NAPTIP gets kudos for rescue operation

The Employers Association for Private Employment Agencies of Nigeria (EAPEAN) has praised the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) on its successful rescue of seven suspected victims of human trafficking in Abuja.

President of EAPEAN Femi Ogunlowo noted that the operation ‘highlights the dangers of patronising unlicensed recruiters who flout the rules and regulations governing recruitment’. He urged job seekers to be vigilant and report suspicious activities to NAPTIP or other relevant authorities.

He said: “EAPEAN commends NAPTIP, under the able leadership of Binta Adamu-Bello, for its tireless efforts in combating human trafficking. Its dedication to protecting vulnerable individuals from exploitation is truly commendable.

“The recent operation highlights the dangers of patronizing unlicensed recruiters who disregard the rules and regulations governing recruitment. These unscrupulous individuals prey on vulnerable job seekers, putting their lives at risk. It is therefore essential that job seekers exercise caution when dealing with recruitment agencies and report any suspicious activities to the relevant authorities.

“EAPEAN however calls on NAPTIP to focus on major international airports, such as the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, and Aminu Kano International Airport, which are being exploited by unscrupulous operators in the industry.

“To protect Nigerians from falling victim to human trafficking, EAPEAN advises individuals seeking international employment opportunities to work only with licensed international recruiters. It is crucial that intending migrants ask questions about the company deploying them to work abroad.

“As the umbrella organization for licensed Private Employment Agencies (PEAs) in Nigeria, EAPEAN promotes International Labour Organisation (ILO) standards and ethical practices in the recruitment, deployment, and management of outsourced personnel.

“In partnership with international organizations like the ILO and IOM, EAPEAN works to standardise the PEA industry and ensure best practices. EAPEAN remains committed to protecting the rights and interests of Nigerian workers.

“Together, we can make a difference and create a safer and more just society for all.”

The women were rescued during a raid of the factory at an estate in the Ushafa area of Abuja on Monday, NAPTIP said in a statement yesterday.

According to  the agency’s Press Officer, Vincent Adekoye, the victims were locked up in a rented apartment in the estate by a yet-to-be identified suspected human trafficking agent.

Adekoye alleged that the agent recruited the women through an online platform, adding that the place was raided after NAPTIP received a tip-off by a concerned resident who noticed an unusual movement and situation around the area.

    NAPTIP, Adekoye said.

According to Adekoye, the bishop identified as Kenneth Duke, 52, founder of a prominent church at Dantata Zuba Expressway, raped the victim, aged 12, on March 6, a day after she arrived his residence so that his wife could enrol her for a skills acquisition programme.
