Acquire basic technical skills, women urged

The Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association’s Network of Entrepreneurial Women (NNEW) has urged women in business to acquire technical skills to enable them to compete with their male counterparts.

The President of the association, Mrs Lola Okanlawon, gave this advice at its Sixth Annual General Meeting in Lagos.

The theme of the meeting was Taking your business from start-up to multinational

“Women wish to become established entrepreneurs, but have to work hard for it.

“There is the need to imbibe some basic skills that would move your business to the next level.

“Most women do not take time to read and to excel in business. You have to be versatile. You need to be computer literate, get knowledge on the stock market, customer care and so on.”

She said the association has so far trained more than 400 women in basic entrepreneurial skills within the last one year.

Also speaking at the event, Mrs Florence Seriki, the Chief Executive Officer, Omatek Ltd, urged women to create a balance between business and family.

“When I was breast-feeding, I took my baby as far as Asia for business meetings.

“As an upcoming entrepreneur, don’t expect to become great overnight. It takes a gradual process to build a multinational company.”

Seriki expressed optimism that women could take over most Nigerian businesses by 2017.

No fewer than 1,000 business women were at the event, where products such as smoked fish, handbags, and computer software packages were exhibited.

Technical adviser tasks baseball coaches on training

Gerard Hall, Technical Adviser, Nigeria Baseball and Softball Association, has urged coaches to acquaint themselves with the fundamentals of coaching to be able to harness the abundant talents in the country.

Hall told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on telephone that there was a need for baseball coaches to use the latest trends in the game to upgrade themselves. He said the country’s abundant young talents needed good coaches to bring out the best in them.

“Coaches in Nigeria should get more training to improve their knowledge of coaching in baseball and softball. There are good coaches in the country but they should always ensure that they go for regular training to keep them abreast of the latest development in the sport. This process will prepare them ahead of the task of grooming the numerous budding talents,” he said.

The coach, who supervised the just-concluded camping for U-12 players in preparation for the IBAF U-12 competition in Taipei, China in July, added that he was satisfied with the players’ conduct.

“We will continue to work on the players to get them ready for the competition,” he said.

Keshi to meet NFF’s Technical Committee

The parley between the Nigeria Football Federation(NFF)’s Technical Sub Committee and the Head Coach of the Super Eagles, Stephen Okechukwu Keshi is expected to kick start the nation’s preparation for the next January Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), a top official has revealed.

The Super Eagles were drawn in a Group C comprising the reigning Champions, Chipolopolo of Zambia, the Stallions of Burkina Faso and the Walyas Antelopes of Ethiopia in the draw held in Durban, South Africa on Wednesday.

In a telephone chat with the NFF’s Chief Media Officer, Demola Olajire shortly after the draws he disclosed that all reports on the campsite and preparations of the Eagles for the AFCON were mere rumours as nothing yet has been concluded.

He stressed that there would be a meeting between the NFF’s Technical Sub Committee and the Eagles’ boss in the coming days to chart the way forward for the senior national team ahead of the 2013 Nations Cup.

Olajire said: “Everything is on hold until the Head Coach (Keshi) comes back and until there is a meeting between him and the Technical Sub Committee. The NFF has not decided on anything now. No arrangement has been made on the programme of the Eagles but in days to come they will be made public after their meeting.”

Nigeria is seeking third crown in AFCON tourney after the triumphs at home in 1980 and 1994 in Tunisia where the current Eagles boss was then captain that lifted the cup after a 2-1 win over stubborn Zambia in Tunis.
