    NDDC inaugurates four projects in Rivers

    The Niger Delta Development Commission, (NDDC) has inaugurated four projects in Okirika Local Government Area of Rivers State.

    The projects comprised a police station and a Health Centre; a recreation centre and a 4.5km Egbelebie Road network.

    Speaking at the event, the Chairman of the NDDC Governing Board, Mr. Chiedu Ebie, said that the Okrika projects demonstrated the commission’s mandate to facilitate the sustainable development of the Niger Delta.

    Ebie in a statement signed by the commission’s Director, Corporate Affairs, Seledi Thomson-Wakama, said that the NDDC Board and Management were facilitating the development of the region in collaboration with other stakeholders.

    “NDDC is not a tier of government. Our work is to complement what other tiers of government are doing and to ensure that the administration of President Bola Tinubu succeeds in delivering the Renewed Hope Agenda,” he said.

    In his speech, the NDDC Managing Director, Dr Samuel Ogbuku, said that the series of project inauguration was the dividends of the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Federal Government.

    He noted that the NDDC was spreading the good news of Renewed Hope through tangible results.

    According to the NDDC boss, the project inauguration started last year in Ondo, Edo, Delta, Akwa Ibom, and Bayelsa states, adding: “This year, the exercise continued with notable projects in Delta, Imo, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Cross River and Bayelsa states.”

    Ogbuku said there was a need for peace in communities to pave the way for development, noting that President Tinubu had given the board a marching order to complete all ongoing projects in the Niger Delta region and assured them that Okrika-Borokiri Road and bridges would be completed in good time.

    He acknowledged the support of the Senate and the House of Representatives in enhancing project delivery, noting that the security agencies had been of great help in providing security at the NDDC project sites.

    In his remarks, the NDDC Executive Director of Finance and Administration, Alabo Boma Iyaye, noted that the people of Okrika were full of joy over the projects and reassured them that the present board of the Commission would complete the Borokiri-Okrika bridge, linking the community to Port Harcourt.

    In his project brief, the NDDC Executive Director of Projects, Sir Victor Antai, explained that the network of roads was approximately four and a half kilometres long, while the Police Station was equipped with an armoury, male and female cells and other facilities built to strengthen security.

    Antai noted that the projects were undertaken to enhance community development and improve the well-being of residents in the communities.

    A representative of the Abam community, Chief Believe Abam, expressed gratitude to the NDDC for delivering the various projects for the people. He commended the vision and leadership prowess of the NDDC Board and Management and appealed for more development projects in the area.

    NDDC to host maiden Niger Delta Sports Festival

    The Niger Delta Development Commission, (NDDC), is set to  organize a maiden Niger Delta Sports Festival as part of its agenda for sports and human capital development in the region.

    A statement signed by the commission’s Director, Corporate Affairs, Seledi Thomson-Wakama said the multi-sports festival, would take place at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, to kick off the activities marking the 25th anniversary of the NDDC.

    The event is expected  to hold  between April 1 and 9 in line with Nigeria’s new vision for sports development and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s mandate to foster talent development and innovation in sports.

    “Through the sports festival, we will bring together thousands of young athletes from the nine states of the Niger Delta region and allow them to showcase their talents,” the statement stated.

    “We are organising Olympic-style games featuring over ten sports for the nine NDDC mandate states. We understand the power of sports in transforming society, and as a key stakeholder in the Nigeria project, we want to contribute our quota to sports development in the country.

    “We have also recognised and understood Mr. President’s zeal and passion for the sector’s revival. As an intervention agency, we must partner with the region’s state governments to develop sports”.

    In initiating the Niger Delta Sports Festival, the commission said its  objective was to support the states in the discovery of sports talents, grooming them into national and international elite athletes, nurturing them to attain gainful professional careers in sports, for self-reliance and economic independence.

    The statement added: “The sports festival also aims to strengthen penetration and access to sports at the grassroots, reinvigorate and sustain the region’s competitiveness, supremacy, and influence in Nigerian sports, and use sports to enhance more significant interaction, unity, friendship, and security across the region.”

    “We have adequately prepared for this sporting event with our Project Consultant, Dunamis Icon Limited, and we are pleased to announce to the public that we are about to birth the Niger Delta Sports Festival.

    “In the coming weeks, there shall be a flurry of activities to herald the sports festival, intended as a celebration of the sporting prowess of the Niger Delta, which has produced and will, by our partnership with our people, continue to be the pathfinder and hub of Nigerian sports”.

    Tinubu directs NDDC to fix Warri-Benin sections of East West road 

    The Niger Delta Development Commission, (NDDC) has commenced emergency repairs of the failed sections of the East West-Road between Warri in Delta State and Benin in Edo State, especially the dilapidated sections along Ibadulume, Amukpe roundabout, Mosoga and Ologbo.

    The NDDC Managing Director, Dr Samuel Ogbuku, said the commission was obeying the directive of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who instructed the commission to fix the road.

    Ogbuku spoke while inspecting the ongoing repairs at the failed sections of the road in the company of the Executive Director, Projects, Sir Victor Antai and other directors of the commission.

    Ogbuku in a statement signed by the NDDC Director, Corporate Affairs, Seledi Thomson-Wakama, expressed gratitude to Tinubu for giving the directive for the urgent restoration of the failed sections of the strategic road traversing the Niger Delta region.

    The NDDC boss said: “Following a presidential directive to urgently intervene to restore the dilapidated sections of the East-West Road, the NDDC has quickly mobilised a civil engineering firm to carry out remedial works to ensure that the people do not suffer unnecessary pains and gridlock while construction work by the main contractor is going on.”

    The NDDC Managing Director commended the Federal Government for promptly acting on media reports and outcries of the people to re-award the contract for the road project which had long been abandoned. 

    He expressed confidence that when completed, the road project, being supervised by the Federal Ministry of Works, would stand the test of time.

    Ogboku enjoined members of the various communities and commuters to show understanding during the period of construction, as the government was prepared to complete the project as quickly as possible.

    He said: “Before we came for this inspection, we have mobilised our contractors and also brought in the necessary equipment for the work. I want members of the communities to be patient and give maximum cooperation to the contractors as they undertake the assignment. I am assuring everyone that the bad sections will be fixed in a very short time. The contractor has promised to complete the job in two weeks.”

    Briefing the NDDC inspection team, the Managing Director of the construction firm handling the project, Mr. Adara Opeoluwa, said the three-kilometer portions to be repaired included those in Ibadulume, Amukpe round-about, Mosoga and Ologbo.
