    Not time for bickering

Two governors of neighbouring states, both elected on the ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC), have different ideas of the cause, and thus solution to the herdsmen crises ravaging various parts of the country. Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State and Tanko Al Makura of Nasarawa State are at war over the location of the killer herdsmen who have invaded and murdered many farmers and innocent residents of Benue State. Ortom accused the neighbouring Nasarawa of harbouring and, perhaps, supporting the herdsmen who allegedly strike from Tonga and recoil there to avoid being apprehended by the security forces. But, Al Makura has expressed angst that his colleague could make an allegation he regarded as wild. The Nasarawa State governor explained that he was so concerned about the crisis that he had to cut short his vacation to lend a helping hand. He said many of the displaced Benue residents have been accommodated in the same Awe Local Government that Ortom claimed hosts the murderers.

The tango is uncalled for. The two gentlemen are supposed to share and compare notes with a view to finding a lasting solution to what has become a major plague. If Gov. Ortom could be running to Abuja so frequently to seek support and solution to the crisis, it is surprising that he never considered visiting neighbouring states with a view to finding and tackling the problem at its root. What would Gov. Al Makura gain by being a source of Benue’s pain? Why would the [people of Nasarawa be allies of the marauding herdsmen who are not doing the same in their own state?

We understand the pressure under which Governor Ortom is operating and the likely consequences. However, it is the mark of leadership that a man weighs his words and actions because of the likely effects. Utterances have been known to set communities and countries ablaze. At this point what Benue needs are friends, not enemies. If Gov. Al Makura were to react to the allegations by his Benue counterpart, he would send the displaced persons back to their state of origin and that would not only deepen the woes of the people, but is capable of exacerbating the crisis.

We are surprised that the security forces are yet to get to the root of a crisis that has festered for so long. Had the Police and the Department of State Services responded promptly and professionally to the crisis when it began, there would have been no controversy over the location of the purveyors of death and their modes of operation. The Federal Government should be reminded again that the primary purpose of governance is two-fold -security of lives and property and welfare of the citizens. Any government that fails in these respects does not deserve the support and respect of the people. So far, government agencies have failed the Benue people and, by extension Taraba and other states. It was this failure that led to the promulgation of the anti-open grazing law and increased tension between farmers and the herdsmen.

What has the government done to rein in and bring the murderers to book? What, too, has been done to ensure that the herdsmen have access year-round to water and grazing for their livestock? Do we have a virile policy that would promote livestock farming in the most conducive environment? It is unfortunate that the President had to wait for the sacrifice of about 73 lives in the latest round of butchery before he realised the need to dispatch the Inspector General of Police to the State, and send the Interior Minister to assess the situation. Mr. President should realise that the whole country is his constituency and injury to one is injury to all. He has to learn to respond more swiftly to crisis. It is his predilection for slow reaction that has given rise to allegations that he supports crimes committed by the Fulani. Indeed, this is a wakeup call to him and his government.

Sodangi wants Nasarawa North to produce governor in 2019

Sen. Abubakar Sodangi on Thursday threw his weight behind the calls to zone the Nasarawa State governorship seat to the north senatorial district in 2019.

“Nasarawa North is the only senatorial district yet to produce a governor. The first civilian governor, Abdullahi Adamu, was from the West senatorial district, while his successor, Akwe Doma, and the incumbent, Tanko Al-makura, are from the south.

“It is only fair that the north be given a chance as well. We must consider their request for justice and the need for oneness,” Sodangi told reporters in Nasarawa.

Sodangi, a three-term senator, who represented Nasarawa West in the Senate from 1999 to 2011, under the platform of PDP, defected to the APC last year.

“I have told the people of Nasarawa North to put their house in order; I have told them to unite so that we can beg other zones to support them.

“It is not anyone’s right to insist on the governorship, but we need to listen to each so as to build a strong and united state with equal opportunities.

“I understand that my former political party, the PDP, has already zoned the seat to Nasarawa North. If my  present political party, the APC, equally zones it to the north, I shall be happy,” he said.

  • Nasarawa warns against epidemic

    Nasarawa warns against epidemic

The Nasarawa State Government has warned residents that indiscriminate dumping of refuse and building of illegal structures along water ways could cause flooding and epidemic.

The state Commissioner for Information, Alhaji Abdulhamid Kwara, gave the warning on Thursday during a sensitisation campaign on the effects of flooding organised by the ministry for residents of Karu Local Government Area of the state.

Kwara said that flood has several health implications on human lives and the environment and the best remedy is prevention.

He said that the campaign was to educate and enlighten residents on the dangers of flooding as well as to advise them to avoid dumping of refuse along water ways.

The commissioner called for change of attitude among the people involved in indiscriminate dumping of refuse to avoid flooding.

“The Nasarawa State Government under Gov. Tanko Al-Makura’s administration is doing its best in keeping the environment clean, hence the need for the sensitisation campaign so as to educate the people on the dangers of flooding to the society.

“It is also the responsibility of everybody to complement government efforts by keeping his or her environment clean because it is often said that a healthy nation is a wealthy nation.

“It is on this note that the government and stakeholders are always advising the people on the need to maintain personal and environmental hygiene in the interest of their lives and for the overall development of the society.

“I want to use this medium to appeal to the people of the state in general to avoid indiscriminate dumping of refuse on drainages, building of structures along water ways considering its health implication on human lives and to avoid flooding,” he said.

Bi-cameral legislature too expensive – NNPP

Mr Shakirudeen Olofin, Lagos State Chairman, New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), says the the bicameral legislature the country operates is too expensive.

Olofin spoke in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Lagos.

He said the party aligned with the view expressed by Gov. Tanko Al-Makura of Nasarawa State on Monday that Nigeria would save costs with a unicameral legislature.

Al-Makura had made the suggestion while hosting some Alumni members of Ahmadu Bello University at Government House, Lafia.

The NNPP Chairman said the Senate and the House of Representatives were merely duplicating functions and the country would be better with just one chamber.

Olofin, however, said that only the people could decide which of the systems they preferred, and asked that the issue be subjected to public debate.

“The current system of two chambers of National Assembly, for us, is not cost effective as it is a drain of resources.

“The two chambers are duplicating functions, and we don’t think we need that in the country.

“However, we suggest Nigerians should decide on the issue. The should decide whether to keep the current system or do away with one,’’ he said.

The State Secretary of the Labour Party, Mr Bolaji Oshinowo, who also spoke on the matter, described the two-chamber National Assembly as “a burden on the country’s resources.’’

Oshinowo said the contributions of the two houses to national assembly are not commensurate with the huge annual budgetary spending on them.

He suggested either the scrapping of one of the arms or adoption of part-time legislators, in which representatives held sessions when they had serious deliberations.
