AAUA: NANS demands transparent probe into death of murder suspect in police custody

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called for a thorough and transparent investigation into the death of a prime suspect in the murder case of a student from Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), who reportedly died in police custody.

In a statement issued by the Chairman of NANS Joint Campus Council (JCC), Ondo State, Comrade Adekanye Adeboye, the student body expressed concern over the suspect’s sudden and suspicious death, noting that the incident has raised more questions than answers.

Adeboye clarified that the association’s demand was not to cast blame but to ensure justice and accountability, as part of its duty to protect the rights and interests of Nigerian students.

“Every life matters,” he said, urging the Ondo State Police Command to carry out a professional and transparent investigation to uncover the exact circumstances surrounding the suspect’s death.

NANS reaffirmed its commitment to standing for truth and justice and called on all relevant authorities to prioritise transparency in handling the matter.

He said, “We ask this not out of distrust but out of a strong desire to ensure that due process is followed and that justice, true and unquestionable, is delivered not just to the deceased AAUA students, but also to the public that seeks closure.

“This is not a call to apportion blame or cast doubt on the competence of the police. Rather, it is a respectful appeal for openness in handling this critical development. Justice, as we all know, must not only be done but must also be seen to be done.

“We equally appeal to His Excellency, the Governor of Ondo State, Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, to continue to lend his voice and influence toward ensuring that every necessary support is given to the Police and other relevant agencies involved in the investigation.

“As a student community, we remain calm, law-abiding, and focused on justice. We implore all stakeholders, from security operatives to government officials, to join us in ensuring that the lives of our students are not lost in vain.

“We owe it to the memory of our fallen comrades. We owe it to the families grieving them. We owe it to the students of Ondo State. Justice must be served fairly, transparently, and completely.

“It is with a heavy heart and deep concern that I address you today. The tragic loss of our students from Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), remains a painful wound that is yet to heal.

“Their untimely demise shook our student body to its core, and we continue to mourn their absence while seeking justice on their behalf.

“We acknowledge and sincerely appreciate the swift response and ongoing efforts of the Nigerian Police Force in investigating the case and bringing suspects to justice.

“The arrests made were a significant step in the right direction, and we commend the commitment of the Force in the face of a very sensitive matter.”

Nigerian students hail Tinubu, NNPCL over refinery operationalisation

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) for their visionary efforts in ensuring the operationalization of a new refinery in Nigeria.

In a statement during the plenary session of the 86th Senate sitting of NANS held at Lagos State University, NANS Senate President, Akinteye Babatunde, praised the development as a significant step toward repositioning Nigeria’s energy sector for sustainable growth and self-reliance.

Babatunde emphasized that the readiness of the new refinery signals a pivotal moment in addressing Nigeria’s long-standing petroleum refining challenges.

He noted that the refinery’s operations would greatly reduce reliance on imported petroleum products, ensure fuel availability at affordable rates, and stimulate job creation, thereby promoting national economic stability.

NANS lauded the initiative as a bold move that underscores the government’s commitment to fostering energy independence and revitalizing the nation’s economy.

He said: “This achievement highlights the focused leadership and pragmatic policies of President Tinubu, whose administration continues to demonstrate resolve in tackling pressing national challenges.

“It also underscores the competence and dedication of the NNPCL management team in executing critical infrastructural projects that directly benefit Nigerians.

“In alignment with our role as the voice of Nigerian students and an advocate for national progress, the NANS leadership will undertake an on-site visit to the refinery. This visit is aimed at gaining firsthand insights into the facility’s operations, assessing its impact on national development, and exploring opportunities for collaboration to empower Nigerian youths through potential skill acquisition and employment initiatives within the energy sector.

“Furthermore, we urge Nigerians across all sectors to extend their support to the NNPCL and the federal government. The rehabilitation of this refinery is a step in the right direction, but the full realization of its potential, alongside the revival of other dormant refineries, requires collective national commitment. Together, we can chart a path towards energy independence, economic sustainability, and shared prosperity.

“NANS remains steadfast in its commitment to advocating for policies and projects that enhance the well-being of Nigerian students and contribute to the growth and development of our great nation. We commend President Tinubu and the NNPCL team once again for this groundbreaking achievement and reaffirm our readiness to partner in building a brighter future for Nigeria.”
