  • Man arraigned for stabbing minor

    Emmanuel Anya, 33, who allegedly stabbed an eight-year-old girl on the forehead with a spoon was on Monday arraigned before an Ota Magistrates’ Court in Ogun.

    Anya, who lives at No. 32 Olufunmilayo Street, Joju Road, Ota, is facing a charge of assaulting a minor.

    The Prosecutor, Sgt. Chudu Gbesi, told the court that the accused allegedly committed the offence at about 2.00 p.m. on March 14 at his residence.

    Gbesi said that the accused allegedly assaulted the eight-year-old girl by using spoon on her forehead, which gave her bruises.

    He said that it was the noise of the girl that alerted neighbours who reported the matter to the police.

    Gbesi said that the offence contravened Section 355 of the Criminal Code Vol. 11, Law of Ogun, 2006.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    The Senior Magistrate, Mr S.O. Banwo, granted the accused N50,000 bail with two sureties in like sum.

    The case was adjourned until April 6 for hearing.

  • Pastor arraigned for allegedly stealing N350,000

    A pastor, Ajayi Pius, 45, was on Monday arraigned before Magistrate Omolola Akosile of  an Ado-Ekiti Magistrates’ Court, Ekiti, for  allegedly stealing N350,000.

    The accused is facing a charge of stealing.

    The prosecutor, Sgt. Monica Ikebuilo, told the court that the accused committed the offence sometimes in June 2013 at Falana area of Ado-Ekiti.

    “The accused who is a pastor in an indigenous church (names withheld) situated at Basiri, in Ado-Ekiti, was alleged to have stolen N350, 000 kept in his car.

    “The amount was to be used by one Rufai Mercy to rent an apartment.’’

    The prosecutor said that the offence contravened Section 383 and was punishable under Section 390 (8b) of the Criminal Code Cap C16 Vol. 1 Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.

    The prosecutor, however, applied for adjournment to enable her study the case file ‎and assembly witnesses.

    The accused pleaded not guilty.

    His counsel, Mr Simeon Ojo, applied for his bail on liberal terms and promised that the accused would not jump bail.

    The magistrate, Mrs Omolola Akosile, granted the defendant N 50,000 bail with two sureties in like sum.

    She said that the sureties must be resident within the jurisdiction and must have verifiable addresses.

    The magistrate adjourned the case till April 27 for hearing.

  • Man in court over stealing of car worth N2.5m

    A 27-year-old man, Mohammed Bello, was on Wednesday arraigned in a Gudu Upper Area Court, Abuja, for allegedly stealing a car worth N2.5million.

    Bello, a civil servant, is facing trial on a two-count charge of criminal conspiracy and theft.

    He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    The judge, Mr Umar Kagarko, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N2.5 million and one surety in like sum and adjourned the matter till May 9 for hearing.

    The prosecutor, Mr John Ijagbemi, had told the court that one Ogunsode Gbade reported the matter at Wuse Police Station on Jan.13.

    He said that the complainant alleged that he parked his RAV 4 SUV jeep with reg. No. ABJ 268 AG, valued at N2.5 million, at Orange Garden, Wuse Zone 3, Abuja.

    “When he was about to leave, he discovered that his vehicle had been stolen,’’ Ijagbemi said.

    The prosecutor said that the vehicle contained one ipad phone, valued at N180, 000; one hair drier, valued at N35,000, and one HP laptop, valued at N130, 000.

    According to John, during police investigations, it was discovered that the defendant had criminally conspired with one Awalu, now at large, to steal the said vehicle.

    He said that the ipad was recovered from the defendant, while investigation is ongoing to recover the stolen vehicle and other items from where he sold them.

    He said the offence was contrary to Sections 97 and 287 of the Penal Code.

     

  • Man in court over alleged theft of items worth N401,000

    A 24-year-old man, Kayode Olanrewaju, was on Wednesday arraigned in an Akure Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing items worth N401,000.

    The prosecutor, Sgt. Suleiman Adebayo, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on Jan. 27, between 1 a.m. and 4 a.m. at Ologede Street,Akure.

    “The accused broke ‎into the house of one Mrs Akinlalu Femifola and stole electric appliances worth N215,000; one Techno handset worth N22,000; 12 pieces of plates worth N15,000.

    “Other items stolen include baby wears worth N100,000; a wall hanger worth N5,000; vegetable oil worth N4,000 and N40,000 cash,’’ he said.

    The prosecutor said that the offences were contrary to and punishable under Sections 411, 412, 362 and 390(9) of the Criminal Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.

    The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges levelled against him.

    Counsel to the accused, Yemi Salau, asked for bail of his client in liberal terms and assured of credible sureties.

    The Magistrate, Mr Oluseyi Akintoroye, granted bail to the accused in the sum of N80,000 and one surety in like sum.

    He adjourned the case till March 16 for hearing.

    Teacher arraigned over alleged oral sex with student

    The Police on Tuesday arraigned a 21-year-old teacher, Matthew Sodake, at an Ota Magistrates’ Court for allegedly having oral sex with a 14-year old student.

    The accused, whose address is unknown, is facing alleged charge of assault.

    The prosecutor, Sgt. Chudu Gbesi, told the court that the accused committed the offence on July 12 at about 8.00 p.m. at Ambassador Star Comprehensive Secondary School, Answer, Ota in Ogun.

    Gbesi told the court that the accused, a teacher in the school, lured the 14-year-old student (name withheld) into the one of the classrooms and had oral sex with him.

    He said that the offence contravened Section 216 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun,2006.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    The Senior Magistrate, Mr S.O Banwo granted the accused bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.

    Banwo said that the sureties must be residents within the court’s jurisdiction and should be gainfully employed.

    He also ordered the sureties to swear to an affidavit of means and show evidence of tax payment to Ogun Government .

    The magistrate adjourned the case to Aug. 12, for hearing.

    Man beat up policeman for preventing him from killing his fiancée

    A 26-year-old trader, Uchenna Okeke, on Tuesday appeared in an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly beating up a policeman.

    Okeke, a resident of Oluwalimu Street, Ikeja, Lagos, is being tried for breach of peace and assault.

    The Prosecutor, Insp. George Nwosu, told the court that the accused committed the offences on June 11 at Ikeja, Lagos.

    He said the accused unlawfully assaulted a policeman in uniform attached to MAN Centre Police station for preventing Okeke from killing his lover.

    “The accused beat up the complainant and also caused injury to his head,’’ he said.

    Nwosu said that the complainant while performing his official duty sighted the accused beating up a woman and dragging her on the ground.

    “The police corporal saw the accused beating his girlfriend and dragging her on the ground, he rushed to the scene to prevent the accused from committing murder.

    “When he wanted to stop the accused from beating his lover, the accused transferred his aggression to him for preventing him from dealing with his fiancée.

    “He beat him up and hit him with a stone on his head which resulted to bleeding,’’ he said.

    The offences, said Nwosu, contravened Sections 166 and 171 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011, which on conviction attracts three-year imprisonment.

    The accused pleaded innocence of the offences and was granted bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.

    The Magistrate, Mr A.A Adesanya, adjourned the case till July 6 for mention.

    Police arraign two for stealing $14m from church

    The Police in Ogun on Monday arraigned two men, Akapo Paul,73, and Johnson Shorinnolu,63, for allegedly stealing $14 million belonging to the West African Christian Mission.

    They appeared before an Ota Magistrates’ Court

    The accused, whose addresses are unknown, are facing two-count charge of stealing and conspiracy.

    The Prosecutor, Abdulkareem Mustapha, told the court that the accused committed the offences sometime in 2015 at about 9:30 pm at West African Christian Mission at No.49 Tarmac Road, Ota.

    Mustapha alleged that the accused conspired, as signatories to the bank account of West African Christian mission, to steal 14 million dollars.

    He said that the offences contravened Sections 390 (8) (b) and 516 of the Criminal Code Vol.1, Laws of Ogun, 2006.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

     

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs A.I. Adelaja, admitted them to bail in the sum of N2 million each with two sureties in like sum.

     

    She said the sureties must be residents within the court’s jurisdiction and should be gainfully employed.

     

    Adelaja also directed the sureties to swear to an affidavit of means and show evidence of tax payments to Ogun Government.

     

    The magistrate adjourned the case till May 20 for hearing.

  • Two plumbers in jail for impersonation

    A Gudu Upper Area Court in the Federal Capital Territory on Thursday sentenced two plumbers, Mohammed Awalu and Mohammed Dauda, to four weeks imprisonment for impersonating soldiers.

    Awalu, 23, and Dauda, 29, pleaded guilty to the two-count charge of criminal conspiracy and impersonating a public servant contrary to section 97 and 132 of the penal code.

    The presiding judge, Alhaji Umar Kagarko, who convicted them, however, gave them an option of fine of N40, 000 each.

    The Prosecutor, Oyeyemi Adeniyi, had told the court that men of the Nigerian Army Guard Brigade reported the matter at the police station on March 9, 2016.

    Adeniyi said that the convicts were arrested by Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) operatives and handed over to military authorities when it was discovered that they were not soldiers.

    He told the court that both men were dressed in military regalia with the intension to release one of their friends detained by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
