    TFN alumni innovators get cash rewards

    Teach For Nigeria (TFN) has rewarded winners of its 2024 Incubation Hub.

    The winners, Nwabuike Odike Collins’  got N2 million seed grant  for his Waste to Design  as the overall winner; Joy Ifeanyi’s Waste to Desks got her N1 million in second position,  while  Babajide Ajayi’s The Warriors’ Project earned third place with a grant of  N500,000.

    Collins’ project is up-cycling plastic waste in schools; Ifeanyi’s is recycling plastic into desks, while Ajayi is supporting students living with sickle cell.

    This year, as in previous editions, innovators underwent a three-month enterprise development training, culminating in a pitch competition where 10 innovators showcased their initiatives for a chance to win a N2 million seed grant.

    TFN thanked Oando Foundation for supporting the Incubation Hub since its inception in 2020, adding that the partnership has been instrumental in fostering innovation and driving the growth of impactful social enterprises.

    The 2024 Incubation Innovators’ projects addressed key challenges.

    Agnes Onyekwere Disu’s Project MEND is empowering women with vocational training; Paschal Anyanwu’s Digital Empowerment Network is bridging the digital divide, while Oluwatobi Sonde’s Project DELIC(Digital Education in Low-Income Communities) is promoting STEAM and digital literacy.

    Teach For Nigeria (TFN)  has inducted the eighth and fourth cohorts of fellows and school leaders, respectively, into its fellowship programme. The 2024 cohort, trained under the theme:  “Teach Today. Shape Tomorrow. Your Leadership Matters Now,” is equipped with essential pedagogical and leadership skills to drive positive change in education.

    TFN is a nationwide movement dedicated to expanding educational opportunities for  children.  In 2017, it launched its fellowship programme and to date, has successfully placed over 1,500 fellows across public primary and secondary schools in Lagos, Ogun, Kaduna, and Oyo states. This year, over 30,000 applicants aspired to join the programme; but  505 fellows and 93 school leaders were selected.

    Chief Executive Officer of TFN, Mr. Ayodele Olajiga, charged the fellows and school leaders to make every day of their two-year commitment count, emphasising the need for collaboration.

    “Ask the cohort whenever you are at a crossroad, and harness your collective strength to drive social change in your respective placement schools and communities,” he counselled.

     A multiple award-winning teacher and Principal Education Officer in Lagos State, Adeola Adefemi, in her  keynote address, urged the fellows and school leaders to embrace a culture of selflessness.

    TFN seeks newgroup of teachers

    Teach For Nigeria (TFN), a non-profit organisation, has opened applications for its eighth cohort of fellows.

    The group is dedicated  to addressing education inequities by building a movement of leaders from diverse academic fields to teach in underserved communities on full-time basis.

    The organisation noted that applicants must be Nigerian nationals aged between 18 and 35, and must have completed the National Youth Service Corps programme on or before July 2024, and hold a university degree with at least second-class honours.

    “The application involves essay writing, an aptitude test, a telephone interview, group assignment, and a physical assessment, including a mock teaching session. The 2024 fellowship application  closes on March 29, with  the application outcome and  next steps  communicated via email.     Chief Executive Officer of TFN  Folawe Omikunle, said fellows commit two years to transforming academic and non-academic outcomes for  children during the fellowship.

    “After the two-year fellowship, they continue to unleash their leadership towards addressing the barriers and issues  identified while in the fellowship,” she added.

    The TFN fellowship is a two-year paid commitment that mobilises fresh graduates and professionals as fellows to make a meaningful impact on the lives of children.

    Prior to  their placement, each cohort participates in an intensive six-week pre-service training. The training exposes fellows to the organisation’s theory of problem and change, its vision, mission, and core values.  Fellows are also trained in 21st-century teaching pedagogy, leadership, and entrepreneurship while undergoing a community immersion experience.

    Since its inception, TFN has recruited, trained, and placed at least 1,500 exceptional young leaders in over 600 schools in Lagos, Kaduna, Ogun, and Oyo states. The organisation has also impacted over 300,000 students and boasts a growing network of 835 alumni.

    It is also part of the Teach for All Network, a growing group of locally-led, independent organisations in over 60 countries with the shared purpose of expanding educational opportunities for children worldwide.

    TFN appoints new chairman, board members

    Teach For Nigeria (TFN) has announced the appointment of Mr. Kunle Elebute as its new Board Chairman and Mrs. Dudun Peterside and Abdulrahman Mijinyawa, an engineer, as new Board of Directors.

    TFN is a leading non-profit organisation committed to addressing the complex challenges confronting children in disadvantaged communities by developing leadership in classrooms and communities to ensure all children can reach their full potential.

     Elebute recently retired from KPMG after a career in professional services which spanned a period of 40 years. He obtained a degree in Economics from the University of Manchester, UK in 1982.

    At various times during his career, he served on a number of not-for-profit Boards such as the Society for Family Health in Nigeria, Nigeria Economic Summit Group; American Business Council; Grange School, Ikeja, Lagos, and Igbobi College, Yaba, Lagos.

    Peterside is a psychologist, executive coach and human development adviser with over 40 years’ experience in psychology and education and over 20 years’ experience as an executive coach. As Managing Partner at Narita Learning Centre, she has coached board members, senior executives and private individuals in several multinational and local organisations across diverse industries.

    She is passionate about education and philanthropy and is a trustee and board member of several charitable and educational organisations.

    Mijinyawa is currently the General Manager, Development and Subsurface Nigeria, Shell Companies in Nigeria (SCiN), responsible for project and asset lifecycle development and subsurface support covering both onshore and deepwater operations.

    With a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, AR joined the Shell Nigeria graduate training program in 2005, shortly before proceeding to the Imperial College, London, for a master’s degree in Petroleum Engineering.

     He is passionate about individual and collective growth, reducing energy and education poverty by enhancing access to energy and quality education and promoting the power of digital technologies to positively transform the way we live. He has been a TFN ambassador since January 2018.

    The new board members will provide strategic guidance and support in expanding educational opportunities and life opportunities to children in underserved schools and low income communities in Nigeria

    Speaking on the appointment, the CEO of Teach for Nigeria, Folawe Omikunle, expressed optimism about the new dispensation’s ability to provide sterling leadership for the organization.

    “I consider Teach for Nigeria to be extremely blessed to benefit from the leadership and perspectives of Mr. Elebute, Mrs. Peterside, and Mr. Mijinyawa, especially as we navigate the current phase of expanding Teach for Nigeria across the nation,” she said.
