Death toll in Texas flash floods rises to 66

No fewer than 66 people are dead in central Texas after devastating flash floods slammed Texas Hill Country, United States, with water rescues taking place along the Guadalupe River, which rose rapidly early Friday morning to the height of a two-story building.

A dozen are still missing from Camp Mystic in Kerr County, a children’s summer camp, officials said yesterday.

Of the fatalities, 59 have occurred so far in Kerr County, its sheriff, Larry Leitha, said at a news conference yesterday morning — an increase from 43 deaths reported the previous night. The dead include 38 adults and 21 children, with 18 of the adults and four of the children unidentified.

At least 11 Camp Mystic campers are missing, along with one counselor, Leitha told reporters. This is the first solid number officials have provided regarding campers who remain unaccounted for, after estimating Saturday that it could be as high as 27. There were about 750 children at Camp Mystic when the floods hit, the sheriff said earlier.

President Trump signed a major disaster declaration for Kerr County  yesterday morning, as Texas Gov. Greg Abbott visited the summer camp for the first time. He called the scene “horrendously ravaged” in a social media post.

“Today I visited Camp Mystic. It, and the river running beside it, were horrendously ravaged in ways unlike I’ve seen in any natural disaster,” Abbott wrote. “The height the rushing water reached to the top of cabins was shocking. We won’t stop until we find every girl who was in those cabins. “

At the Vatican, Pope Leo extended a prayer to the flooding victims during yesterday mass, saying, “I express my sincere condolences to all the families who have lost loved ones, in particular their daughters who were at summer camp, in the disaster caused by the flooding of the Guadalupe river in Texas in the United States.”

Although Kerr County was hit hardest by flooding, at least seven others have been confirmed dead in different parts of Texas. About 150 miles east of Camp Mystic, Travis County has confirmed at least four deaths, county spokesperson Hector Nieto told CBS News by phone Saturday night. Travis County includes the Texas capital city of Austin.

In Burnet County, at least two people were confirmed dead and another six were missing, according to Derek Marchio, emergency management coordinator for the county. More than 50 rescues had been conducted countywide since the flooding crisis unfolded, Marchio said.

In Tom Green County, the San Angelo Police Department confirmed Saturday the death of a 62-year-old woman identified as Tanya Burwick. Police said Burwick was driving when her vehicle became submerged by floodwaters.

Officials have conducted more than 160 air rescues, Leitha said in an earlier update, adding that 850 uninjured and eight injured people have been rescued overall as of Saturday. U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said in a social media post that the U.S. Coast Guard was responsible for saving 223 of those people, as dramatic video showed Guard members conducting aerial rescues near Kerrville on Thursday, while dark water covered the ground.

The Department of Homeland Security oversees the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

“We’ve been rescuing people out of these camps by the hundreds, you know, all day,” Rice said Saturday night. “There’s a lot of folks that are shelter in place, so we leave them in place to make sure that we get them food, water.”

Some of the hundreds of people rescued were found hanging onto trees, Abbott said Saturday. At a news conference, the governor said he signed an updated federal disaster declaration to include several other counties in Texas that have been damaged by storms.

Kerr County Judge Rob Kelly said in Saturday’s briefing that his property was also devastated by the flooding and he “barely got home” on Friday. Kelly also said he had visited a funeral home and “got to see firsthand many of the body bags” before going on a helicopter ride with Sen. John Cornyn and Kerrville Mayor Joe Herring to survey the damage.

“It’s gonna be a long time before we’re ever going to be able to clean it up much less rebuild it,” Kelly said. “We didn’t know. We knew we’d get rain, we know the river rises but nobody saw this coming.”

Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick said in a news briefing on Friday that there hadn’t been “a drop of rain until the tragedy struck” earlier in the day, and that the Guadalupe River had risen about 26 feet in 45 minutes. An alert went out around 4 and 5 a.m. local time Friday, he said.

Speaking to reporters late Friday night aboard Air Force One, Trump called the floods a “terrible thing.” On Saturday, he said his administration was working with state and local officials “on the ground” in Texas to respond to the flooding.

“Melania and I are praying for all the families impacted by this horrible tragedy,” Mr. Trump wrote in a Truth Social post. “Our Brave First Responders are on site doing what they do best.”

Rice, Kerrville’s city manager, explained how the Guadalupe River flooded so quickly.

“When you look at the headwaters of the Guadalupe… there’s a north and a south fork,” Rice said Friday night. “Since 1987, under normal conditions, if you can call it that, you’ll hit water in one of those areas, and those two forks will converge into the Guadalupe, which comes through the city of Kerrville.”

“This rain event sat on top of that and dumped more rain than what was forecasted on both of those forks,” Rice continued. “When we got the report, it was about 7 feet or so on the south fork, and within a matter of minutes it was up to 29 feet, and all of that converged at Guadalupe.”

The Guadalupe River at Hunt reached its second-highest height on record, higher than the famous 1987 flood, the city said, citing the National Weather Service.

  • Measles rip through Texas communities after stagnant vaccine funding

Measles rip through Texas communities after stagnant vaccine funding

The easily preventable disease, declared eliminated in the U.S. in 2000, ripped through communities sprawling across more than 20 Texas counties in part because health departments were starved of the funding needed to run vaccine programmes, officials said.

“We haven´t had a strong immunisation programme that can really do a lot of boots-on-the-ground work for years,” said Katherine Wells, the health director in Lubbock, a 90-minute drive from the outbreak’s epicentre.

The more than 700 measles cases reported this year in the U.S. have already surpassed last year´s total. The vast majority – more than 540 – are in Texas, but cases have popped up in 23 other states. Two Texas children have died. A 6-year-old girl from Gaines County, the center of the outbreak, died in February, the first measles death in the U.S. in a decade. An 8-year-old girl from the same town, Seminole, died earlier this month.

Immunisation programmes nationwide have been left brittle by years of stagnant funding by federal, state and local governments, according to MailOnline.

In Texas and elsewhere, this helped set the stage for the measles outbreak and fueled its spread. Now cuts to federal funding threaten efforts to prevent more cases and outbreaks.

Health departments got an influx of cash to deal with COVID-19, but it wasn´t enough to make up for years of neglect. On top of that, trust in vaccines has eroded. Health officials warn the situation is primed to get worse.

Recent cuts by the Trump administration have pulled billions of dollars in COVID-19 related funding – $2 billion of it slated for immunisation programmes for various diseases. Overseeing the cuts is Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who rose to prominence leading an anti-vaccine movement.

  • Sanwo-Olu campaign offers free surgeries

The Professionals for Humanity (PROFOH), a group of doctors, nurses, microbiologists and other volunteers from Houston, Texas, United States, has partnered the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on free medical care to indigent Lagos.

The medical mission which provides free surgeries, is done under BOSKOH – Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Dr. Kadiri Obafemi Hamzat (his running mate) – platform

At the flag-off ceremony, at the Shomolu General Hospital where experts will spend a week before moving to another, Sanwo-Olu said it was not a political mission as the welfare of Lagosians had nothing to do with politics.

“We are not asking for their PVCs before they can be attended to; anybody who needs help will be attended to. This is all about service to humanity,” he said.

Sanwo-Olu’s wife Dr. Ibijoke, a former chief medical director of Shomolu Primary Health Centre, enjoined those who need surgery to present their cases, assuring that they would be attended to.

Hamzat lauded the mission, saying it would restore hope and life to the sick. “A woman came to me in Epe Local Government Area of Lagos State and asked me to thank the BOSKOH medical team for taking care of her 20 years’ ailment,” he said.

Gbimieotor Daniel Kama, who is the head of PFOFOH, affirmed that the team had been carrying out free medical treatment over the years, adding it had performed thousands of surgeries in and outside the country over the years.

“The surgical operations we have embarked on include hernia, tumours, different kinds of surgeries, and fibroids, among others. We’ve been taking in as many people as possible until the medical team is tired and can not take in any people any longer. Sometimes we do up to 20 types of surgeries in a day.

“You never know until you get inside the theatr; there may be a lot of complicationes you’ll find there. The surgeries we can’t handle are heart and liver related; we do more of general surgeries including glaucoma, thyroid, hernia, fibroids, tumour, gad bladder,” he said.

Cliff Jarrell Director, the head of PROFOH in Nigeria, observed that there is a long list of people with different kinds of surgical operations such as cancers, malignant and non-malignant tumors, orthopedic cases and classes of plastic surgeries.

The team has solved many medical challenges.

Coordinator of the mission, Nike Osa, a microbiologist, stressed that the group wanted to see how it could reduce the number of surgeries available; hence the group is doing its bit to improve the healthcare system.

“The hospitals where the surgeries take place are:  Hernias, fibroids glaucomas and plastic surgeries are being handled at the Onikan General Hospital; the Lagos General Hospital is mostly for paediatric cases, while Gynaecology and Obstetrics cases are done at Shomolu General Hospital.”

Our plastic surgeon, when available, is about the third best on earth and so we have the capacity to handle these cases,” she said.

According to Osa, the major aim of the team is to ensure that people who are not able to afford this expense will get these services for free and it is an immediate intervention for them. In a community like this and with the volume of emergencies you find, if they can’t access healthcare and instead of leaving them in a state where they can’t help themselves, we have brought this to them totally free. We have doctors from the UK, Australia, Spain and USA. We have all the capacity because we have brought in the best. We also welcome volunteers to join the team to bring wellness to Lagosians,” she said, while promising that the free medical surgeries will be replicated in all the local government areas in the state

Father found 13-year-old son, 44-year-old teacher having sex in car

A Texas elementary school teacher was arrested after being allegedly found having sex with a 13-year-old boy in the back seat of her car.

The boy’s father, who allegedly caught the duo inside the car having sex on Dec. 14, while parked on a residential street, notified the school officers.

According to a Press statement published by Bay City Police Department on Facebook, it was stated that the 44-year-old Rachel Gonzalez faces charges of online solicitation of a minor and improper relationship between educator and student.

The police inspected the boy’s mobile phone and found texts from Ms Gonazalez indicating the pair had an inappropriate relationship prior to the alleged incident on 14 December, The Independent reports.

Gunman kills 27 in Texas church shooting

No fewer than 27 people have been killed after a gunman opened fire at a church during Sunday services in United States (U.S.), the police have said.

The attack happened at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, a small town in Wilson County, Texas.

Police official Albert Gamez Jr confirmed the number of fatalities to CBS News.

The gunman, who is reported to have been killed in the aftermath, entered the church and opened fire at around 11:30 local time (17:30 GMT).

“The details are kind of sketchy but what I know right now, what they’re telling me, like 27 deceased and over 20, 25 injured,” Mr Gamez Jr said.

“They’re talking about the shooter is dead also,” he added.

About 50 people usually attend the service, locals said. Local media outlets reported that children were among the dead.

Donald Trump, who is on a five-country tour in Asia, tweeted: “May God be w/ the people of Sutherland Springs, Texas. The FBI & law enforcement are on the scene. I am monitoring the situation from Japan.”

Witnesses close to the small church reported hearing a rapid barrage of about 20 shots. Pastor Frank Buford of the neighbouring River Oaks church, just a few blocks away from the scene of the shooting, said relatives of victims had started to congregate at a makeshift community center.

“We’re holding up as well as we can – we are a strong community, we are strong in our faith,” he told local reporters.

Buford described Sutherland Springs as a close-knit community. “We have a post office, two churches and a dollar store,” he said.

His church received word that a shooting was under way at their sister place of worship at about 11.15am local time, he said. “We started praying for everyone involved in it,” he said.

The pastor of First Baptist, Frank Pomeroy, and his wife were said to be out of town on Sunday and not present when the shooting happened.

First responders converged on the small town of around 400 people. Television stations KSAT and KENS reported a large police presence. A sheriff’s department dispatcher said everyone was at the scene and was unavailable to comment.

KSAT reported that two Airlife helicopters were at the scene and broadcast video of several fire and police vehicles at the church and a photograph of a helicopter that the station said was arriving to take victims to hospitals.

  • Research shows hurricanes severely damaged Texas, Florida communications

A research conducted by a firm, UrgentLink Disaster Communications System, has shown that hurricanes Harvey and Irma severely disrupted communications infrastructure on the Southern coast of Texas and South Florida.

According to the company, the research relied primarily on daily tracking reports from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and discovered that counties on Texas Gulf Coast, South of Houston, faced widespread cell tower outages due to Hurricane Harvey.

It said: “In Aransas County (where the City of Rockport is located), 95 per cent of the county’s cellular towers was down for three days. Harvey knocked out 283,000 landlines in Texas and Louisiana, even though the impact was far less severe than Irma had on landlines in Florida.

“Ninety-one per cent of Florida power and light customers lost power during Hurricane Irma.

“Irma completely disabled 15 Emergency 911 call centres, knocked out 50 per cent of cellular towers in the Greater Miami area and 8.25 million landlines in Florida, Alabama and Georgia.”

According to the President of MB Public Affairs, Mark Bogetich, the people knew “these mega-storms had a devastating impact on lives and property but were surprised by the degree of destruction they caused to communications networks”.

The findings of the research, which was last week availed members of InfraGard, a council of the American Society for Industrial Security’s (ASIS) International, would be made public for use in emergency operations planning.
