  • Seven die in Ekiti tanker fire

IT was a sorry sight in Aramoko-Ekiti, Ekiti West Local Government Area, where a truck laden with fuel veered off a sloppy road and ran into some buildings.

The truck burst into flames. Seven people died in the fire.

The incident occurred around some minutes to six pm on Tuesday. Four buildings, two vehicles, 10 motorcycles and other valuables, all estimated at about N10 million, were destroyed.

As at 6:30am yesterday, the charred carcasses of the burnt vehicles, in various mangled shapes, were still on the scene. Sympathisers gathered there, wearing mournful looks.

Relations of the victims exclaiming from time to time, saying: “Olorun mi o, ofo semi” (oh my God, I am bereaved); “Iru iku wo ni eyi, mo daran” (what kind of death this, I am in trouble).

The dead include Pa Abiodun Ololade (78); Kokoro Owo (reportedly in his fifties) and a teenager said to be one Gani Foto’s step child.

An eyewitness said the propeller of the truck detached while it was descending a sloppy portion of the road from Ibadan-Ilesa end of the town.

He said: “There was nothing the driver could do. We followed it down to see how he would manage but the truck went where it wanted to go. It rolled off the road into the buildings and caught fire. A boy called Wande, who repairs laptops and handsets, escaped death because he was not in his shop. His shop and everything in it was destroyed.”

Mr. Agunbiade Kareem, who lived in one of the buildings and lost a brand new Toyota Corolla in the fire, said he was outside the building when he saw the truck falling off its path and exploding.

He said: “I was outside here when I saw the truck coming down and tumbling into the building. Thick smoke rose up, followed by an explosion that consumed the area. Apart from human loses, I lost a brand new Toyota Corolla, which someone proposed to buy from me at N1.4 million but I refused. I also lost two plasma TVs, one Sharp TV, six DSTV decoders and N513,000 cash, which I wanted to travel with today (yesterday).”

Mrs. Arowosafe Kubrat, who lost a Honda Accord car, said she returned from Osogbo around 5pm and parked her car in front of the house.

She said: “A few minutes later, I heard a loud explosion. I rushed outside and could not see my car. Inside it, I had N103,000, some tubers of yam, a leather box containing clothes, the particulars of my vehicle and those of another car.”

The tanker driver and another occupant of the truck are being detained at the Aramoko Divisional Police Station.

Five of the bodies were taken to the mortuary of the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH).

The Deputy Governor, Prof. Modupe Adelabu, visited the scene around 9am yesterday.

She urged the people to stop building houses close to the highway, explaining that trading or living in structures built on the Right of Way (ROW) and driving faulty vehicles portend danger for the people.

In an emotional voice, the deputy governor described the incident as “unfortunate”, urging the relatives of the dead to take succour in God.

She warned residents against taking the law into their hands, adding that measures would be taken to forestall a recurrence.

Mrs. Adelabu said speed breakers would be put on sloppy areas on the

Itawure-Ado-Ekiti stretch of the road as a temporary measure while the state dialogues with the Federal Government (the owner of the road) on how to provide a permanent solution to the challenges on the road.

The deputy governor, who later visited the Alara of Aramoko-Ekiti, Oba Olu Adegoke Adeyemi, to commiserate with him, urged drivers to always put their vehicles in order before driving them.

“If the trucks are well taken care of, most of these accidents would not occur,” she added.

Oba Adeyemi thanked the state government for its concern and urged the Federal Government to revisit the abandoned expressway located outside the town, which would offer an alternative route for motorists. She said the town’s road is accident prone because of its bends and slopes.

15 die in Lagos tanker fire

It was a night of horror for residents of Kirikiri Road, Apapa. A petrol tanker laden with 33,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) somersaulted, resulting in an inferno that destroyed several buildings, including a bank’s branch, Tuesday night.

By the time the inferno was brought under control early yesterday, no fewer than 15 people –including an expectant woman- had been burnt to death, 11 vehicles destroyed and property worth millions of naira razed.

Eyewitnesses gave a chilling account of how the tragedy occurred.

Azubuike Igboanugo, a trader at Ebunottin Shopping Plaza, said:

“I was standing here; I saw it as it happened. The tanker was coming from Kirikiri town and going to Wilmer, right here at Berger Suya bus stop. Two danfo buses were loading and many people were standing by the suya man to buy meat. Suddenly, we saw the tanker swerving and it appeared it had lost control. When it got to the Suya man, the driver turned the wheel to avoid hitting the buses and the tanker turned over, spilling the fuel. The fire from the Suya sellers stoked the inferno. I saw about 20 bodies, including that of an expectant woman.”

Others said the driver must have lost control due to a brake failure, which prompted him to ram his tanker into the vehicles at the bus stop. As soon as the tanker fell and fuel began to spill into the drainage on Kirikiri Road, fire from the Suya sellers helped to ignite the fuel, causing maximum damage. In Ebunottin Plaza alone, 54 lock-up shops selling motor parts were destroyed.

Director, Federal Fire Service, Ganiu Olayowla and National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) spokesman Ibrahim Farinloye, both said 15 bodies were recovered at the end of rescue operations at 1:04am.

“We had about nine casualties that night, which were handed over to the police and on Wednesday morning, six more bodies were recovered from the debris.

“It involved a petrol tanker, which later spread to four houses and four commercial buses, all burnt down,” Olayiwola said.

Olufemi Osanyitolu, the Director of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) whose men were also on a search and salvage mission, gave a different account of the incident and the death toll.

“It happened around 10:30 pm. We do not know where the tanker was coming from, but it apparently somersaulted here and the driver and motor boy were burnt beyond recognition. We recovered three other bodies on the ground but there was no way we could identify who they were,” he said.

When pressed to give an accurate number of casualties, Osanyitolu said his agency recovered only five charred bodies. “When an incident like this happens, there will always be information one cannot verify. We counted five bodies and 11 vehicles that were destroyed.”

Osanyitolu also warned that drivers should ensure their vehicles are in good working conditions before embarking on any journey noting that the tragedy would have been avoided if the tanker driver had ensured his vehicle was in a good working condition.

The epicentre of the tragedy was the branch of a bank whose upper floor was completely gutted. According to an employee, who do not want to be named, immediately the fire began, hoodlums brandishing cutlasses and axes attacked the bank and tried to steal money and other valuables.

“These people are animals; they attacked the ATM with axe, destroying a part of it, but could not open the safe. Then, they came inside the bank and attacked the strong room but could not break into it. After that they attempted to remove the generator; when that proved difficult, they took away the pumping machine and diesel,” an employee said.

Employees of the bank were moving cash and other valuables into a waiting van yesterday. Neighborhood youths gathered to watch the unusual scenario.

Rasaq Fadipe, Director, Lagos State Fire Service, corroborated this claim: “We got the call at 22:43 hours after which we immediately dispatched three trucks of 10,000 litres of water and one truck carrying 600 litres of chemical foam. Immediately we came – we are aware of the contribution of banks to our economy, a lot of people have their cash trapped in there – we quickly faced the bank.

“But many of these street boys came in and disturbed us seriously. They were using hammer to break into the bank; so, we had to leave the place,” Fadipe added.

As salvage efforts by emergency agencies were underway yesterday, Gabriel Nwafor, sat in front of whatever remained of his store, surrounded by sympathisers. He lost over N6million worth of goods to the inferno.

“I give thanks to God. I travelled back from the East yesterday and nothing happened. I’m incurring this loss,” he said, shaking while friends comforted him with a pat on his shoulders. But his loss was nothing compared to Godwin Eze’s. His goods worth N10 million was destroyed.”Buyers were supposed to pay for this truck today. They were coming with N7million. Now that is gone. This truck is worth N17million with the goods,” said another trader, Andy Samuel.

Berger Business Community chairman Okey Udeagbara said the loss of the trading community runs into hundreds of millions.

The traders did not insured their trucks and goods. Besides, the identity of the driver and the tanker’s owner were unknown.

“The Lagos State government should help us identify the owner of the tanker through the chassis number so we can get compensation,” Udeagbara said.

As at 3:pm, yesterday, burnt vehicles were being evacuated from the site, which LASEMA promised to fumigate to prevent an epidemic.

Technicians from the Power Holding Company were disconnecting electricity to avoid electrocution.

Residents watched from the safety of their homes.

  • Three killed in Ogbomoso tanker fire

Three people were yesterday killed in an accident involving two loaded fuel tankers and an 18-seater bus in Ogbomoso, Oyo State.

The accident occurred around 8:30am at Odo Oba.

A petrol tanker coming from Ogbomoso collided with the commercial bus at a sharp bend where another petrol tanker had broken down.

The Unit Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ogbomoso Unit, Mr. George Adedipe, said: “Three vehicles were involved in the crash. They are two tankers, marked XS 732 AGL and XB 476 AKK (DAF 185 belonging to Conoil) and an 18-seater bus.”

He said the bus and the tanker, marked XS 732 AGL, were burnt.

Adedipe said 21 men and two wome were involved in the accident.

He said: “Nine men were injured, three died and two were trapped in the bus.”

Those injured were said to have been taken to a private clinic in Ogbomoso and the bodies deposited in the mortuary.

The accident caused heavy traffic on the Ibadan-Ilorin Expressway.

An eyewitness, who spoke with The Nation on the telephone, said one of the tankers had been stationary on the road for two days.

The witness said: “The accident occurred on a sloppy and sharp corner of the road. It obstructed traffic flow on the busy road and made the rescue operation difficult. Even 50 kilometres away from the scene was too hot for anyone to stay.

“The second tanker collided with the bus and the three vehicles went up in flames. People were inside the bus.”

Spokesman of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Mr. Ibrahim Farinloye said the number of victims could not be ascertained yet. He said: A fully loaded petrol tanker ran over an 18-seater commercial bus at a sharp bend at Odo Oba village, five kilometres to Ogbomoso from Ibadan, where another tanker loaded with petrol had broken down, and they burst into flame.

Only three people escaped. Officials of the Nigerian Army have cordoned off the area. The Oyo Fire Service and other emergency agencies have been mobilised to the scene and they are working hard to put out the fire.

“Traffic flow to and from the south has been disrupted and alternative routes would be created soon with the assistance of the Reynolds Construction Company (RCC).”

Director of the Oyo State Fire Service Mr. Kareem Oyekunle said: “The fire has been put out. From the report I got from my men on the scene, there was no casualty. My men were called around 9am and they did not leave the place until past noon.”
