This season the tournaments of the Grand Slam series were quite intriguing. This is particularly true for the women half of the championships, where every time a different athlete won the title, and a whole number of players were real contenders for the victory. Serena Williams who could have won both Wimbledon and the US Open is back; however, the American lost in the finals of both tournaments.

Novak Djokovic is a great example of how to rise from the ashes. Many experts have already pensioned the Serbian tennis player off and did not see him as a real contender for winning the major tournaments. However, he managed to shame the critics, and did it twice. Unlike Serena Williams, Novak succeeded at both Wimbledon and the US Open finals, so he is back to the elite of world tennis.

  • Serena to miss out on seeding as French Open follows rankings

Former Tennis World number one, Serena Williams will not be seeded at this year’s French Open, according to the organisers of the May 27-June 10 clay court grand slam.

Williams, a three-time champion at Roland Garros, discovered she was pregnant after winning the 2017 Australian Open and following her return from maternity leave in March, the American suffered early defeats in Indian Wells and Miami.

The 36-year-old subsequently withdrew from Madrid and Rome clay court events and the 23-times grand slam champion has seen her world ranking tumble to number 453.

“This year again, tournament officials will establish the list and ranking of the women’s seeds based on the WTA ranking,” the French Tennis Federation told The Associated Press.

“Consequently, (the seeds) will reflect this week’s world ranking,” the organisers added.

Williams, who gave birth to daughter Alexis last September, can compete at Roland Garros under the WTA’s special ranking rule.

The rule allows players returning from a long spell out to use their ranking at the start of their absence.

  • Pregnant Serena Williams still owns the tennis court

Welcome to Mothership: Parenting stories you actually want to read, whether you’re thinking about or passing on kids, from egg-freezing to taking home baby and beyond. Because motherhood is a big if — not when — and it’s time we talked about it that way.

Seven months into her pregnancy, Serena Williams’ backhand is still on fire. The tennis champ — who won the Australian Open in January returned to the top of the WTA rankings the week after news of her pregnancy broke in April — may be sitting out the year professionally. But the 28-week-pregnant athlete is by no means staying off the court, as her Instagram feed proved, when Williams posted a video of herself playing tennis as fiercely as ever.

A little insight into the 35-year-old tennis champ’s built-in doubles partner: According to the doctors on the BabyCenter Medical Advisory Board, Williams’ little bun currently resembles a large eggplant (their comparison, not ours), weighing in at a little over 2 lbs and measures nearly 15 inches.

Williams has been sharing snapshots of her pregnancy on social media since the middle of April, when she unintentionally announced announced she was expecting her first child with fiancé Alexis Ohanian in a very 2017 way: via Snapchat. On April 19, the 23-time Grand Slam winner shared a selfie in a yellow swimsuit captioned “20 weeks.”

A week later, Williams, who is waiting to find out the sex of her baby, confessed in an interview with Gayle King that she had not mean to share her big news with the world quite yet.

“Well, actually it was an accident,” she told King at the 2017 TED Talks conference in Vancouver. “I was on vacation just taking some time for myself and I have this thing where I’ve been checking my status and taking pictures every week to see how far along I’m going,” Williams explained. “I didn’t tell a lot of people to be quite honest and I’d been saving it.”

She continued: “Every week I just take a picture and save it and I’ve been so good about it and this was the one time I slipped, but it’s okay.” She added, “On social media, you press the wrong button and… 30 minutes later I missed four calls and I’m like, ‘That’s weird.’ But it was a good moment. I was only going to wait five or six more days [to tell people].”

Either way, it seems likely that her and fiancé Alexis Ohanian’s baby will be born ready to play.

While Williams is busy embracing the experience of being pregnant, Ohanian is nothing but excited too.

“What am I looking forward to? I’m looking forward to this being my greatest creation,” he said in a new interview with The Cut. He went on to explain that while co-founding Reddit has been a major accomplishment, becoming a father “is everything, this is family.”

  • TENNIS FOUR-MIDABLE RETURNEES

    TENNIS FOUR-MIDABLE RETURNEES

    Federer, Sharapova,
    Serena, Kyrgios to be
    back and better in 2017

If 2016 was a season of memorable firsts in tennis, call 2017 the year of the comeback. Roger Federer, Maria Sharapova, Serena Williams and Nick Kyrgios — and there are more — are among those returning to the circuit after being sidelined for differing reasons.

If he stays healthy — and that’s a big ‘if,’ considering he was hit by knee and back injuries last year while also suffering from illness — the 17-time grand slam winner figures to re-enter the top 10 despite his advanced tennis age of 35. He was, don’t forget, ranked third in July just before deciding to skip the rest of 2016 to rehabilitate his knee.

Federer was due to make a high-profile comeback earlier this month in the exhibition IPTL but didn’t play due to, as the struggling Asian-based league put it, the “current economic climate in India and uncertainty of spending money.”

He’ll take to the court in the first week of January at the Hopman Cup, a team event in Perth.

Later, if Federer does end his four-year title drought at majors, he would become the second oldest man to win a grand slam in the Open Era, behind Ken Rosewall.

Wimbledon remains the most likely venue, given it has been Federer’s most successful major with seven titles.

Sharapova is scheduled to return at the end of April, at which time the five-time grand slam winner — and for most of the last decade the richest female athlete in the world — would have served her 15-month suspension for testing positive for meldonium.

The head of the WTA, Steve Simon, says he will welcome her back, but how will the fans and her fellow players respond?

The locker room may be icier.

WTA Finals winner Dominika Cibulkova, shortly after Sharapova admitted to the failed drug test, labeled her “unlikeable, arrogant, conceited and cold.”

Doubles grand slam winner Kristina Mladenovic claimed that Sharapova “wasn’t really nice nor polite.” Sharapova’s Fed Cup teammates Elena Vesnina and Svetlana Kuznetsova have defended her, though.

Could Sharapova win a grand slam? Don’t count her out, especially if Williams isn’t in her way. Sharapova’s motivation is bound to be soaring.

    What will Kyrgios do next?

It’s extremely rare for the ATP to sanction one of its own players but the men’s tour has done it two seasons in a row to Nick Kyrgios. Hence the “bad boy” tag.

After Kyrgios directed a lewd on-court sledge at Stan Wawrinka and his girlfriend in 2015, the ATP fined him $10,000 and handed him a suspended ban; then this October he was suspended for eight weeks — through the middle of January — and fined more than $40,000 for not trying in a match at the Shanghai Masters.

Currently without a coach, the likes of eight-time grand slam champion Jimmy Connors and Kyrgios’ fellow Aussie, former Wimbledon finalist Mark Philippoussis, have offered to work with the 21-year-old, but just how much motivation Kyrgios has to make changes remains to be seen.

He told the New York Times in August that he planned to retire by 27 and has often claimed he likes basketball much more than tennis.

    Serena’s quest for No. 23

Given her age — 35 like Federer — that may be optimistic, but odds are that the American will edge ahead of Graf, who also holds 22 majors to share the Open Era record: Williams has won a major in each of the past five seasons.

  • Team Offikwu win NCC Tennis League Cup

Kaduna based Team Offikwu Sunday in Lagos completed their fairy tale run by beating defending champions Team Tombim 4-2 to clinch the 2016 NCC Tennis League Cup.

In a tight but exciting tie played at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club and watched by His Excellency, former Vice President, Alex Ekwueme GCON and the Minister of Youth and Sports, Solomon Dalung, Team Offikwu took the two reverse singles to put the tie beyond the reach of defending champions.

The team which debuted this year, had recovered from 2 -0 down Saturday to level the tie 2 -2 and on Sunday the young team took the two reverse singles to make the last mixed doubles match inconsequential.

Sylvester Emmanuel, the arrow head of the “comeback kids” once again proved to be the match winner when he beat national champion, Moses Michael, 4-6, 7-6, 6-4 in what proved to be the final match.  Albert Bicom had earlier beaten Emmanuel Paul 6-4, 6-4.

In his remarks, Dalung praised the level of organisation of the competition saying the success of the NCC Tennis League is a testimony that sports in Nigeria is better off being private sector driven.

“The competition was taken to all the zones of the Federation, offered very huge prize monies which made several young men and women millionaires with no kobo coming from government. This is a good example for the Sports Federations to follow.” Dalung said

Sir Alex Ekwueme who expressed delight that Nduka Odizor,” the Duke” was at the finals, expressed delight with the level of play and organization.

“It was a very exciting event and I thoroughly enjoyed the matches. If this competition is sustained Nigeria should be able to produce world beaters in the very near future.” The former Vice President who still plays and follows tennis at the world level passionately, said.

Team Offikwu got N7 million while runners-up Team Tombim got N5 million. Team Civil Defence winners of the third place concluded Friday went home with N4 million while the fourth place team, Team FCT got N2 million.

The competition was organized by the International Tennis Academy.
