TGI: how circular economy can boost investment

Circular economy will enhance resource efficiency, boost investment and reduce waste in agriculture and food production, Head of Sustainability at TGI Group, Yosola Onanuga, has said.

Speaking at the 12th West African Clean Energy and Environment Conference (WACEE) in Lagos, Onanuga noted TGI Group’s commitment to sustainable business.

“Transitioning from a linear to a circular economy requires investment, but the benefits—economically and environmentally—are huge”, she said. “At TGI, we embedded circularity into our business. From food production to agribusiness, we maximise resource recovery, ensuring every part in the process adds value”.

Onanuga stressed TGI’s innovation in rice milling, where agricultural by-products are transformed into energy. “Our rice facility in Argungu, Kebbi State, shows how waste can be turned into a resource. By utilising the by-products, we reduce waste and generate power for our operations, demonstrating benefits of a circular economy”, she said.

TGI Group’s WASIL donates shea nut warehouses

West African Soy Industries Limited (WASIL), member of TGI Group, with USAID-funded Global Shea Alliance (GSA), has announced construction and donation of 100-ton warehouses to women cooperatives in five councils in Kwara State.

The company also donated pots for cooking and drying of nuts before storage. The donations will ease aggregation and storage of shea nuts, fostering inclusion and boost trade.

Patigi, Babanla, Fanagu, Alapa, and Gbugbu will benefit from this initiative, which provides a secure environment for bulk storage of shea nuts to minimise losses from and pests. This will result in a more stable supply and higher quality, expanding income for women shea collectors.

Rafiat Gawat, head of Corporate Communication at TGI, hailed stakeholders for their support in making this a reality. Emphasising the group’s commitment to inclusive agricultural development, Gawat said: “Women and youths are core focus of our initiatives; we always support them especially in agribusiness. The work the women do is invaluable as the shea go into products that traverse the world.”
