  • Boko Haram: NAF Jets destroys meeting venue, Kill insurgents

The Nigeria Air Force (NAF) disclosed on Monday that Boko Haram meeting place at Jabullam in Borno state has been destroyed with air strikes.

The Spokesman of the NAF, Air Commodore Ibikunle Daramola said in a statement that the strikes were conducted through the Air Task Force of Operation Lafiya Dole after an intelligence report had established the presence of the terrorists in the buildings.

Air Commodore Daramola also said some terrorists were killed during the air strikes.

The statement reads: ” The Air Task Force (ATF) of Operation LAFIYA DOLE has destroyed a Boko Haram Terrorist (BHT) meeting venue at Jabullam in Northern Borno State.

“The attack was carried out on 28 September 2018 following credible human intelligence reports indicating that some buildings within the settlement were being used for meetings attended by BHT leaders.

“Accordingly, following confirmatory Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions which identified the target building and surrounding structures, the ATF detailed a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Alpha Jet aircraft, which attacked the location and recorded direct hits on the target leading to the obliteration of the building and neutralization of the BHT occupants. ”

“The NAF, working in concert with surface forces, will sustain the momentum of operations with a view to destroying remnants of the terrorists in the fringes of Lake Chad and other areas in Northern Borno”.

  • A nice terrorist

    A nice terrorist

Believe it or not, there are terrorists who are not terrible. Among such unbelievable terrorists is Abu Musab Al-Barnawi, who leads a faction of the Islamist terrorist group Boko Haram, according to someone who claims to know.

It is interesting that human rights activist Aisha Wakil paid tribute to Al-Barnawi when she spoke about the astonishing abduction of over 100 schoolgirls by Boko Haram from the Government Girls’ Science and Technical College (GGSTC), Dapchi, Yobe State, on February 19. Wakil, popularly known as Mama Boko Haram, is believed to have a rapport with the leadership of the group. She has been credited with helping the presidency to negotiate the release of persons kidnapped by Boko Haram in the past. She was a member of the Presidential Committee on Dialogue and Peaceful Resolution of Security Challenges in the North formed by former President Goodluck Jonathan.

After she made a public plea for the release of the Dapchi schoolgirls, Wakil said the Al-Barnawi-led group contacted her: “They are even the ones that called me and said Mama, we heard what you have said and told me that they are with the girls and they are going to release them. I begged of them and said please let this not be another 1,000-plus days of Chibok girls, and they laughed and said no. I asked them where I can come and stay with them (girls) for two days, but they did not say anything.”

She added: “I can assure Nigerians that so far they are with my son, Habib, and his friends; Habib is a nice guy, he is a very nice boy. He will not harm them, he will not touch them, and he will not kill them. He is going to listen to us, and so far, he indicated interest that he loves peace. And I love them for that and believe what they said on this. They will definitely give us the girls. All I am begging Nigerians is to calm down, be prayerful, everything will be over.”  Habib might be “a nice guy…a very nice boy.” But he is also a terrorist, which means that he is mean.

Clearly, the latest evil by Boko Haram terrorists shows that Islamist terrorism is alive and well despite contrary claims by the country’s military authorities. The Dapchi attack happened after Chief of Army Staff Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai restated his order to troops to capture Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau dead or alive.  It is noteworthy that in 2017 the army chief gave his men a 40-day ultimatum to capture Shekau, and the army recently offered a N3 million reward for information on the elusive Shekau.

Buratai was quoted as saying when he visited troops at Camp Zairo in the Sambisa Forest, which had served as headquarters of the terrorists before the military seized the camp in December 2016: “Let me say congratulations. But we must move across to wherever this criminal, Shekau, is and catch him…I want you to get him…You all know these criminals are still on the run; these guys are on the run, you must make sure that you get them wherever they are around this area…You must not allow them to escape. Every day, you must go on patrol, lay ambush for them and you go on raids.”

A little less talk and a lot more action are needed as the Dapchi abduction compounded the still unresolved Chibok schoolgirls’ kidnapping in Borno State in April 2014.  Many of the Chibok captives are still in captivity.

It is disturbing that the terrorists were able to carry out the Dapchi attack and kidnap over 100 schoolgirls. It calls into question the effectiveness of anti-terrorism troops in the region.  The northeastern states of Borno and Yobe have been vulnerable to Boko Haram attacks since the insurgency started in 2009, meaning that there was always a possibility the terrorists would strike again like they did in Chibok as long as they had not been defeated. Indeed, the Dapchi incident has exposed the overconfidence of the authorities that the worst is over.

With the Al-Barnawi faction claiming responsibility for the Dapchi abduction, it remains to be seen whether the story would be different from the Chibok kidnapping attributed to Shekau’s leadership. The factionalisation of Boko Haram will make it harder to fight the group because it means that the anti-terror war will have to be fought against factions. Buratai wants Shekau captured. He should want Al-Barnawi captured too.

Abubakar Shekau was among the “The World’s Most Influential People” listed by TIME in 2015. The identified influencers in the 2015 TIME 100 were diverse enough to include the anti-hero. The TIME portrait said:  “The citizens of Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country, know Abubakar Shekau all too well: he is the most violent killer their country has ever seen.”  Shekau’s terrifying profile was worsened by his group’s outrageous seizure of more than 200 Chibok schoolgirls.

Shekau has been reported dead, or more specifically, reported killed, on at least two occasions; and there is speculation that Shekau may have become “a brand name” for whoever is the leader of Boko Haram.

Before the TIME ranking, an international think tank, the Project for the Study of the 21st Century, said the Boko Haram insurgency was the fourth deadliest conflict in the world in 2014 and was responsible for 11, 529 deaths.  The think tank added that the figure of fatalities could be underestimated.

Al-Barnawi, reportedly in his twenties, is the first son of the late founder of Boko Haram, Mohammed Yusuf, who died in police custody in 2009 following a military operation against the group in Borno State, which further radicalised it. In August 2016, the extremist militant group, ISIS,   appointed Al-Barnawi as the head of Boko Haram, a recognition which was rejected by Shekau.

A revealing profile of the actor at the centre of the Dapchi abduction says: “Little is known about Abu Mus’ab al-Barnawi, who appeared in a Boko Haram video in January 2015 as the group’s spokesman…He wore a turban and his face was blurred out and it was filmed as a sit-down studio interview… Barnawi pulled no punches, warning that towns which resisted Boko Haram in its mission to create an Islamic state would be flattened… He also spoke of being against democracy and foreign education.”

This is not a portrait of the terrorist as a nice man.

Greece arrests suspected Islamic State terrorist

Greek authorities on Friday said they had arrested a Syrian man suspected to be member of the Islamic State terrorist organisation.

Police said that they found incriminating data, videos and photographs, including scenes of executions, on his mobile phone.

He has reportedly confessed to being a member of Islamic State.

The 32-year-old, who arrived illegally with his wife and two children on the island Leros in June 2016 after traveling from Turkey, was arrested on Thursday.

The family moved through several refugee camps after their arrival, planning to continue further north to Europe.

Police became aware of the suspect after his wife filed a report alleging violence against their children.

The man is due to appear in front of prosecutors on Saturday.

Report says authorities are still checking the suspect’s background prior to his arrival in Europe.

  • IPOB: ‘Kanu must be declared a terrorist’

IPOB: ‘Kanu must be declared a terrorist’

The Embassy of the United States of America (U.S.A) in Nigeria and its spokesman Russel Brooks have been dragged before a Federal High court sitting in Abuja over the comments and the stand of the US government on the Indigenous People of Biafra, when it was proscribed by the Nigerian Government last month.

The Federal Government last month secured an ordered of the court proscribing IPOB as a terrorist organisation.

But the U.S. Embassy, through its spokesman said IPOB is not a terrorist organisation under US laws.

In the suit, dated and filed 11th October,2017, the plaintiff, Nze Charles Ugwu, through his lawyer, Simon Kanshio, Esq. UGWU claimed that Nigerian laws are not inferior to laws of other countries and that the statement by the US Spokesman was to undermine the sovereignty of the Nigerian state which is anchored on its constitution.

He wants the court to compel the spokesman to withdraw his statement and declare the embassy as a promoter of terrorists’ activities in line with the Terrorism Act.

But the plaintiff asked the court to determine the following terms

“Whether by a true interpretation of sections 1, 4 and 5 of the Terrorism (Prevention) (Amendment) Act, 2013 and the United Nations Convention on Terrorism the 1st Defendant’s statement endorsing the proscribed terrorist group named Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) does not amount to promoting terrorism in Nigeria?

“Whether the United States of America represented in Nigeria through the second Defendant is no longer obligated to be bound by the United Nation Convention on Terrorism which the United States of America signed and ratified?

“Whether the third Defendant as the Chief Law Officer of the Federation is not duty bound under the Terrorism (Prevention) (Amendment) Act, 2013 to advise President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR to declare the 1st Defendant a persona non grata for supporting the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) a proscribed terrorist group, thereby promoting terrorism in Nigeria?

He also prayed the court for the following reliefs:

“A declaration that by true interpretation of Sections 1, 4 and 5 of the Terrorism (Prevention) (Amendment) Act, 2013 and the United Nations Convention on Terrorism the statement of the 1st Defendant from the office of the 2nd Defendant endorsing the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), an organization proscribed and labelled as a terrorist group by a Nigerian court presided over by Honourable Justice Abdul Adamu Kafarati on 19th September, 2017 is tantamount to supporting and inciting terrorism and violence in Nigeria.

“A declaration that the 1st and 2nd Defendants representing the United States of America in Nigeria are under absolute obligation to obey Nigerian laws both statutory and judicial so far as they are within the territory of Nigeria irrespective of their personal opinions, perceptions or ideologies.

“An order compelling the 1st and 2nd Defendants to withdraw their endorsement of the terrorist group named Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) within Seven (7) days of delivery of judgment in this case.

“An order directing the first defendant to apologise to the Federal Government of Nigeria in 10 national dailies upon delivery of judgment in this case as his statement endorsing the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), despite the judgment of the court proscribing them as a terrorist group, is an affront to the Judiciary with the attendant effect of undermining the sovereignty of the Nigerian State.

“The plaintiff, an indigene of Enugu State but resident in Kano State, in an affidavit in support of the suit said Kanu and his fellow members of IPOB went about his so called freedom agitation in a violent manner which has led to killing of hundreds of persons and destruction of properties worth billions of naira within the last two years, thus necessitating the arrest of Kanu and some of his men.

  • South East legislators to FG: Don’t brand IPOB a terrorist organization

South East legislators to FG: Don’t brand IPOB a terrorist organization

The South East National Assembly caucus has asked the Federal Government to reconsider its classification of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) as a terrorist organization.

The caucus also asked IPOB to suspend its activities to allow members of the caucus to engage their colleagues at the National Assembly to address issues of concern to members of the group and people of the zone.

The caucus said that it resolved to reject the branding of any organization terrorist without cause or following due process.

It insisted that their position became necessary because of the implication of such branding to innocent citizens who might be affected by such branding.

Besides, it said that such branding would foreclose any dialogue that would lead to a peaceful resolutions of issues at stake.

This is contained in a communiqués issues after a meeting of the caucus in Abuja.

The meeting held in the Apo Legislative quarters of a principal officer of the National Assembly was said to have last till the wee hours of yesterday.

A source said that members of the caucus used the opportunity of the meeting to review happenings in the South East especially since the deployment of soldiers to the area.

The meeting, the source said, became necessary “so that we can review issues, take position and articulate the way forward.”

The communiqué signed by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, Chairman Senate South East Caucus and Hon. Chukwuka Onyema, Chairman, House of Representatives South East Caucus, read in part:

“Rising from a meeting of National Assembly Caucus of the South East geo political zone of the country, the following resolutions were reached.

“We call on IPOB to suspend all its activities as we engage our colleagues in the National Assembly and work with them in addressing all issues of concern to IPOB in particular, and the entire people of the South East in general.

“We appreciate the efforts of the South East governors and the leadership of Ohaneze Ndigbo in the handling of the agitations in the South East with regards to the confrontation of the military with IPOB, especially in Abia State.

“We condemn all acts of terrorism. In the case of IPOB, we reject the branding of any organization in Nigeria as terrorist without cause or following due process where such cause exists. We take this position because of the implication of such branding to innocent citizens from the area who may be affected by the consequences.

“The branding, we believe, will foreclose any possible dialogue that will bring about a peaceful end to the activities of such group.

“We call on the leadership of Nigeria to look into the problems that feeds the never ending agitation by the youths of the South East and other geo-political zones in the country.

“We condemn the use of hate speeches and remarks by any body as the dignity of person must be respected at all times, even while dissenting on any issue.

“We affirm our support for unity of Nigeria anchored on justice, equity and fair treatment to all parts of the country.”

  • Army did not declare IPOB terrorist organisation- Buratai

Army did not declare IPOB terrorist organisation- Buratai

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Tukur Buratai on Monday evening stated that the Defence Headquarters did not declare the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB a terrorist organization in the country.

Speaking during the official launch of Operation Python Dance II in Abakaliki, the Army Chief who argued that what the Defence Headquarters did was a pronouncement on IPOB added that the statement of the military gave room for the right steps to be taken on the matter.

According to Buratai, the action of the Federal government concerning IPOB was right and that the military did not over step its bound towards the protection of lives and properties in the country.

You have to get it very clear. First of all, what the Defence Headquarters did was to make pronouncement. It wasn’t a declaration per se. But this has given room for the right step to be taken. I think the government is doing the right thing.

“It is not that we are overstepping our bounds. We are still within the limits. And I ensure you that what the military said was to set the ball rolling and to bring the awareness to the public that this is what this organization is all about. I’m happy that the government has done the right thing right now.”

General Tukur Buratai further assured the people of the Southeast that the Army will abide by the rule of law and rules of engagement in carrying out the Exercise Egwu Eke II which kicked off on Saturday in the region.

Also during a courtesy to Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi state who was represented by his Deputy, Dr. Kelechi Igwe, the Chief of Army Staff noted that the exercise was targeted at improving the security situation of the zone which according to him, was very strategic to the security of the country.

According to him the exercise will help to bring about the much needed peace and security and also be used to train the Military in basic internal security.

“They army have taken into cognizance the security of the people in deployment of it’s personnel for the operation”.

He said the army in carrying out the operation will liaise and work with other security agencies in the region.

“The army is very sensitive to the cultural norms of the people and will abide by all the rules of engagement and code of conduct that have been laid down which is quite in tandem with the Constitution,” he said.

According to him, some of the activities of the exercise will include Patrols, indoor battle exercises, Civil-Military cooperation activities like medical outreach, sanitation, donation of books to schools etc.

He therefore appealed for understanding as it is just an exercise to help improve security of lives and property within the zone.

Governor Umahi promised that the people of the state will cooperate with the army throughout the duration of the exercise.

He noted that the first edition of the operation last year was peaceful and successful and urged the military to carry out the exercise with high sense of discipline that the Nigerian Military is known for.

He urged the Military to pay more attention to the state’s border with Cross River while carrying out the exercise which he said have been decimated by boundary clashes.

  • Only courts can pronounce a group terrorist organisation – IPOB, lawyer

Only courts can pronounce a group terrorist organisation – IPOB, lawyer

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) said yesterday that its declaration as a terrorist organisation by  the Defence Headquarters was a clear breach  of the Terrorism (Prevention) Act of 2011.

The DHQ, on Friday, pronounced IPOB a ‘militant terrorist organisation’ in Nigeria for allegedly “clandestinely and actively terrorizing the general public.”

Major-General John Enenche, Director, Defence Information (DDI), listed IPOB’s  acts of terrorism as: the formation of a Biafra Secret Service, claimed formation of Biafra National Guard, unauthorized blocking of public access roads and extortion of money from innocent civilians at illegal road blocks.

But IPOB, in a statement yesterday, faulted the step taken by the DHQ, citing Section 2 of the Terrorism (Prevention) Act of 2011.

It argued that the Section stipulates that “only a judge can declare an organisation proscribed based on proven case of acts of terrorism and such case will be presented to the judge through an application made by the attorney-general or the National Security Adviser or the Inspector General of Police with the approval of the president. The judge’s declaration will thereafter be gazetted.”

It then posed the following questions: “Which judge did the DDI make such application to and was it approved by the president prior to submitting the application?

“Where is the approval given to the DDI by the judge? When and where was the Judge’s declaration gazetted?”

It said: “In particular, this deceitful act is a violation and interference into the judicial arm of government and it is an overreach. It is also a deliberate act in contempt of a subsisting ruling in a competent court of law.

“IPOB, whether led by Nnamdi Kanu or led by the DOS, is not a terrorist organisation because no court of competent jurisdiction has so declared it. The so-called declaration by Major-General Enenche is null and void and of no effect.”

Besides, IPOB said there is a subsisting court order which says “IPOB is not an unlawful society/organisation.”

It said the order was made in a March 1, 2017 ruling by Justice Binta Murtala-Nyako of the Federal High Court, Abuja.

“Justice Binta Murtala-Nyako gave her judgment having studied the conditions for an organisation to be deemed unlawful as stipulated in section-62 of CAP C38 L.F.N. 2004,” Emma Nmezu and Clifford Iroanya, who identified themselves as spokespersons of IPOB said in the statement.

They added: “Up till this day, that ruling from Justice Binta Murtala-Nyako has not been upturned by any court.”

It asked the military authorities to fire Enenche for issuing the statement.

The IPOB position is shared by the Second Vice President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mr. Monday Ubani.

He said,” I advise that they take a critical look at the dictionary meaning of “terrorism” before they take the decision to declare IPOB as one.

“The second issue and most importantly is that declaring any organisation as a terrorist group must comply with legal and executive procedures absence of which makes a mockery of the declaration.

“I do not think that the present declaration complied strictly with known procedures for declaration. America declared Boko  Haram a terrorist group after due compliance with  processes and procedures.

“Is the President of the country really aware of this declaration? What of the Attorney General of the Federation? Are they all aware?”

“Strenuous and conscious efforts must be made by all parties to stop this brewing conflagration to reduce tension in the polity and pursue peace to a logical conclusion. Development can only thrive in an atmosphere of peace and tranquillity”.

  • Northern youth coalition backs terrorist treatment for hate speech makers

…wants NASS to make laws against violent agitators

Promoters of October 1st quit notice to the Igbos residing in the North, the Coalition of Northern Groups, rose from their review meeting to support Acting President Yemi Osinbajo’s decision that promoters of hate speeches would henceforth be treated as terrorists.

The coalition in a statement signed by its spokesman, Abdul-azeez Suleiman and made available to newsmen in Kaduna on Saturday also called on National Assembly to promulgate laws that will punish all forms of hate speeches in the interest of peace and unity of the country, which has been threatened recently by various groups.

Wrote the coalition, “That we find the all-encompassing address by the Acting President to the National Executive Council highly commendable and statesmanlike and hereby concur with and support the position of the NCS in its totality.

“Specifically, we support and concur with the Acting President’s firm position that henceforth all forms of hate speeches be termed as acts of terror and be dealt with accordingly.

“Importantly too, we support the strong statement of the acting president that the silence of some community leaders in the face of incitive provocations by their kith is responsible for the escalation of the current threats to national security and integration”.

The statement further read, “It should be recalled that in subsequent correspondences, particularly with the acting president and the International community since the ‘Kaduna Declaration’, our coalition has maintained that, the conspiratorial silence of all the Igbo, especially all their political, cultural and religious leaders was responsible for emboldening the unpatriotic and violence-prone actions of the Indigenous Peoples Of Biafra (IPOB) and its leader Nnamdi Kanu.

“It is indeed the concern of the inherent consequences of that implied endorsement of IPOB’s incessant threats of war and genocide by the Igbo leaders and elders that partly informed our pre-emptive decision to include the relocation of the Igbo clause in the ‘Kaduna Declaration’.

“We are happy therefore, that the Nigerian authorities have finally come to the same conclusion and call on all well-meaning and patriotic Nigerians to support and encourage the government in its renewed resolve to deal with warmongering, hate speeches and incitement to violence in all their manifestations everywhere in the country.

“We also call on the National Assembly to initiate the promulgation of a law to criminalise all forms of hate speeches, as well as violent agitations and provide appropriate punishment thereto”, the statement added.

  • ‘Terrorists do not worship God’

    ‘Terrorists do not worship God’

U.S. President Donald Trump has said that it was imperative for young Muslim boys and girls to know that terrorists were not worshipping God, but worshipping death. Trump, who made the appeal at the Arab Islamic American Summit in Saudi Arabia, enjoined young Muslims to grow up free from fear, safe from violence, and innocent of hatred. The U.S. President admonished them that rather than allow themselves
to become terrorists, they should build a new era of prosperity for themselves and their people. According to him, some estimates hold that more than 95 per cent of the victims of terrorism are themselves Muslim.

“Every time a terrorist murders an innocent person, and falsely invokes the name of God, it should be an insult to every person of
faith. “Terrorists do not worship God, they worship death. “Therefore, young Muslim boys and girls should be able to grow up
free from fear, safe from violence, and innocent of hatred,’’ he said.

The U.S. President said that there was currently a humanitarian and security disaster in the Middle East that was spreading across the planet. Trump, who disclosed that few nations were currently being spared of terrorism, said that America had suffered attacks of Sept. 11, the Boston Bombing and killings in San Bernardino and Orlando.

He also said that nations of Europe, Africa, South America, India, Russia, China and Australia, had at one time or the
other, experienced “unspeakable horror’’ from terrorist attacks. Trump described the spate of terrorist attacks across the globe, as “a
battle between barbaric criminals who seek to obliterate human life,
and decent people who seek to protect it’’.

The U.S. President urged Muslim nations to close ranks in putting an
end to activities of terrorists in their countries.

“Terrorism has spread across the world. But the path to peace begins right here, on this ancient soil, in this sacred land. “America is prepared to stand with you, in pursuit of shared interests and common security. But the nations of the Middle East cannot wait for American power to crush this enemy for them.

“The nations of the Middle East will have to decide what kind of future they want for themselves, for their countries, and for their
    children,’’ he added.

  • Four die as suspected terrorist strike near UK Parliament

Four die as suspected terrorist strike near UK Parliament

Four people, including an armed police officer and a man believed to be the attacker, died yesterday in a terrorist incident near the United Kingdom’s (UK’s) Houses of Parliament, Scotland Yard confirmed last night.

One of the victims was among several pedestrians hit by a car on Westminster Bridge, before it crashed.

An officer protecting the Parliament was stabbed by an attacker, who was shot by the police.

At least 20 people were injured, including three other officers.

Acting Deputy Commissioner and head of counter terrorism at the Metropolitan Police, Mark Rowley, said a major terrorist investigation was under way.

He said the attack started shortly before 15:00 GMT when the four-wheel vehicle was driven over Westminster Bridge, hitting and injuring a number of members of the public and the three police officers, who were on their way back from a commendation ceremony.

Mr. Rowley said after the car crashed an ‘Asian’ knifeman “continued the attack and tried to enter Parliament”.

Witnesses say there was what appeared to be a warning shout and then the crack of three or four shots before the attacker fell to the floor.

Foreign Office minister Tobias Ellwood – a former Army officer, whose brother died in the Bali terrorist bombing in 2002 – attempted mouth-to-mouth resuscitation of an injured police officer.

Prime Minister Theresa May was scheduled to chair a meeting of the government’s emergency Cobra committee later.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, a Downing Street spokesman said: “The thoughts of the PM and the government are with those killed and injured in this appalling incident, and with their families.”

Metropolitan Police Federation chairman Ken Marsh said: “We offer our deepest sympathy to the family of the officer who has died. This incident shows the dangers our colleagues face on a daily basis.”

French Prime Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said three French school pupils were among the injured and offered “solidarity with our British friends, and full support” for the wounded students and their families.

The Port of London Authority said a woman was pulled alive from the River Thames, near the bridge and was being treated for serious injuries.

Emergency services treated at least 20 injured people on the bridge, with one woman dead under a bus.

The ‘middle-aged’ attacker, suspected to be an Asian, was then shot by armed officers. He died while being rushed to the hospital.

An intruder, described by witnesses as ‘middle-aged and Asian’, managed to break into the grounds of the Parliament where he fatally stabbed a police officer with two knives.

The policeman died on the spot.

Another witness Jayne Wilkinson said: “We were taking photos of Big Ben and we saw all the people running towards us, and then there was an Asian guy in about his 40s carrying a knife about seven or eight inches long.

‘And then there were three shots fired, and then we crossed the road and looked over. The man was on the floor with blood.

‘He had a lightweight jacket on, dark trousers and a shirt. He was running through those gates, towards Parliament, and the police were chasing him.”

Her partner David Turner added: “There was a stampede of people running out. You saw the people and you thought ‘what the hell is going on’.”

Frazer Clarke, 25, from Burton-on-Trent, said: “We heard a loud bang and screaming and then I noticed some smoke. I thought it was a car crash.

“I looked towards the front gate and people were running, a police officer and a fellow coming to the gate with two knives.

“He was stabbing the police officer with the knives. He was wearing black tracksuit bottoms, a black of grey top and what looked like work boots. The police officer was stumbling and fell on the floor’

Pat McCormack, 21, from Washington in Tyne-on-Wear said: “I saw him stabbing the officer in the back of the head and the back of the neck.

“He was running away but then he collapsed.”

Steve Voake, 55, was walking across the Westminster Bridge and saw at least two bodies lying on the road and one in the water.

“I saw a trainer lying in the road and when I looked more closely I saw that there were a couple of bodies the other side of the road”, he told the Press Association, adding: “And when I looked over the side there was another body lying in the water with blood all around it.”

Passer’s-by action sparks fury AN attempt by a passer-by to take a ‘Selfie’in front of victims of the Westminster terror attack sparked fury yesterday

His actions caused revulsion with people saying they were ‘disgusted’

The passer-by who appeared to take photographs with a ‘selfie stick’ in front of victims of the Westminster terror attack has sparked fury.

At least four people have died when a terrorist brought carnage to central London, mowing down pedestrians on Westminster Bridge and attacking police with knives in the grounds of the Houses of Parliament.

Witnesses said the aftermath was like a scene from a ‘Hollywood disaster movie’.

But photographs of casualties lying on the ground – before they got help – and people taking selfies at the scene have caused revulsion.

Referring to the man posing for a selfie, one said: “Sir, you’re with the selfie stick, you need that shoving up your a***.”

One person said: “Unbelievable, how could someone think that it’s acceptable to do that.”

Parveen Agnihotri commented: “Shame on the people taking selfies rather than helping the injured. Seems like we’ve become a nation of uncaring self promotion.”

Kavita Cooper said: “Touched by the bravery of those that ran towards victims to offer help and support. Disgusted by those taking selfies.”

Another added: “Unbelievable! Some people disgusting! Please track this sick individual down & shame him publicly at the very least!”

One said: “What is wrong with some people man. No brains at all. Muppet.”

It followed similar outrage caused by people posing for selfies following terror attacks elsewhere.

Scotland Yard said the attack, which comes a year to the day after the terrorist atrocities in Brussels, is being treated “as a terrorist incident until we know otherwise.”
