Ten Hag excited by Man Utd’s future

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag says he is excited about the club’s future.

Ten Hag had to wait over two weeks for United to decide to retain him after guiding them to FA Cup final victory over Manchester City on 25 May.

On 4 July, following conversations with the Dutchman, the club confirmed they had triggered the additional year option in his contract, which now runs to 2026.

In his first interview since that was announced, Ten Hag told in-house channel MUTV he would not have agreed to extend his deal if he was not “very” excited about the future.

United have made significant structural change since Ineos’ co-ownership was confirmed in December.

Jason Wilcox had already arrived at United before the victory over City, Dan Ashworth has since been installed as sporting director, and Omar Berrada is due to take over as chief executive on 13 July.

Rather than feeling that weakens his position, Ten Hag believes the changes leave the club in a better place.

“The new ownership coming in can help us,” said the 54-year-old.

“We are so pleased that around the football, around the first team, we have a strong structure that will help us in many ways, like in scouting and recruitment and departments of medical and performance.

“They will be so supportive and that will raise the bar.”

Erik ten Hag has signed a new contract with Manchester United to extend his stay at Old Trafford until 2026, the Premier League club said as the Dutchman gets another chance to restore the record 20-times champions to former glories.

There had been speculation he would be sacked after United ended eighth last season — their lowest ever finish in the Premier League — and with British billionaire and INEOS chairman Jim Ratcliffe taking charge of football operations.

A shock victory over champions Manchester City in the FA Cup final, however, earned the 54-year-old Ten Hag a lifeline,

“Looking back at the past two years, we can reflect with pride on two trophies and many examples of progression from where we were when I joined,” he said in a statement.

“We must also be clear that there is still lots of hard work ahead to reach the levels expected of Manchester United, which means challenging for English and European titles.

“In my discussions with the club, we have found complete unity in our vision for reaching those goals, and we are strongly committed to making that journey together.”

Ten Hag’s contract had been set to expire at the end of the 2024-25 season but denying Manchester City a domestic double and qualifying for the Europa League earned him another chance.

“With two trophies in the past two seasons, Erik has reinforced his record as one of the most consistently successful coaches in European football,” the club’s Sporting Director Dan Ashworth said in a statement.

“While the club’s review of last season highlighted areas of improvement, it also reached a clear conclusion that Erik was the best partner for us to work with in driving up standards and outcomes.

“This group of players and staff have already shown they are capable of competing at the top level; now they have to do it more consistently.”

Despite winning two trophies, results and performances have fallen away dramatically despite more than 400 million pounds being spent on new players since Ten Hag took charge.

United struggled early in his first season, but Ten Hag instilled a sense of togetherness that had been missing since Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.

They enjoyed a nine-match winning run in all competitions, lifting the League Cup and finishing third in the Premier League.

The second season was much worse but United’s fan base largely stayed loyal to Ten Hag and sung his name loudly at Wembley in the Cup final as their team produced the best performance of his spell in charge.

Manchester United have triggered a one-year extension in Erik ten Hag’s contract to keep him at the club until 2026.

The Dutchman’s previous deal, which he signed when he was appointed in 2022, was due to expire in 2025.

Ten Hag, who joined United from Ajax, has won two trophies in two years at Old Trafford.

“I am very pleased to have reached agreement with the club to continue working together,” said the 54-year-old.

“Looking back at the past two years, we can reflect with pride on two trophies and many examples of progression from where we were when I joined.”

Ten Hag stressed “we must also be clear that there is still lots of hard work ahead”.

United finished third in the Premier League during Ten Hag’s first season at the club as the Dutchman ended the club’s six-year wait for silverware with victory against Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final.

But the Dutchman’s second season was far more difficult as United finished eighth in the Premier League and were knocked out of the Champions League group stages.

A 2-1 victory against Manchester City in May’s FA Cup final proved vital to Ten Hag keeping his job.

The club, led by co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe following his investment last December, conducted a review of the team’s performance across the season following the victory at Wembley.

The review saw United speak to potential replacements for Ten Hag but it was eventually decided that the Dutchman deserved to keep his job in order to work under a new, improved structure.

Ratcliffe has overhauled the club’s board structure since taking a 27.7% in the club.

Jason Wilcox, Omar Berrada, Sir Dave Brailsford and Dan Ashworth have all joined in senior positions.

“This group of players and staff have already shown they are capable of competing and winning at the top level; now we need to do it more consistently,” said sporting director Ashworth.

“With our strengthened football leadership team now in place, we are looking forward to working hand-in-hand with Erik to achieve our shared ambitions for this football club.”

United are in talks with Ten Hag to restructure his backroom staff.

Former United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, who was PSV Eindhoven manager from 2022-23, is expected to return to Old Trafford as part of a revamped coaching set-up.

Ten Hag blasts Man Utd fans, legends ahead FA Cup final

Erik ten Hag has hit out at Manchester United fans for having ‘no sense of reality’ amid their 11-year title drought in an incendiary interview on the day of the club’s FA Cup final against Manchester City.

The embattled manager is believed to be heading for the exit at Old Trafford regardless of whether his side triumphs at Wembley on Saturday against their crosstown rivals after two season in charge at the Manchester club.

Ten Hag has been defiant in his stance that he remains in the plans of Man United’s new minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his INEOS team since the petrochemicals billionaire took over the running of football operations in February.

But under the Dutchman, the club has faltered to its worst-ever Premier League finsh in eighth, and European football next term is dependent on Saturday’s outcome.

Speaking to Dutch outlet VI, Ten Hag stressed that the club’s aspirations were too high for the reality of its current straits.

‘Manchester United won the league for the last time in 2013, 11 years ago,’ Ten Hag began. ‘But still they expect us to win every game while competing at the top.

‘This club is not ready for that.

‘We were supposed to start building something and we made the first steps last year, but then you find out how big this club is and that nobody is ever satisfied.

‘Within the club people were satisfied, but outside the club there was noise by saying I won only the Carabao Cup, lost the FA Cup Final and became 3rd.”

If critics were to expect much more from Ten Hag’s side, then, the head coach offered that ‘you have no sense of reality,’ as ‘other clubs had a much better squad’ than his United side.

Ten Hag was also ruthlessly realistic about the 2023-24 campaign, adding: ‘Let me be clear. It has been bad. It has been c***.’

But, the manager insisted: ‘Despite everything, we are going to play an FA Cup final.’

Ten Hag went to suggest that his club was an easy target for belligerent pundits, and that this had been a factor in a downturn at the club and negative perception of his role in Man United’s poor form.

Rio Ferdinand, Roy Keane, Gary Neville, and Paul Scholes – all former Man United players – have been vocally critical of the side at various points during the club’s uneven season, and Ten Hag previously hit out at pundits and fans and called for ‘patience’ as the team continues its process under him.

He had stronger words on Saturday, saying that his United side were ‘easy prey’.

‘The pundits in England want to score, they want to show they are worth the money, and for that Manchester United is an easy prey,’ Ten Hag stated.

‘It’s the biggest club in England and possibly in the world. The club is either loved or hated, there is no in-between.

‘So when things go bad, they all start talking and talking with very big words. All this negativity from these so called experts who don’t have the capability to analyse something with facts, but who prefer to attack people to make themselves look better.

‘And these same people were the ones who gave me a pat on the back last year. Last year I was able to walk on water, this year I am the worst manager in the Premier League.’

At the root of the club’s issues have been an enormous amount of injuries, a subject Ten Hag went on to mention.

‘The injuries have been really crazy,’ Ten Hag told the Dutch outlet. ‘Not long ago I had to start my 15th different centre back duo of the season.

‘I have had 33 different defensive lines this season. Sofyan Amrabat had to play left back four times. We have had injuries all over the pitch.

‘Casemiro has been out for a long time. Rasmus Hojlund, the striker we bought, suffered from three njuries and I can keep going on and on. This is the core story of our season.

‘Tyrell Malacia didn’t play a single minute of football this season,’ Ten Hag continued. ‘In fact, he didn’t even spend a single moment out on the training pitch. We signed him as our back-up for Luke Shaw.

On the England defender, Ten Hag offered a stark reminder of the player’s injury woes, stressing: ‘Luke Shaw is the best left back in the world. This guy is so good.

‘But he has suffered a horrible injury at the start of his career and because of this he will never be able to play 60 games per season.’

But the manager was full of plans for the following season, optimistic of his continued presence in the dugout, he said, because of discussions with INEOS themselves.

‘We need to sign an extra striker in the summer,’ Ten Hag said of his decision to reshape the squad during the upcoming transfer window. ‘And if we can sign another central midfielder and a replacement for Varane, things will look good again.

‘If the team remains fit we can try and aim for top four again.’

Ten Hag added that Ratcliffe and Co ‘want to change every thing’, and ‘they want to rebuild with (him)’.

‘This is what they told me directly,’ he stressed. ‘INEOS will change things in the club and certain projects have already started. Carrington will get be completely destroyed, a new training ground will come’.

For all of Ten Hag’s confident zeal, Man United are thought to be considering both Thomas Tuchel and Ipswich’s Kieran McKenna as serious candidates to take over at the club ahead next season.

Away from the subject of Man United, Ten Hag saved a word for his former director of football at Ajax, Marc Overmars.

The former Netherlands international quit his job in Amsterdam in February 2022 after admitting to ‘unacceptable’ behaviour after it emerged within the club that he had sent inappropriate messages and photographs to several women who worked there.

But amid the Dutch giants’ seismic shift away from Eredivisie dominance in recent seasons, Ten Hag offered a full-throated defence of the disgraced club chief.

‘I stand firm that I find it a disgrace the way Marc Overmars has been treated,’ Ten Hag said. ‘The departure of Marc Overmars killed Ajax at the time.

‘And from club perspective it was really stupid to throw him under the bus straight away.

‘Overmars was the binding factor within the club. He didn’t write a single letter on paper, but every outgoing and incoming line was created by him. He was smart, he had strategic insight. When they got rid of him, everything collapsed.’

Overmars went on to take over as director of football at Belgian side Royal Antwerp, but was forced to take a step back in January when his suspension from Dutch football doled out in November 2023 was extended globally

Erik ten Hag has spoken to the media ahead of Manchester United’s Premier League clash against Fulham this weekend.

Dutchman Ten Hag is under increasing at United after Wednesday night’s dismal 3-0 defeat against Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup.

Since the defeat by Newcastle, odds of Ten Hag being the next Premier League manager to be sacked have been slashed, with the likes of Zinedine Zidane and Graham Potter linked to replace him at the Old Trafford helm.

“I have a good squad. I’m convinced about the players in the dressing room. We saw these players last year, they can do a lot better, but that’s up to me to let them play better.”

Ten Hag: No Good Culture At Man Utd Before Now

Erik ten Hag has defended his strong disciplinary measures at Manchester United after a turbulent fortnight, with the Dutchman saying there was “no good culture” at the club before he arrived last year.

Since United last played against Arsenal on September 3, Jadon Sancho has been told to train away from the first team following his public outburst against Ten Hag, while Antony has delayed his return to training following the international break amid allegations of assault.

In his press conference before United face Brighton on Saturday, Ten Hag highlighted the importance of managing the different characters in the squad and says nobody has been harshly punished for just one mistake.

“It’s about team construction, the group dynamic,” he said. “But it’s about the team, the team is above everything else.

“In that team, anyone plays their role and anyone is different. There are different characters and you have to manage those characters. But the team is always above everything else.

“The club asked me, because there was no good culture before I entered last season, to set some standards. So it’s my job to control the standards. Of course, it’s never been someone making one mistake, it’s a whole process before you come to a certain outcome about strict lines. Staff, players, or whoever, if there is a structure to cross lines, you have to be strong, absolutely.”

Sancho’s and Antony’s absences mean United have a lack of options on the right wing. Alejandro Garnacho, Facundo Pellistri and Marcus Rashford are the most recognised wide options that remain, while Bruno Fernandes can also play off the left.

“The squad is strong, in good spirit, good mood and we go into the game,” Ten Hag said.

“They are very good. You have sometimes setbacks in seasons, players are injured or for other reasons not available. So you construct a squad. Those who are available, are motivated.”

‘Maguire treatment is crazy – he has to block it out’

Ten Hag also jumped to the defence of under-fire defender Harry Maguire, who endured a difficult last week with England.

The centre-back was jeered at every touch in Tuesday night’s friendly win over Scotland before scoring a second-half own goal. England manager Gareth Southgate blamed “people in our own country” for the treatment of Maguire, which he described as an “absolute joke”.

Maguire, who was jeered in a similar fashion by Arsenal fans in his last Premier League outing, says he can handle the heat, but his mother came out on social media to say the treatment went beyond football.

Asked about Maguire’s treatment, Ten Hag said: “I have said many times, it’s not respectful. He doesn’t deserve it. It’s crazy but it’s how it works. Harry has to block this by performances.

“If you see his career, it’s a great career. He has a lot to come, he has to block it by good performances.”
