Ope Banwo raises concerns over verdict on Taye Arimoro and Peggy Ovire rift, proffers solution

Popular movie producer and public commentator, Dr, Ope Banwo has expressed concerns about the joint verdict in the conflict between Taye Arimoro and Peggy Ovire on the set of ‘Pieces of Love.’

In a letter addressed to Dr. Queen Ebigieson, President, Association of Movie Producers (AMP) and members of the executive council with the title: Re: Formal Concerns About The Joint Guild Verdict In The Taye Arimoro Vs Peggy Ovire Matter – And Proposals For Urgent Producer-Led Reforms, Banwo highlights seven key areas of concern.

Dr Banwo highlighted the perception of one-sided punishment, lack of condemnation of unlawful restraint, missed opportunities to reinforce producer responsibility, contradiction between ‘not culpable’ and required apologies/undertakings, negative signal to actors, crew and estates about working with producers, exposure of structural gaps – no shared, enforced on-set conduct and safety code and reputational and legal risk for AMP and its members.

However, Banwo, who is also a legal practitioner, business consultant and founder, Aixflix360 and Nollywood Fanatics, proposed seven reforms for AMP to champion and these include:

On-Set Conduct and Safety Code: Develop and publish a clear code of conduct for producers, production managers, and security personnel.

Unlawful Detention: Explicitly outlaw unlawful detention by production teams and impose sanctions for violations.

Mandatory Training: Introduce compulsory training for producers and production managers on law, ethics, and conflict management.

Independent Review Panel: Establish an independent review panel for serious incidents involving AMP members.

Balanced Sanctions: Impose balanced sanctions for all parties involved in on-set violence.

Standard Contracts: Champion standardized contracts with clear clauses on working hours, overtime, and welfare minimums.

Confidential Reporting System: Establish a safe and anonymous reporting system for violence, intimidation, or unsafe practices.

“I reiterate that I write as a committed, relatively new member who loves this industry and has invested heavily in it. My only desire is to see AMP grow in respect, credibility and moral authority, so that when we speak, the entire ecosystem knows that we stand on the side of fairness, safety and best practice,” he said.

In all, Banwo requests that AMP leadership review their role in the joint verdict, consider a more balanced reconsideration of sanctions, and champion the proposed reforms to enhance professionalism and safety in Nollywood.

Taye Arimoro challenges guilds’ suspension, threatens N1bn suit

Actor Taye Arimoro has challenged his suspension by the Directors Guild of Nigeria (DGN), Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), and Association of Movie Producers (AMP) over an on-set altercation with Peggy Ovire.

The incident occurred on the set of the movie “Pieces of Love.”

In a strongly-worded letter, Arimoro’s lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, argued the guilds’ decision is “procedurally improper, legally indefensible, and constitutionally void”.

Key concerns include misidentification, lack of jurisdiction, and procedural flaws.

According to Effiong, the guilds referred to Arimoro as “Taiye Ayimoro” instead of Taiwo Arimoro, and failed to afford him a fair hearing.

Arimoro, a non-member of the guilds, asserted that the disciplinary actions are ultra vires and an unlawful interference with his acting career.

“Our client is not a member of the DGN, AGN, or AMP. These three bodies lack jurisdiction to discipline or regulate him in any manner whatsoever.

“No association is empowered by law to exercise coercive or disciplinary powers over persons who are not its members or beneficiaries of its Constitution.

“Any sanction, directive, or instruction issued against our Client is therefore ultra vires and legally unenforceable”, it reads in part.

The letter cites multiple grounds for objection, including failure to disclose evidence and gross violation of Arimoro’s right to freedom of association.

The actor demands retraction of sanctions, a written apology, and public dissemination within 24 hours or face a N1 billion lawsuit.

“Take notice that if DGN, AGN, and AMP fail, refuse, or neglect to comply with the demands above, our Client has given us a standing instruction to immediately commence legal proceedings against the DGN, AGN and AMP and their respective Presidents, seeking, inter alia, the sum of ₦1,000,000,000.00 (One Billion Naira) in damages”, the statement reads in part.

Effiong stated, “A stitch in time saves nine,” urging the guilds to remedy the injustice and avoid litigation.

Actor Taye Arimoro reacts to AGN suspension over alleged on-set assault

Actor Taye Arimoro has reacted to his indefinite suspension by the industry’s top guilds, labelling their statement as “inaccurate” and vowing to contest the ruling legally.

The controversy surrounds an alleged physical assault on the set of “Pieces of Love” involving producer Peggy Ovire.

Arimoro claimed he was attacked after trying to leave the set when his scheduled call time elapsed.

He alleged that Ovire blocked his vehicle, leading to detention and assault by her team.

Arimoro is demanding N100 million compensation from Ovire, dismissing her account as “grossly misleading”.

Ovire, however, stated that Arimoro was the aggressor.

Following their investigation, the joint body of the Directors Guild of Nigeria (DGN), Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), and the Association of Movie Producers (AMP) mandated Arimoro to, issue a public apology to Ovire and the director, release a corrective video stating the actual sequence of events and completed the remaining scenes under supervised conditions.

Arimoro assured that his legal team is addressing the claims, promising a comprehensive response.

“To be honest, the statement given doesn’t capture the facts of the matter in any way, shape, or form!”

“My management and legal team are aware of this, and I will provide a comprehensive response tomorrow. My legal team is also proceeding with the necessary action to address these unfounded claims,” he wrote.

Taye Arimoro demands N100 million from Peggy Ovire over alleged on-set assault

Actor Taye Arimoro has threatened legal action against his colleague Peggy Ovire, demanding a public apology and N100 million compensation over an alleged assault on a movie set.

The incident reportedly occurred when Taye attempted to leave the set after his contracted working hours had expired but Peggy’s team allegedly blocked his car and deflated the tyres.

Taye shared a viral video showing his injuries, including bleeding gums and lips, and accused Peggy and her crew of physical assault.

However, Peggy denied these allegations, claiming Taye was the aggressor and assaulted two crew members, including her driver, who suffered ear bleeding.

A CCTV footage later surfaced, appearing to contradict Peggy’s account, showing her removing wig and preparing to engage in a fight with Taye.

Taye’s lawyers argue that his rights to personal liberty, movement, and dignity were breached, and he’s seeking damages for emotional trauma, psychological stress, and loss of earnings.

Arimoro captioned the post: “@peggyovire, PRE-ACTION NOTICE. In light of the incident referenced in this correspondence, you have been served. Kindly forward all responses to my solicitors as indicated”.

Peggy has been given a seven-day ultimatum to respond to the allegations or face further legal action.

Drama as Taye Arimoro, Peggy Ovire clash on movie set

Actors Taye Arimoro and Peggy Ovire are embroiled in controversy following a reported physical altercation on a movie set.

Arimoro, who captured the incident via Instagram live video, said the trouble began when he attempted to leave the set after his contract time had elapsed, but was allegedly prevented from doing so by Peggy Ovire and her team.

He claimed that his car was blocked, and was assaulted by Peggy Ovire’s team, resulting in visible injuries to his gum and lips.

However, Peggy Ovire disputed Arimoro’s account, alleging that the actor became aggressive and physically assaulted two crew members when they asked him to complete a few scenes.

“Taye, you beat up two crew members simply because you felt they had no voice – no social media presence, no one to speak for them. They were only begging you to please complete two short scenes so we could wrap the night. Moments later, you went live to record their reaction – leaving out the part where the violence began”.

She claimed that Taye reacted sharply when she approached him to discuss the shoot and later punched the production manager multiple times.

“You reacted sharply when I tried to talk to you, so I decided to give you space. Later, when the Production manager approached you to appeal for more time, you got physical with him. You had punched the Production manager three times, and he was on the floor before the driver came out”, she added.

Peggy further alleged that the situation escalated when Taye’s driver got involved, and her driver was left bleeding from the ear.

She, however, denied blocking Taye’s car or instructing her driver to do so, instead claiming that Taye drove off while she was still beside the vehicle
