Eight shortlisted applicants fail Kwara TESCOM drug test, lose slots

At least eight of the 1,800 shortlisted for Kwara Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM) jobs have tested positive to outlawed drugs, automatically losing their slots to the next best candidate in the highly competitive exercise, a statement said on Monday.

TESCOM Chairman Bello Taoheed Abubakar said in the statement that the eight shortlisted candidates tested for hard drugs such as benzodiazepine, tramadol, cotinine, marijuana and amphetamine — all of which are considered unsafe for human health.

The drug test was conducted by the NDLEA with the full support of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.

“A major implication of this development is that the affected individuals will be replaced by the candidates who are next to them in performance from their respective local government areas,” the statement said.

“The idea is to send an unmistaken message about the state government’s zero tolerance for drug abuse. We have a duty of care not to expose little children to drug abuse under any circumstance.

“Again, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has etched his name in gold for again insisting that recruitment into the teaching profession should be strictly meritorious and devoid of any practices that may jeopardise quality learning in our schools. He has also proven that he is a man who is sold to giving every Kwaran a fair chance.”

He, however, said those without university degrees in relevant subject areas should not apply, just as NCE holders without university degrees should not also apply.

“Applicants who meet the first-layer recruitment criteria will be invited for a Computer-Based Test (CBT) at centres closest to their local government of residence.

“After the test, successful candidates will undergo drug tests at approved NDLEA centres among other verification exercises that will precede the issuance of employment letters.

Justifying the need for the latest recruitment, barely four years after employing about 5,000 teachers, he said shortages and vacancies opened up due to retirement, resignation, death and even ‘japa’ syndrome.

He noted that about 700 teachers out of those employed about four years ago have resigned due to relocation out of the country, better offers, among other reasons, hence the need to fill the slots created.

Alamu added that the government was considering giving incentives to teachers that would work in rural communities, to encourage them to stay in the areas.

The chairman said the commission was executing the recruitment in conjunction with relevant agencies such as Ministry of Education, Ministry of Establishment, Office of the Head of Service and Ministry of Finance.

He described Governor Seyi Makinde as a lover of education, who saw the vacuum in secondary schools as one that must be filled, despite recruitment about four years ago.

We give priority to STEM teachers in hiring, says TESCOM

The Lagos State Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM) says it will continue giving priority to teachers who major in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)- related subjects during recruitment.

Deputy Director, Public Affairs, TESCOM, Mr. Kayode Sutton, said this in Lagos that the commission had been specific in the employment of teachers.

Sutton said that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State’s administration had been proactive in the education sector, up-scaling teachers through training, to enable them make impact in the teaching and learning of students.

“We have specific teachers called STEM teachers, that is the Science (Physics, Chemistry and Biology); Technical; English and Mathematics teachers; they are in dire need in most of our schools.

“Therefore, we are giving priority to them in employment and that will continue, because teachers for these subjects are scarce and not easy to come by, and we must fill any available vacancy.

“That does not imply that other subjects teachers are not considered for employment. We do. Infact, we have them in abundance across the schools.

“However, we place priority on the STEM teachers in all schools across the education districts and we have been employing quite a good number of them, because of their importance,” he said.

The Deputy Director said that the commission was working in collaboration with the six education districts across the state to fill-in the gaps where teachers retired for age or years of service.

Sutton said that there were schools with too many students for a teacher, describing it as a shortcoming that was being addressed by the state government.

He said that TESCOM had been recruiting, to reduce the teacher/students ratio in the schools, adding that, at least 30 students to one teacher was the target, and the state government was moving towards that.

According to him, the governor has been magnanimous enough to approve what is called – the ‘Exit Replacement Plan’, a platform used to replace vacancies in post-primary schools.

“We have a mandate to reduce the teachers/students ratio in our schools, because the students in each of the classes are much than the teacher to handle, we know this is a shortcoming.

“As a responsible and responsive government, we have moved swiftly to address this in the last few years and employed thousands of teachers through an official platform.

“The opportunity is explicitly for those that are education-based to apply, where they provide their details and requirements, they get a unique number that TESCOM will use to contact them,” he said.

Sutton said that the commission visited the database, select randomly the needed subject teachers; call them for interview; mini-test and brief teaching practice within the interview session, to get the best qualified.
