Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has said its airstrikes killed several terrorists and destroyed their vehicles at Dabar Masara, a known terrorist enclave in the Southern Tumbuns of Borno State.

NAF’s spokesperson, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, said in a statement yesterday that the strikes were conducted on December 14, after “credible intelligence” through coordinated intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) missions indicated the presence of a terrorist workshop and sustained movement of armed elements in the areas.

According to Ejodame, prior ISR missions had also indicated terrorist movements in the area, as well as a significant concentration of vehicles concealed under vegetation, which confirmed the location as an active terrorist logistics hub.

He said: “On the day of the operation, further surveillance validated the earlier findings, with terrorists observed manoeuvring within the location and around the identified vehicles.

“Following positive identification and in strict adherence to the Rules of Engagement, the targets were engaged. Post-operation Battle Damage Assessment confirmed that the identified vehicles were destroyed and terrorist elements were neutralised.

“The successful execution of this mission underscores the NAF’s continued commitment to intelligence-driven, precise air operations in support of national efforts to degrade terrorist networks and enhance security across affected regions.”

However, residents of the Mararaba area in Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State have alleged that airstrikes targeting terrorists’ positions in the area killed an unspecified number of civilians.

The residents reportedly said the airstrikes were carried out between 6 a.m. and 4 p.m., killing fishermen and commercial drivers who had gathered at a terminus junction on the road leading to Daban Masara in Kukawa Local Government Area and Badeiri in Marte Local Government Area.

The commercial drivers had reportedly gathered in the area to convey the fish products and fishermen to their destinations, when the strikes hit the area.

Residents reportedly said three people were killed and 10 vehicles destroyed, adding that some of the injured were taken to the General Hospital in Mungono for treatment.

NAF authorities had yet to respond to the development at the time of filing this report.

    • IEDs destroyed

Airstrikes by the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) fighter jets have killed scores of terrorists around the Mandara mountains in Borno State.

The terrorists were bombed while stockpiling logistics and planting Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) around Wajiroko.

Deputy Director of Public Relations and Information, Group Captain Kabiru Ali, announced this in a statement yesterday.

He said the strikes were conducted on March 26, after a “painstaking Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) mission,” which showed the terrorists in their heinous acts.

Ali said: “Surveillance later tracked their movement to a concealed location housing a gun truck, ammunition stockpiles, and fuel reserves.

“In response, the Air Component of Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK) executed multiple waves of air interdiction (AI) missions. The first wave struck the terrorists’ logistics hub, destroying gun trucks and critical supplies. The other followed with sustained rocket and cannon attacks, ensuring the complete annihilation of the terrorist’s assets.

“Later that day, NAF aircraft targeted another terrorist enclave at Chinene in the Mandara Mountains. Intelligence reports indicated that insurgents had relocated there following a previous air raid on Degbewa on March 16.

Overhead reconnaissance confirmed the presence of active structures, prompting the execution of strikes that set terrorist hideouts ablaze. Fleeing insurgents were subsequently engaged and neutralised, further crippling their operational capacity.’’

“Battle Damage Assessment and corroboratory intelligence confirmed the neutralisation of scores of terrorist fighters. The strikes also destroyed four terrorist gun trucks, two Toyota Hilux vehicles, and several makeshift shelters, forcing the insurgents to abandon their positions degrading their operational capabilities.”

As the military continued its offensive operations against adversaries, troops of the Nigerian Army have killed several high-profile terrorist fighters and recovered lethal weapons, including rocket bombs in Borno State.

The army on its X handle on Tuesday, October 1, said the action had further crippled the adversary’s freedom of action.

Giving details of the operation, the army said: “On 29 September 2024, a high-intensity raid was launched on Boko Haram/ISWAP strongholds in Ajiri and Mastari villages of Bama Local Government Area, Borno State. The troops, leveraging superior firepower, decimated four notorious fighters. A meticulous sweep of the area uncovered 2 Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG) bombs, 2 AK-47 magazines, 28 rounds of 7.62mm (special) ammunition, 25 rounds of 7.62x54mm Light Machine Gun ammunition, and a Light Machine Gun Barrel.

“In another encounter at Banki Junction in Bama local government, troops also neutralized another terrorist.”

It said troops of Operation Save Haven, acting on intelligence, conducted a raid operation in Plateau State that led to the capture of two notorious kidnappers, Isah Abdullahi, 24, and Mujahid Musa, 23, in the forested mountains of Panyam.

According to the army, initial investigations reveal the duo’s involvement in a series of violent attacks on villages within Mangu Local Government Area.

Items recovered during the operation, according to the army, include two motorcycles, three mobile phones, and various paraphernalia.

It said troops also apprehended a notorious arms dealer, Kabiru Zaki, in Bukuru town of Jos South Local Government Area, alongside another suspect linked to a recent murder in Brazongo village, Bassa Local Government Area.

On operation in the South East, the army said troops engaged fighters of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra/Eastern Security Network (IPOB/ESN) in a ferocious firefight at Lilu, in Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State, “after the terrorists attempted to ambush the troops with Improvised Explosive Device.”

It said: “Overwhelmed by superior firepower, the militants retreated into the surrounding forests, leaving behind a Closed Circuit Camera and components of Improvised Explosive Devices.

“Additionally, troops responded swiftly to a distress call about the abduction of civilians along the Gurbi-Jibia road in Jibia local government Area of Katsina State. Upon sighting the advancing troops, the terrorists fled, abandoning four injured victims who were immediately rescued by the troops and evacuated for medical attention.”
