TechHer expands SGBV emergency response fund to support survivors

The rise in sexual and gender-based violence in Nigeria has reignited calls for urgent and sustained intervention, with Document Our History (DOHS) Cares Foundation’s Femicide Observatory reporting a staggering 240% increase in femicide cases tracked in January 2025.

Chioma Agwuegbo, Executive Director at TechHer and Convener of the now-defunct State of Emergency GBV Movement, remarked in an interview with The Guardian UK on the issue, “Unfortunately, the figures reported by civil society organisations represent merely a fraction of the violence that women and girls endure due to poor documentation and a lack of trust in the system.”

TechHer, in collaboration with Education as a Vaccine (EVA), therefore announces the expansion of its SGBV Emergency Response Fund (ERF). Launched in 2022, the Fund provides emergency resourcing to cater to essential services for survivors, including access to justice, healthcare, and psychosocial support for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and other forms of SGBV.

Sexual and gender-based violence remains a critical public health and social issue, with devastating consequences that disproportionately impact women and girls. The ERF addresses significant gaps in accessing justice, medical care, and psychological support, ensuring survivors receive the comprehensive assistance they need.
Speaking on the utility of the Fund, Toyin Chukwudozie, Executive Director at Education as a Vaccine, said, “We are pleased to plug a crucial gap in the access to justice arc for survivors, providing emergency funding within a 24-48 hour window post approval of their applications for support, as we realise how crucial the hours following abuse are for remediation.”

As the world observes International Women’s Day, Ajuma Drisu, Programmes Lead of the ERF, states that the Fund serves as a rallying call for the government, civil society organisations, and other stakeholders to intensify efforts for women and girls by advocating for and supporting survivors of violence.

She remarked, “Providing adequate support is a crucial step in empowering survivors to escape abusive situations. We invite individuals and organisations nationwide to reach out as needed.”

Beyond the ERF, TechHer remains committed to tackling online gender-based violence through its KURAM platform, which aggregates and responds to technology-facilitated gender-based violence.

Since the launch of KURAM, TechHer’s reporting and response platform for Online Gender-Based Violence (OGBV), the urgency of the issue has become increasingly evident.

Students in tertiary institutions are particularly at risk of OGBV, a concern that was underscored during the 11th Annual All Nigerian University Debate Championship (ANUDC), hosted by Veritas University, Abuja. TechHer engaged with participants on this pressing issue, highlighting the need for immediate action.

TechHer, an organisation advancing social good through technology and advocacy, proudly supported the 2024 edition of the ANUDC as a key partner. The event highlighted the urgent need for digital safety, particularly addressing OGBV and centred university students in these pivotal discussions.

The ANUDC is an annual event that convenes undergraduate students from across Nigeria’s federal, state, and private universities, offering a platform for intellectual engagement through debates and public speaking.

The debate, which focused on societal attitudes and the challenges of regulating social media to tackle Online Gender-Based Violence (OGBV), sparked critical discussions on how digital platforms shape behaviour. It further emphasised the significant impact of collective action to address OGBV both within academic institutions and beyond, making the event another milestone in the fight against OGBV.

Four semi-finalists from the University of Ilorin emerged as champions, each receiving a cash prize of ₦100,000. In addition, the top three public speakers were also awarded for their outstanding performance. Alongside the monetary prizes, all winners were presented with educational resources, including

    TechHer’s customised online safety toolkits.

These toolkits are designed to enhance their understanding of digital violence and equip them with practical strategies for staying safe online, empowering students to navigate the digital world responsibly.

Professor Owoade, President of the ANUDC Council, commended participants’ efforts at the championship, stating, “This event goes beyond intellectual competition; it challenges emerging leaders to engage with critical societal issues. Seeing students tackle topics like OGBV with such determination and insight is inspiring.”

With support from the Digital Defenders Partnership, TechHer remains committed to engaging tertiary institutions in meaningful discussions on becoming active digital bystanders, understanding the far-reaching effects of Online Gender-Based Violence (OGBV), and advancing digital literacy to create safer online environments.

During the ANUDC, TechHer’s interactive sessions prompted students to reflect on their role in combating OGBV and provided them with practical tools to inspire change.

TechHer remains committed to leveraging innovative solutions and strategic partnerships to protect online spaces and shield vulnerable communities from digital threats. Through its engagement in the ANUDC, TechHer continues its mission to address Online Gender-Based Violence (OGBV) and promote digital safety in Nigeria.

By raising awareness and empowering students, the organisation also continues to champion safer online environments. Its participation in the debate reflects a broader effort to harness technology for social good and drive meaningful change in the fight against OGBV.

“As we continue to promote women’s inclusion and participation in tech and STEM, fostering a safe and inclusive online environment remains paramount,” Jemimah Michael, Communications Officer at TechHer, said before adding, “We are proud to support initiatives that educate students on digital safety and empower them to navigate the digital world responsibly.”
