  • Sam Omatseye: Pain in the heart of hate preacher

The Chairman, Editorial Board of The Nation Newspaper, Sam Omatseye is in tears. He is in deep pain and regret. The pain in Omatseye’s heart began the day Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State was declared winner of the 2019 election.

Omatseye knew that his emotion-laden commentaries enmeshed in acrimony as published on the back page of The Nation had failed to elicit the rejection of Governor Ortom among Benue people – a target he set for himself long before the polls. Omatseye’s diatribe on Governor Ortom sounds much like the frustration which reality thrusts upon a drunken debtor who must face his creditor the next morning. His pain is nonetheless understandable.

I keep wondering what interest the Chairman of a newspaper’s editorial board has in the politics of a state as we have seen in Sam’s frequent outings on Benue State in the last one year. Wither goes Omatseye’s toga of neutrality? Why so much venom upon one governor?

Sam’s latest column as published on the back page of April 1, 2019 edition of The Nation sought to paint Governor Ortom as a tribal warlord who preaches hate, division and fear using the herdsmen attacks on Benue communities. He in the same column portrayed Plateau State Governor, Simon Lalong as a peace-loving man and one who cherishes the unity of all Nigerians living in his state.

Omatseye has apparently lost the meaning of democracy which confers on the people the right to choose their leaders.

The curious question is; who paid Sam Omatseye to denigrate Benue people calling them lovers of food and sex? His words, “I hear they make pounded yam by the day and make love at night.”

Omatseye is clearly on a mission to trigger national hatred towards Benue people and leaders of the State. Quite unfortunate! It is sad because Sam is not known to own cattle. Even if he owns cows, his animals graze far away from the Benue Valley. So why so much anger that Governor Ortom signed a law and insisted that the legislation be implemented? Was Sam aware of the public hearings that took place in the three senatorial districts of Benue before the State House of Assembly passed the Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Bill?

Ironically, in the entirety of the 173-line column in The Nation, Omatseye has failed to fault the 2019 Benue election which gave Governor Ortom his 2nd term. There is nowhere in the piece that he said Governor Ortom was not genuinely voted by the people. This implies that he has also admitted that truly, the Benue State Governor is loved by his people despite vicious daily ‘sermons’ by angry men like Sam Omatseye who try to shred his reputation and political credentials.

Perhaps Sam needs to be reminded that Governor Ortom scored one of the widest margins by any Governor seeking re-election. He polled 434,473 votes to beat his closest rival and candidate of the APC, Emmanuel Jime, who got 345,155 votes – a margin of 89, 318.

Omatseye’s latest bile against Governor Ortom is a veiled attack on Benue people majority of who renewed the Governor’s mandate last month. By repeatedly playing down the herdsmen invasion and killing of hundreds of innocent people, Omatseye has not only chosen the path of infamy but also played the card of a conspirator and that of an editor who uses his medium to insult an entire state. Sam implied in one of his paragraphs that the January 11, 2018 mass burial of 73 Benue victims of herdsmen attacks was a mere political event. We forgive Sam Omatseye. But it must be stated that no dance on the graves of the victims can be more painful and shameful!

Omatseye should have known that under Governor Samuel Ortom Benue has garduated 172 doctors between 2015 and 2018. He should also have known that regular payment of salaries resumed in the State since January 2018 while efforts are in top gear to clear the arrears.

The Nation’s Editorial Board Chairman ought to have told Nigerians in his column that he is now a card carrying member of All Progressives Congress, APC. He didn’t need to hide under the journalism cloak of impartiality to play the political talking drum.

    • Terver Akase

    Chief Press Secretary

    April 01, 2019.

  • No going back on my APC exit – Ortom

Brands party one man show in Benue

Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State has declared that he is leaving the  All Progressives Congress (APC)  for good.

He told members of OnTiv Professionals Association in Abuja that he would not return to the party for any reason.

Ortom spoke a few hours after emerging from a peace meeting with the APC national chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole where he said he had not dumped the party  and  had expressed hope of a peaceful resolution of the crisis in the party.

But receiving his guests at the in Benue State Governor’s Lodge, Abuja, the governor said : “I can assure you and the good  people of Benue that there is no going back on my decision to exit from the APC.”

He added “at the appropriate time in the next few weeks, I would make my next move public.”

And responding on Friday to claims by the state branch of  the APC that  it was the governor that gave himself a red card after it raised  issues of governance with him, Ortom branded  the party a one man show in Benue.

His Chief Press Secretary, CPS, Terver Akase challenged the APC to “bring out facts to back their claim that they had faulted the performance of the Governor.”

He said: “During the State Congress of the party at Aper Aku Stadium in Makurdi, it adopted the Governor as its consensus candidate. Again, the party publicly said its decision was based on the sterling stewardship of Governor Ortom within the last three years. But being the true democrat that he is, the Governor decided that other aspirants be also allowed to vie for the governorship seat to deepen internal democracy in the party.

“While Governor Ortom appreciates the platform which APC gave him to offer service to the people of Benue State, it is regrettable that the same party has now turned to demonize him for obvious selfish reasons.

“Governor Ortom has encouraged regular caucus and other stakeholders’ meetings at which he constantly gives briefings about the security and financial challenges in the state. He also gets feedback and input at such meetings.

“His successful conduct of the local government elections which APC candidates overwhelmingly won chairmanship and councillorship positions throughout the state is proof of the popularity of his administration.

“At no time did Governor Ortom ever mention that the APC in Benue State gave him a red card. He stated categorically that it was the leader of the party who said at several fora that he had given him red card and the Governor made efforts to resolve the matter within the structure of the party at the state level before going public.

“That APC in the state has issued the statement as if it is the leader of the party or as if they are one and the same, underscores Governor Ortom’s concern that the party structure in the state is out to satisfy the whims and caprices of one individual.

“It is now clear that APC in Benue State has opted to mortgage the interest of the people of the state. The party’s unprovoked attack on Governor Ortom points to where its interest lies.

“More ridiculous is the fact that APC has become a one man show in Benue State. It should be on record that the attacks on Governor are coming now because he couldn’t meet some inordinate personal ambitions and interests of those who want to perpetually shortchange the people.

“The media attack on Governor Ortom by the state chapter of APC is the beginning of the smear campaign about which we alerted Benue people and other Nigerians. More of such disparaging statements should be expected in the days to come.

“However, no amount of intimidation or personal attacks can make the Governor to abandon the people of Benue State. He has chosen to stand with the people and won’t be distracted now or in the future.”

Oshiomhole on Thursday had said  Ortom  “is not going anywhere”   and called him  “a very, very prominent member of our party.”

  • Benue killings: Ortom cuts short vacation

Governor Samuel Ortom has cut short his vacation to return home and address the security challenge occasioned by the ongoing killing of Benue people by armed Fulani herdsmen.

13 people, two Catholic priest and 11 Parishioners were killed in a early morning attacked at a Catholics church in Mbalom, Gwest east local government area in Benue State.

This brings the number of people killing by suspected Fulani herdsmen to 45 since Governor Ortom proceeded on his annual leave.

Last week killing took place in Logo, Guma, Makurdi and Naka by suspected Fulani militia.

In a statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor Chief Terver Akase said the Governor is in China would arrived Makurdi any moment to help tackle the security challenges occasions  by attacked on harmless farmers by suspected Fulani herdsmen.

  • Benue shifts mass burial of 24 victims of herdsmen massacre

Benue shifts mass burial of 24 victims of herdsmen massacre

The Benue State Government unexpectedly rescheduled Friday’s planned mass burial for the victims of this week’s herdsmen attack in Okpokwu.

The 24, including women and children, were killed at Omusu Edimoga. Dozens of others were wounded while some others are missing.

Governor Samuel Ortom’s Chief Press Secretary, Terver Akase, said the mass burial will now take place on Wednesday.

He gave no reason for the postponement.

He merely said :“a church service, followed by burial of the victims, will take place on Thursday, next week at Okpokwu.”

Governor Ortom however announced that President Muhammadu Buhari will visit the state on Monday.

It is in continuation of Buhari’s visit to states that recently came under deadly attacks by Fulani herdsmen and militants.

He has already visited Taraba and Plateau states.

He is also billed to visit Yobe and Zamfara.

Benue had in January buried 78 people shot dead by rampaging herdsmen in Guma and Logo local government areas of the state.

  • Ortom has done many things positively different – Akase

Ortom has done many things positively different – Akase

Chief Press Secretary to the Benue State governor, Terver Akase speaks with journalists on the Gov. Samuel Ortom-led administration’s efforts at delivering essential infrastructure to the people, including the move to recover N107bn state fund allegedly looted by the previous administration. Emmanuel Uja was there.

When your principal the Governor says he inherited an empty and deficit treasury from the previous administration, what exactly does he mean?

Since the creation of Benue State, the people have never experienced the kind of locusts that hit them under the previous government. At the time Governor Samuel Ortom was sworn into office, the accounts of the state were in red. His predecessor had, in addition to leaving a huge debt burden and unpaid salaries for many months, stopped giving overheads to ministries, departments and agencies; took bank overdrafts and left projects uncompleted. So it was a question of where and with which resources do we start. The government of Gabriel Suswam received federal allocation for the month of May but not even one month’s salary was paid. The gloomy situation necessitated the decision by the government to take a loan of N10 billion, with which it was able to pay salaries for the months of May and June, as well as kick-start governance in various sectors of the economy.

Governor Ortom came with the mantra, ‘If you chop money, money will chop you;’ but his critics are quick to describe his stand against corruption as lip service. What’s your response to this?

Ironically, majority of Benue people believe what their Governor has been saying and doing to eliminate corruption from the closets of governance. The people whom you refer to as describing the Governor’s anti-corruption campaign as lip service are those who benefited from the massive looting of the state directly or indirectly and were hoping for a continuation of the plunder if PDP (Peoples Democratic Party) had remained in power. The very day Governor Ortom declared war against corruption in Benue State, he began with members of his cabinet. He said during the State Executive Council meeting that if anyone of the Exco members was interested in making money, the person should honourably resign and go into business. To set the tone for the success of the anti-graft war, the Governor set up the Justice Elizabeth Kpojime Judicial Commission of Inquiry, which report indicted the former Governor Gabriel Suswam and 51 others for looting N107 billion belonging to Benue State.

Among those indicted was a serving special adviser to the Governor, but as soon as the matter came up, Governor Ortom asked the affected adviser to resign even as the offence upon which he was indicted was not committed under the present administration.

The governor has also taken steps to restore sanity in the system. As we speak, there are two bills before the Benue State House of Assembly. One of them is on public procurement, better known as due process. The other is on fiscal responsibility. These bills are the first in the state and when they become law, the battle against corruption will reach an unprecedented height in Benue.

Critics of your principal have also accused him of following the same pattern, with little to show. Tell us about this government’s record of achievements in brief.

You see, the opposition party in Benue State has recruited mercenaries, whose only job is to hurl daily insults on Governor Ortom and his administration. Their target is to divert attention from the numerous achievements being recorded by the Governor. Falsehood is their vehicle for achieving the impossible task. I call it impossible task because Benue people are wiser, and that’s why their attempts have failed on all occasions. The people have seen through their veil of lies and rejected same. The people know that the economy is generally bad now, so they understand and appreciate the Governor for his efforts despite the current recession.

You surely read about Governor Ortom’s presentation at one of the side events during the United Nations General Assembly this year. That feat was possible because Benue under Governor Ortom became the first state in the country to pay counterpart funds for construction and equipment of modern primary health centres in 33 communities across the state under Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs. The State Government paid N1.2 billion and accessed N1.2 billion from the SDGs office taking the total to N2.4 billion. With the funds, the construction of the health centres, skill acquisition and enterprise development centres, orange packaging plants and boreholes commenced in parts of the state. Most of those projects have been completed as I talk to you.

The Schools of Nursing and Midwifery which lost accreditation three years ago have regained the accreditation. Imagine the massive contribution the two schools will make to the manpower needs of the Benue State health sector. This sector was neglected by the previous government and structures in those institutions were all dilapidated and became an eyesore. Two weeks ago, the Governor gave a directive that 86 casual staff of the schools be given letters of permanent appointment and the directive was immediately implemented.

Are you saying that your principal is addressing both employment and training challenges in the health sector at the same time?

That’s precisely what I am saying. The Governor had earlier done a similar thing for the Benue State University’s School of Health Sciences. Medical students of the university were stagnated and could not graduate for 12 years until Governor Ortom came on board and immediately approved the payment of accreditation requirements for College of Health Sciences and the University Teaching Hospital. Seeing the commitment demonstrated by the Ortom administration, the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria gave the accreditation and opened the gates for the graduation of 40 pioneer medical doctors after 12 years of stagnation.

In education, the success story is equally impressive. The construction and rehabilitation of 740 primary schools in the 23 local government areas of the state is ongoing. Arrangements have been concluded for the procurement and installation of 100 computers and portal construction in primary and junior secondary schools across the state. The Governor also approved the payment of salaries of BSU Technical School Staff after five years of non-payment. Very soon, renovation and rehabilitation of 64 government-owned secondary schools will commence across the state.

In the area of infrastructure, the present government mobilised contractors back to site to complete many roads abandoned by the previous administration, while work on two new road projects is ongoing. The road projects abandoned by the former government are Zaki Biam – Afia – Gbeji, Taraku – Naka – Agagbe, Oju – Obussa – Utonkon, Otukpo – Utonkon – Igumale, Oshigbudu – Ogbaji, Igbor – Ikpa – Wannune, Vandeikya – Koti-Yough – Adikpo, Ge – Ikyobo – Agbeede – Amua – Anshagba, Tordonga – Zaki Biam with spur to Tsewuaze – Tiza – Shila as well as the Daudu – Gbajimba Road. The new road contracts awarded by our administration which work is also ongoing are Mobile Police Barracks – Yaikyo – Apir and the Origbo – Imande – Akpur – Gbajimba Road.

Still on infrastructure, work has already commenced on the Makurdi Cargo Airport, which is a public-private partnership.

Benue is reputed as the food basket of the nation. Interestingly, your boss is a farmer and he made agriculture one of the pillars of his administration. But more than one year down the road, the food basket still looks empty. How is your government keeping its promise of agriculture-driven industrialisation?

The Return-to-farm policy of the Ortom administration is well on course and the agric revolution is sweeping across the Benue valley like a hurricane. One of the first things the Governor did was to subsidize fertiliser for farmers by 38%. The subsidy and the method of distribution ensured that fertiliser got to the actual farmers at affordable prices. Though there were isolated cases of complaints in some quarters, the exercise was a major improvement from what the people experienced under the previous administration. As we interact this minute, public-private arrangements have been concluded to enable Benue farmers purchase and own tractors and other agriculture equipment at subsidised rates. Marketing Boards will soon be established to boost commercial agriculture in every part of Benue State. When the rains stop, clearing of mass hectares of land for dry season farming will commence while dams will also be built. The investor who has taken over Taraku Mills has set aside about N6 billion for only the purchase of soya beans from Benue farmers this year. The State Government last week, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Bank of Industry to jointly provide N2 billion loans to farmers of the state. This move will no doubt place the needed capital in the hands of our farmers and you bet that the economy of the state will be better for it.
