“The names of other board members include Mr. Olawale, Osuolale Timothy, Dr. Mohammed Yinusa, Mr. Waheed Adeyanju, Mr. Ibrahim Khaleel, Dr. Ifeoma Anyanwutaku, Mrs. Dutse Aminu, “she said.

  • UCL: Tottenham Hotspur stun Manchester City to advance after 7-goal thriller

Tottenham Hotspur lost 3-4 on Wednesday but reached the semi-finals of the 2018/2019 UEFA Champions League on away goals after a 4-4 aggregate score against Manchester City.

Spurs, who won the first leg 1-0, will now face Ajax Amsterdam of Holland for a place in the final match against Liverpool or FC Barcelona.

In a dramatic finale to an astonishing contest, Manchester City had a stoppage time goal from Raheem Sterling, which would have sent them through, ruled out for offside.

VAR review confirmed that Sergio Aguero was offside in the build-up.

In a breathtaking quarter-final second leg game in Manchester, City took a fourth minute lead through a beautiful curling shot from Sterling.

But Spurs struck back with two quick goals from Son Heung-min — the second of them a magnificent finish.

The manic opening period continued when Bernardo Silva brought the home side level in the 11th minute with a deflected shot.

Then, Sterling struck again to make it 3-2 in the 21st minute.

However, while a thundering strike from Aguero in the 59th minute put Manchester City in the driving seat again, they were again stunned in the 73rd minute.

Spurs substitute Fernando Llorente bundled in a Kieran Trippier corner kick to restore the London club’s advantage through away goals.(Reuters/NAN)

  • PSG again made to wait for Ligue 1 title after Nantes defeat

Paris St-Germain (PSG) missed another opportunity to seal their eighth French Ligue 1 title when their much-changed side were beaten 2-3 at strugglers Nantes on Wednesday.

Victory would have put PSG out of reach at the top of the standings with six games left, but Dani Alves’s opener was cancelled out by Diego Carlos.

Then, Majeed Waris and an own goal by Alves gave the Canaries all three points at La Beaujoire.

PSG’s Metehan Guclu reduced the arrears a minute from full-time in his maiden Ligue 1 appearance.

It was an embarrassing performance from runaway leaders PSG, who have 81 points from 32 games and lead second-placed Lille by 17 points.

Thomas Tuchel’s side, who have now picked up only one point from their last three Ligue 1 outings, will be crowned champions on Sunday if they beat Monaco at home.

PSG were without the injured Neymar, Edinson Cavani, Thiago Silva, Marquinhos and Thomas Meunier.

It was a situation that led the German coach to complain about the lack of depth of his squad last weekend.

Marco Verratti and Juan Bernat were suspended.

Also, Kylian Mbappe and Angel Di Maria have rested ahead of Sunday’s league game against Monaco and the April 27 French Cup final against Stade Rennes.

Their firepower was sorely missed as Eric Choupo-Moting barely threatened throughout, apart from when he hit the post in the second half.

Alves, however, opened the scoring after 19 minutes with a splendid long-range lob after collecting a cross from Leandro Paredes.

Yet Carlos headed home the equaliser four minutes later as PSG, who suffered a 5-1 humiliation at Lille last Sunday, looked shaky.

Waris put the hosts ahead a minute before the interval when he deflected a team mate’s shot past Gianluigi Buffon.

Nantes doubled their advantage six minutes into the second half as Carlos’s attempt from a corner kick deflected in off Alves.

Guclu, 20, celebrated his first top-flight appearance by finding the net with a fine low shot from inside the box.

The result lifted Nantes up to 14th on 37 points, 12 above the relegation zone.(Reuters/NAN)

  • No agreement with IMF on removal of fuel subsidy – Minister

The Minister of Finance, Mrs Zainab Ahmed, on Wednesday refuted media reports that the Federal Government had agreed with the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) advice on the removal of fuel subsidy.

The minister stated this when she fielded questions from State House correspondents after the meeting of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) which was chaired by President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

She said that the government could only remove subsidy on fuel after having enough buffers to cushion the negative effects of the removal on ordinary citizens.

“Let me say that last week when we had the IMF/World Bank meeting, there was just one interactive session with Nigerian journalists.

“We didn’t have any session to discuss subsidy. It was in an interview that someone raised a question based on the Article 4 Report of the IMF.

“What they asked was whether we were going to remove fuel subsidy and whether we agreed with the IMF’s conclusion on subsidy removal.

“So, let me say that everywhere in the world where IMF does its review, it will always give advice because that’s the purpose of the review.

“And their advice is when you give subsidy – whether it is fuel or power, their advice is always ‘look at how you can exit doing that’. And that’s the same advice they gave Nigeria.

“So, when I was asked, I said we agreed with that advice. We need to find how we can exit fuel subsidy. But how do we do that?

“We do that only when we have enough buffers to cushion the effects of the removal for our people.

“It is up to the Executive in support with the legislature to agree on what those buffers are,’’ she added.

The minister maintained that even though the government periodically discussed the issue of subsidy under the Economic Management Team, it never contemplated removing the subsidy.

“We should not be contemplating removing the subsidy because, indeed when we do, there will be people that will suffer. So, we are not yet there.

“We discussed this periodically under the Economic Management Team. But we still haven’t found a formula that works for Nigeria. And you know that Nigeria is unique. What works for Ghana might not work here.(NAN)

  • Fayemi decries bloody herdsmen-farmers clash in Ekiti

Gov. Kayode Fayemi on Wednesday condemned the death of two persons which followed alleged invasion of farmlands by some suspected Fulani herdsmen in Iyemero Ekiti community, in Ikole Local Government Area of Ekiti.

The  governor, represented by the new State Commissioner for Information, Mr Muyiwa Olumilua, gave the condemnation during a condolence visit to the town.

The governor said his government would do everything within its powers to prevent similar occurence in furure.

He also assured that every necessary step would be taken to nab the killers and bring them to justice.

Fayemi said government would pay the hospital bills of the victims.

” We sympathise with you, because lives of Ekiti people are precious to us in this government

“As part of the ways to arrest this situation, the governor has begun the construction of a police post in Iyemero.

“We are assuring you that something like this won’t happen again,”  the governor said.

“The governor knows that there is loss of lives and that is why we are here  to commiserate with the town.”

“But in spite of this provocative attack, they should remain calm and be law abiding, particularly the farmers

” What we are told is that it was an armed robbery issue, according to findings and reports but whatever dimension or form,  it must have emerged , we are prepared to tackle it,” he assured.(NAN)

This is coming just as the traditional ruler of the town, Olu of Iyemero, Oba Ebenezer Ogungbemi, frowned at an alleged twist in the police report  of the incidence described as mere armed robbery where no one died.

The monarch insisted that two of his subjects actually died in the attack allegedly carried out by the suspected herders, in  a farmstead under the town .

The monarch dismissed the claim by the Commissioner of Police, Mr Asuquo Amba, earlier in the day, that preliminary reports indicated that what hapened was robbery.

Some suspected  herders on Monday allegedly invaded a farmstead called Eda, in Iyemero Ekiti , and shot a seven-year-old boy during a raid and a couple, after which the husband later died in the hospital.

But the town’s monarch insisted that two persons were killed while receiving the delegation sent by the governor to commiserate with the town.

Oba Ogungbemi said the victims told him that herders who had been having a running battle with the farmers perpetrated the dastardly act.

“They invaded the community at midnight and shot dead a seven-year-old boy.

” They also shot  a couple in the other house and the husband has died after they were rushed to the Ikole general hospital and the bullets could not be extracted from his body early enough.

“They have removed the bullets from  the body of the wife and she has been referred  to the Federal Teaching Hospital, Ido Ekiti for treatment.

” What we know is that, they escaped through the Ikole-Itapaji-Iyemero-Eruku route to Kwara after their nefarious act, it is a fact that we have a porous border.

” My people should be on alert and we are already mobilising the local hunters to work with the security agencies to tame the perpetrators,”  the traditional ruler said.

Oba  Ogungbemi restated his calls for the establishment of a police station in the town to curb such activities.

“The correct information now is that , two people had died. People can’t go to their camp, because they are afraid .

” About  60 of them have been displaced and they are  here in my palace till today(Wednesday) before they left,” he said.

  • Police to charge LADOL guard with murder over killing of Korean

Following the fatal shooting of a Korean employee of SHI-MCI FZE at the LADOL Free Zone on April 8, the police have resolved to charge the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) personnel guarding the LADOL Free Zone for murder.

The NSCDC operative also shot and killed his colleague guarding the free zone moments before he shot the Korean employee.

The decision to charge the gunman was the outcome of a police report issued by a Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge SCIID, Yaba, (DCP), Yetunde O. Longe, dated April 16, 2019.

The gunman was detained by guards and employees of SHI-MCI FZE after he had carried out this killing.

The case was then transferred to the State Criminal Investigations and Intelligence Department of the Nigeria Police Force for investigation.

The police investigation found the gunman, Innocent Oshemi shot and killed the Korean SHI-MCI employee with his official G5 rifle while on duty at the LADOL Free Zone.

The investigating team took statements from the witnesses to the incident and visited the scene of the shooting.

The coroner confirmed the victim died as a result of injuries received from the gunshot, including ‘penetrating missile injury to the body.’

On careful consideration of the evidence gathered by the investigating team, the Police established a case of murder of the Korean SHI-MCI FZE employee against the gunman.

He will therefore be charged with murder and the case file will be forwarded to the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Samsung Heavy Industries Nigeria (SHIN) had at a press conference called for transparent justice for family of the victim in the case.

At a press-conference in Lagos attended by family of the deceased Korean victim, Managing Director of SHIN, Jejin Jeon said: “SHIN would ensure that LADOL and the NSCDC are held accountable for any organisational and management failing that allowed the gunman to carry out this terrible crime in the LADOL Free Zone.”

Jeon also showed CCTV of the shooting of the guard and Korean employee to journalists at the conference.

The CCTV clearly showed the LADOL guard fired deliberately at his NSCDC colleague, killing him with three shots at the scene.

He then moved to a different location where he also deliberately shot the Korean employee working in a crawler crane within the SHI-MCI yard.

SHI stated the CCTV and the decision of the Police to charge the suspect with murder were further proof that statements by LADOL and the NSCDC after the shooting that the shootings were in error are false.

In a statement on Wednesday, the Chief Operating Officer of SHIN, Mr. Frank Ejizu, commended the Deputy Commissioner, DCP Yetunde O. Longe and her team for their thorough investigation of the evidence of the case.

‘’This will result in the perpetrator of this terrible crime being charged for his acts. We invite the Director of Public Prosecutions to conduct a transparent and fair assessment of the evidence and to ensure that justice is done and seen to be done.

“Justice is important for the victims, for their families and also for all the employees working in the LADOL Free Zone, who are understandably fearful for their safety.

“The international business community will also be watching this case closely to determine whether Nigeria remains a safe working environment for their employees,” Ejizu explained

  • Bill to override President’s veto on budget passes second reading in Senate

The 1999 Constitution of Nigeria, (Fourth Alteration, No. 28) Bill to mandate the President and governor of a state to lay annual budget 90 days to end of a fiscal year, has passed second reading in the Senate.

This followed presentation of the bill, which was sponsored by the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu and presented at plenary by Leader of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan.

The bill is meant to ensure that Nigeria reverts to the January to December budget cycle.

The bill, which was rejected by the president in 2018, seeks to amend the 1999 Constitution by making it mandatory for the President and Governor of a state to lay the annual budget estimates before parliament, three months to the end of a financial year.

It also mandates the national assembly to pass the budget before commencement of the next financial year.

President Buhari declined assent to the constitution amendment bill on the grounds that Section 2 (b) and 3 (b) of the proposal appeared not to take full cognisance of the provisions of Section 58 (4) of the 1999 constitution.

However, the Technical Committee on Declined Assent to Bills chaired by Sen. David Umaru, said the bill was not in conflict with the constitution, as put forward by the President.

Umaru said the bill would ensure that the budget is “laid not later than 90 days to the end of a financial year. The legislative intent behind this bill is to ensure that we run a normal financial year.

“Therefore, the provision of section 58(4) which Mr. President made reference to, does not apply in this regard.

“On the whole, we respectfully submit that the bill is not in conflict with the provision of Section 58(4) of the Constitution as implied by Mr President.

“It is, therefore, our concerted view that the senate should override Mr President’s veto,” he said.

Meanwhile, five other constitution amendment bills earlier rejected by the President  have also passed second reading.

They are: The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999(Fourth Alteration, No. 8) Bill, 2018; Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999(Fourth Alteration, No. 15) Bill, 2018 and Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999(Fourth Alteration, No. 20) Bill, 2018.

Others are: Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999(Fourth Alteration, No.22) Bill, 2018 and Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999(Fourth Alteration, No. 24) Bill.

The President of the Senate, Dr Bukola Saraki, referred all bills to the Committee on Constitutional Review, with no time-frame for submission of the reports.

Unlike the budget timeline bill, which will not require presidential assent if it scales through in both Senate and the House of Representatives, the five other bills will be re-presented to the President for assent if approved by the National Assembly.

Section 58 (5) of the 1999 Constitution provides that two-third of both legislative chambers of the National Assembly (73 senators and 240 members of House of Representatives) are required to override the President’s veto.(NAN)

  • ACF to FG: take fight to criminals, ends killings

Mouthpiece of Northern Nigeria, the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has risen from its National Executive Council meeting, asking the Federal Government to take fight to the criminals responsible for killings across the country and take measures that will restore peace in the security threatened states across Nigeria.

This is also as it lambasted Governors of the Northern states, for lack of commitment towards addressing out of school children, which it said, has given rise to number of Almajiri children roaming the streets in the region to over 10 million.

The meeting presided over by the ACF Vice Chairman, Sen. Abubakar Girei, on behalf of Chairman, Alhaji Musa Liman Kwande, lamented that; attitude of Northern states governors towards the development of education is unfortunate.

A communique issued at the end of the Wednesday meeting by its National Publicity Secretary, Muhammad Ibrahim Biu, said the quarterly meeting discussed exhaustively security challenges especially the runaway banditry involving kidnappings and killings of innocent people on the highways and frequent attacks on communities giving rise to growing death toll in States of Zamfara, Katsina, Sokoto, Kaduna and Taraba.

ACF while noting that, the underlying causes of insecurities differ from one geopolitical zone to another, empahised the need for government to consciously develop appropriate measures to contain the situation.

According to the communique, “The Council noted the effort of the security agencies and urged them to do more and take the war to the criminals that have continued to make life unbearable to our people.

“The Council calls upon Federal Government to take drastic measures that will restore normalcy, peace and harmony in the affected States in order to assuage the fears of the people in particular Zamfara state where the bandit’s activities have been most cruel and devastating to the socioeconomic and political life of the people.

“The Council also notes with concern the most recent communal clashes between the Tiv and Jukun communities in Benue and Taraba states respectively with attendant loss of lives and destruction of properties on both sides.

Read also: Nigeria at war with itself, says ACF scribe

“The Council condemned this unnecessary enmity between communities that have peacefully co-existed over the years and called on the States affected to put in a peacebuilding mechanism that will ensure harmony among the various groups.

“The Council notes with concern the recent communal clash between Mada ethnic group and Fulani settlement in Akwanga Local Government Area of Nasarawa State and condemns such heinous crimes. It calls on the Security agencies to fish out the perpetrators and bring them to justice.

“Council also appeal to the communities to avoid using reprisal attacks as a way of addressing concerns, since such reprisals make victims of those who know nothing about the feuds. It therefore, appeals for due process in addressing such grievances among the various communities.” It said.

On out of school children, ACF said, “On the issue of more than 10 million children that are out of school in the North, the Council noted with concern the increase in the number of Almajiris and children roaming the streets and the unfortunate attitude of our states governors towards the development of education.

“Recently the Emirs and Chiefs in the North organized a conference on this burning issue where it discussed and issued a communique on how the Northern States should tackle the situation. Unfortunately, very few states attended the conference or even send representatives.

“Furthermore, the Minister of Education recently lamented the attitude of States government to access funds at the Universal Basic Education Commission for primary education development by paying their counterpart funding.

“This is an unfortunate development, Council therefore appealed to the Northern States government to seriously address this out-of-school children menace to avoid further escalation of insecurity and other vices that have bedeviled the North. Illiteracy, poverty and drug abuses are a result of poor education and nonchalant attitude of our leaders to good governance,” said ACF.
