  • ‘I kill for money, mystic power’

    Thirty years old alleged Benue serial killer and kidnap kingpin Iorwuese Kpila said he killed his victims for money and mystic powers.

    He disclosed that he has so far killed 16 people and Buried them in a mass graves and planted cassava on them.

    The suspect disclosed this Friday when he was paraded before news men alongside other members of his gang by state Commissioner of Police Mukaddas Garba.

    The suspects who are seven in number explained how they used to lure their victims who are mostly Okada riders and before killing them.

    “We will tell Okada riders to drop us at a certain location and immediately we reach there I and my gang members will grabbed the victim and strangulate him with a rope, dig a grave, burry him and plant cassava on top of the grave, thereafter we sell the machine to a buyer,” Kpila said.

    He said he had been killing for rituals, money and mystical power, adding that that “the ‘Queen’ who is a spirit told him to kill about 18 persons before he will have powers to appear and disappear.”

    Even though he claimed to have operated in Ushongo for three months, but bodies exhumed seems to have been buried for more than a year.

    Benue State Commissioner of Police Mukaddas Garba said investigation is still on but so far seven suspects have been so far arrested.

    The Police commissioner appealed to members of the public to support the police by giving information about criminals and their activities.

  • Tambuwal swears in 40 Special Advisers

    No fewer than 40 Special Advisers, including four women, were on Friday sworn in by Sokoto Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal.

    He called on them to brace up by giving useful and human- oriented advice for the development of the state.

    The governor urged the appointees to consider their appointments as a call for serve humanity with commitment.

    Tambuwal spoke while administering the oath of office on the newly appointed advisers at the International Conference Centre, Sokoto.

    According to him: ” We all owe the state a duty to advance it’s course to prosperity.

    ” Therefore, we have to join hands to make our state a shining example.

  • FMDA holds AGM

    The Financial Markets Association of Nigeria (FMDA) will on Monday September 30, hold its Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Lagos.

    In a statement, FMDA said the AGM will be an opportunity to inaugurate its newly elected President, Mrs. Adetoun Dosunmu who was formerly the association’s Vice President. She succeeds Samuel Ocheho, whose tenure has ended.

    The group also announced Ayokunle Ojo as the new Vice President while Ayodeji Abimbola, Dare Otitotju and Chuksnwabuisi Promise were  named executive members.

    It said the new officers of the association will be sworn in at the  FMDA Conference Hall, Moneymart Centre,  Tiamiyu Savage Street, Victoria Island, Lagos at an event to be attended by market leaders and key players in the financial sector.

  • Why Nigeria is facing severe climate problems – Buhari

    President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday in New York gave some insights into the severe climate challenges confronting the country.

    He spoke at a meeting with the Nigerian Youths Climate Group shortly before his departure for Abuja at the conclusion of his engagements on the sidelines of the 74th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA74).

    According to a statement by the Special Adviser on Media and publicity, Chief Femi Adesina, the President said: “Nigeria is a neighbour to the Sahara Desert; Lake Chad is shrinking while population is exploding. It’s a challenging situation. With less land, less rainfall, these are very unique problems for the country.”

    He lauded the youths for representing Nigeria at UNGA as Climate Change Champions.

    Buhari said “It is good you are participating so that you can appreciate the problems older people are having.”

    According to Esther Agbarakwe, one of the leaders of the youth group, “This is the first time we are seeing a President sit with us. It gives us hope. We young people understand the problems, and are in the vanguard of advocacy. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Climate Change Department works with us for solutions.”

    She also commended the support the group is receiving from the UN Deputy Secretary-General, Amina Mohammed and the Ministry of Environment, stressing, “We are in it together.”

    On his part, Hamzat Lawal, also one of the leaders of the group, thanked President Buhari for signing the Not Too Young to Run Bill into law.

    According to him, “We seek solutions to problems in the Sahel region. If we provide solutions to the Sahel, the world will be at peace. You have announced planting of 25 million tress and we youths plan to match it.”

  • “Love is War” hits Cinemas

    “Love is war”, an intriguing movie about a couple, who ran against each other in a political race, hit the cinemas on Friday.

    The long anticipated must-watch movie is a collaboration of Inkblot productions and Dioni Visions Entertainment, starring Omoni Oboli, Richard Mofe-Damijo, among others.

    It tells a story about a couple who ran against each other for the governorship election in the same state. It is love at home and war at work, leaving their daughter, Ndana, in conflict.

    They both win their parties primary elections and must go head-to-head in the secondary election.

  • No plans to dethrone Emir Sanusi – Ganduje

    Kano State government, on Friday, denied allegations that Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, is planning to dethrone the Emir of Kano, Malam Muhammad Sanusi II.

    Earlier, a Kano group, Renaissance Coalition, in a press statement signed by its spokesman, Ibrahim A. Waiya, which was made available to the Nation, alleged that plans were under way by the Kano State Government to transfer the Emir of Kano, Malam Muhammad Sanusi II to Bichi Emirate.

    According to the statement, if the monarch resists the move, he would be dethroned.

    However, the statement cautioned Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje against, the plot, which is capable of destabilizing the peace and stability being enjoyed in the State.

    The group, in the statement, threatened that if the Governor goes ahead, with its plan, it would have no option than to compel the Federal Government to declare a state of Emergency in Kano.

    When contacted, Ganduje’s Chief Press Secretary, Abba Auwal, dismissed as false, allegations that the State Government is planning to depose the Emir, insisting that there is no such plans.

  • JUST IN: INEC disqualifies 14 political parties for Kogi, Bayelsa gov polls

    The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has disqualified 14 political parties from participating in the upcoming elections in Kogi and Bayelsa states for fielding invalid candidates.

    Disclosing this in a statement in Abuja on Friday, INEC National Commissioner and the Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mr Festus Okoye, said the commission disqualified eight parties in Kogi state and six in Bayelsa state.

    According to the commission, 49 of the political parties in Kogi state had submitted names and personal particulars of their nominated governorship and deputy governorship candidates for the November 16 governorship election.

    It explained further that only 23 political parties will be allowed to participate in the election, owing to the fact that eight of the parties violated the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended) by nominating under-aged candidates. He also said that 18 other political parties voluntarily withdrew from participating in the election.

    However, 46 out of the 52 political parties that submitted names and credentials of their candidates for the election in Bayelsa state will be participating in the election.

    According to commission, six of the parties were also disqualified for also violating the rules of the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended) by nominating under-aged candidates.

    “At the close of the time stipulated by sections 31, 33 and 35 of Electoral Act, 2010 (as amended) for the submission of the names of nominated candidates, 49 nominations were received for Kogi State.

    “Out of these, 41 nominations were valid while 8 were invalid. Subsequently, 18 political parties withdrew from contesting the elections. Therefore, 23 political parties will contest the Governorship election in Kogi State.

    “For Bayelsa State, a total of 52 nominations were received. Out of these, 46 were valid, while 6 were invalid. One political party has since withdrawn from the contest, leaving a total of 45 political parties to contest the Governorship election in Bayelsa State.

    “In compliance with section 34 of the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended), the full names and addresses of all candidates standing nominated will be published in the relevant offices and on the website of the Commission on Monday, September 30, 2019,” the statement said.

  • Husband sets wife ablaze in Ondo over land proceeds

    A man identified as Ojo Daniyan has been arrested by police detectives for allegedly setting his wife, Dorcas, ablaze at Irese Road, Akure, Ondo State.

    Ojo committed the offence last Saturday at about 11pm while his wife was asleep.

    Before the incident happened, the victim and her husband had had a disagreement over the proceeds of a land she had sold.

    Ojo not satisfied with the explanation given by his wife carried out the dastardly act.

    It was learnt that few hours before the incident, Ojo brought home a keg of petrol; and some hours later, a fire started while he was in the room with the deceased.

    The source said, “When the fire started, it was one of the neighbours that saw the smoke coming out from the room.

    “We rescued the woman and rushed her to the Federal Medical Centre, Owo , where she died,”

    Spokesman of the Ondo state police command, Femi Joseph, a Superintendent of Police (SP)said the suspect was in Police custody and that the Command had commenced investigation into the matter.

    Joseph added that “We have arrested the husband of the deceased, he is undergoing interrogation, but he is still denying his involvement in the crime, but circumstantial evidence is showing that he knows one or two things about the incident”.

  • Obaseki showcases Edo’s investment opportunities at US-Nigeria trade council

    The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has assured American businesses of vast investment opportunities in Edo State owing to the opening up of the state’s economy by reforms in the industrial sector, infrastructure, healthcare, innovation and education.

    The governor said this during an address at a session of the United States-Nigeria Council on Food Security, Trade and Investment, holding in the United States of America, on the sidelines of the 74th United Nations General Assembly.

    Governor Obaseki’s administration has recorded successes in opening up the state for industrialisation through investment in production centres, electricity generation and distribution, infrastructural development and healthcare, among others.

    Some of the big-ticket projects in the state include the Benin Enterprise and Industrial Park, the Benin River Port, Edo Innovation Hub and Production Hubs, among others, in the state’s three Senatorial Districts.

    The governor revealed that a number of initiatives have started yielding results in the state, such as the Edo Production Center, where light manufacturers in the state are provided with 24 hours electricity and other business support service to increase productivity, as well as the Edo Innovation Hub, which houses the likes of Microsoft, Facebook, Uber and other tech companies, operating in the state.

    He added that the state government has opened up the business space which has resulted in investment by the private sector players in oil palm plantations, transportation, processing industries, energy, and healthcare, among others.

    Obaseki also said the state would be investing proceeds from the divestment of 50 per cent of its equity in the Edo Azura Power project into the Edo Enterprise and Industrial Park project, to kick start the landmark project, which is set to transform the economic fortunes of the state.

    Nigerian dignitaries at the event include the Group Chief Executive of Oando Plc, Wale Tinubu, and Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, among others.

     

  • Couple, others arrested for selling stolen siblings for N900,000

    The Police in Imo State have arrested a couple and four others for stealing and selling two siblings for N900,000.

    Commissioner of Police Rabiu Ladodo said one of the stolen children, Promise Opunwa,2, has been recovered.

    He however said his elder sister, Olunma,4, was still missing.
    Parading the suspects before newsmen, Ladodo who gave the names of the couple as Chika Obi,28 and Chiamaka, described the deal as absurd, saying that the infant was recovered at Uli in Anambra State.

    He said other members of the syndicate include Ogidi Chukwuma,26, Anuforo Ogechi,28,Ebere Okafor,45, and Chioma Ngobiri, 46.

    “On August 4, three members of the syndicate invaded the house of one Ijeoma Opunwa and inflicted machete cut on one Daberechi Okafor who was present at the time of the invasion.

    “They instilled fear on other occupants and made away with two children, Oluma ,4, and Promise, 2, to an unknown destination. They robbed them their phone and undisclosed amount of money.”

    On receipt of the information, the CP said that the operatives of the anti-kidnapping unit stormed the hoodlums’ hideout at Umulololo Okigwe LGA where Ogechi Anuruo, Chika Obi, and Chiamaka Nwadinobi were apprehended.

    According to him: “The suspects confessed to the crime and even led operatives to Onitsha through Uli in Anambra State where their gang members one Ebere Okafor and Chioma Ngobiri were arrested and one of the stolen children, Promise ,2, was recovered.”

    Ladodo assured that efforts were on top gear to rescuing the remaining missing child.

    One of the suspects, Ogidi, he said admitted that he got N130, 000 from the shady transaction.
