Flying Eagles possibles defeated the probables 4-2 in a keenly contested test game preparatory to a warm-up clash against Tunisia U20s.

The match was played at the Esperance training complex in Tunis on Wednesday morning.

    Line-ups

The possibles paraded the likes of Shehu Abdullahi, Kingsley Madu, Alhaji Gero, Moses Orkuma and skipper Abduljaleel Ajagun, who netted a hat-trick all from the penalty spot.

The possibles’ other scorer was Umar Aminu.

The probables goals came from Bright Osagie and Yahaya Adamu with both goalkeepers Emmanuel Daniel and Jonah Usman saving penalties.

The Nigeria U20 will play their first warm-up game against their Tunisia counterparts on Thursday afternoon, also at the Esperance training complex.

Interestingly, in January the Tunisia U20s hosted the Egypt U20s in two test games.

The first game ended in a 1-1 draw, while the visiting Egyptians won the second game 2-1.

The Flying Eagles defeated Egypt 3-1 and then drew 0-0 with the same team last week. Both Nigeria and Egypt will feature at the 2013 African Youth Championship, which kicks off March 16.

Umar Aminu out of Flying Eagles test

Wikki Tourists forward Umar Aminu will miss the Flying Eagles’ warm-up game against hosts Egypt today due to an ankle injury.

Aminu suffered the injury during Saturday’s friendly against Benin Republic in Abuja, which ended in a goalless draw. Aminu, who could play as a right winger or a second striker, has been one of the shining stars for the Nigeria youth team Class of 2013.

The Flying Eagles trained Tuesday afternoon at the Cairo International Stadium practise pitch preparatory to the friendly, which will be played at the Degla Stadium also in Cairo.

The Nigeria U-20s trained for an hour just before their Egyptian counterparts also worked out at the adjoining training pitch. The match will be played today by 3pm local time, which is 2pm Nigerian time, and it will be played on an artificial pitch.

The second match between the two teams will be staged also on artificial pitch at the Salam Stadium in Cairo on Friday.

This is a good preparation for both teams as matches at the 2013 African Youth Championship will be played on artificial pitches.

The Flying Eagles will depart Cairo on Saturday for Tunis, where they will train before they fly directly to Algeria in time for the AYC.

  • Eagles ready for huge test

    Eagles ready for huge test

Players of the Super Eagles realise that Sunday’s Cup of Nations quarter final duel with the Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire is the biggest test of character that any of them will ever go through in a long time to come.
As they trained in Rustenburg on Friday morning, the players whispered to themselves that Sunday’s clash will be like no other. On paper, the Ivorians have better rating as a team and on the balance, as individual players. But so many things have flown from  paper through the window at this tournament, reminding everyone at every turn that football is all about current form and who turns up at the party.
There is hardly anything to choose from five previous Cups of Nations clashes between these two West African giants. On their way to lifting their first title, on home soil in 1980, the Eagles led by Christian Chukwu could not break the Ivorian defence in a 0-0 draw in Lagos, and had to battle hard to overcome resilient Egypt in their third game to reach the semi finals.
Ten years later when Algeria hosted, both teams were in the same group. In the opening match, Clemens Westerhorf’s Eagles got pole-axed 5-1, while the Ivorians dismissed a second-string Egyptian team 3-1.
Nigeria won against Egypt 1-0 while the Elephants were bashed 3-0 by Algeria. It came to the crunch in the final group phase match but Nigeria held on to a goal by Rashidi Yekini (of blessed memory) in the second minute to go through to the semi finals.
Four years later, both teams would clash in the semi finals of the 19th edition of the Cup of Nations in Tunisia. In an absorbing, give-and-take game with no let-up and minimal breathing space on a cold evening at Stade El Menzah, the Ivorians went ahead twice but Nigeria replied each time, and the affair had to be settled by penalty shoot-out after a 2-2 draw, which Nigeria won 4-2.
On another cold evening in the Egyptian Mediterranean city of Alexandria in February 2006, Elephants avenged by pipping the Eagles 1-0 in their semi final clash, the same result when both teams clashed in the group phase at the 26th finals in Ghana in 2008.
Vincent Enyeama, arguably the best goalkeeper in Africa, will stand between the rampant Ivorians and goal and he has sparkling pedigree to do a great job. Nigeria has never lost a Cup of Nations quarter final match with Enyeama in goal.
In 2004, on a tense evening in Monastir, Cameroon went a goal up after Samuel Eto’O rounded Isaac Okoronkwo on a counter-attack, but goals by Jay-Jay Okocha and John Utaka saw Nigeria through to the semi finals.
Two years later, Enyeama was the hero when Nigeria eliminated Cup holders Tunisia on penalty shoot-out on another memorable evening in Port Said. In 2010, Enyeama stood firm against the Zambians in Lubango and kept his nerve to score the kick that took Nigeria to the last four.
Enyeama, whose massive intervention 36 seconds after Victor Moses’ first penalty, kept Nigeria in the good against Ethiopia on Tuesday, is expected to be protected by Nigeria’s record caps’ holder Joseph Yobo, Godfrey Oboabona, Kenneth Omeruo and Elderson Echiejile.
With midfield enforcer Fegor Ogude suspended, it could be opportunity for precocious home-boy Reuben Gabriel to confirm his quality at championship level.
Much will be expected of star midfielder Mikel Obi in holding balls and doing the long thrusts, while an attack of Brown Ideye, Emmanuel Emenike, Victor Moses and Ikechukwu Uche have capacity to spring surprises against the Elephants.

  • Juventus test for Ambrose

    Juventus test for Ambrose

Super Eagles defender Efe Ambrose and his Celtic mates have been handed yet another tough test in the UEFA Champions League as Celtic face Italian giants Juventus in the UCL round of 16.

Both players have been instrumental to Celtic’s qualification to the knockout phase of the European competition and they will hope to replicate their group stage performance in order to get past the Italians.

The Scottish champions were drawn against Serie A champions Juventus at the Champions League last 16 draw in Nyon, Switzerland on Thursday.

Celtic qualified as second in group G having garnered 10 points from six games to qualify for the knock out phase behind Barcelona while Juventus emerged unbeaten from Group E with wins over Chelsea and Shakhtar. The Old Lady of Italian football, seeded in the draw, top Serie A this season having clinched the Scudetto last term without losing a match.

The other teams Celtic could have faced were Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Malaga, Manchester United, Paris St-Germain or Schalke 04.

The first leg in Glasgow will be played on either February 12/13 or 19/20, with the return game on March 5/6 or 12/13.

Morocco is the other side whom Zambia will face in Johannesburg on January 8.

The Chipolopolo will wrap-up their 2012 match dates with a visit to Dar-es-Salaam on December 22 to face Tanzania. Zambia’s Chipolopolo are grouped alongside Nigeria’s Super Eagles, Burkina Faso and Ethiopia in Group C of the 2013 AFCON.

  • Eagles win test game 3-1

    Eagles win test game 3-1

The Super Eagles defeated non-league side Water FC of Abuja 3-1 in a test game on Saturday.

Both teams first clashed on October 5 in the run-up to a 2013 Nations Cup qualifier against Liberia and the game ended in a 1-1 draw.

Eagles forward Sunday Mba served notice of what was to happen on Saturday when he blasted wide after being set up by Ejike Uzoenyi after just the second minute.

In the sixth minute, Azubuike Egwuekwe strayed forward to head home an Uzoenyi corner but a Water FC player blocked it with his hands.

The referee rightly pointed to the spot and Mba stepped forward to send the keeper the wrong way.

The Eagles would have been two more goals up but Gambo Mohammed blasted wide in the 10 minute, before hitting the cross-bar with a textbook header in the 20th minute.

Gambo finally registered his name on the score board when he out-jumped the Water FC defence to nod home a Solomon Kwambe cross.

The amateur side thereafter woke up and subjected the Eagles’ defence to sporadic raids. Agbim saved in the 42nd minute by palming the ball for a corner kick. The resultant corner kick was rammed home in the 43rd minute by Okey Aboyin, who was also on target when both sides met in October.

The second half was barely five minutes when onrushing Mba was felled in the vital area and referee Aniete promptly pointed to the spot and Mba stepped forward to dispatch his second goal of the day.

The game which was watched by NFF technical director Emmanuel Ikpeme went on a ding dong affair till a dramatic moment in the 85th minute when a Water FC attacker was felled in the Eagles vital area.

A penalty was awarded but blasted wide by Ifeanyi Adibe to ensure a respectable scoreline for the national side who will arrive in the USA today for a friendly against Venezuela on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, nine players from the NPL have made the final cut for the Venezuela game.

The list was announced lunch time Saturday by assistant coach Daniel Amokachi.

Leading the pack is home-based skipper, Chigozie Agbim, who recently moved from Warri Wolves to Rangers. Others are Sunshine Stars skipper Godfrey Oboabona, left back Benjamin Francis, who has been in impressive form at the national team’s camp.

Also picked are Warri Wolves centre back Azubuike Egwuekwe, Solomon Kwambe, Umar Zango Umar, Henry Uche, Sunday Mba of Warri Wolves and Ejike Uzoenyi.

The team will depart for Miami through the Murtala Mohammed International Airport Lagos by 10pm via Delta Airlines and accommodation has already been reserved for the team at the Intercontinental Doral in Miami.

  • How Sandy will test Obama, Romney

How Sandy will test Obama, Romney

The hurricane that is blowing through the East Coast has threatened to create the kind of unpredictable havoc in this election that presidential candidates always fear. With all the scripted television spots and carefully choreographed live appearances, Hurricane Sandy is generating fear that might push the campaign in directions that nobody has expected.

Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama, and their circles of advisers, are likely glued to the weather coverage, trying to figure out which way this hurricane will make the election winds blow.

Social scientists have studied the impact of extreme weather on elections in American history, such as the ways in which Hurricane Andrew in Florida affected the 1992 contest between President George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton

But the severity of the unfolding hurricane, which will stretch across several states if the worst predictions come true, might be more dramatic than anything we have seen in a long time. The hurricane will pose a huge test for Obama in the next few days, one that will make the debate in Denver look like child’s play.

As voters, particularly those who are undecided, deliberate over whom they should support, they will watch Obama as he navigates through the storm and the post-storm clean-up. The crisis offers an opportunity for him to act presidential in a way for which some voters are thirsting and to demonstrate the kind of command that has often been lacking.

He does not want to be an echo to President George W. Bush’s response to Hurricane Katrina, which became a symbol of incompetence.

At the same time, there is little that Mitt Romney can do, other than watch to see what people think of Obama’s response, because any statement from him could easily become seen as political and offer little evidence of his own ability to lead.

The storm has already forced the campaigns to alter their short-term strategies. Already, both campaigns have canceled events in key states such as Virginia that are in the eye of the storm.

Romney will certainly have to pull some of the television spots that he has been getting ready to unleash in the final days of the campaign. Romney’s strategy has focused on saving for a last-minute advertising blitz for which he planned to unload his campaign’s coffers. Republicans didn’t count on a storm getting in the way.

As Americans watch to see their fellow countrymen and women struggling through a crisis, they won’t want to be bombarded with 30-second attack ads.

The Romney campaign will have to quickly think of ways to redesign their ads in certain states so that they fit the moment and provide voters with hope about new leadership rather than take the risk of generating criticism of the GOP being too petty and political, as occurred with Libya. Romney’s team will have to redirect some of their energy toward states not affected, leaving the airwaves silent in the other states, waiting to see whether Romney has the momentum that can carry him.

  • London minicab firm to test 50 electric cars

London minicab firm to test 50 electric cars

A LONDON-BASED minicab firm is aiming to be the first of the city’s taxi companies to use an entirely electric fleet, after signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Chinese car maker BYD.

Greentomatocars is to take delivery of 50 fully-electric BYD e6 models to trial in the capital from the second quarter of 2013. The five-seat crossover car is claimed to have substantial legroom and luggage space, while its BYD-made iron phosphate battery is claimed to offer a range of up to 186 miles on a single charge in urban conditions.

The battery is also said to last more than 4,000 charges and discharge cycles, giving it genuine appeal as a long-term inner-city minicab if the claims prove accurate. At present BYD is China’s fastest-growing electric car manufacturer.

Greentomatocars Managing Director Jonny Goldstone, said: “We are very pleased to be working with BYD on this project. As a partner company, BYD has shown great leadership to challenge the status quo, innovate and electrify mass transport – principles which go to the very heart of greentomatocars.”

“As a car, we see strong parallels between the e6 of today and the then-unfashionable Toyota Prius of 2006,” he continued.

“It is exciting to think that, even as a five-car start up, we played a major role in making the Prius popular; given the scale, experience and high-tech infrastructure we now have at our disposal, we would love to “do a Prius” with the e6, and help propel electric vehicles into the automotive mainstream – where they deserve and, for all our sakes, need to be.”

Mayor of London Boris Johnson added: “It is my aim that London’s minicabs and taxis will be zero-emission by 2020, which will have a major impact on air quality. Every year the fleet is getting cleaner, making our city an even more attractive place to live, work and visit.

“Encouraging many more electric vehicles is a key part of this transformation, so it is great news that greentomatocars has committed to operating 50 of these super-clean machines from next year.”
