh (SAN), who tasked the House on the speedy passage of the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB).

The Speaker, however, dispelled fears expressed by some Nigerians on the possibility of the 2015 general election not holding.

Tambuwal said the country at this time is in need of a vibrant and fearless NBA that would intervene on critical national issues, while drawing support for the military.

He said: “I dont think Nigeria has ever had it so rough in its journey to nationhood.

“The leadership of the NBA has important role to play in addressing the challenges facing the country at this time.

“Not only by way of constructive advice and drawing attention when things are going wrong but also by ensuring that we play the game by the rules. “

Tambuwal, Igbinedion seek support for Ajimobi

House of Representatives’ Speaker Aminu Tambuwal and the Chancellor of the Igbinedion University, Okada, Edo State, Sir Gabriel Igbinedion, at the weekend showered encomiums on Oyo State Governor Abiola Ajimobi, urging the people to stand by him.

They spoke at separate events in Ibadan, the state capital.

Tambuwal, who was speaking at an empowerment programme organised by a member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Saheed Fijabi, praised the governor for what he called his brilliant performance and monumental achievements.

“I want to appreciate Governor Abiola Ajimobi for his wonderful performance in Oyo State. I have always said this and will keep on saying it that whenever and wherever you identify good leaders who are doing well, you must continue to acknowledge them and commend them for their good works.

“Notwithstanding the political affiliations and political party differences of the people of Oyo State, Governor Ajimobi has continued to meet the need of the people,” he said.

In his address, Governor Ajimobi noted that the track record of people for political offices should be major factor in next year’s general elections.

He enjoined the people not to sell their conscience through monetary inducements during elections, saying this would have negative effect on the future of the country.

Speaking at his 80th birthday event organised by the University of Ibadan, Igbinedion said he once lived in Ibadan as a Constable in the Nigeria Police.

He expressed surprise that when he got to the capital of Oyo State, he missed his way due to the many infrastructural developments that have been brought to the state by the Ajimobi government.

“I have at least six houses in Ibadan. When I spoke with the governor days before this event and he assured me that I would miss my way, I didn’t believe him but when I got here, I indeed missed my way. Even though he is building on what his predecessors did but his achievements stand out,” he said.

He added that the administration has also made Ibadan more secured.

“Ibadan and Oyo State got its name from the Wild Wild West of the First Republic and that violence continued until of recent. I want to commend the governor for ensuring that there is peace in this land and for the development that he has brought to the state. If Oyo State people are appreciative like our people, they will automatically give you a second term,” Igbinedion said.

  • Elections should not be militarised- Tambuwal

Elections should not be militarised- Tambuwal

AHEAD the 2015 general elections, Speaker of the Federal House of Representatives, Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal, has said it is undemocratic to over militarize the country.
He urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure the conduct of a free and fair election in 2015.
The Speaker spoke at the residence of the Deputy Governor of Edo state, Dr Pius Odubu on Saturday before attending the wedding of the son of the Oba of Benin, Prince Ehioze Erediauwa and wife Chioma.
Tambuwal was flanked by the Minority Whip of the House and member representing Uhumwonde/Orhiomnwon Federal constituency, Samson Osagie, Rasaq Bello-Osagie (Oredo Federal Constituency), Jim Adun (Egor/Ikpoba Okhai), Isaac Osahon (Ovia Federal Constituency) and members of the Edo state Executive.
Pointing out that states must not be over militarized during elections in order not to discourage people from voting, the Speaker stated that “I have made my position known at the NBA conference about a week ago.”
“And I said that it is not the best of fashions in a democracy that you militarize a process to the extent that voters get intimidated and scared and they rather withdraws and remain indoors.”

  • Jonathan, Tambuwal disagree on elections’ credibility

Jonathan, Tambuwal disagree on elections’ credibility

President Goodluck Jonathan and House of Representatives Speaker Aminu Tambuwal on Monday disagreed on the credibility of recent governorship elections in Nigeria.

Tambuwal said recent polls were more like those conducted by the military regimes and were not free, fair and credible.

The Speaker said the elections have been characterized by intimidation, which is undemocratic and creates apprehension among voters.

But President Jonathan insisted that the recent elections in Ondo, Anambra, Ekiti and Osun are not only credible, but demonstrated that electoral reforms are working.

They spoke at the opening ceremony of the 54th Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in Owerri, Imo State capital, with the theme: “Nigeria, A Hundred Years After.”

Jonathan, represented by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mohammed Bello Adoke (SAN), said the government has focused on the review and reform of the country’s electoral processes to make them better and more responsive to the people’s yearnings.

“The free, fair and credible elections conducted in Ondo, Anambra, Ekiti and Osun States are demonstration of the efficacy of the reforms this administration has instituted in our electoral processes.

“While there is room for improvement, the fact that politicians can now congratulate each other at the end of keenly contested elections is glowing testimony to the progress made and the evolving political culture that credible elections have engendered in the polity,” Adoke said.

But Tambuwal said politics, which is supposed to be a pleasant routine for the common good, has become a source of “sickening stress” for the citizenry.

According to him, instead of looking forward to 2015 elections with joy and pleasant expectations, the average citizen is overtaken by apprehension.

“When the complexion of election conducted by a civilian regime assumes the semblance of that conducted by a military junta, it is obvious that the nation needs help.

“The nation craves for credible elections that are free, fair, transparent and peaceful.

“Elections which are merely peaceful through the instrumentality of force and intimidation are neither democratic nor credible,” Tambuwal said.

On the fight against graft, Adoke said the anti-graft agencies have reviewed their operational modalities to make them more effective.

He disclosed that a national anti-corruption strategy has been articulated in line with Nigeria’s obligations under United Nations Convention against Corruption and would be presented to the Federal Executive Council for approval.

  • 2015: Presidency, PDP plot against Tambuwal

2015: Presidency, PDP plot against Tambuwal

Irked by an alleged plan by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, to contest the 2015 Presidency, the Presidency and the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are working on different options to cut him to size, reports Assistant Editor, Remi Adelowo

he stage appears set for what promises to be an epic battle between the Presidency, the national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on one hand and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, on the other.

The Speaker had, last week, stirred the hornets net when he gave what many considered as his clearest hint yet that he may be bidding the PDP goodbye soon.

Three years after he rallied forces within the PDP and other opposition parties to emerge as Speaker in contravention of the PDP’s zoning formula, which zoned the Speakership to the South-West region, the relationship between Tambuwal and the Presidency has been frosty at best.

Months before he spoke last week on his future political ambition, the rumour mill has been agog on Tambuwal’s planned defection to the major opposition party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and alleged intention to contest the 2015 Presidency on the platform of the party.

Albeit for tactical reasons, the Sokoto State-born lawmaker refrained from speaking on this subject, leaving his spokesman and political associates to talk on his behalf. And even at that, statements volunteered by these people have been ambiguous thereby leaving room for more speculations on the Speaker’s post-2015 game plan.

But with his last week’s comments where he reportedly said that Nigeria deserves a better leadership in 2015, the Presidency and the PDP, sources revealed, have allegedly reached the conclusion that Tambuwal must be checkmated ‘before it is too late.’

    The many plots against Tambuwal

The checkmating strategy, when it comes into effect, would not be the first in the many plots against Tambuwal in the last three years.

Banking on his broad-based support in the House, which defies political affiliation of his colleagues, Tambuwal has successfully survived several plots by forces allegedly backed by the Presidency to remove him from office.

About three years ago in the aftermath of Hon. Farouk Lawan bribery scandal which rocked the House of Representatives to its foundation, some House members, allegedly backed by external forces, made attempts to link the Speaker to the scandal. But this move was thwarted following a vote of confidence passed on Tambuwal by his colleagues.

Another instance was cited of an alleged plot allegedly spearheaded by a lawmaker from the South-South to impeach Tambuwal.

The lawmaker, who is said to be the Chairman of a ‘Grade A’ committee, had attempted to pitch House members against the Speaker on the excuse that Tambuwal had been less than transparent in the purchase of Toyota Camry cars purchased for all the committees in the House in the discharge of oversight functions.

To douse tension and put the record straight, the Speaker allegedly convened an executive session during which he reportedly laid bare all the facts of the case.

But rather than mete out sanctions against the lawmaker as canvassed by majority of House members, the lawmaker was let off the hook after he tendered an apology to the Speaker.

“Aside from the apology offered by the member, who is still occupying his position till date, no punitive measure was taken against him by the Speaker,” said a lawmaker, who was present while the whole drama played out.

When all moves against the Speaker in the House failed, his antagonists shifted their plot against him to his home state, with alleged attempts to instigate the local chapter of the PDP to expel Tambuwal from the party.

The alleged plan, it was gathered, was for the PDP local chapter to announce Tambuwal’s expulsion, with the national leadership coming into the picture later by ‘magnanimously’ converting the expulsion to suspension “pending further investigation.”

Sources said the local executive members of the party, however, saw through the plot and declared that it was beyond them to expel him.

The Nation learnt that days before the execution of the plot, some chieftains of the party in the state had allegedly gone round urging PDP members in Tambuwal’s local government to append their signatures and names to a “vote of no confidence” motion meant to be passed on the Speaker after his planned expulsion.

But like a cat with the proverbial nine lives, the Speaker again survived the plot through the intervention of Governor Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko.

The governor, according to sources, reportedly prevailed upon the party chieftains in Tambuwal’s local government not to allow themselves be used to disturb the peace of the state.

    New offensive in the offing

Not deterred on the many failed plots against Tambuwal in the past, sources revealed that Presidency strategists are exploring fresh options to get rid of the Speaker within the next two months.

Buoyed by the recent defections of some APC, Labour Party (LP) and All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) members in the House of Representatives to the PDP (with more allegedly in the offing), hawks in the Presidency are said to be convinced that with the numerical advantage enjoyed by the PDP in the House, an impeachment move should be launched against Tambuwal as soon as possible.

The calculations, it is said, is to put the Speaker on the defensive, giving little or no ample time to mobilise on his alleged presidential project.

A source said, “The PDP leadership is eager to get rid of Tambuwal and seems confident of actualising the plan. What may likely happen is that PDP members in the House will be issued a stern directive to move against Tambuwal once the coast is clear.”

    Tambuwal’s counter-strategy

Aware that the Presidency and the PDP leadership can’t wait for too long to see his back, sources disclosed that the Speaker’s camp has also devised measures to save his job.

The Speaker’s greatest strength is his close relationship with his colleagues, which transcends official or party matters.

For most of the House members, particularly those committee chairmen, The Nation gathered that they have vowed to remain loyal to the Speaker, who despite pressure from some unnamed forces, have consistently declined to remove them.

This tactical decision, more than anything else, has ensured the stability of the 7th National Assembly and consolidated the support base of the Speaker.

How Tambuwal will continue to navigate the landmines laid on his path in the months ahead remains to be seen.

  • Nigeria deserves good leadership in 2015, says Tambuwal

Nigeria deserves good leadership in 2015, says Tambuwal

House of Representatives Speaker Aminu Waziri Tambuwal yesterday said Nigeria deserves a better leadership to make progress.

The Speaker said Nigerians should see themselves as the primary instrument for achieving national progress.

He said Nigeria is vast for anyone to perpetrate himself in office, adding: “No matter one’s political ambition, the constitution is supreme in a democracy and every citizen must obey the laws of the country and act according to the constitution.”

Disabusing the minds of Nigerians on the proposed amendment of the constitution, recommended by the National Conference, Tambuwal said altough the conference was initiated by the Federal Government, but “we legislators will have to subject every recommendation to due process of legislation, as it were”.

The Speaker urged registered Nigerian voters and those of voting ages to get their Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs).

Tambuwal spoke yesterday in his home town Tambuwal after picking his PVC at the Alhaji Hadi Waziri Ward.

The Speaker said only free, fair and credible elections would earn the confidence of Nigerians who he said were ready to elect better leadership in 2015.

He said: “We cannot hide under any guise or excuse not to conduct free, fair and credible elections.

“If nations like Afghanistan, Syria and Iraq can conduct peaceful and credible elections under its challenging atmosphere. We have no reason not to as well.”

Tambuwal hailed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for trying to improve the electoral process, despite inadequate facilities.

He said: “It is an improvement on the past, and this should be continued by the commission until we get it right.”

According to him, INEC should leverage on its independence to earn the confidence of the electorate.

Tambuwal said: “We, as legislators and government, are working towards a more effective legal frame work that would guarantee INEC autonomy backed by resources through possible amendments of the Act establishing it.”

The Speaker noted that this would enable the commission to maintain a first line charge to guarantee its financial independence.

He added that the National Assembly would soon conduct a public hearing to enable INEC perform better.

  • Tambuwal urges arrests

    Tambuwal urges arrests

House of Representatives Speaker Aminu Waziri Tambuwal has said the twin bombings in Kaduna on Wednesday as cruel, barbaric and heinous crime.

He noted that targeting prominent persons, as it happened in the twin blasts, was regrettable and condemnable.

In a statement yesterday in Abuja by his Special Adviser on Media and Public Affairs, Malam Imam Imam, the Speaker said killing innocent persons cannot be justified under any guise.

He said whoever was behind the Kaduna blasts should be brought to justice.

Tambuwal thanked God that the apparent targets – General Muhammadu Buhari and Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi – escaped unhurt.

But the Speaker was sad that many people were killed in the blasts.

“Our sympathy and condolences are with the families of the victims of the blast. Their loved ones did not die in vain,” he said.

The Speaker prayed for the quick recovery of those injured or traumatised in the blasts.
