  • Buhari condoles President Magufuli, Tanzanians on ferry disaster

    President Muhammadu Buhari has commiserated with President John Magufuli and the people of Tanzania on the tragic MVNyerere ferry disaster in the south of Lake Victoria.

    The disaster is said to have claimed over a hundred lives.

    Condoling the Tanzanian President on the causalities, President Buhari, in a statement by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and publicity, Garba Shehu, assured his African brother and the good people of Tanzania of the sympathy of all Nigerians as they mourn the death of their loved ones on MVNyerere.

    According to the Nigerian leader, the prayers and thoughts of all Nigerians are with the families and friends of the bereaved even as rescue efforts by emergency services continue.

    The President prayed that God Almighty will comfort all those who lost relatives and friends in the accident and grant eternal rest to the departed souls.

  • Balogun advises Eaglets to be cautious against Niger

    A sport analyst, Tayo Balogun, on Tuesday advised the Golden Eaglets to play cautiously in their match against Niger Republic in the ongoing U-17 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

    Balogun, who gave the advice in a telephone interview with News Agency of Nigeria in Ibadan, said that the semi-final match was crucial and sensitive.

    The Golden Eaglets will lock horns with their Niger counterparts on Sept. 12 by 7p.m. Nigerian time.

    ‘‘They should play their game with caution and adequate respect for the opponents; they should open up their opponents by using the wings,” Balogun said.

    The sport analyst urged the Eaglets’ handlers to present the same team that defeated Cote d’Ivoire in the match.

    ‘‘We scored seven goals in two matches while conceding four; this shows a team whose strength is in the attack.

    ‘‘We should go with the same players that featured against Cote d’Ivoire.

    ‘‘Niger played draws against Ghana and Togo, and this shows they would buckle against a high pressing side like the Eaglets,’’ Balogun said.

    Recall that the Golden Eaglets lost 2-3 to Burkina Faso in their opening game and won Cote d’Ivoire by 5-1 in their second game.

    The Golden Eaglets are optimistic of making a return to the global stage by qualifying for Tanzania 2019.

  • I share same ideas with Tanzanian Football Federation — Amuneke

    Coach Emmanuel Amuneke with Tanzanian Football Federation officials after he was unveiled as the country’s national teams’ coach in Da-es-salam on Monday.

    Appointment

    Emmanuel Amuneke, the newly inaugurated coach of the Tanzanian national team, on Tuesday said he shared the same ideas with the country`s football philosophy.

    Amuneke, a former coach of the Nigerian U-17 and U-20 national teams, signed a two-year contract with the Tanzanian Football Federation on Aug. 6 to coach its national teams.

    He said on the telephone from Dar- es-Salam, Tanzania’s major city and commercial port on the Indian Ocean coast that he was grateful to the Tanzanian FA for choosing him.

    “ I am grateful to the Tanzanian people. I’m also grateful to the President and General Secretary of the Tanzanian Football Federation for giving me the opportunity to coach their teams.

    “We are happy that the ideas that they have is the same with what I have in mind. Hopefully and collectively, we will be able to see how Tanzanian football can grow and develop,’’ he said.

    Amuneke, who served as a member of the FIFA technical study group in the Russia World Cup, said that there was need to develop young players.

    “African football is laying emphasis on developing young players and that is the direction the Tanzanian football have taken to develop.

    “ They have good players. Some are playing in Europe and others are playing at home.

    “ We have our first game against Uganda in September and we will look at our team to improve on it. Work has already started and we will do our best,’’ he said.

    The former Nigerian and Barcelona winger, assured that through hard work, discipline and collective efforts, he would move Tanzanian football forward.

  • Nigeria, Tanzania, collaborate on investments

    Nigerian Ambassador to the United Republic of Tanzania, Ambassador Sahabi Isa Gada on Tuesday said the two countries are into strong collaboration to promote and sustain mutual investments into both nations.

    Ambassador Gada while disclosing to reporters in Sokoto on the bilateral efforts said, ” at Mission level, we have been working with the Nigerian Investment Promotion Council and the Nigerian Export Promotion Council, to get more investments into Nigeria and vice versa .”

    He explained that there were millions of fish species in Zanzibar that Nigerians can invest and reap huge profits, adding, ” fishing in Tanzania is not capital intensive. ”

    According to the Ambassador, there were various existing bilateral cooperations between the two countries, averring that, the moribund ones would also be revived soon.

    He further noted that, there were several Nigerian companies successfully operating in Tanzania like Dangote cement, Sahara Group, an Oil firm, as well as UBA and GTB.

    ” Nigerians are very enterprising and they are faring well in various parts of Tanzania, undertaking assorted trading activities . ”

    The immediate past Secretary to the Government of Sokoto state pointed out that , one of them was the existing Technical Aid Corps Scheme, where Nigeria is providing technical support to Zanzibar.

    He said that, there were currently thirty Nigerians under the corps, helping in the areas of Science and Technological Education.

    ” The governments of Tanzania and Zanzibar are really happy with what the Nigerian government is doing for them ,” Ambassador Gada, averred.

    ” A lot of Nigerians are trooping to Tanzania sequel to the visa on entry policy the country was operating, under which they issue a three months visa.”

    According to the Envoy, Nigerians were well respected in Tanzania, cautioning however, ” their immigration rules and regulations are very strict and the sanctions for their breach include deportation , as well as various jail terms , including life sentence .”

    In the same vein, Ambassador Gada disclosed that , the Mission was also collaborating with the various Nigerian communities to conduct a census of all Nigerians staying legally in Tanzania.

    He expressed happiness that, the Mission was operating successfully, as a against the sorry state of the various Nigerian Missions, abroad, in the past, saying, ” that is now history,with the current adminstration of President Muhammadu Buhari .

    The cashless bazaar and exhibition had several products for sale ranging from clothes, shoes, all EDMARK products, provisions, inspirational books, hair accessories etc using the EDPOINT mobile application.

  • NDIC assists Ugandan agency on capacity building

    The Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) is assisting the Uganda Deposit Protection Fund (DPFU) to develop capacity to implement the Deposit Insurance System (DIS) in the East African country.

    In a statement by Mohammed Kudu Ibrahim, NDIC’s Head of Communications and Public Affairs, the Corporation recently hosted a five-member delegation from DPFU who arrived the country to understudy the activities of the Corporation.

    He said: “The NDIC has been the destination of choice for several sister agencies and Central Banks from across the African continent eager to understudy the activities of the Corporation and learn from its rich experience in Deposit Insurance – a subject on which it is recognized as a leader in Africa.

    “The Ugandan team was only the latest delegation from several Africa countries to visit the Corporation for capacity building.”

    He further added that, “The NDIC previously hosted delegations from the Reserve Bank of Malawi, Reserve Bank of Lesotho, Deposit Protection Fund Board of Kenya, Deposit Insurance Board of Tanzania, Commission Bancairedel’Afrique Centrale (COBAC) of Cameroun, Delegates from Banque Centrale Des Etats De L’ Afrique De L’ Ouest (BCEAO) in Senegal all of whom the NDIC assisted build the capacity for the implementation of the Deposit Insurance System (DIS) in their various jurisdictions.

    “Others include teams from the Central Bank of The Gambia, Bank of Tanzania, the Deposit Protection Corporation of Zimbabwe, and the Ghana Deposit Protection Corporation (GDPC). In September, 2018, the NDIC will also host the African Regional Conference of the International Association of Deposit Insurers (IADI).”

    Five schoolchildren died and 45 others injured in Tanzania

    Five schoolchildren died and 45 others injured after being hit by an explosive in Northwestern Tanzania’s region of Kagera, authorities confirmed on Wednesday.

    Ngara District Commissioner, Michael Mntenjele confirmed the incident.

    He said that one of the pupils of Kihinga primary school, which is located along the border with Burundi, might have naively picked the explosive on his way to school in the morning and the children began playing with it outside their classroom before it exploded.

    Mariagoreti Fredrick, Chief Medical Officer at Rulenge Mission Hospital where the victims were rushed to, said two of the deceased succumbed to injuries while receiving treatment at the facility while three bodies were brought already lifeless along with the injured.

    “We are doing our best to save the lives of patients who have suffered injuries in various parts of the body,’’ she said.

    She added that 13 of the injured were in critical condition and were being attended to at the facility’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

    Mariagoreti said she could not gather clear information on what exactly happened to the children due to their young age but according to what teachers told her, the incident happened in the morning when the pupils were doing their reading test.

    “Teachers told me pupils were outside and they were being called one-by-one to enter the classroom and take the reading test when something exploded outside where they were,’’ she said.

    As for the possible cause of the accident, she said: “The nature of injuries indicated it was explosive, but we are waiting for conclusive results from experts.’’

    Ngara District Chairman, Erick Nkilamachumu said it is believed one of the deceased children picked the explosive on the roadside while going to school and his friends toyed with it as they waited for their turn to do the exam before it burst.

    The Tony Elumelu Foundation ( TEF ), Africa’s leading philanthropy, on Friday announced plan to host 1,300 African Entrepreneurs, Business leaders and Policymakers from 54 countries in Lagos.

    Mrs Parminder Obe, the TEF’s Chief Executive Officer, who made this known at a briefing in Lagos, said the 3rd Annual TEF Entrepreneurship Forum was slated for Oct. 13.

    She said the 2017 invitation had been extended beyond the usual 1,000 Tony Elumelu Entrepreneurs to include selected SMEs, media, hubs, incubators, academia and investors from across Africa.

    “Assembled SMEs will build networks, share knowledge, connect with investors and link with corporate supply chains.

    “Since launching the TEF Entrepreneurship Programme and committing $100 million to empowering 10,000 African entrepreneurs in a decade, we have unleashed our continent’s most potent development force, its entrepreneurs.

    “In just three years, our first 3,000 entrepreneurs have created tens of thousands of jobs and generated considerable wealth.

    “On Oct. 13 and 14, the global entrepreneurship community will gather in Lagos to build a New Africa, a thriving, self-reliant continent capable of replicating the results of our ground-breaking programme.

    “The two-day forum will feature plenary panels, master classes, sector specific networking opportunities and policy-led forums focused on enabling African business growth.

    “This is the first year we have opened the forum up to include the full pan-African entrepreneurship ecosystem.

    “In doing so, we are enabling African SME communities to come together and expand the possibilities for intra-African partnerships.

    “I am looking forward to welcoming our invited policy-makers and investors to join us at the forum, as we empower the next generation of African business leaders,’’ she said.

    Also speaking, Mrs Owen Omogiafo, the TEF’s Chief Operating Officer, said speakers at the forum would include Wale Ayeni of International Finance Corporation, Stephen Kauma, Afrexim Bank and Andre Hue, African Development Bank.

    “Others are Stephen M. Haykin, USAID Nigeria, Heikke Reugger, European Investment Bank and Abdoulaye Mar Dieye, United Nations Development Programme,’’ she said.

    Omogiafo said TEF’s long-term investment in empowering African entrepreneurs was emblematic of Tony Elumelu’s philosophy of Africa Capitalism, which positions Africa’s private sector, as catalysts for social and economic development.

    She said the foundation, which was founded in 2010 by Tony Elumelu, was aimed at empowering a generation of successful pro-profit entrepreneurs who drive Africa’s economic and social transformation.

    According to her, the foundation received 20,000 applications in 2015 from residents of 53 African countries out of which 1,000 applicants were selected, with Nigeria contributing 64 per cent.

    “In 2016, 45,000 applications were received with Nigeria contributing 30 per cent with 1000 selected applicants.

    “Agriculture leads the sectors represented with 26.67 per cent: a great number are into poultry and fish farming.

    “Fashion and ICT followed in second and third with 10 and 8.8 per cent respectively.

    “This year, we received 93,246 applications out of which 1,300 applicants had been selected in 52 African countries with 57.1 per cent from Nigeria for the forum.

    “Entrepreneurs are coming from Kenya. Uganda, Ghana, Tanzania, Cameroon, South Africa, Rwanda, Botswana and Cote d’Ivoire,’’ she said

    Falconets crush Tanzania 6-0

    Nigeria’s Falconets on Sunday gave their compatriots a memorable Independence Anniversary celebration by crushing Tanzania 6-0 in Dar-es-Salaam in the 2018 FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers.

    A brace each by Rasheedat Ajibade and Folashade Ijamilusi and a goal each by Imo Anam and Cynthia Aku steered the Nigerian under-20 women team to a memorable victory.

    The victory gave them a 9-0 aggregate win, after having won the first leg match 3-0 two weeks earlier in Benin.

    First half of this second leg match had ended 4-0 in favour of the Falconets at the Azam Stadium.

    The win took the Falconets to a place in the second round of the African qualifying series.

    Ajibade had also netted a brace in the first leg at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, with the other goal by defender Lilian Tule.

    The two –time World Cup silver medallists will now square up against winners of the fixture between Morocco and Senegal in the second round, set for November 2017.

    France 2018 Qualifiers: Falconets defeat Tanzania 3-0

    The Falconets on Saturday in Benin defeated visiting Tanzania 3-0 in the first round first leg match of the Africa qualifiers for the 2018 FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup in France.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that two goals from striker Rasheedat Ajibade and a goal by defender Lilian Rule removed the steam from the visitors in the match.

    The three goals calmed the nerves of the home fans and supporters, who became restless as the Falconets wasted so many goal scoring chances.

    In the match played at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, the Falconets dominated from the first blast of the referee’s whistle.

    Nigeria first goal came in the 21st minute when Rule was fouled by Tanzanian defender Khadija Mohamed at the edge of the penalty area.

    Rule neatly converted the resultant free-kick, while Ajibade scored Falconets’ second goal in the 59th minutes.

    She scored after dribbling Tanzanian goalkeeper Migomba Gelwa, after a solo run from the centre circle.

    Ajibade made it a brace in the 62nd minute from a tailor-made pass from Sunday Anu.

    The second leg match will take place in Dar es Salaam on Sept. 30.

    The winners on aggregate will tackle the winners of the Morocco/Senegal clash in the second round in November.

    The 9th FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup will be staged in four cities in France from Aug. 7 to Aug. 26, 2018.
