Netizens slam Taye Currency over performance at Olubadan coronation

Fuji singer Taye Currency’s performance at the coronation ceremony of Oba Rashidi Ladoja as the new Olubadan of Ibadanland has sparked intense controversy amongst social media users.

The Fuji musician’s lyrics, “were la fi n wo were,” which translates to “we used insanity to cure insanity,” were deemed unbefitting for the royal occasion.

Many Nigerians took to social media to express their outrage, describing the performance as an “embarrassment” to Ibadan indigenes and questioning the decision to invite Taye Currency.

The coronation ceremony, attended by dignitaries such as President Bola Tinubu, Governor Seyi Makinde and several traditional rulers, was meant to be a moment of cultural pride and celebration.

However, Taye Currency’s lyrics overshadowed the occasion, with many expressing disappointment and embarrassment online.

Some critics argued that the organisers were to blame for inviting Taye Currency, stating that other Fuji stars like Saheed Osupa, King Wasiu Ayinde Marshall (K1), or Malaika would have delivered a more fitting performance.

Oba Adetokunbo Tejuosho, the Olu of Kemta Orile in Ogun State, also condemned Taye Currency’s performance, describing it as “disgusting and uncultured” and questioning the choice of the musician for the event.

Social media users were quick to express their disappointment and outrage over Taye Currency’s performance.

“Werey la fi’wo werey na song? Nonsense,” @Frank24net bluntly put it. @olatunbosun006 chimed in, saying the performance was a “total embarrassment to his family” and questioned why such lyrics were sung on a coronation day. @Fortune4me_ola wondered who gave Taye Currency the microphone to sing “this rubbish” during the coronation.

Some users shifted the blame to the organizers, with @OluwaferanmiDan stating it’s “not his fault now; it’s the fault of the organizers that decided to platform someone whose last musical boom was 17 years ago.”

@babasafeez speculated that the choice of Taye Currency might be political, questioning why other Fuji stars like Osupa or K1 weren’t chosen instead.

@fesooyebade summed up the sentiment of many, describing the performance as “an historic disappointment, an embarrassment to Ibadan indigenes at home and in the diaspora.”

They added that the songs were not fitting for the occasion and expressed confidence that many Ibadan musicians could have delivered a better performance.

Taye Currency loses N10m to CBEX

Fuji music icon Taye Currency has shared his painful experience of losing N10 million to Crypto Bridge Exchange (CBEX), a platform he described as an alleged Ponzi scheme.

During a live performance, the singer emotionally recounted how he was lured into the investment by close associates who assured him of high returns.

He explained that the success stories of his band members, especially one Lateef who allegedly turned N200,000 into N600,000, convinced him to invest.

Encouraged by these claims, Currency committed N10 million he had saved with an insurance company into the scheme — only for the funds to disappear without a trace.

Visibly upset, Taye Currency expressed anger toward those who introduced him to the platform and warned them of serious consequences.

He said in songs: “You will hear how CBEX took away over N20 million from me and people close to me.

“On April 1, Sodiq came to my house and said Lateef, the brand manager, had collected some money and also introduced Alaba and one other brother to it. Alaba even used N1.2 million he stole from the stage to invest. Brother Muca also put in his work fee—N500,000. Lateef invested N1.4 million.”

“Lateef said he used N200k to collect N600k. That was what pushed me. I withdrew the money I had saved with insurance, N10m and invested it on April 1, but everything vanished. If they die well, they won’t rest well.”

His experience is part of a larger issue, as CBEX has reportedly defrauded numerous Nigerians with promises of high returns on digital investments.

  • Alao-Akala paid me N99 million for his campaign in 2011 – Taye Currency

Alao-Akala paid me N99 million for his campaign in 2011 – Taye Currency

Prominent Ibadan-based Fuji musician, Taye Adebisi, popularly known as Taye Currency, has recounted how the late former governor of Oyo state, Christopher Alao-Akala, gave him a financial freedom in 2011 by crediting him with a whopping sum of N99 million for his governorship campaign.

Revealing this, Taye Currency disclosed while performing at the annual Oshodi Day event on December 27, 2023.

In 2015, during his campaign for governorship under the Labour Party, Akala’s campaign Director-General, Kola Balogun, mentioned that Akala was referred to as “ATM” by locals due to his generous nature.

Balogun added that Akala’s governance style ensured that his people always had money in their pockets.

Meanwhile, Taye Currency recalled how he challenged Akala about the delayed funds meant for him by those expected to pay them for the campaign rallies done on his behalf.

He said: “I want to share a story of how my life was turned around for good and how I became what I am today. In 2010, I was invited, along with many others, to join the campaign trail for the late Governor Christopher Adebayo Alao-Akala. The show promoter in charge of paying me for singing during the campaign wouldn’t pay me on time. He would often delay my payment, sometimes by up to three days.

“One fortunate day, I was in the late Governor’s residence when he stepped out. I started screaming and shouting that I hadn’t been paid for my show at the campaign and that I wouldn’t be returning to perform on stage anymore.

“Akala asked me to approach him and demanded an explanation for my outburst. I told him I was owed N500,000 and had not been paid yet.

“He was surprised and then called on his First Lady, Mrs. Kemi Alao Akala, instructing her to be in charge of paying me whenever I performed on stage for the rest of the campaign.

“Akala then instructed that N99 million be paid to me straight away for campaigns in the 33 Local Government Areas of the state. That was how I made it. Just like that, I was shocked. After I settled everyone, I still had N60 million left.”

Taye Currency was appointed the Culture Ambassador in the first term of Governor Seyi Makinde because of the active role he played during the governor’s campaign.

His son, Yusuf Adebisi, also won a seat in the Oyo state House of Assembly representing Ibadan South-West Constituency 1.
