  • FCTA teams up with NOA against polio, flood

As part of measures to strengthen the war against poliomyelitis, threat of flood and protect the environment, the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has declared its intention to collaborate and work closely with the National Orientation Agency (NOA).

The FCT Minister Malam Muhammad Bello disclosed this while receiving the FCT Director of the National Orientation Agency who paid him a courtesy visit in his office.

Bello who commended the FCT NOA for their support to the FCT Administration, stressed that the administration requires the services of the agency now more than ever before in sensitising the residents, particularly the Abuja office.

The Minister expressed the Administration’s preparedness to leverage on the very wide network of the NOA in the fight against polio following the warning from experts that FCT is at a high risk of its re-emergence.

He pointed out that the vulnerability of Abuja became so pronounced because of its position as a major hub for travelers as well as a safe haven for people affected by insurgency and militancy across the country.

“We will also collaborate with the NOA in other important areas which include a sustained campaign on the protection of the sanctity of lives, especially that of children against harmful traditions, the environment and preservation of the Abuja Master-plan,” the Minister said.

“As you know more than I do, change and being able to inculcate the spirit of change in individuals and communities is a very difficult task and governance at any level cannot really achieve its full potentials if you do not carry the governed along.”

Bello added: “Over the last one year or so, we’ve tried to strengthen institutions and the capacities of those that man the institutions so that we truly deliver on our mandates. In trying to do so, the greatest challenges I and my team are faced with is, being able to reorient people to do what is right”.

He reiterated that Abuja is the only city in the entire federation that is a creation of law, noting that everything done in Abuja is governed by one set of regulations or the other and these regulations are clearly enunciated and enacted to guide and help us run the city.

Earlier in his address, the NOA Director, Mr. David Manya Dogo, commended the leadership by example style of the Minister, saying, “I dare say you are one of the leaders who is leading by example and we commend you for that.”

The NOA Director said the agency is very active in the campaign to prevent meningitis and polio, pointing out that they have been working at the level of Area Councils to see that people are adequately sensitized on these very important issues.

Other areas of the agency’s activities the Director said include working with the INEC on the continuous voters registration exercise to ensure proper mobilization and sensitization of the citizens, particularly the residents of FCT on how they can partake in the exercise.

He assured the Minister that NOA is working together with the Task Force on the decongestion of the Nyanya-Orozo-Jikwoyi-Karshi road to evolve a strategic communication plan that leverages on dialogue sessions and citizen engagement.

Danladi promises better outing for national teams

A member of the newly constituted Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) technical & development committee,  Isaac Danladi has assured that all the national teams would flourish during their reign.

Danladi and eight other members of the committee were announced on Friday.

The committee is to be chaired by Christopher Green and Ahmed Yusuf Fresh will serve as Vice Chairman. Dr. Emmanuel Ikpeme is the Secretary of the committee.

Other members are Paul Bassey, Mutiu Adepoju, Victor Ikpeba, Garba Lawal and Christain Chukwu.

In a chat with SportingLife, the chairman of Nasarawa United stressed that he and his members will work assiduously to give Nigerians the best they desired.

He praised the former member of the committee led by Felix Anyasi for a good job.

“It is not only the Super Eagles; all the national teams would thrive under this administration. The good thing about the committee is that it is full of tested and trusted people,” Danladi told SportingLife

“Anyasi is a very good person and he has done his best and he has left and if you look, Green has been there before and under him, at least the Super Eagles and other national teams achieved lots of success and there was vibrancy. What happened is that Green is a lawyer and people always believe that lawyers are difficult people to control.

“Apart from that, Fresh is someone who is vibrant and the other members are former Super Eagles players. We are hoping that they will bring their own experience to bear and we will bring our own experience to the table, we will merge it together and see how we can move all the national teams forward,” the chairman of the club owners said.

  • Finding feeders for national football teams

All has not been well with the nation’s football. Whenever Nigerians put their hopes in the teams, they are rewarded with the greatest disappointment.

The teams have not been able to reach and maintain their rightful places on both continental and global stages.

The senior national team, the Super Eagles, are not defending the trophy they won two years ago in South Africa because they could not qualify for the ongoing African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Equatorial Guinea.

This was a rude shock to many Nigerians.

The team, last year, also performed woefully at the 2014 FIFA World Cup championship in Brazil.

While many sports analysts believed that the crisis that engulfed the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) played a great role in the lackluster performances of the national teams in recent times, others felt that the problem has to do with the lack of talented youths to take over from the tiring old legs.

To this latter group, the solution to the poor outings by the national teams is in age-grade football competitions that will discover strong youthful talents to feed the national teams.

Even though there are some existing age-grade football competitions in the country, analysts observed that they have not achieved the desired impact over the years due to their poor packaging.

Also some of the young talents that have been discovered in the existing age-grade competitions have not been allowed to grow.

According to the sports analysts, most of the past national football coaches have not helped matters as they have, during their tenures, largely relied on the big names among the Nigeria’s foreign -based players to prosecute their matches.

So, the opportunity to discover new talents to take over from the tiring legs in the national teams was not really exploited fully.

Despite failing to go far in the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil and unable to qualify for 2015 African Cup of Nations, credit, however, must be given to the Super Eagles coach, Stephen, for giving more young home-based players the opportunity to prove themselves.

Going back to the drawing board and to chart a new course, President Goodluck Jonathan before the commencement of the last Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting in the State House, Abuja, unveiled the President Cup to be competed for by teenagers in the country towards discovering talents.

President Jonathan was decorated at the brief ceremony as the Grand Patron of the Cup by ex-international and football stakeholders, who initiated the football competition.

Among the former players and officials in the delegation were Kanu Nwankwo, Peter Rufai, Taribo West, Emmanuel Babayaro, Garba Lawal, Austin Eguaveon, Shuabu Amodu, James Peters, Kadiri Ikhana, Manu Garba, Patrick Pascal, Anthony Chinasa and Kashimawo Laloko.

Others include Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Gbenga Elegbeleye; President of Nigeria Football Federation, Amaju Pinnick; Darlington Anyanwau; Musa Uja; Auwalu Shekarau, Ike Neliaku; Ambassador Richard Ubohekong, and the Directors-General of Nigeria Television Authority, Shola Omole; and Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, Ladan Salihu.

President Jonathan said: “We remember how you put Nigeria’s name on [the map of] footballing nations…you brought glory and pride to our nation. We are happy with you and of course these efforts to come up with a template, a platform that you will use to build the younger ones so that you can groom them, you serving as their role model so that they would take after you and also take our country to a higher level, is quite commendable.”

“So on behalf of the government of the country, we thank you for your sincere commitment to continue to drive soccer to project football in our country, so that we will continue to be on top.”

He went on: “One thing that all Nigerians know that brought unity to this country is the game of soccer. Whenever you people are playing, those of us who watch do not know the difference between a Moslem and a Christian, we don’t know the difference between a northerner and a southerner or an easterner or a westerner.”

“We also see ourselves as Nigerians and that is the story; you have done very well for this country, we believe the younger ones will emulate you and also do what you have done,” he said

On his part, Sports Minister, Tammy Danagogo, who accompanied the ex-internationals, described the President Cup as a private sector contribution to football development which will hunt for teenage football talents through tournaments and nurture them for the use of national teams and other clubs.

“You will recall that one of the cardinal highlights of our roadmap for the transformation of our sports is grassroots sports and some of the strategies for achieving grassroot sports development are the national schools sports festival, the President’s cup etc.” he said

It is expected that this effort will not only turn around the round-leather game in Nigeria, but ensure that Nigeria maintain its top position at continental and global levels of the game.

With this, it is also hoped that never again would Nigeria as a defending champion be eliminated at the qualifying stages and prevented from featuring at the next competition of any championship.

South East teams record mixed results in Glo League

South Eastern teams suffered mixed results in the Glo Premier League Week 28 matches played yesterday across the country.

Out of the four teams playing in the elite division, only Heartland managed a win while Abia Warriors and Enugu Rangers that were involved in a derby played a goalless draw.  Enyimba lost to Lobi Stars at Katsina Ala.

Two goals, one in each half from Emeka Ogbugh and Clement Bobby in the 44th and 47th minutes earned the Naze Millionaires maximum points at home to sinking Nembe City.

The win catapulted the Owerri side to 40 points from 28 matches.

At the Katsina Ala’s Chief Emmanuel Akume Atongo Stadium, the Makurdi Bombers needed two penalties before subduing Enyimba of Aba under 90 minutes.

Lobi got the first penalty in the 49th minute but  captain Bunde Moses lost it before inspirational goalkeeper, Terkaa Melai stepped out to convert the second in the 65th minute for his sixth goal of the campaign- all from the spot.

The win took Lobi’s points tally to 41 with a game at hand-the inconclusive Week 27 league tie against Nembe City at Omoku.

Barnabas Imenger, Lobi’s Team Manager and a former international of repute, said Enyimba made life difficult for them adding that the People’s Elephant came to Katsina Ala with the sole aim of defending throughout the duration of the game.

Meanwhile, at the Umuahia Township Stadium, it was a fitting birthday to Enugu Rangers Director of Media and Publicity, Foster Chime who added a year and was also part of the Flying Antelopes’ team that secured a point off Abia Warriors.

Rangers have amassed 38 points from 28 games and are on course to stay in the premier league for another season but Abia Warriors despite the loss are still having a season to remember in their first season in the top flight. They have 41 points from 28 matches.
