  • KUNLE AFOLAYAN’S ‘THE CEO’ GETS LONDON GALA PREMIERE

COURTESY of Air France London in conjunction with DJAMedia and Golden Effects Pictures and Kunle Afolayan Productions (KAP), London residents will get to watch KunleAfolayan’s blockbuster movie, The CEO.

The movie which has been getting rave reviews shows at the Vue Cinema, 566 Chiswick High Rd, London,W4 5XS, Leicester Square, London, England.

The CEO revolves around five top level staff of a company selected for a retreat where the new CEO of a global company will be chosen. What starts off as cordial soon goes sour as they attempt to outdo one another to be named The CEO.

The Pan African movie reaffirms the renaissance of the new Nigerian cinema on the global landscape. The cast include Wale Ojo, Angelique Kidjo, Kemi Lala Akindoju, AurelieEliam, Jimmy Jean-Louis, Fatym Layachi, Hilda Dokubo, Peter King Nzioki and Nico Panagio.

  • The CEO: Encomiums for lead actor, Wale Ojo

The CEO: Encomiums for lead actor, Wale Ojo

For filmmaker Kunle Afolayan to have broken his rule by using an actor twice in his movies, there is definitely something about the latter.

“I searched everywhere for an actor that could fit into the role of Kola when we were casting actors for The CEO, but on Wale Ojo kept coming to my mind. As much as I tried to shove that thought aside, knowing I’d used him in Phone Swap, I just couldn’t think of any other person that fits that role. In the end I had to cast him,” Afolayan said during the curtain call of the premiere of The CEO in Paris.

Incidentally, Wale Ojo happens to be one of the best things that have happened to this new film, with many praising his acting prowess in the way he interpreted the role of Kola, the philandering, but most promising Chief Executive Officer candidate in the Pan African movie.

The notable actor, writer, singer and culture promoter played the character of Kola with so much conviction, sharing chemistry with the other actors from Africa with whom he was acting for the very first time.

If the film was a reality competition among the different African countries as represented in the movie, Wale Ojo won the show for Nigeria, and The CEO could indeed be called a Nigerian film from his point of delivery.

Here are some of the comments on social media about his performance in The CEO:

“Wale Ojo’s performance was very believable.” -Uzodinma Opkechi

“Wale Ojo is one of the most remarkable talents to have come out of Nigeria… 30 years plus and counting in the industry. As an actor, hats off.” -Don Omope

“Wale is good. And it was a wise decision he made coming back to Nigeria from the UK to show his stuff to a large audience.” -Charles Novia

“Wale Ojo killed it (claps). Kunle, you are a pace setter; job well done.” –Lanre Falana

  • The CEO that NPA needs

Perhaps, the trajectory of HadizaBala Usman, in the last few years, is akin to that of Okonkwo, the lead character of Chinua Achebe’s ‘’Things Fall Apart.’’  At 40, through solid personal achievements, the lady has soared to great heights within a short time. However, unlike Okonkwo, HajiyaHadiza is a blue blood, she also has name recognition and the lady is from the upper middle class family of intellectuals. In Nigeria, these attributes open doors for people, making most of them laid back and indolent in typical Aje Butter fashion. With Hadiza, the story is different as ‘struggle’ has been her way of life from the cradle.

Significantly, the mustard seed was sown in Zaria, at the Samaru main Campus of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), where she was born, nurtured and groomed. Specifically, HajiyaHadiza’s character was forged in the furnace of idealism, when ABU was the hot-bed of radical scholarship. More so, Dr YusufuBala Usman, her late father, was the leading light of the leftist ideology. At that time, ABU boasted of the best and the brightest minds in the intellectual world. From primary to secondary school, up to her first degree, Hadiza had lived and schooled in that environment, and naturally, the constant search for the truth, which is the essence of scholarship, has rubbed off on her over the years.

So, with a degree in Business Administration, Hadiza  went to the United Kingdom, where she bagged a Master’s degree  at  the University of Leeds in 2009. However, instead of securing a cozy job in the banking or oil and gas sectors, she opted to be a researcher at the Centre for Democratic Development and Research Training (CEDDERT).  Thereafter, she went to the Bureau for Public Enterprises (BPE), where she met with Malam Nasir El Rufai, the then Director General of the agency.

In 2003, when El Rufai became Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Hadiza joined him as Special Assistant on Project Implementation. Afterwards, she   plunged into full time activism and politics.

Significantly, HajiyaHadiza and a few patriots, across geo-political and religious divides, formed the Good Governance Group, a policy think tank that was committed to accountability. Severally, the group had x-rayed policy issues, critiqued state and federal budgets as well as highlighted abuse of office. Hadiza, according to reports, was the engine room of the group as she and her colleagues, on several platforms, have held governments to account and criticized sundry infractions.

Thereafter, she crossed over to politics and, along with like minds, teamed up with General Muhammadu Buhari to form the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC). Specifically, she contested for the House of Representatives, especially in Musawa/Matazu Federal Constituency. However, the PDP candidate defeated her in a controversial manner. But instead of contesting his victory, she moved on to other party engagements. In particular, HajiyaHadiza and other CPC stalwarts, including El Rufai, midwifed the historic merger with Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) as well as a rump of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

Ironically, in spite of all these, HajiyaHadiza had remained largely in the shadows but for the Chibok school girls’ saga, where female students of Government Secondary School Chibok in Borno State, were kidnapped. Hadiza, Ms Oby Ezekwesili, former Minister of Education and other activists had  teamed up to form the Bring Back Our Girls(BBOG) campaign, an advocacy group that raised awareness on the plight of the Chibok girls. The activists, at that time, risked their lives and limbs to protest the inertia of the Jonathan administration over the abduction. Regularly, the group held vigils, addressed the press and staged peaceful demonstrations around Unity Fountain Abuja, sometimes with tear gas canisters flying over their heads.

Significantly, after President Goodluck Jonathan’s defeat, Hadiza became the Chief of Staff of Governor El Rufai, where she took charge of the goings on of Sir Kashim Ibrahim House, as Kaduna Government House is referred to. In that position, she re-organised the seat of power, drew up an elaborate organogram and insisted that political appointees deliver on their assigned schedules. Particularly, she led by example and instead of threatening and throwing her weight around, Hajiya rebuked erring staff in private. In fact, the former Chief of Staff, according to reports, was the voice of restraint within El Rufai’s kitchen cabinet. Always, Hadiza resorted to the force of reason, instead of forcing people to be reasonable. In my opinion, this attribute will help Hadiza in her new national assignment. However, even before   settling down,   several projectiles are being fired at her.

Specifically, critics have picked holes on her appointment and in summary; their arguments can be reduced into three points. First, they argued that Hadiza lacks the experience to head NPA and that her Curriculum Vitae is not rich enough for the appointment. Second, her appointment is seen in some quarters as another example of the president’s nepotism as both Hadiza and Buhari are from Katsina State. Third, some critics prefer ‘’an insider’’ who knows NPA through and through, instead of a ‘neophyte’ who will spend years learning on the job.

In short, some ‘’pundits’’ have dismissed her as a square peg in a round hole, on account of her age, academic qualification and experience.

First and foremost, Section 2(a) and (c) of the constitution, the supreme law of the land, states that any Nigerian who is 40 years of age and has been educated up to at least school certificate level or its equivalent, can aspire to be president of Nigeria. At 40, with two degrees in her kitty, HajiyaHadiza is qualified to be president, let alone the Managing Director of NPA. As for nepotism, the accusation is not supported by facts because it was RotimiAmaechi, the Minister of Transport, that nominated Hadiza to the president for the post. The Minister is from Rivers and not Katsina State. In making the nomination, Amaechi was guided by the need for geographical spread in his ministry. Right now, the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) and the Nigerian Railway Corporation(NRC) are both headed by southerners and NPA, Ameachi had argued, should go to the north for equitable distribution of appointments. In any case, Alhaji Habib Abdullahi, the immediate past MD is from the north, so were his predecessors, Alhaji Sanusi Ado Bayero and Architect AminuDabo. Similarly, those who favour an insider for the top NPA job miss the point. Right now, the agency needs someone with fresh ideas,  who can think outside the box and not an MD   who has spent donkey years  doing the same thing and expecting  different results.

Above all, NPA needs a steady pair of hands and someone with integrity, in order to reposition the six major ports under it. In this regard, Hadiza has earned her spurs as an Administrative Secretary of the Buhari Presidential Campaign Organisation, a member of APC Strategy Committee and the Director of Kaduna State APC Campaign Council. As Achebe noted in Things Fall Apart,   ‘when a child washes his hands, he can eat with a king’. Clearly, HajiyaHadiza’s clean hands are needed to turn NPA around.

    Bayero, writes from Kaduna State.

The CEO: Colleagues support their own

Knowing how difficult it is to recoup investment on movies, especially in the face of endemic piracy, colleagues of filmmaker Kunle Afolayan have been buying tickets for others to go see his latest movie, The CEO, which was released in cinemas last Friday.

Recall that during the premiere of the movie at the Eko Hotel and Suites on Sunday July 10, Afolayan had pleaded with pirates to spare his movie this time, saying he borrowed N50million from Bank of Industry as part of the monies spent on the movie.

Although succour came the way of the filmmaker who got sponsors like Air France, Peugeot Automobile, Adrian Homes and Securities and K Square Securities as ease to the high budget movie, he is yet to start paying the bank loan which he said is due in less than a year.

Last year, a huge protest followed the unauthorized replication and sales of his award-winning film, October 1, in Lagos, which he said cost him a fortune.

Efforts are being made by many to ensure that the filmmaker makes substantial amount of money from cinema sales before being produced into the more piratable DVD stage.

“This is to confirm a booking of 11 tickets for distinguished colleagues at Filmhopuse cinema Surulere by 6pm to watch The CEO… Its time to show love and support,” said Chris Ekejimbe on Friday.

“I will be at SPA in Port Harcourt…Destination Filmhouse… Please who is in PH? Let me know how many tickets to give out,” said another filmmaker and founder of Igbo Film Forum, Eze Chuma.

The support train is moving across the media and entertainment industry, with Cool FM and Wazobia FM giving 20 tickets to lucky listeners as their little contribution, while also talking about the movie on air to move traffic to the cinemas.

Meanwhile the movie has over the weekend sold out in Ikeja Mall, Genesis Duluxe, Silverbird cinema etc, with Afolayan moving around the cinemas with Nigerian cast such as Wale Ojo and Kemi Lala-Akindoju for a Meet and Greet.

The CEO sells out in cinemas

Following its release on Friday, July 15 in cinemas across Nigeria, one of 2016’s most anticipated crime thriller movies, The CEO, has continued to sell out. The movie is the most recent film from ace movie producer Kunle Afolayan.

However, set to ensure the streak continues, Afolayan, yesterday took to social media to mobilise fans to go and see the movie and get a chance to meet him and some other casts.

A ku isinmi o!’ Afolayan, whose portfolio of successful movies include The Figurine, Phone Swap and October 1, greeted in Yoruba language on his Instagram page.

The CEO movie is still showing at all cinemas in Nigeria and still selling out. Myself , Wale Ojo and Kemi Lala will be at E-Centre Ozone cinema Yaba this afternoon to welcome you all and from there to Silverbird cinema in Festac town. Let’s celebrate the Sunday together.”

Set in Lagos and other African cities, The CEO brings out the intrigues in the course of electing a CEO for a company, top executives who come for a business trip start to die one after the other. The movie also stars Angelique Kidjo, Fatym Layachi, Nico Panagio, Peter King, Hilda Dokubo and others.

  • WE TOOK A WISE DECISION IN SUPPORTING ‘THE CEO’, SAYS BANK OF INDUSTRY

WHEN penultimate week, The CEO, the latest offering from the popular Kunle Afolayan Production (KAP), premiered aboard an Air France flight to Paris, it was a celebration of the several individuals and institutions involved in the film project. One of the partners, the foremost Nigeria’s developmental bank, Bank of Industry (BoI) got all the accolades for providing a N50million loan to the filmmaker from its creative industry fund scheme tagged BoI NollyFund.

Captured in the in-flight razzmatazz and the glamorous premiere of The CEO which opened the 4th edition of Nollywood Week Film Festival (NWFF) in Paris was the Bank’s delegation, which included Mr. Babatunde Joseph,Divisional Head, Large Enterprises and Mrs. Uche Nwuka, Head, Creative Desk and Solomon Sunday Tommy, Corporate Communications Officer.

“I took a loan of N50million from the bank to fund this film, and this was made possible by these people,” said Afolayan as he invited Mr. Babatunde and Mrs. Nwuka to the podium during the curtain call at the Cinema L’Arlequin, Paris, venue of NWFF. “Thank you very much for your support,” he said amidst laud applause from the crowd, just as he advised filmmakers in the Diaspora to avail themselves of the opportunity of producing high budget quality films by approaching the Bank for NollyFund.

Elated about the commercial potential of the film which is billed to hit the cinema on July 15, Mr. Babatunde, the leader of the BoI delegation was overwhelmed by the positive reception from the home and foreign audience who saw the film first-hand.

“Honestly, I am exceedingly glad and happy to be a part of history here today. For us in the Bank of Industry, we believe in the potential of the creative industry as a high impact sector that can be used to promote the Nigerian brand all over the world, and of course, as a very good tool to create employment among the youth and the generality of Nigerians.

“Coming here has proved beyond reasonable doubt that we took a wise decision in supporting this project. I never knew that when we started the journey it was going to be a trail blazer. This is indeed a remarkable adventure and we are glad that we are a part of it,” he said.

It was an unprecedented crowd of French film enthusiasts at the cinema who apparently enjoyed one of the best offerings from Nigeria. More so, the crowd connected so well with the film which not only has French-speaking actors but which was also fully sub-titled in French. Interestingly, news of The CEO was all over the media in France.

The film tells the story of TransWire Communications, a global phone network with major operations in Nigeria. The CEO has retired and the Global Chairman decides to send five nominees among his most senior level staff across Africa on a Leadership course in order to determine which one to appoint as the new CEO of Nigeria.

All five arrive from their respective destinations and check into the beach resort where the course is holding. Although they all appear cordial and chummy with each other, they all know what is at stake – they each desperately want the CEO’s chair.  And to this purpose, they attempt to covertly outdo one another through-out the duration of the course.

Mr. Babatunde also provided insight into the BoI NollyFund, during a roundtable discussion tagged Entrepreneurship & Cinema: Finding Funding, which ran a documentary on Tony Elumelu Entrepreneurship Programme (TEEP) and had discussions with Kunle Afolayan, Parminder Vir, Director of Tony Elumelu Foundation and Arthur Dieffenthaler, Commercial Manager of Air France.

Among the cast and crew of The CEO who graced the event include Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter and entertainer from Benin Republic, Angélique Kidjo; Haitan actor and model Jimmy Jean-Louis; consummate actor, Wale Ojo; French-Ivorian actress and model, Aurelie Eliam; South African actor and presenter, Nicolaos Panagioto-poulos; Nigerian actress, Kemi Lala Akindoju; Moroccan star, Fatim Layachi as well as Nigerian singer, Adekunle Gold, who performed one of his hits in the film.

Other celebrities who attended the festival include Odunlade Adekola, Muyiwa Ademola, OC Ukeje, Adesua Etomi, Linda Ejiofor, Ijeoma Grace Agu, Ramsey Nouah, Ali Baba, Lola Maja and Kehinde Bankole.

  • The CEO dazzles with sky experience

The CEO dazzles with sky experience

Until the D-Day, no one could tell exactly how it would turn out. But like a show that it was meant to be, the premiere of Kunle Afolayan’s movie, The CEO, aboard an Air France flight AF149, blew the mind of many with epic milieu.

With robust fanfare, razzmatazz and celebratory details that were second to none,  Afolayan blazed the trail again last Wednesday with a unique sky experience and perhaps the first-of-its-kind in Africa, as passengers joined the cast and crew and other celebrities to enjoy first-hand, the most publicised in-flight screening of the pan-African movie en-route Paris.

It all started with a red carpet at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport’s departure arena, where stars of the movie who converged from different parts of Africa, alighted from the elegant Peugeot 508 and walked into scores of camera flashes and waiting microphones.

Guests were shuttled from 6pm from the designated open field close to the airport car park, a section clearly marked ‘Peugeot Pick-up Point.’

While other airlines’ passengers might have been curious at the convergence of the army of stars and enormous branding of the airport area for the occasion, those flying Air France that night seemed to have fore knowledge of their participation in the historic premiere on the spectacular Airbus A340-300.

The passengers that had earlier checked in their luggage preceded by the usual immigration/customs procedures towards a pre-boarding cocktail, hobnobbing, photo-session and music from a standby Nigerian disc jockey.

It was not a smooth take-off that night, no thanks to the weather. But perhaps like Amanda Peet said; “I think getting drunk is the key to flying comfortably. A couple of Bloody Marys or several glasses of champagne, and suddenly it’s like you’re on a roller coaster.”

This could have helped to assuage this snag for most passengers who had rocked the earlier cocktail.

Afolayan, a brand ambassador of Air France took the microphone to announce to all that it was time for them to see his movie, taking them through the screen’s navigation where the film was scheduled under World Class movie.

And like Amelia Earhart posited; “Flying might not be all plain sailing, but the fun of it is worth the price.” It was even more fun for passengers, who for a moment forgot the occasional turbulence, by laughing and cheering the intrigues of The CEO  movie, while cruising an altitude of 35,000ft above the sea level.

After the 105minutes movie, the filmmaker also conducted the curtain call by taking cast and crew and Air France officials round each cabin where he introduced them to the passengers, some of who asked questions and gave commendations about the movie. This was followed by an after party at the in-flight lounge with more to eat and drink, until the plane’s descent into Charles De Gaulle International Airport, Thursday morning.

The second leg of what could be described as Kunle Afolayan’s moments of glory happened at the Cinema L’Arlequin, 76 rue de Rennes, Paris where The CEO opened the fourth edition of the fast-rising Nollywood Week Film Festival, which started on Thursday evening.

The cast who graced the event include Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter and entertainer from Benin Republic, Angélique Kidjo; Haitan actor and model Jimmy Jean-Louis; consummate actor, Wale Ojo; French-Ivorian actress and model, Aurelie Eliam; South African actor and presenter, Nicolaos Panagioto-poulos; Nigerian actress, Kemi Lala Akindoju; Moroccan star, Fatim Layachi as well as Nigerian singer, Adekunle Gold, who performed one of his hits in the film.

Other celebrities who attended the festival include Odunlade Adekola, Muyiwa Ademola, OC Ukeje, Adesua Etomi, Linda Ejiofor, Ijeoma Grace Agu, Ramsey Nouah, Ali Baba, Lola Maja and Kehinde Bankole.

Nollywood Week Film Festival Paris is an exclusive showcase of Nigerian movies to French audience and distributors. It is organised as an annual event by Okada Media, headed by France-based Serge Noukoué and Nadira Shakur.

“What is happening tonight has never happened before anywhere in the world,” said Afolayan of the in-flight premiere.

“We decided to come up with this initiative to show the world that Africans are innovative, and that Nigerians are special people.”

He noted that The CEO is an experiment carried out in the hope that the film will cut across all African countries as a pan-African movie.

The CEO as an experiment to develop value for African cinema. It is something that I am very passionate about. This all started as a kid, every time I see the pictures of my father and his contemporaries at film festivals.

“It became a concern as I have not seen any film from neighbouring African countries brought to Nigeria for screening; hence there is a gap among African countries. The CEO is an experiment that I hope will do the magic. The original cast was Nigeria, Togo, Ghana and one Francophone cast. But after my trip to Egypt, it became an eye opener after meeting with colleagues, where we had a co-production meeting,” he added.

Continuing, Afolayan said “with close to 500 cinemas in South Africa, if my films could screen in 200 cinemas, it would be great, as this is what cinema distribution can do to the success of a filmmaker. If we can lock down Africa, then we do not need Hollywood.”

Set on a beautiful beach resort on the outskirts of Lagos, Nigeria, The CEO follows five top executives from across Africa who are dispatched on a one-week leadership retreat by a multinational telecommunications firm to determine who gets selected as the new CEO. Things go awry when one by one the executives are eliminated in sudden death circumstances, with the finger pointing to the last two remaining executive as prime suspects.

“This year we received an unprecedented amount of submissions of great quality which made the selection process very difficult,” Executive Director Serge Noukoué stated, adding that this is “a great sign that the industry is heading in the right direction.”

Organisers urged intended participants to visit  www.nollywoodweek.com for more information on the event which take place at the Cinema l’Arlequin.
