Don’t hijack party, SDP warns defectors

The leadership of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Southwest at the weekend made clarification on the new membership of the former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory ( FCT) , Mallam Nasir El-Rufai and others who recently joined the party.

According to the party,  new members are expected to play the game by the rules , and not to hijack the party from those who are there before them.

Speaking at a meeting of the party during an Iftar organized by the Oyo State chapter of the party for stakeholders in the 11 local governments in Ibadanland, the leader of SDP in the South West,  Hon. Mulikat Adeola Akande declared that the party will take careful measure to ensure that only candidates that are tested and trusted are presented in the 2027 general elections.

On the defection of former governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai to the SDP, Hon Mulikat Akande said “politics is a game of numbers and anybody who wants to come into SDP is welcome as long as they are ready to play by the rules of the party and not with the mind of taking the party from those who are there before.”

El-Rufai not our member, says Kaduna SDP

The Kaduna State Chapter of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has disowned former governor Nasir El-Rufai, stating that he is not a recognised member of the party in the state.

The former Kaduna State governor and founding member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nasir El-Rufai, had dumped the ruling party for the Social Democratic Party.

The former governor cited a growing misalignment between his personal values and the current direction of the APC as the primary reason for his decision.

El-Rufai had  disclosed this in a post on his X handle recently, where he expressed his disappointment with the APC’s leadership, accusing the party of straying from the progressive ideals of its founding members.

“As a founding member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), I have fond memories of working with other compatriots to negotiate the merger of political parties that created the APC. Since 2013, I have hoped that my personal values and those of the APC will continue to align until I choose to retire from politics.”

However, at a press conference held in Kaduna yesterday, the SDP’s Assistant National Secretary, Northwest Zone, Idris Inuwa, emphasised that El-Rufai’s entry into the party remained a rumor as he was yet to follow due process.

“It has come to our notice that certain individuals, including Mal. Nasir El-Rufai, are being rumored to have joined the SDP. However, neither the Chairman of the Kaduna North Local Government Chapter in Kaduna State, nor the leadership of Unguwar Sarki ward, has any record of these memberships,” Inuwa said.

Inuwa, therefore, advised El-Rufai and his cohorts to follow proper procedures if they wish to officially become members of the party.

“We advise him and any other interested individuals to follow the proper procedures if they wish to officially become members of the party,” he said.

Inuwa also rejected the purported dissolution of the Kaduna State Working Committee of the SDP, stating that it is unconstitutional and an affront to the principles of due process and internal democracy.

“The Kaduna State Executive Committee of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) categorically rejects the purported dissolution of the State Working Committee as contained in a letter from the National Secretariat dated 25 February, 2025,” Inuwa said.

Inuwa emphasised that the Kaduna State Executive Committee is a product of a duly conducted State Congress and holds a four-year mandate that remains valid and binding.

  • Tinubu not bankrolling us – SDP

Tinubu not bankrolling us – SDP

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) on Wednesday dismissed claims it is owned or bankrolled by President Bola Tinubu.

SDP maintained that it remains an independent entity owned by Nigerians.

The opposition party accused certain individuals of pushing the false narrative for personal and political

    reasons.

In a statement by its National Publicity Secretariat, Rufus Ayenigba, the party dismissed the allegations as reckless and mischievous propaganda aimed at misleading the public.

It clarified that there is no individual who owns the SDP, adding that there is no godfather anywhere to whom the party reports, declaring further that “Nigerians own the party.”

The SDP said: “The national leadership of our great party, the Social Democratic Party, SDP, has in the past days been inundated with calls and expressions of concern about the reckless and mischievous statements credited to some individuals, suggesting that President Bola Tinubu owns and funds the Social Democratic Party, the SDP.

“Initially, we chose not to dignify the preposterous claims of those political jobbers, attention- and patronage-seeking with any response so as not to make their false claim have any semblance of importance but upon deep reflection and considering the preponderance of calls from well-meaning patriots.

“We have decided to respond as follows: that the SDP is a national political party that runs on the provisions of its constitution and operates its people-centred ideology.

“There is no individual who owns the SDP, and there is no godfather anywhere to whom the party reports; Nigerians own the party.

“That beyond the undeniable fact that the SDP provided the foundation upon which the glorious political career of President Tinubu is built, having provided him the platform to contest and win the Senate seat of Lagos-West along with Senator Kofoworola Akerele-Buknor and Senator Anthony Adefuye in the aborted 3rd Republic.

“That there is no working connection or relationship whatsoever with the president or his agents with  regard to political collaboration.

“That the party has, over the years, been solely self-funded and sustained through the subscriptions and sacrifices of members across the country.”

  • ‘Inordinate ambition’ fuelled El-Rufai’s defection to SDP — Presidency

‘Inordinate ambition’ fuelled El-Rufai’s defection to SDP — Presidency

The Presidency has downplayed the defection of former Kaduna Governor Mallam Nasir El-Rufai from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Social Democratic Party (SDP), suggesting that his move is driven by personal ambition rather than political ideology.

Reacting to the reports on Monday, Special Adviser to the President on Policy Communications, Daniel Bwala, stated that while El-Rufai has the constitutional right to switch parties, his motives will be scrutinised.

Bwala on his verified X handle @DanielBwala, on Monday, argued that El-Rufai’s political relevance was not as sudden or significant as some might suggest and indicated that the coming days would see further examination of his decision.

Bwala criticised the former governor’s association with opposition forces, asserting that working with those seeking to unseat the incumbent government does not constitute a political ideology or progressivism.

Instead, he described the move as a reflection of personal ambition, which he predicted would ultimately fail.

El-Rufai confirmed his deflection to the SDP on Monday, stating it was the best decision to take.

But Bwala said: “Senior, @elrufai . I read the news today that you resigned from APC to join SDP. Well I have nothing against you because you exercised your constitutional right.

“However, the motive is what we would interrogate in the coming days and remind Nigerians that you are not a phenomenal that emerge like a clap of thunder out of a blue sky.

“We would intellectually remind you that associating with sore losers to unseat the incumbent is not an ideology, neither is it progressivism; It is simply an inordinate ambition, that is destined to fail.”
