The Diocese of Lagos West celebrated its 25th anniversary with a grand ceremony held on Wednesday, at Archbishop Vinning Memorial Church Cathedral (AVMCC), Oba Akinjobi Way, Ikeja GRA.

The event drew clergy, dignitaries and members of the diocese in a display of thanksgiving and unity.

The celebration was a reflection on the diocese’s journey since its establishment in 1999. The Diocese of Lagos West was established on November 20, 1999, following the vision of the late Archbishop Dr. Joseph Abiodun.

Initially carved out from the Diocese of Lagos, it encompassed six archdeaconries: Ikeja, Agege, Badagry, Ojo, Shomolu and Ikorodu. The diocese has since grown exponentially, now comprising 30 archdeaconries, 311 churches and a clergy strength of 379.

The Archbishop of Lagos Province and Bishop of Lagos West, Most Rev. (Dr.) James Odedeji, presided over the event, delivering an inspiring sermon that was about gratitude to God for His faithfulness over the years.

“This silver jubilee is not just a celebration of the past, but also a call to remain steadfast in our commitment to the work of the Lord,” he said.

He reflected on the diocese’s origin, saying: “Twenty-five years ago, the Lord knelt in the fields and fetched this good seed from the lapses of nature’s western light. Today, it has flourished with good fruits and gifts sent from heaven above.”

Personalities in attendance included religious leaders from across the Anglican Communion. Goodwill messages were delivered by representatives from sister dioceses, who hailed Lagos West for its contributions to the growth of Anglican Church in Nigeria.

Highlight of the ceremony was the unveiling of the Diocesan Anniversary Compendium, showcasing 25 years of impactful ministry and service. The publication, rich with stories, photographs and testimonies, was received warmly from attendees.

Revd, Dr. Peter Adebiyi, in 2013, has promised that the diocese would continue to work assiduously towards preparing members for the second coming of Christ by preaching the undiluted word in its almost 400 parishes.
