Troops repel terrorist drone attacks, retain operational dominance

Troops of Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), a military offensive against Boko Haram splinter groups in the North East, repelled terrorist drone attacks during operations along the Timbuktu Triangle, in Borno State.

The Spokesperson of Operation Hadin Kai, Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, disclosed this in a statement, noting that the operations, supported by the Nigerian Air Force, were conducted on Sunday, January 18.

According to the statement, troops advanced from their harbour area and conducted deliberate, intelligence-led operations across several identified terrorist enclaves including Chilaria, Garin Faruk and Abirma.

It stated that the Air Component of OPHK provided persistent Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) coverage over the axis.

The statement added that the air to ground synergy enabled real-time tracking of terrorist movement, deterred adversary reinforcement, and enhanced the precision and confidence of ground operations.

It said: “At about midday, the advancing troops came under armed drone attacks by the terrorists. Despite this, the troops maintained momentum and continued the offensives. A second attempt in the evening was also decisively repelled, forcing the terrorists to withdraw reaffirming troops’ dominance of the area.”

According to the statement, despite the sustained engagements, troops morale remains high, and fighting efficiency continues to be maintained.

“The general security situation in the area is assessed as calm but unpredictable, with troops remaining vigilant and at a high state of readiness,” it said.

  • No place for terrorists, kidnappers in Kwara, says Abdulrazaq as forest guards end training

No place for terrorists, kidnappers in Kwara, says Abdulrazaq as forest guards end training

About a thousand forest guards had their passing out parade in Kwara State on Saturday ahead of full deployment to curtail the activities of terrorists, kidnappers, and illegal miners, among others.

Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq called the initiative a game changer, which he said would leave the terrorists and kidnappers with the option of either leaving the state or paying a heavy prize.

He commended President Bola Tinubu for “thinking out of the box” to repossess Nigeria’s forest resources, expel all the bad faith actors occupying the forests, and strengthen public safety.

Governor AbdulRazaq also thanked the security forces for their commitment to protect lives, saying a synergy with the new auxiliary forces who were all drawn from local communities will strengthen the campaign to fight terrorists and kidnappers.

“Today opens a new page in our campaign against all forms of terrorism, kidnapping, and opportunist attacks on our people by bad faith actors who exploit our vast territories for evil purposes,” he said at the event in Ilorin.

The event was attended by all the security commanders in the state, cabinet members, council chairpersons, traditional rulers, and heads of federal and state agencies and tertiary institutions.

“The enlistment of armed forest guards to complement the patriotic efforts of our security forces is a game changer in this campaign. It shows very clearly that the government is committed to the mission of ridding our country of all forms of terrorism, banditry, and kidnappings,” the Governor added.

“And the message is very clear: more than ever before, the terrorists now have the option of immediately leaving our state or paying a heavy price.

“Today’s launch of the forest guards simply means that we are going on the offensive because our people deserve their peace as freeborns. We have had enough! Anyone who thinks or acts otherwise is our enemy who will not be spared.

“Distinguished forest guards, you are embarking on a national assignment to protect our people from all criminals in our forests. Working with gallant officers and personnel of the security forces, you are to go all out to flush out the terrorists, restore sanity in our forests, and keep our communities safer than they ever were.

“I commend the President of the Federal Republic for this bold policy response to the security situation in our country and the larger Sahel Region. I thank the leadership of the National Security Adviser for pulling this through. I am also confident that all the security forces will work together with the forest guards to end this menace once and for all.

“More importantly, I urge the people of Kwara State to work with the security forces and the forest guards to flush out the terrorists and make our state uninhabitable for them.

“While the forest guards are auxiliaries under the Office of the National Security Adviser and the Department of State Security, I assure you of our continuous support for this initiative just like we have done throughout your training.

“Working with the ONSA, our plan is to ensure that each local government has at least 200 forest guards who will fortify our forests and work with local vigilantes to protect lives and property.

“I congratulate all the new forest guards. I thank you for agreeing to serve our state, and I reassure you of our continuous support as you embark on this important national security assignment.

“Finally, I thank all the security forces who were involved in the rigorous training programme. You all did so well. God bless you.”

National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, for his part, said the newly trained Forest Guards will be deployed immediately to threatened communities in the pilot states, particularly around forested and ungoverned spaces.

Ribadu said the Presidential Forest Guards initiative is a joint effort between the Federal and State Governments, listing the pilot states to include Adamawa, Borno, Kwara, Kebbi, Niger, Sokoto, and Yobe.

“The mandate of the forest guards is two-fold. First, they are entrusted with guarding our national heritage and charged with protecting, preserving, and sustainably managing our forest ecosystems, watersheds, wildlife, and biodiversity,” he said.

“Second, they serve as a critical force multiplier in our national security architecture, particularly in confronting bandits, insurgents, terrorists, and other criminal elements that are exploiting the vast, ungoverned forest spaces across the country for their heinous crimes.”

Represented by the Assistant Director General for DSS, Femi Shotayo, the NSA added: “Aside from being first responders, these guards are expected to gather actionable human intelligence, support ongoing security operations, and restore state presence where it has long been absent.”

He said the deployment of the guards will be immediate along with payment of salaries and allowances.

Ribadu urged the trainees to abide by their oaths of allegiance to the Nigerian state and to respect human rights, gender rights, and protection of civilians, among other rules of engagement taught at the training.

“The oath of allegiance is not a mere formality; it is a binding pledge of loyalty to the Federal Republic of Nigeria, obedience to lawful authority, and commitment to the protection of lives, property, and the Constitution. By this act, you formally accept the sacred responsibility entrusted to you by the Nigerian state. You are henceforth bound to uphold discipline, professionalism, respect for human rights, and the highest standards of conduct in the execution of your duties,” he said.

Highlights of the event included the display of what the guards have learnt about attack and self-defence and operational capabilities to curtail banditry, kidnapping, cattle rustling, deforestation, and illegal mining.

  • ‘Terrorists’ negotiator Mamu got N50m from criminals’

‘Terrorists’ negotiator Mamu got N50m from criminals’

    • Court plays audio between defendant, terrorists’ leaders

Federal High Court in Abuja heard yesterday how alleged terrorists’ negotiator, Tukur Mamu, was offered N50 million by leader of a terrorists group.

An official of Department of State Services stated this while testifying as sixth prosecution witness in Mamu’s trial for terrorism-related offences.

The witness said: “The second voice that played for five minutes is Shugaba’s, who is leader of a terrorist group, appreciating the defendant’s efforts and asked him to remove N50 million for his use from a ransom amount he was to deliver to them (the terrorists).”

The DSS official identified Shugaba’s voice among others audio conversations, he said, were extracted from Mamu’s mobile device during interrogation after he was arrested in Egypt.

Mamu was arrested on September 7, 2022, by Egyptian security officials at Cairo International Airport, on suspicion of financing Boko Haram terrorism activities.

He was alleged to have convinced the terrorists to discuss ransom with families of hostages of the train attack instead of the Chief of Defence Staff Committee set up by Federal Government for his personal financial gain.

He was said to have been nominated by the terrorists that attacked Abuja-Kaduna bound train in March 2022 which took hostages.

Mamu was alleged to have collected ransoms on behalf of Boko Haram terrorists from families, confirmed the amount and facilitated the delivery of same to the terrorists.

Led in evidence by prosecuting lawyer, David Kaswe, the DSS official told the court that, after Mamu was brought back from Egypt, he submitted his Samsung tablet and two phones to DSS’ officials.

The witness, who said he was part of those who investigated the case, told the court that when the defendant was intercepted in Egypt, he put a call to his in-law,  identified as Mubarak Tinja and directed him to move out his valuables, comprising cash, cars and other items, from his house to a safe location, to avoid detection by security agents.

The sixth prosecution witness added: “The defendant was arrested in Egypt and returned back to Nigeria, where investigators received him.

“A search warrant was duly executed in his property and  office in Kaduna, during which cash, in local and foreign currencies; cars and other valuables were recovered.

“In compliance with his directive to Tinja, and the other dependants in the house, some cars and cash were moved out to various locations.”

The witness said investigators later traced and located some items, including about 300,000 US dollars, seven cars, including Toyota Camry (Muscle); Peugeot 5008, Lexus, Mercedes E350 and Hyundai.

Car documents were tendered by prosecution through the witness, which the court admitted in evidence.

The witness added that when the defendant was brought back,  he “handed his Samsung tablet and two phones to our exhibit keeper, who  sent them to forensic department for forensic analysis.

“The outcome of the analysis, including voice notes between the defendant and terrorists, were part of the content presented to the interrogation team and items recovered from his home.

“He (the defendant) was interviewed, during which content of his phones and other items were presented to him.

“During the interview, the defendant admitted giving instruction to Mubarak to move his valuables from his house. He also admitted communicating with the terrorists, using his voice notes extracted from his two phones and Samsung tablet,” the witness said.

The sixth prosecution witness added that the defendant also admitted owning a pump action gun, which was recovered from his house, which he claimed was duly licensed.

The witness told the court that investigators later discovered that the licence expired in December 2021, nine months before he was arrested.

“In one of the voice notes extracted from the defendant’s phone, the terrorists requested him to teach them how to develop a website and the defendant promised to get back to them in that regard,” the witness said.

The DSS official said about 98 percent of the conversation on the voice notes are in Housa language, some of which were translated to English language because they were too many. The witness said he did the transcription.

Kaswe then applied to render the recorded voice notes stored compact disk plates and the flash drive, which the court admitted, following which about six of the recorded conversations were played in court.

When asked to identify the owners of the voices in the conversations, the witness said: “The last two voices are those of Baba Adamu, who is the spokesperson of the terrorists group.

“The first voice note was the defendant, where he was fixing a date for the delivery of ransom.

The second was …that played for 5 minutes is that of Shugaba, who is the leader of terrorist group, who was appreciating the defendant efforts and asked him to take/ remove N50m for his personal use from a particular ransome amount to be sent to them.

“The last note was Baba Adamu, asking the defendant to help them procure public address system, like speakers,  for their preaching activities and the defendants assured that he would look into their requests.

“Adamu also requested that the defendant teach them how to create a website for their activities.”

The witness added that in the course of investigation, two victims volunteered written statements in which they recounted their experiences.

The DSS official said the victims, a male and female, were no longer available, because they expressed their unwillingness to attend court to testify because of fear and trauma.

The court admitted the statements of the victims, one was written in English by the female victim, while the other written in Hausa by the male victim was translated into English.

The court admitted in evidence eight statements made to investigators by the defendants and video recordings of the statements writing sessions.

Kaswe subsequently informed the court that he intends to bring a formal application for the court to visit where the items recovered from Mamu’s house and office are kept.

Further hearing in the case resumes at 11am on Wednesday.

Southwest governors yesterday made a bold, pre-emptive and strategic move to forestall terrorism incursion into the region.

The governors resolved to set up a joint regional security fund and security intelligence sharing communication platform while also reinvigorating forest surveillance across the six states.

Other measures agreed upon include the monitoring and regulation of inter-state migration and effective action against illegal mining activities.

The governors also reiterated their support for state police as replacement for the current centralised policing structure.

This is in line with the joint position adopted by all 36 governors on the platform of the National Economic Council (NEC), to which they all belong and chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima.

But Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun has always expressed his opposition to the idea of state police.

The six governors -Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos ), Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Dapo Abiodun (Ogun) Lucky Aiyedatiwa (Ondo), Biodun Oyebanji (Ekiti) and Ademola Adeleke (Osun), who was represented by his deputy- Kola Adewusi – converged on the Oyo State Government House, Agodi, Ibadan, for a crucial discussion on security, economic development and regional integration.

Adeleke did not personally attend because he is abroad.

Sanwo-Olu, Chairman of the Southwest Governors Forum, who presided over the meeting, emphasised that the security of lives and property cannot be compromised in the region.

The meeting held on the heels of mounting security challenges in contiguous states, such as Kwara, where worshippers were abducted in Eruku and Kogi.

In Kebbi and Niger states, where the bandits attacked schools and kidnapped pupils and teachers.

On Sunday, the Niger school proprietor announced the escape of 51 pupils from their abductors. Security agencies are intensifying efforts to rescue those still being held by the bandits.

Before yesterday’s meeting, the six governors have been beefing up securities in their states individually.

They are now to work close together to secure the region.

With local security outfit, Amotekun, complementing security, the region is believed to be the safest in the country.

Oyebanji, Aiyedatiwa and Makinde have held strategic meetings with security agencies, community leaders and other stakeholders in their domains.

Abiodun, who has also met security chiefs, said apart from the documentation of foreigners, government would crackdown on unauthorised settlements, illegal miners and scavengers.

Already, no fewer than 70 foreigners from Chad, Sudan and other states have been arrested in four days in Ogun.

Sanwo-Olu, who read the communique of the meeting, told reporters that the governors deliberated on national security and how it affects the Southwest.

The communique reads: “The Forum commends President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on the fight against insecurity and various economic reforms and other developmental agenda.

The Forum calls on the Federal Government to note the urgent need for enhanced forest surveillance across the Southwest States and called for the Federal Government to secure the vast forest belts that have become hideouts for criminal elements.

“To this end, the Forum agrees that the Federal Government should help deploy Forest Guards across the Southwest states, with each state government responsible for providing the required personnel.

“The Governors reaffirm their collective commitment to reclaiming the forests, and ensuring that these spaces no longer serve as safe-corridors for banditry, kidnapping, or any form of criminal activities.

Air strikes kill terrorists in Borno, pound hideouts in Katsina, Kwara

    • Troops launch blistering attacks
    • 200 ISWAP fighters killed in clash with Boko Haram

Newly inaugurated Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, swung into action at the weekend.

In a coordinated intelligence-driven action, scores of Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists were bombed out of existence as they gathered for another dastardly act.

The strikes, which also destroyed the enemy’s cache of arms, took place around the Lake Chad area of Borno State – the epicentre of the Boko Haram terrorists.

In two other strikes by the Air Force, hideouts of terrorists gathering in Katsina and Kwara were wiped out.

NAF’s spokesperson, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, gave an account of how the Air Force took the battle to the terrorists on Sunday.

He said: “Air assets conducted precision strikes southeast of Shuwaram before shifting to Mallam Fatori, where ISWAP elements were observed mobilising with motorcycles and boats along the Lake Chad Basin.

“The strikes destroyed insurgent hideouts, logistics hubs, and weapons storage facilities, eliminating several terrorists and crippling their mobility capabilities.

“Post-strike assessments confirmed multiple neutralisations and a significant degradation of ISWAP’s operational networks in the area.”

The statement added that while airstrikes were ongoing in the Northeast, another NAF fighter jet carried out precision air interdiction missions over Garin Dandi and Chigogo in Kwara State, striking bandit camps with “devastating accuracy.”

According to the statement, the attacks based on credible intelligence left the bandits suffering heavy losses.

In a similar operation, air assets under Operation FANSAN YAMMA struck Zango Hill, which harbours a terrorist kingpin and his fighters in the Kankara Local Government Area of Katsina State.

Some of the terrorists were killed and their logistics hubs destroyed.

The statement described the strike as one of the most decisive against bandits in the Northwest in recent times.

It added that in a bid to demonstrate sustained reach and precision, the Air Component of Operation FANSAN YAMMA, under Sector 1, conducted an Armed Reconnaissance mission across the Northwest corridor, covering key settlements in Zamfara, Kebbi, and Kaduna States.

It said settlements like Kakihum, Dankolo, Kotonkoro, and Kuyello served as routes and hideouts for armed groups along the Birnin Gwari–Funtua axis.

“During the mission, coordination with Forward Operating Bases at Dankolo and Kotonkoro revealed suspicious movement near Wam Hill, where terrorists on motorcycles were spotted attempting to flee.

“The aircrew swiftly engaged and neutralised the targets, with no further hostile activity observed,” it said.

NAF attributed the success of the operations across Borno, Kwara, and Katsina states, as well as the entire Northwest, to the directives of the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke.

“Each mission reaffirms NAF’s resolve to project smarter and intelligence-driven airpower to project purposeful lethality against insurgents and criminals while protecting the lives and properties of citizens towards enhancing national security,” the statement said.

    Tasks before commissions

Yesterday, the Federal Government gave the six development commissions a new task: they must henceforth work with the federal and state governments on security.

Minister of Regional Development Abubakar Momoh described the security role as one of the core mandates of the commissions.

“The commissions will work side by side with state governments to address insecurity in their regions. It is part of their core mandate.

“They are not the chief executives of the states, but they will complement the work of other levels of government.”

Momoh spoke with reporters at the Presidential Villa after leading some of the commissions’ chiefs to a meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The minister said although the development commissions do not serve as the primary authorities in their various regions, they have been mandated to support both the federal and state governments in addressing the rising security challenges in the country.

He cited recent proactive interventions by state governments on federal highways, including repairs of the Benin–Warri Road in Delta State and work along the Sapele–Ogorode corridor in Edo State, as examples of the type of collaboration the Federal Government aims to strengthen.

    Governors laud security overhaul

In Minna, the Niger State capital, the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for bolstering and revamping the nation’s security framework.

“We commend the President for strengthening the security architecture in Nigeria, his commitment to infrastructure renewal, and his focus on human capacity building,”  the PGF said yesterday.

The forum’s Chairman, Hope Uzodimma, led some members on a sympathy visit to the Niger Governor, Mohammed Umar Bago, whose state was recently hit by floods, tanker explosions and boat accidents.

Governors Babajide Sanwo-Olu(Lagos), Biodun Oyebanji(Ekiti), Ahmed Ododo (Kogi), Sheriff Oberevwori(Delta) and Francis Nwifuru(Ebonyi), as well as deputy governors of Kebbi, Jigawa and Sokoto states, were on the entourage.

Uzodimma urged sub-national governments to mirror federal efforts and partner with the Tinubu administration to deliver democracy dividends and better governance to the people.

The PGF Chairman, who emphasised the forum’s “one for all” ethos, described the Niger ’tragedies’ as a collective wound for all progressives.

Uzodimma called on governments at all levels to put in place preventive measures to avoid reoccurrences.

“We are not unaware that some of the incidents are avoidable, but we have seen it as a call for the government and well-wishers to put in place preventive measures, measures that will not enable repeat occurrences of the tragedies that have happened. We feel touched and we condole with the governor,” he said.

Governor Bago thanked the forum for the visit and acknowledged federal and state aid.

“Niger State has suffered a lot from insecurity, natural disasters, and crises, but we’ve received support from everyone,” Bago said.

    200 ISWAP fighters killed

Fierce fighting between Boko Haram and rival militants from the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) broke out on Sunday in Dogon Chiku, near the shores of Lake Chad, as the two extremist groups continue to battle for territorial control.

At least 200 ISWAP fighters were reportedly killed in the clashes, according to Babakura Kolo, a member of a civilian militia assisting the Nigerian military.

A former Boko Haram member, who now monitors jihadist activities, confirmed the toll and said several ISWAP weapons were seized. Boko Haram lost four fighters in the encounter.

“This could be the worst clash between the two groups since they began attacking each other,” said Saddiku, the former militant.

Video clips seen showed dead bodies in canoes filled with bloodied water. An intelligence source estimated that “more than 150” were killed.

Boko Haram and ISWAP have been locked in a violent power struggle since their 2016 split.

Air Chief summons commanders, urges harder strikes against terrorists

The Chief of Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, has summoned Air Component Commanders from all operational theatres, charging them to intensify precision air operations that deliver “smarter, harder, and more decisive firepower” against terrorists and other non-state actors.

Addressing the commanders, during a high-level strategic meeting at the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Headquarters, Abuja, Air Marshal Aneke emphasised that the days ahead demand agility, precision, and intelligence-driven warfare against criminals threatening the peace and stability of the country.

“We must fly smarter and strike harder not only to neutralize threats but to protect the lives and properties of Nigerians,” he said.

“Every mission must reflect professionalism, purpose, and patriotism.”

According to the NAF boss, the evolving nature of threats across theatres requires synchronization of air, land, and maritime operations to achieve joint mission success.

“Our operations must be intelligence-led, coordinated, and focused. We will continue to work closely with the sister services and other security agencies to ensure a united front in the fight against terrorism and criminality,” he added.
