  • Lagos sports federations to develop growth strategy

    Forum of Lagos State Sports Federations Association Chairmen has resolved to work together to develop a strategic document that will enhance sports development in the state.

    Speaking yesterday after their meeting at the Teslim Balogun, Chairman of Chairmen, Seyi Akinwunmi, who is also the Chairman of the Lagos State Football Association (LSFA) said the it has become necessary for the federation chairmen to work together to foster growth of sports in the state.

    Akinwunmi stated that working has a unit would help the body proffer solution to the myriad of problem bedeviling the sports in the state, while assuring that a working document in accordance with the government policy, would be developed to help the sports association, coaches, athletes and other stakeholders.

    The LSFA boss and his colleagues also called on the Lagos State Sports Council to allow the different associations take over their facilities, noting that the current arrangement which allows some officials to oversee and approve the facilities for use would hinder development. He opined that putting the facilities under the association would help them plan and host their competitions without hindrance.

    The attendees also agreed that more facilities should be provided, coaches should be trained, schools sports should encouraged, while competition should be held periodically to help in the discovery of talents.

    He said committees would be set up to ensure that their activities are well articulated and help the body realise their ambition of taking sports to the zenith.

    Chairman of the LSSC, Kweku Tandoh commended the association chairmen for the move and praised them for their commitment to sports development in the state. He enjoined them to tailor their activities in line with the government policy.

    He also said that the LSSC would partner the associations to develop their various sport but enjoined the association chairmen to become innovative in their way of sourcing sponsors that would help in repositioning their various sports.

    Kweku noted that the emergence of credible associations chairmen has greatly reduced his involvement in the running of the federation. He also urged that the body to develop coaching education, while urging them to make Lagos a pool of talent for the country.

  • 128 players set for Ex Pro Squash Tourney

    128 players set for Ex Pro Squash Tourney

     

     

    About 128 players from 19 states are expected to take part in the first edition of the of the Ex Pro Squash tournament for Under 16 and Under 19 players at the Teslim Balogun Stadium from April 27 to 29.

    The tournament, which is the first to be organized by former players, is expected to salvage once exciting sport and give hope to the numerous young players who play the game. The organisers have also said that participants might surpass the 128 being expected at the championship.

    Tournament director, Sunday Wilson Egberipou said the tournament, which is a developmental programme, would get bigger every year as the former players have decided to make the tournament an annual event.

    Egberipou, added that foreign players might participate in subsequent tournament as the organisers hope to make it an international competition. “We are working hard to make this first edition a success and all hands are on deck to give back to this great sport that brought some of us to lime-light.

    “Yes, we will surely welcome foreign players in future tournament as it is our dream to make the event an international one, he noted.

     • As Lagos Marathon begin with Expo

    Though the main act, the 2016 Access Bank Lagos City Marathon, will not flag off until February 6, the main build up activities to the first full international marathon in Nigeria in 30 years, Lagos City Marathon Expo, starts today at the Teslim Balogun Stadium.

    First of its kind in Nigeria, Marathon Expos are integral of big marathon races worldwide with major marathons like New York, Dubai, London, Boston, Chicago, Tokyo, Berlin drawing thousands of vendors and exhibitors annually.

    The theme of the Lagos City Marathon is Hospitality, Wellness and Wellbeing. Over the weekend, some of the exhibitors were seen mounting their stands in readiness for today, the day one of the Expo.

    Corporate organisations and government bodies expected at the  Expo include Access Bank the title sponsor of Lagos City Marathon, Gsk, Ladel’s Baby Centre, Airtel, another sponsor of the marathon, Food Clique, Oniru Family, Eko Hotel, Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, SuperSport and a host of others.

    Tayo Popoola, the Lagos City Marathon head of Events and Ceremony, said the aim of the marathon is to bring all the stakeholders in the health, wellness, and well-being industry together to promote a healthier Nigeria,

    “The essence of the Lagos City Marathon is not just about elite athletes, economic benefits, showcasing Lagos to the world and other good benefits that the marathon will bring to Lagos and Nigeria, more than these, we also aim to promote the culture of running which scientists have proved to be beneficial to the human body, when you have healthier citizens, you have better workforce and spend less on health and healthcare.’’

    Popoola also revealed that all the athletes; including elite runners, fun runners and other class of runners will collect their kits at the Expo.

    She also revealed that there will be food, music and drinks, while celebrities from the media, musicians, actors, traditional rulers and other very important Nigerians will be guests of the Expo daily.

    Deji Tinubu, the Special Adviser and Chairman Lagos State Sports Commission who is also the Chairman of the Organising Committee Lagos City Marathon ,will formally declare the Expo open on Thursday. The curtain will be drawn on the Expo on February 3.

    2014 IBILE GAMES: SWIMMERS SATISFIED WITH TOURNAMENT’S OUTCOME

    SWIMMERS at the ongoing 2014 Lagos State Sports Festival, “Ibile Games”, have expressed satisfaction with the competition, saying it afforded them the opportunity to show their skills.

    The swimmers told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at the swimming pool of the Teslim Balogun Stadium, venue of the event that the Games were not only to discover talents but also to develop them.

    NAN reports that the Games were organised by the Lagos State Sports Council to prepare athletes ahead of the 19th National Sports Festival in Calabar in November.

    John Faith, a swimmer from Pakoro Junior Grammar School, Majidun, Ikorodu, told NAN that she was impressed with the event, saying she had excelled in the tournament.

    Faith, who had won two of the four events she participated in, described her participation as a step to improving her skills ahead of the upcoming national and international meets.

    “It’s a good competition; it has motivated me to do more in spite of winning.

    “We competed with older and more experienced swimmers and which did not really favour us the upcoming ones.

    “I took part in four events and I came first in 200 freestyle, first in 50m butterfly, second in 50m freestyle,’’she said.

    Ronald Victor from Majidun Ikorodu, a swimmer in the junior male category, said that in spite of his ill health, he won one of his events.

    “Although, I’ve been a bit ill, I still came first in the 50m freestyle, third in 200m freestyle and second in the individual event, it’s been a good feel,’’ Victor said.
