Opposition can’t discredit Lagos council poll, says APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has decried attempt by the opposition parties in Lagos State to discredit the recent local government polls.
The party said these attempts, marked by misinformation, sensationalism and outright falsehoods, are not only a disservice to the democratic process, but also an insult to Lagosians, who participated in a peaceful, transparent and credible election.
Lagos APC Publicity Secretary Seye Oladejo said in a statement that the elections were conducted in full compliance with legal and procedural requirements, under the supervision of the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) and with the active participation of civil society observers and other stakeholders.

He said: “The outcome of the elections reflects the will of the people and affirms their continued confidence in the ruling party’s track record of performance and service delivery.
“We categorically reject the unsubstantiated claims of electoral malpractice being peddled by the opposition, whose actions seem driven more by desperation than by a commitment to democratic ideals.
“Lagosians will not be misled by political actors who resort to theatrics instead of engaging meaningfully with the electorate.”
Oladejo added: “The people of Lagos have spoken through the ballot, and their voice must be respected. We urge the opposition to act responsibly and channel any grievance through the proper legal channels, rather than resorting to public smear campaigns aimed at undermining our democratic institutions.
“Our party remains committed to strengthening democracy, upholding the rule of law and delivering on the mandate freely given by the people. We call on all stakeholders to put the interests of Lagos above partisan politics and work together for the continued progress and stability of our state.”

“As we are working towards a second term in office, let us embrace hope, hard work, and unity. Together, we will continue strengthening our communities, creating opportunities, and making the council we are all proud to call home.

“This will presents us with an opportunity to reflect on the strides we have made together and to renew our commitment to building a prosperous, united, and thriving Epe LG as well as strengthening communities by creating more opportunities for growth and development.”

  • Tinubu’s emergency rule in Rivers averts economic crisis, bloodshed, says APC chieftain

Tinubu’s emergency rule in Rivers averts economic crisis, bloodshed, says APC chieftain

Elder statesman and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta State, Olorogun Morrison Olori, has attributed the political crisis in Rivers State to Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s inability to manage political interests and curb threats from militant groups targeting oil and gas installations in the Niger Delta.

Olori stated that President Bola Tinubu’s decision to impose emergency rule in the state was necessary to protect Nigeria’s economy, which was at risk following militant attacks on critical oil and gas facilities.

“All through the repeated threats by the militants to destabilize the Nigerian economy, Governor Fubara neither cautioned nor condemned their actions. That posture suggests that these militant groups had his blessing”, Olori said while addressing journalists at his Abuja residence on Saturday.

President Tinubu had on Tuesday declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, suspending Governor Fubara, his deputy, and members of the State House of Assembly.

The move followed escalating political tensions and security concerns in the state.

Olori, who also holds the title of Obaseki of the Great Ughelli Kingdom, praised the president’s intervention, arguing that no leader would sit back and allow a state governor to derail national stability.

“Nigerians should blame Governor Fubara for the current crisis in Rivers State. The state of emergency declared by Mr. President was to de-escalate the tension and curtail threats by militant groups who had sworn to cripple the nation’s economy.

“These militants matched their words with action by destroying pipelines, and yet, the governor remained silent”, he asserted.

He further emphasized that President Tinubu’s decisive move not only prevented an economic catastrophe but also shielded Governor Fubara from impeachment.

“President Tinubu should be commended for his proactive leadership. For once, we have a president who prioritizes Nigeria’s stability. His swift intervention has contained the crisis in Rivers”, Olori stated.

Olori also accused Governor Fubara of disregarding the Supreme Court’s judgment, which affirmed Martins Amaewhule as the recognized Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

“For a governor to disregard another arm of government—the legislature—which was equally elected, is a violation of the Nigerian Constitution.

“Fubara should count himself lucky that President Tinubu did not allow Wike’s men to remove him from office. Instead of vilifying Mr. President, people should thank him for saving Fubara from impeachment”, he said.

The APC chieftain further argued that the governor’s alleged tacit support for militants amounted to economic sabotage.

“In a normal country, a governor who supports militant threats against national assets should be held accountable. The state of emergency is necessary to prevent further destruction and restore order in Rivers State”, Olori declared.

  • Season of migration to APC

    Season of migration to APC

Ahead of the next general elections in 2027, many politicians, particularly those elected on the platform of the opposition parties, are defecting to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in droves. While the APC is celebrating this development because it has further strengthened it for future elections, observers have called for reforms against indiscriminate defections of elected officials. Deputy Political Editor RAYMOND MORDI reports

Valentine Ozigbo, one of Peter Obi’s staunch allies in the Labour Party (LP), recently announced his defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC). A former LP governorship aspirant in Anambra State, Ozigbo formally joined the APC on Thursday, February 20, 2025, at his ward in Amesi community, Aguata Local Government Area, 24 hours after resigning from the LP.

Ozigbo said his decision to join the APC is driven by his deep-rooted belief in progressive governance and his desire to work alongside forward-thinking leaders to champion policies that will uplift the people of Anambra and Nigeria. The former LP chieftain is eyeing the APC ticket for this year’s off-cycle governorship election in the Southeast state.

Ozigbo is not alone; it is a season of political migration, with politicians moving from opposition parties, particularly the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), the LP, and the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), to the APC.

Within the last five weeks, a PDP lawmaker, Garba Koko, a House of Representatives member from Kebbi State, also announced his defection to the APC via a letter read on the floors of the House by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas. The legislator said in the letter that he resolved to dump the PDP because of the “prolonged and protracted” crisis in the fold.

Koko’s defection comes about 24 hours after Amos Magaji, a lawmaker from Kaduna State who was also elected on the PDP platform, announced his defection to the APC. Magaji, who represents Zangon Kataf/Jaba Federal Constituency of Kaduna State, equally cited unresolved crises within the PDP from the national level down to the wards, stressing that no political party can thrive in an atmosphere of disunity.

Meanwhile, six federal lawmakers had on Thursday, December 5, 2024, also dumped their various parties for the ruling party at the centre on the floor of the House of Representatives. The defectors include former Delta State Governor James Ibori’s daughter, Erhiatake Ibori-Suenu, who was elected on the platform of the PDP. The others were elected on the LP platform. They are Esosa Iyawe (Edo), Tochukwu Okere (Imo), Donatus Matthew (Kaduna), Bassey Akiba (Cross River), and Daulyop Fom (Plateau). All the lawmakers cited division within their parties as the main reason for their defections.

Yet, on December 10, 2024, Speaker Abbas announced the defection of Dalyop Chollom, another LP member in the House of Reps. Chollom, who represents Barkin Ladi/Riyom Federal Constituency, also defected to the APC. The lawmaker said he made the decision after reflecting on the crisis rocking the party.

Two days later, on December 12, Ajang Iliya, the House of Representatives member representing the Jos South/Jos East Federal Constituency in Plateau State, also defected from the LP to the APC.

These defections further strengthen the APC’s hold in the National Assembly as it gradually begins rebuilding ahead of the next general election in 2027.

The APC is also consolidating in some states where its support base during the last election cycle was weak. Kaduna is one of such states. Three weeks ago, Governor Uba Sani received over 200,000 defectors, including serving and former lawmakers from the main opposition party. The defectors indicated that they joined the ruling party to contribute to its success in 2027. The Christian community in the state, otherwise known as Southern Kaduna, had a running battle with former Governor Nasir El-Rufai almost throughout his eight-year tenure.

However, immediately after he took over power, Governor Sani reached out to all the political actors, especially those who had left the APC because of the former governor. This is the main reason Kaduna is witnessing a mass defection of bigwigs from the opposition parties to the ruling APC. The defectors include Senator Suleiman Hunkuyi, Senator Shehu Sani, former Governor Ramalan Yero, Senator Danjuma La’ah and 46 other political heavyweights and thousands of their supporters.

Hunkuyi described the governor as a peacemaker and a unifying factor. He said, “Governor Uba Sani has brought positive changes to governance within less than two years. He has initiated a lot of rural transformation projects. These are the things we have seen in Governor Uba Sani. He is a leader that listens and carries everyone along irrespective of ethno-religious background and political affiliation.

“Our coming into the APC will, in the coming months, signal an influx of other opposition members. I am sure the APC will be just to all of us and treat us like every other APC member. This will show people still contemplating that this is the right place to be. The APC should know we are not here to fight or cause a crisis in the ruling party; we only want justice and fairness. Chieftains of our former parties have not left us; up till a few days back, they were still reaching out to see whether they could hold us back in the PDP and other parties, but we told them we have decided to join the APC.”

Governor Sani promised he will be fair to all, whether they voted for the APC or not “because that is the oath of office that I swore to uphold as a leader”.

Similarly, hundreds of members of the NNPP opted for the APC on Tuesday, February 25, in Kano, saying they are disenchanted with the leadership style of the Kwankwasiyya movement.

The defection saw top NNPP grassroots mobilizers abandoning their party for the APC. Alhaji Abdullahi Sani Kwami, popularly known as Dollar, led a large contingent of party executives, women leaders, and other stakeholders to the APC.

The defections, led by Kwami, a former vice chairman of the Gwarzo Local Government Area, have been described as a major political shake-up ahead of the next general election in the populous Northwest state. According to close watchers of Kano politics, the development may affect the party’s political fortunes in the 2027 election. Gwarzo is the hometown of Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, a staunch ally of the Kwankwasiyya leader, Alhaji Rabiu Kwankwaso.

A group of former student leaders in Kano who traditionally support the NNPP also dumped their red caps- the symbolic headgear of the Kwankwasiyya movement- for the APC. The former student leaders, led by Comrade Mohammed Nafiu Danlami, cited the Kwankwasiyya leader’s “anti-masses policies” and “dictatorial leadership style” as key reasons for their defection.

In addition, Abba Kafi Governor, a well-known youth mobiliser in Getso, Gwarzo Local Government, led his supporters to join the APC. He attributed their move to the people-centric interventions and projects championed by the APC leadership. Welcoming the defectors, Deputy Senate President Senator Barau Jibrin, a prominent APC leader in the state, lauded their decision, saying they made the right move. He said, “Congratulations on leaving a mushroom political party for a national political party known globally, where your freedom is guaranteed, and you are as free as the air.”

Jibrin described the NNPP as a party in decline, particularly in Kano Central, where he claimed it was only known in a few wards and non-existent in Kano North. He added that even in Kano South key, NNPP members were already moving to the APC.

He promised to mentor and support the youth leaders, emphasising the importance of guiding young and educated citizens toward meaningful political participation. He said: “They don’t belong there. They belong here, where they have free space to be what they want to be in life. They have been freed and liberated from the bondage of the mushroom political party.”

The defections are a significant blow to the NNPP in Kano, the only state where it had enjoyed strong grassroots support. However, Sunusi Surajo Kwankwaso, the political adviser to Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, played down the significance of the recent defection. He said the NNPP is also receiving thousands of APC members into its fold. He added that the party recently welcomed thousands of APC members from the Tudun Wada and Gwarzo Local Government Areas.

He said people are joining the APC in the Kano North Senatorial District because the senator representing the zone is deceiving them with money. He said: “We do not offer money to those who defect to our party. Anyone joining the NNPP is doing so because of the developmental and progressive initiatives of Abba Kabir Yusuf or the ideology of Kwankwasiyya. On the other hand, most of the people joining the APC now are simply seeking political appointments. They rushed into our party in large numbers before we won the elections in Kano. So, this is normal in politics.”

After dislodging the PDP from Cross River State, the APC is trying to make inroads into the South-South geo-political zone. In Delta State, for instance, the latest key PDP member to dump the party for the APC is Senator Ned Nwoko. Senator Nwoko officially announced his defection from the PDP to the APC on the floor of the Senate, otherwise known as the Red Chamber, on Wednesday, February 5, saying his former party is in disarray.

Some aggrieved politicians are also leaving the APC for the opposition parties. For instance, former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has just dumped the ruling party for the Social Democratic Party (SDP). Similarly, former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola and his supporters have also left the party, but he has not indicated their new party.

With the current trend of defections, the country is gradually turning into a one-party state. This trend reflects the unpredictable nature of Nigeria’s political landscape. It raises concerns about the stability and integrity of Nigeria’s party politics. The PDP Deputy National Youth Leader, Timothy Osadolor, said the defections threaten the country’s democracy. He said many politicians lack principles because they switch parties primarily for economic survival rather than for the benefit of the people.

Osadolor said: “This government is very adept, very skillful in regime security. In doing all this, they have weaponised not only hunger but also destabilised institutions that should have been able to enforce checks and balances. Most of those you see jumping from one party to the other lack principles. This is a threat to democracy. To curb this reckless defection, I think there is an urgent need to review some of our laws to nip this in the bud.”

The Executive Director of the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre, Auwal Rafsanjani, agrees that the defections threaten the country’s democracy. He decried the fact that Nigerian politics is driven by selfish interests, adding that though politicians had the right to defect to any political party, they must do so within certain limits. He said there is a need for political party reforms to ensure that parties are not used merely as tools for power-grabbing and personal agendas but as platforms to foster internal democracy and active participation.

He added, “There are legitimate reasons for leaving a party. If one no longer subscribes to the party’s principles, they cannot be compelled to remain. However, we must reform political parties so they will cease to be platforms for personal gains and power plays.”

Despite the law prohibiting indiscriminate defection from one party to another, politicians have routinely flouted it without any repercussions. This has eroded public trust in the political process. The law insists that votes cast during elections are for political parties and not for the candidates representing the parties. The corollary from the above is that when elected officials leave the political platforms they were elected on, they ought to vacate their seats. However, this has not been the case because such defections mostly favour the ruling party.

Rivers congresses: Court orders APC to maintain status quo

The state High Court sitting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, has issued an ex parte order mandating the All Progressives Congress (APC) to maintain status quo in its ongoing congresses in the state.

The order came after the party concluded its ward congress and was preparing for the local government and state congresses.

The directive was following a suit filed by some members of the party, Okwudili Ndike, Peace Oganu, and Samuel Uchegbule, who said they were not issued forms despite paying for them.

The party members named the APC and its National Chairman, Alh. Abdullahi Ganduje as the first and second defendants.

They demanded an order of interim injunction restraining the defendants and  their privies from organising the congresses.

They also sought an order restraining the APC from accepting the ward congresses and from inaugurating them.

The presiding Judge, Justice GV Obomanu ordered all parties involved in the matter to maintain the status quo pending the determination of the suit and adjourned to December 3.

  • INEC weighs four options on Rivers polls today

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the African Action Congress (AAC), the All Progressives Congress (APC) and other parties will today know their fate on the stalemated governorship poll in Rivers State.

The Independent National Electoral Commission ( INEC)  has summoned a meeting of its management to receive and consider the report of a fact-finding team it sent to the Southsouth state.

The electoral body may receive also the report on its investigation into the disruption of the poll in Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area of Bauchi State.

But top on the list of issues before INEC, as at last night, is the suspended election in Rivers State.

A source, who spoke in confidence, said: “The panel on Rivers State will on Friday submit its report to INEC management. Thereafter, the Chairman of INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu and his team will consider the findings and make a pronouncement.

“We are aware of the interest which the suspension of the elections in Rivers State has generated and we want to resolve it as soon as possible.”

There are four options before INEC, The Nation has learnt. They are:

    • whether or not to cancel the governorship and House of Assembly elections in Rivers State;
    • Restricted conduct of elections only in units, wards or areas affected by violence.
    • Announcement of collated or retrieved  results if the security situation does not permit a fresh poll;
    • declaring the results as it were and leaving the aggrieved to go to the tribunal.

According to the source, any delay in taking a decision may lead to a constitutional crisis in the state.

“INEC will be fair, just, equitable and it will be guided by the Electoral Act, 2010( as amended) in its decision on Rivers State.

“The panel has concluded its assignment. Were it not for the issuance of Certificates of Return to senators and Representatives-elect, we would have considered the report on Rivers on Thursday (yesterday).”

A statement last Sunday by INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of Information and Voter Education Committee, Mr. Festus Okoye, said: “The commission has decided to suspend all electoral processes in Rivers State until further notice.

“This is in line with Section 26  of the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended) and Clause 47(e) of the regulations and guidelines of the commission.”

As at press time, it was gathered that the team which investigated the disruption of the collation and cancellation of results in Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area of Bauchi State had concluded its assignment.

“We will look at the findings of this committee to guide the conduct of supplementary elections in the state on March 23,” the source said.

The two leading parties  – APC and PDP – have started preparations for the make-up poll ordered in six states on March 23.

The national leadership of the PDP said yesterday that the party was set for the supplementary poll in states where the elections  were declared inconclusive.

The states are: Kano, Bauchi, Benue, Sokoto, Adamawa and Plateau.

Rising from an emergency National Working Committee (NWC) meeting in Abuja yesterday, the party should demanded that INEC release the results of the elections in those states and make returns as appropriate.

In a statement after the emergency meeting, PDP spokesman Kola Ologbondiyan insisted that the party was in clear lead in the states where the poll was declared inconclusive.

He accused INEC Chairman Prof Mahmood Yakubu of bias, citing “the results of the governorship election in Ogun State where the APC candidate was declared winner even when the margin of lead between him and the runner up was lower than the number of cancelled votes”.

The main opposition party regretted that INEC denied victory for PDP governorship candidates who found themselves in similar circumstances in the affected states.

The statement reads: “The PDP found it strange that INEC can have two sets of rules in the same election for the various political parties.

“More worrisome is the resolution which arose from a meeting between some governors of the APC and President Muhammadu Buhari, where the PDP has been informed that a decision was taken to seize Adamawa, Bauchi, Benue, Plateau, Sokoto and Kano states in the March 23 scheduled supplementary election.”

The PDP said it had deliberated and interfaced with stakeholders from the various states where governorship supplementary elections have been scheduled to hold.

It added that following the deliberations, the party had mandated all its members to resist any attempt by anybody to tamper with the will of the people in their states.

The PDP said it was sure of victory in the affected states.

    KANO

In Kano, a non-governmental organisation under the auspices of Kano State Civil Society Situation Room has filed a petition against the government over alleged attempt to buy votes ahead of the March 23 poll.

The co-convener of the petition comrade Abdulrazaq Alkali told reporters shortly after submitting the petition to the zonal office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Kano, that his group was aware of the anti-graft agency’s efforts at curbing vote buying.

Alkali explained that the petition was filed to draw EFCC’s attention to alleged withdrawal from the state’s treasury.

He urged the commission to investigate his group’s allegation.

The Commissioner for Local Government, Alhaji Murtala Sule Garo, described the petition as baseless.

Garo explained that the money withdrawn by the government was released to 13 councils out of which five were not among the local governments where the extra polls will take place.

“The funds released on the 12th of March were meant for executing government developmental projects,” the commissioner explained.

    BENUE

Ahead of the make-up poll, the All Progressives Congress (APC) Elders Council has called for more security personnel to curtail violence.

The council said: “From reports available, there is a plan to disrupt the re-run, especially in APC strongholds.”

The council’s spokesman, Chief Terlumun Akputu, told reporters in Makurdi that security should be strengthened to stamp out vote buying and intimidation.

Akputu advised INEC to insist on the use of the Electronic Card Readers (ECRs) before accepting any result from polling units.

“There is where in Nigeria that APC recorded zero votes, except In Guma Local Government Area despite having candidates and agents which he said were chased out of the polling units,” the council said.

    BAUCHI

The Katagum Youth for Change (KYC) yesterday cautioned House of Representatives Speaker Yakubu Dogara against creating a crisis in the state.

It urged the Speaker and the PDP to stop misleading Nigerians on the political situation in the state.

KYC Chairman Mustapha Aleh spoke in Abuja against the backdrop of the eruption of violence in Bauchi after the governorship poll was declared inconclusive.

He said: “It is obvious that Bauchi erupted into violence after a briefing by the Speaker and PDP leaders in the state.

“We wish to warn Dogara and PDP against introducing a dangerous dimension to the politics of the state because of the desperation to make a cheap political point.

“The impression of lack of perfornance by Governor Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar that Dogara and his gang of PDP desperados try to create is false, unfounded and should be disregarded.”

  • Rivers APC wants INEC boss jailed for contempt

The All Progressives Congress (APC) and its governorship candidate in Rivers State, Pastor Tonye Cole want the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu sent to jail for contempt for allegedly refusing to obey an Appeal Court order of stay of execution.

Director, Strategic Communications for the Tonye Cole Campaign Organization, Prince Tonye T.J.T Princewill said in a statement in Abuja that the INEC boss has already been served contempt proceedings to come and explain to the court why he has refused to comply with the order of court.

Princewill said a delegation from the APC in Rivers State has served contempt proceedings on the Chairman of INEC for not being independent enough.

According to him, Yakubu is to appear in court to explain why he should not be sent to jail for disobeying subsisting court orders by excluding APC candidates in Rivers State.

He commended Rivers people for showing restraint and implored them to come out and vote as who becomes President is who determines the leaders in the state, saying “do not be distracted by INEC. If they do not put us on the ballot, that election will be repeated. It will not be an election. But the Presidential is not in doubt. All states must put in their quota towards victory. That includes us too here in Rivers State.

  • Oshiomhole dismisses members of R-APC

Mr Adams Oshiomhole, the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman, has said that the APC leadership will rather ignore members of the Reformed-APC than be bothered by their action.

He stated this on Friday in Abuja when Chairmen of the defunct Congress for Progressives Congress (CPC) paid him a visit at the party`s national secretariat.

He, however, added that the party`s leadership would only attend to its members with genuine grievances with a view to addressing them.

Oshiomhole who is just two-week-old in office, was rattled on Wednesday when some members of the party pulled out to form the Reformed All Progressives Congress (R-APC), a parallel structure.

The group, which has all members of defunct nPDP and some APC members in its fold, is led by former National Secretary of defunct CPC, Alhaji Buba Galadima.

Galadima claimed that the APC Constitution had been eroded and its recent congresses and National Convention were not transparent.

“We listerned to Buba Galadima. It is as if a very hungry bird is dancing at the centre of the road and a disgruntled drummer not far away in the bush is drumming for him.

“But this is not to say that we are not aware that there are challenges here and there, but anything about APC is considered more, much more than the sum total of all the challenges we have in many of the states.

“And by the special grace of God, we shall overcome them and we are already overcoming them, I am very confident that we can afford to ignore Buba Galadima, “ Oshiomhole   said.

He re-emphasised that he was ready to go to any length to talk to people who meant well and who had genuine grievances against the party.

Such grievances, he noted, may have arisen from communication gaps or misunderstanding or even from error of judgment on the part of anyone or even from the way the party managed things.

“Protests like these are acknowledged and we are working to resolve them, when we see people who have genius grievances, we are not ashamed to talk to them.

“We recognise that democracy is an equaliser and only people who are humble enough to engage can survive and we have been engaging, “ the APC national chairman said.

He added that the party`s leadership had been meeting with various individuals and groups who had genuine concerns on certain matters.

He hinted that progress was being made, but said that the party`s leadership knew those who do not mean well for the party, when such persons were seen.

“There are a lot of idle people who don’t have any other thing to do and once they don’t have access to national honey pot, they begin to complain.

“For me, there is no cause for alarm, nobody should panic over one Buba Galadima, whose group, I believe cannot define us in the next election in 2019.

“Nigerians are wiser. They know that corruption is fighting back and that President Muhammadu Buhari’s resolve to fight corruption must elicit a counter force and that force must find attraction in some people,“ he said.

Oshiomhole maintained that the APC would however, not be distracted by such persons, adding that President Buhari should not be distracted too.

He stressed that the President must remain focused and sustain the fight against corruption.

“I believe the rebellion will be crushed using the superior power of argument and persuading our people not to forget in a hurry where we are coming from,“ he said.

Leader of the defunct CPC state chairmen, Alhaji Umar Shuaibu said they were at the party secretariat to pledge their support to the Oshiomhole-led newly elected National Working Committee (NWC) of the APC.

He maintained that President Buhari has done enough for the country to deserve re-election in 2019, adding that Nigerians should keep faith with the Federal Government and refuse to be distracted

  • Buhari’s health condition delayed APC’s Convention

Buhari’s health condition delayed APC’s Convention

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has confirmed that the health condition  of President Muhammadu Buhari has largely been responsible for the inability of the party to hold its constitutionally mandated mid-term non elective convention, but assured that processes leading to the programme will begin on Saturday, July 29.

The party also said it has set up a nine member committee headed by Kaduna state governor, Mallam Nasir elRufai to define and work out a “shared understanding” of what it meant by restructuring as contained in its manifesto in other to give a clearer understanding of the issue.

Chairman of Nigeria Governors Forum and Zamfara state governor who addressed newsmen at the end of a meeting between the governors elected on the platform of the party and the National Working Committee however said that the the party has decided to meet with the Acting President to discuss the issue and fix a suitable date  for the convention.

When reminded of an earlier promise to meet with the Acting President after their meeting in May, Yari said even though the President is supposed to be present at the convention as leader of the party, they will still meet with the Acting President to decide on a date.

He  however noted that they were conscious of the fact the Acting President is playing a double role of he at the moment and therefore has a very busy schedule.

He explained that in view of the relationship between the executive and the legislature and the need to forge a cordial relationship within the hierarchy of the party, they decided that principal officers of the National Assembly will henceforth be part of the regular meeting with the leadership of the party.

In his opening remarks, National Chairman of the party, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun said the turn out of the governors for the meeting was a clear indication that it was becoming an avenue to mobilize opinion towards the smooth running of the party.

Governors at the meeting include Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi, Abdulaziz Yari Abubakar of Zamfara, Nasir elRufai of Kaduna, Simon Lalong of Plateau, Rochas Okorocha of Imo, Badaru Abubakar of Jigawa, Yahaya Bello of Kogi and Abdullahi Umar Ganduje of Kano, while the deputy governors of Lagos, Osun, Ogun, Nasarawa, Benue, Niger and Borneo represented their governors.

Governors of Ondo, Sokoto, Bauchi, Yobe, Adamawa, Kwara, Edo, Oyo and Katsina states were not present at the meeting and were not represented.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has lauded the initiative of Gov. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State to construct a 50-kilometre road to link coastal communities in the state with Lagos State.

According to a statement signed by Prince Abayomi Adesanya, the state APC Publicity Secretary, on Thursday in Lagos, the party described the project as “laudable and remarkable’’.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Akeredolu had on April 5 signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) to construct the road.

NAN reports that the road is expected to connect Araromi Seaside in Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State with Akodo in Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area of Lagos State.

The road is expected to be completed within two and half years.

Adesanya said, “This is laudable and remarkable, because in less than 100 days of the APC-led administration in the state, the governor has attracted such a monumental project to the state.

“The first and only MoU ever signed by NDDC with any state government within its mandate area (the Niger-Delta region).

“The people of Ilaje and the Niger-Delta areas of the state have rolled out drums to thank Akeredolu and NDDC for this laudable stride.’’

He said that when completed the road would help to decongest the Benin-Ore-Lagos Expressway.

“Once this project is completed, the people can now travel to Lagos by road in less than an hour, as against the usual four to five hours being spent through other roads to Lagos,’’ he said.

Adesanya assured the people of the state that more of such laudable projects would be executed by the Akeredolu-led government in the state
